The Chicken and Rat-hill are written by Mori Ogai,a literary giant in Japan’s Meiji Era,in the middle period of his literary career.Through the deliberate mentioning of the year 1902,the use of“appropriation for war”and financial disputes on some chicken,Mori Ogai indirectly narrates what Japan did in the first Sino-Japan War.Compared with the use of ambiguity in The Chicken, the author specifically provides the background of the novel in Rat-hill,which is the Russo-Japanese War.Underlying his plain personal narration,Mori Ogai has embedded imperial discourse in the two novels either directly or indirectly, which reveals his calm attitude towards the grave sufferings imperial wars bring to victimized countries.
