Several bird-shaped ornaments—with round eyes and straight beak, and with or without headdress—were unearthed from the No.2 Sacrificial Pit at Sanxingdui. The present paper proposes that these ornaments should either be imported as final products from the middle Yangtze River valley or locally produced in imitation of those in the middle Yangtze River valley.Given the archaeological discoveries of bird-shaped ornaments,we proposed a dispersal route that starts in the middle Yangtze River valley, moves then westward or northwestward to the Xiajiang and upper Yangtze River valleys, and arrives in the Hanzhong Plain and later the Guanzhong Plain. The ornaments discovered in the middle Yangtze River valley and the Hanzhomng Plain were decorated all over the bronze zun-wine vessel and lei-wine jar.By contrast, those in the Guanzhong Plain were decorated only on parts of the Shang-style bronze jue-cup and jia-wine vessel.Such differences can be explained by the unique geographic locations of the Guanzhong and Hanzhong plains that connects the south and north China. They may also be related to the southward expansion of the Shang culture. We suggest that similar bird-shaped ornaments in the Hanzhong and Guanzhong plains as well as the upper Yangtze River valley were important material manifestations of cross-regional cultural contacts among the ruling elites back in the Shang period.
