Cave lion(Panthera spelaea)remains have been described in all the Holarctic domain,however,its records in China are very rare.Here we describe an almost complete cranium from Salawusu,Northern China.Even though the dentition is largely broken or missing,the cranium shows key characters with clear cave lion affinity,particularly from the basicranium region.These features include wide and short nasals,wide rostrum without post-canine constriction,enlarged ectotympanic,flatted entotympanic,separated stylomastoid foramen and hyoid fossa and medially located hypoglossal foramen.The cranium is larger than the known cranial size range of Beringia cave lion P.spelaea vereshchagini,suggesting that the geographical delimitation of cave lion subspecies may be more complex than previously understood.The coexistence of cave lion with Palaeoloxodon in Salawusu indicates a high plasticity in diet and environmental adaptation for this species. 展开更多

Ballistic experiments were conducted on thin steel plates that are normally impacted by hemisphericalnosed projectiles at velocities higher than their ballistic limits. The deformation and failure modes of the thin steel plates were analyzed. A new method was proposed according to the experimental results and the perforation phenomenon of the thin steel plates to determine the radius of the bulging region. In establishing this new method, a dynamic method combined with the plastic wave propagation concept based on the rigid plastic assumption was adopted. The whole perforation process was divided into four consecutive stages, namely, bulging deformation, dishing deformation, ductile hole enlargement, and projectile exit. On the basis of the energy conservation principle, a new model was developed to predict the residual velocities of hemispherical-nosed projectiles that perforate thin steel plates at low velocities.The results obtained from the theoretical calculations by the present model were compared with the experimental results. Theoretical predictions were in good agreement with the experimental results in terms of both the radius of the bulging region and the residual velocity of the projectile when the strain rate effects of the target material during each stage were considered. 展开更多

Aiming at the problem that the consumption data of new ammunition is less and the demand is difficult to predict,combined with the law of ammunition consumption under different damage grades,a Bayesian inference method for ammunition demand based on Gompertz distribution is proposed.The Bayesian inference model based on Gompertz distribution is constructed,and the system contribution degree is introduced to determine the weight of the multi-source information.In the case where the prior distribution is known and the distribution of the field data is unknown,the consistency test is performed on the prior information,and the consistency test problem is transformed into the goodness of the fit test problem.Then the Bayesian inference is solved by the Markov chain-Monte Carlo(MCMC)method,and the ammunition demand under different damage grades is gained.The example verifies the accuracy of this method and solves the problem of ammunition demand prediction in the case of insufficient samples. 展开更多

Multiple complex networks, each with different properties and mutually fused, have the problems that the evolving process is time varying and non-equilibrium, network structures are layered and interlacing, and evolving characteristics are difficult to be measured. On that account, a dynamic evolving model of complex network with fusion nodes and overlap edges(CNFNOEs) is proposed. Firstly, we define some related concepts of CNFNOEs, and analyze the conversion process of fusion relationship and hierarchy relationship. According to the property difference of various nodes and edges, fusion nodes and overlap edges are subsequently split, and then the CNFNOEs is transformed to interlacing layered complex networks(ILCN). Secondly,the node degree saturation and attraction factors are defined. On that basis, the evolution algorithm and the local world evolution model for ILCN are put forward. Moreover, four typical situations of nodes evolution are discussed, and the degree distribution law during evolution is analyzed by means of the mean field method.Numerical simulation results show that nodes unreached degree saturation follow the exponential distribution with an error of no more than 6%; nodes reached degree saturation follow the distribution of their connection capacities with an error of no more than 3%; network weaving coefficients have a positive correlation with the highest probability of new node and initial number of connected edges. The results have verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the model, which provides a new idea and method for exploring CNFNOE's evolving process and law. Also, the model has good application prospects in structure and dynamics research of transportation network, communication network, social contact network,etc. 展开更多

Fault diagnostics is an important research area including different techniques.Principal component analysis(PCA)is a linear technique which has been widely used.For nonlinear processes,however,the nonlinear principal component analysis(NLPCA)should be applied.In this work,NLPCA based on auto-associative neural network(AANN)was applied to model a chemical process using historical data.First,the residuals generated by the AANN were used for fault detection and then a reconstruction based approach called enhanced AANN(E-AANN)was presented to isolate and reconstruct the faulty sensor simultaneously.The proposed method was implemented on a continuous stirred tank heater(CSTH)and used to detect and isolate two types of faults(drift and offset)for a sensor.The results show that the proposed method can detect,isolate and reconstruct the occurred fault properly. 展开更多

Objective In 2006,Alzheimer's Association Victoria Australia funded the authors to conduct a systematic review of the community education literature in order to assist the development of their own community education strategy.Methods This paper draws upon this research project to convey the predominant messages arising consistently across the evidence base relating to key national health priority areas.Particular attention is given to exploring the needs of minority groups.Results The evidence reviewed indicates the need for multi-faceted intervention approaches that are carefully planned and assessed to ensure sufficient exposure of the target audience to the health messages.Conclusion Such approaches remain to be empirically tested within the context of dementia risk reduction.Nevertheless,there are consistent models in the evidence base that can be applied with confidence to community education in the current domain. 展开更多

Disposal of chromium-containing collagenous waste,generated during the processing of leather,is a problem that is being addressed not only in the United States,but also world-wide.Alternative disposal methods are being sought because of environmental concerns and rising landfill costs.We have developed a process in which this waste can be treated with a variety of enzymes to extract gelatin and a hydrolysate.These recovered protein fractions,practically devoid of chromium,could be used in a wide range of products,including adhesives,cosmetics,films,encapsulating agents,animal feed and fertilizer.A chromium product is also isolated that can be chemically treated and recycled back into the tanning process.Finally,we have shown,by using a computer-assisted process simulation and cost estimation,that a profit could be realized by the tanneries,not only by reducing the need to landfill but also from the return from the sale of the protein products. 展开更多

Based on the field destructive test of six rock-socketed piles with shallow overburden,three prediction models are used to quantitatively analyze and predict the intact load−displacement curve.The predicted values of ultimate uplift capacity were further determined by four methods(displacement controlling method(DCM),reduction coefficient method(RCM),maximum curvature method(MCM),and critical stiffness method(CSM))and compared with the measured value.Through the analysis of the relationship between the change rate of pullout stiffness and displacement,a method used to determine the ultimate uplift capacity via non-intact load−displacement curve was proposed.The results show that the predicted value determined by DCM is more conservative,while the predicted value determined by MCM is larger than the measured value.This suggests that RCM and CSM in engineering applications can be preferentially applied.Moreover,the development law of the change rate of pullout stiffness with displacement agrees well with the attenuation form of power function.The theoretical predicted results of ultimate uplift capacity based on the change rate of pullout stiffness will not be affected by the integrity of the curve.The method is simple and applicable for the piles that are not loaded to failure state,and thus provides new insights into ultimate uplift capacity determination of test piles. 展开更多

The online diagnosis for aircraft system has always been a difficult problem. This is due to time evolution of system change, uncertainty of sensor measurements, and real-time requirement of diagnostic inference. To address this problem, two dynamic Bayesian network(DBN) approaches are proposed. One approach prunes the DBN of system, and then uses particle filter(PF) for this pruned DBN(PDBN) to perform online diagnosis. The problem is that estimates from a PF tend to have high variance for small sample sets. Using large sample sets is computationally expensive. The other approach compiles the PDBN into a dynamic arithmetic circuit(DAC) using an offline procedure that is applied only once, and then uses this circuit to provide online diagnosis recursively. This approach leads to the most computational consumption in the offline procedure. The experimental results show that the DAC, compared with the PF for PDBN, not only provides more reliable online diagnosis, but also offers much faster inference. 展开更多

In situ Raman analysis on the segregated near-equilibrium carbonate-fluid interaction at elevated temperatures(room temperature-260 °C) and pressures(13-812 MPa) in a hydrothermal diamond anvil cell(HDAC) reveals the preservation mechanism of porosity in deep carbonate reservoirs in the northeastern Sichuan Basin. The carbonate-fluid interaction was investigated by separately heating carbonate minerals and rocks with four different acid solutions(saturated CO2 and H2 S solutions, HCl, CH3COOH) in a sealed sample chamber. A minor continuous precipitation with increasing temperatures and pressures was observed during the experiments which caused minor sample volume change. The closed system is a preservation of pores and burial dissolution may not be the dominant diagenesis in the origin of porosity. Thin section photomicrographs observations in Changxing and Feixianguan Formations demonstrate that eogenetic pores such as moldic or intragranular pores with late small euhedral minerals, intergranular, intercrystal and biological cavity pores are the main pore types for the reservoirs. Early fast deep burial makes the porous carbonate sediments get into the closed system as soon as possible and preserves the pores created in the early diagenetic stage to make significant contribution to the deep reservoir quality. The anomalous high porosity at a given depth may come from the inheritance of primary pores and eogenetic porosity is fundamental to carbonate reservoir development. The favorable factors for deep reservoir origin include durable meteoric leaching, early fast deep burial, early dolomitization, etc. This deep pores preservation mechanism may be of great importance to the further exploration in deep carbonate reservoirs in the northeastern Sichuan Basin. 展开更多

Objective: The purpose of this study to determine the prevalence of both pre-hypertension and hypertension and risk factors associated with newly diagnosed Saudi military active duty service personnel.Methods: Community-based screening of 1283 Saudi military active duty service personnel was conducted during the period September-December 2007 at six randomly selected out of a total of 15 military units of Taif region,Western of Saudi Arabia.Screening tools included self-administrated questionnaire,general physical examination,anthropometric measurements and assessment of blood pressure.Results: All participants were Saudi males.Their age ranged from 19-56 years old with mean ± SD of 37.2 ± 7.02.By applying the Joint National Committee on prevention,detection,evaluation,and treatment of high hypertension(JNC-7) criteria,214(17.3%) were considered pre-hypertensive.Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that obesity as measured by body mass index(OR=2.71 CI: 1.39-5.28),positive family history(OR=1.46 CI:1.03-2.06),ever smoking(OR=1.45 CI:1.05-2.02),and increased waist circumference(OR=1.04 CI:1.02-1.06) were the significant predictors of workplace newly diagnosed hypertension among military active duty personnel.Conclusion: Pre-hypertension is a common hidden problem and it predicts the development of frank hypertension.Findings of the current study support the recommendation of lifestyle modification for pre-hypertension patients.However,further prospective studied are required to determine the role of pharmacotherapy in pre-hypertension. 展开更多

The effect of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid(EDTA) modification on the physico-chemical properties and catalytic performance of silica nanosprings(NS) supported cobalt(Co) catalyst was investigated in the conversion of syngas(H^(2+) CO) to hydrocarbons by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis(FTS). The unmodified Co/NS and modified Co/NS-EDTA catalysts were synthesized via an impregnation method. The prepared Co/NS and Co/NS-EDTA catalysts were characterized before the FTS reaction by BET surface area,X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),temperature programmed reduction(TPR),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),differential thermal analysis(DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) in order to find correlations between physico-chemical properties of catalysts and catalytic performance. FTS was carried out in a quartz fixedbed microreactor(H_2/CO of 2 ∶1,230 ℃ and atmospheric pressure) and the products trapped and analyzed by GC-TCD and GC-MS to determine CO conversion and reaction selectivity. The experimental results indicated that the modified Co/NS-EDTA catalyst displayed a more-dispersed phase of Co_3O_4 nanoparticles(10.9%) and the Co_3O_4 average crystallite size was about 12.4 nm. This paper proposes an efficient scheme to reduce the pre-correlation bandwidth effect in the global navigation satellite system(GNSS)receiver filtering process.It is mainly based on the application of a spectral transformation to the satellite-emitted signal that effectively reduces its band.At the receiver's end,this operation causes the spreading of noise over a much wider band than that used by the radio frequency stage.Consequently,the resulting auto-correlation function in the acquisition process acquires properties that enhance considerably the performance of the receiver in the presence of the multipath and noise disturbing phenomena.The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is a plausible solution for both multipath and noise problems in the GNSS applications for any limited value of the pre-correlation bandwidth in the receiver filter. 展开更多

Oxygen fuels have broad application prospects and great potential for realizing efficient and clean combustion,and hence this study applies diesel/n-butanol blends to explore the influence of split-injection strategy on combustion and emission characteristics.Simultaneously,changing the way of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR)gas introduction forms uneven in-cylinder components distribution,and utilizing EGR stratification optimizes the combustion process and allows better emission results.The results show that the split-injection strategy can reduce the NO_(x)emissions and keep smoke opacity low compared with the single injection,but the rise in accumulation mode particles is noticeable.NO_(x)emissions show an upward trend as the injection interval expands,while soot emissions are significantly reduced.The increase in pre-injection proportion causes the apparent low-temperature heat release,and the two-stage heat release can be observed during the process of main combustion heat release.More pre-injection mass makes NO_(x)gradually increase,but smoke opacity reaches the lowest point at 15%pre-injection proportion.EGR stratification can optimize the emission results under the split injection strategy,especially the considerable suppression of accumulation mode particulate emissions.Above all,fuel stratification coupled with EGR stratification is beneficial for further realizing the in-cylinder purification of pollutants. 展开更多
