嘉兴南湖,以湖得名,以船盛名。全世界只有一个政党是在一条小船上诞生的,这就是在南湖红船上诞生的中国共产党。"革命声传画舫中,诞生共党庆工农。"南湖的红船,绿波与垂柳,连同几千年来的黄土文明,构成了绚丽多姿、色彩叠韵的江南画卷。"嘉兴"建县于秦朝,初名"由拳",三国时改名为嘉兴县,五代设置为州府,世称"丝绸之府""鱼米之乡""江南雄郡"。"嘉禾秀水"自古名扬四海,小桥流水,湖润禾城,北有澉浦湖,南有鸳鸯湖。王象之《舆地记胜》描写到:"鸳鸯湖在嘉兴城南,湖多鸳鸯,故以名之,亦名南湖。"南湖古名为滮湖、马场湖,五代以后方有园林。
