摘要
相较于广受关注的文本元话语和作为新兴热点的视觉元话语,标点元话语在学术英语研究中似乎鲜受关注,其中最为常用的圆括号元话语尤其缺乏分类的全面性和一致性,学术英语教材和课程教学亦少有着墨。本研究基于自建中外海洋科学学术期刊论文可比英语语料库,试图系统描摹应用型硬科学写作者使用圆括号标点元话语的话语实践,探究中外两个学术共同体在“方法”章节使用圆括号可能存在的异同、动因和影响。结果表明:(1)圆括号使用频率均较高,且国际主导学术共同体倾向使用频率更高、内置文本语更长及种类更丰富,因而所处语句句法结构和信息焦点得以改善;(2)圆括号可实现多种引导式元话语功能(注释、证据、内指、框架);(3)凭借显性详释、文本独立性证据、视觉内指等参数,可窥见海洋科学的学科属性和方法章节的体裁整体性在中外跨文化之间存在显性差异。本文据此从学科差异、体裁素养和跨文化学术共同体互动三个维度进行了探讨,将有助于元话语研究的拓展和中国学术话语权的推进。
Punctuation metadiscourse,in comparison with intensively studied textual metadiscourse and the emerging focus of visual metadiscourse,seems to receive little attention in EAP studies.As its most prominent type,parentheses particularly lack consensus in consistent and comprehensive taxonomies in the limited related literature,and furthermore,have been rarely addressed in EAP curriculum and textbooks.By compiling a comparable corpus of Marine Science Materials and Methods sections,our study attempts to explore the discursive practices of applied hard science writers in the use of parenthetical metadiscourse and their similarities/differences,motives as well as impacts.Results show that(1)parentheses,though frequently used in both disciplinary communities,tend to appear in higher frequencies in the international-dominated community;(2)parentheses can fulfil a variety of interactive metadiscourse functions;(3)significant cross-linguistic/cultural differences can be observed on disciplinarity and generic integrity in terms of such parameters as explicit-type code glosses,non-integral citations,and visual referencing.
