Edom was not viewed and remembered only in negative terms within the world of knowledge and memory of the literati of Late Persian/early Hellenistic Judah. But some of the texts they read and reread led to memories in which Edom was indeed singled out for YHWH and Israel’s enmity in ways that go beyond those for other political entities or ethnic groups in the surrounding area. Moreover, although Edom was indeed at times remembered in the context of the fall of Jerusalem and the subsequent exile, within the larger frame of the memoryscape of the literati,it was not thought of as the central, human agent that caused the exile, and at times its supposed participation in these events not recalled at all. This article addresses the possible reasons for the particularly complex, comprehensive social memory about Edom, the ultimate proximate Other, that existed among these literati and the messages and images that Edom evoked among them,as well as those they could formulate by using(their)Edom as a cypher within their ideological discourses.
