摘要
随着毛皮贸易的繁荣,19世纪初夏威夷的檀香木贸易也发展起来,檀香木成为跨太平洋贸易的又一重要商品。由于夏威夷并不直接参与跨洋贸易,因此主要是由英美等国的商船将檀香木运至广州。随着贸易的发展和太平洋局势的变化,夏威夷国王卡美哈梅哈一世于1817年派出第一艘船只“卡阿胡马努号”前往广州,直接开展檀香木贸易。这次航行是夏威夷王国直接参与世界贸易的一次尝试,也是卡美哈梅哈一世用以加强集权、维持独立的一种策略。不幸的是,这次尝试以失败告终,深刻反映了列强在太平洋地区错综复杂的利益关系,以及19世纪全球政治与经济格局的变化。
Stimulated by the booming fur trade,sandalwood became another important commodity in the trans-Pacific exchange network in the early 19th century.Hawaii was not directly involved,since its sandalwood was transported onboard British and US ships to Canton.However,in 1817,King KamehamehaⅠtried to outfit his own ship,the Kaahumanu,to directly trade with Canton.Unfortunately,the attempt failed.The Kaahumanu was unable to enter the city,and the proceeds from the sale of sandalwood were insufficient to cover the steep cost of repair.Hawai never sent another ship Canton.The voyage was mainly Kamehameha I's attempt to centralize his kingdom and secure its independence amid increased competition and conflict among the Western powers to domiante the Pacific.
