Evangelical Christians emerged as an important force in America’s political life in the late 1970s.However,sharp differences exist within the evangelical group. Many White evangelicals hold strong racist views and have been consistently and strongly supportive of the Republican Party, while evangelicals of racial minorities tend to favor the Democratic Party.During the Obama administration, white evangelicals felt hard pressed and feared that their dominant status would be undermined by the nation’s first black president.Donald Trump played the role of political savior by capitalizing on their status anxiety. After his ascent to the presidency,Trump delivered on his campaign promises and reinforced his popularity among white evangelicals. In the 2020 presidential election, white Evangelicals remained wavered in their support of Trump.Although the number of white evangelicals in America continues to decline, they are still highly effective in electoral mobilization and possess significant influence. Thus no 2024 GOP presidential contender could afford to ignore white evangelicals.
