Starting from the hitherto research by other scholars, the author of the present essaycame to question a number of opinions about the Jian Kiln. After the three visits he paid tothe site of the Jian Kiln, he reaches the following conclusions. Firstly, the name 'jian kiln' refered to in old literature means two different things; oneis the kiln located in modern Shuiji township , Jianyang municipality, Fujian, and the other, the kiln at modern Dehua, Fujian. The products of the two kilns have often been confused, due to the limitation of the 'desk archaeology.' According to the author, the word 'jian kiln'should refers exclusively to the former. And he agrees with the opinion that the kiln wasnamed after 'Jian'an,' 'Jianzhou' or 'Jianning' in the Tang-Song period. Secondly, the author selects for discussion the zhegu(patridge)out of the three types ofjian zhan(tea cups)as related with the tea-enjoying etiquette of the Song dynasty. He is infull accord with the assumption that the zhegu cup mentioned in the Song dynasty litera-ture is no other than what we call 'oil-dip-glazed' cup today. At the site of the Jian Kiln, hefound a really exquisite 'oil-dip-glazed' potsherd, which resembles completely the zhegu cupof the Jian Kiln in the Osaka Municipal Ceramic Museum collection, a national treasure ofJapan. This undermines the assumption that zhegu cup was a product of the Jizhou Kiln ofthe Song dynasty. The scarcity both of the zhegu potshers at the site of the Jian Kiln andof those handed down through generations, has combined with the difficulty in the imitativeproduction of the cup in recent years in suggesting that the zhegu type glaze color wasnothing intended but something that came by sheer chance. Thirdly, at the site of the Jian Kiln, the author found inverse characters 供御 and 进盏on some supporters. He quesses that when cups were placed in the furnace, the characterson their bottom were printed inversely on these scarcely dried supporters.
