After the Crimean War,Russia shifted its diplomatic priority from the West to the East. The crucial military target for Russia’s eastward breakthrough was the island of Tsushima, which had the dual function of an unfrozen port and an ocean passage in East Asia.In March 1861,the Russian cruiser Posadnik invaded the island of Tsushima. At the request of Japan to expel the Russian ship, the British, after two secret talks with Japan, sent troops to the island in August, confronted the Russian military and forced it to withdraw. The Posadnik Incident was a preliminary contest and exercise of international forces in East Asian waters, which pushed Russia and Japan to engage in a new round of border negotiations, and Japan and Britain to form alliance. It promoted the development of two important bilateral relationships between Russia and Japan, and between Japan and the Britain. This laid an important political foundation for the East Asian order in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and intensified competition among major powers in East Asia.
