Rhetorical narratology originates from the first generation of the Chicago School, which set store by textual poetics rather than history, thus forming a challenge, together with its academic rival the New Criticism,to the critical tradition emphasizing historical context and neglecting the text itself.Wayne Booth’s The Rhetoric of Fiction is a representative work of the second generation of the Chicago School, which shifted the focus of attention from the text to the communication between author and reader. The third generation combine rhetorical research with narratological research, resulting in the birth of rhetorical narratology.James Phelan is the leading figure of this school, and Peter J.Rabinowitz has also made important contributions. The fourth generation is now burgeoning. The later three generations of the Chicago School, which function in different cultural and academic contexts, construct and develop rhetorical narratology in different ways and from different angles, all contributing to making it one of the major post-classical narratologies with continuous influence since the 1990s.
