The earliest ling in China originated in the upper Huaihe River area centered on the Jiahu site, dating back to 4500 BC.The original form of the ling was an I Ba-type bell with perforated body made by imitating the tortoise shell rattle, which is a kind of hanging ring. The earliest known ling is concentrated in the early Yangshao Culture and Dawenkou sites in the Jianghan River Basin, but these sites are not the origin, and the tradition of using ling has not been maintained for a long time. With the help of the regional communication network constructed during the strong period of Peiligang Culture, the ling was widely disseminated in the central site in the late Neolithic period, which not only shows that it has the cultural value of being disseminated, but also shows that common values have been formed in specific cultural areas. The owners of ling need to have a certain social status to be able to contact and own imported goods. They must directly or indirectly participate in material and cultural exchanges or trade between regions in order to obtain"new things"from other places. The ling appeared under the social background of the great development of the rattle and has been in use ever since.
