From the spring to fall of 1997, local archaeologists carried out a careful reconnaissancealong the north bank of the Huanghe River down the Sanmenxia Gorge, in coordinationwith the construction of the Xiaolangdi project. Remains of ancient cliff roadway werefound at forty places on the cliff overlooking the torrents of the river, totaling up to fivethousand meters, during their 50-km tour through three counties, i. e., Pinglu, Xiaxian andYuanqu. The holes carved for poles and planks and other remains were seen here andthere. The inscriptions of the Jianwu reign period of the Eastern Han dynasty provides areliable clue to the date of the roadway. We know from all this that the Huanghe roadway made its debut in the Western Han,became popular in the Eastern Han, reached its acme in the Tang dynasty and went down-hill afterward. The fundamental reason for its construction shared by different periods liesin its relation with the transportation by the Huanghe River, whose large volume, small costand short time established it as the major vehicle for the exchange of grains and othergoods between the eastern and western regions. During the Western and Eastern Han dy-nasties, it assisted in securing a normal life in the capital, in guarding off or cushioning nat-ural catastrophes.
