摘要
翻译修改是翻译研究的一个重要话题,尤其是自我改译。1964年《中国文学》(英文版)刊载了杨宪益和戴乃迭合译《红楼梦》的九个章回,目前已属稀缺资料。本文通过对比分析杨译《红楼梦》的期刊版和全译版,从前言内容、书名翻译、回目翻译以及具体内容(包括措辞、句子、诗歌等)的翻译探讨其前后的改译过程,发现其改译的动因包括底本的选择,外部环境的影响以及译者自发性的修改,其中自发性修改的数量最多。杨氏夫妇的自发性修改是翻译家精神的重要体现,对当下译者不无启示。
Translation revision,especially self-translation-revision,is an important topic in translation studies.This paper comparatively analyses the nine chapters of Dream of the Red Chamber published in Chinese Literature translated by Yang Hsien-yi&Gladys Yang and the corresponding chapters in their later complete version A Dream of the Red Mansions,including introductions(or publisher’s note),the names of the novel,chapter names and speci c contents like diction,sentence construction,poems in the novel etc.rough comparison,it is found that the motivations for their self-translation-revision are manifold,such as selection of the major original editions,the in uence of external environment,and the translators’own considerations.And it is the translator’s own considerations that account for most part of their translation revisions,which embodies,to a large extent,the spirit of the translator and sets a good example for current translators.
