摘要
《骏马》是美国当代小说家科马克·麦卡锡"边疆三部曲"中成就最高的一部,讲述的是美国西部现代化转型时期,机械化大生产入侵德克萨斯,与新生代牛仔争夺西部空间的故事。现代性所代表的"进步"力量驱逐了美国西部"原始"的放牧生活,二次生成西部新的空间内涵,导致原本属于牛仔的西部空间走向解体与消逝。本文通过分析主人公约翰·格雷迪去墨西哥找寻西部精神的这一举动,探讨"后西部神话"时代,传统的美国西部空间的沦陷与新生代牛仔无处可依的孤独命运。
The novel All the Pretty Horses by the contemporary American writer Cormac McCarthy makes a crowning achievement among his Border Trilogy.It is narrated in this story that the mechanized mass production,which invaded Texas during the transformational period of western America’s modernization,plundered the new-generation cowboys’ western space.The modernity,which represents a"progressive" power,expelled the "barbaric" pastoral life off the American West and re-produced the West a new spatial connotation,which caused the collapse and vanishing of the cowboys’ western space.Through an analysis of John Grady,the protagonist,and his exploration of Mexico for the Spirit of the West,this paper discusses the fall of traditional western space and the solidarity and homelessness of the new-generation cowboy in "the post western-myth period."
