Hot rolled strip requires diverse and flexible control of cooling path in order to take full advantages of strengthening mechanisms such as fine grain strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and transformation strengthening, adapting to the development of advanced steel materials and the requirement of reduction-manufacturing. Ultra fast cooling can achieve a great range of cooling rate, which provides the means that the hardened austenite obtained in high temperature region can keep at different dynamic transformation temperatures. Meanwhile, through the rational allocation of the UFC (ultra fast cooling) and LFC (laminar flow cooling), more flexible cooling path control and cooling strategy of hot rolled strip are obtained. Temperature distribution and control strategies under different cooling paths based on UFC are investigated. The process control temperature can be limited within 18 ℃, and the mechanical properties of the steels get a great leap forward due to the cooling paths and strategies, which can decrease costs and create great economic benefits for the iron and steel enterprises. 展开更多

In terms of tandem cold mill productivity and product quality, a multi-objective optimization model of rolling schedule based on cost fimction was proposed to determine the stand reductions, inter-stand tensions and rolling speeds for a specified product. The proposed schedule optimization model consists of several single cost fi.mctions, which take rolling force, motor power, inter-stand tension and stand reduction into consideration. The cost function, which can evaluate how far the rolling parameters are from the ideal values, was minimized using the Nelder-Mead simplex method. The proposed rolling schedule optimization method has been applied successfully to the 5-stand tandem cold mill in Tangsteel, and the results from a case study show that the proposed method is superior to those based on empirical formulae. 展开更多

The original coarse grains with an average grain size of 60... AA1060 aluminum foil was rolled from 4 mm to 20 μm by asymmetric rolling without intermediate annealing. The microstructures and textures were investigated. The original coarse grains with an average grain size of 60 μm were refined to fine equiaxed grains with an average grain size of about 500 nm with mainly large grain boundaries. During the rolling, the intensities of copper texture C-{112}<111> and brass texture B-{011}<211> gradually increased, and most crystallites aggregated along the β and τ orientation lines. The orientation intensity reached the maximum value 26 when the foil was rolled to 500 μm, but significantly decreased to 16 when the thickness became 20 μm, and the texture mainly consisted of a rotation cubic texture RC-{100}<011>. With the combined forces including drawing, compressing and shearing, severe plastic deformation was obtained during the asymmetric rolling, promoting dynamic recrystallization at room temperature. Because of a combined force in the deformation zone and shear force along the normal direction, dynamic recrystallization occurs during the asymmetric rolling; therefore, the average grain size is significantly refined. The texture intensity of ultrathin strip first increases, i.e., work hardening, and then decreases mainly because of dynamic recrystallization. 展开更多

With the application of ANSYS/LS-DYNA, simulation analysis was used to research this process. The various factors which have a great influence on fishtail shapes were analysed, such as initial width, initial thickness, radius of the edger roll and horizontal roll, edging draught,horizontal reduction rate, and friction coefficient of the surface. Then the curves that can describe the shapes were obtained. After a certain time of self-learning, the optimized curves were given out. At last, through the fitting of the simulation test results, the math models for the area of fishtail defect changing with the presented factors were received. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the prediction for the fishtail shapes is more than 95%. With the application of the prediction for the fishtail shapes and the area of the fishtail defect, the loss rate of the slab is decreased by about 0.1%. 展开更多

Electrical steel sheets with 6.5%(mas fraction) Si with good shapes and superior magnetic inductions were successfully produced by a specially designed processing route including ingot casting, hot rolling and warm rolling both with interpass thermal treatment, and final annealing. The sheets were of 0.2 mm and 0.3 mm thick over 140 mm width. A detailed study of the microstructural and textural evolutions from the hot rolling to annealing was carried out by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron backscattered diffraction. The hot rolled sheet characterized by near-equiaxed grains was dominated by the mixture of <001>//ND fiber(λ-fiber), <110>//RD fiber(α-fiber) and <111>//ND fiber(γ-fiber) textures owing to the partial recrystallization and strain induced boundary migration(SIBM) during the hot rolling interpass thermal treatment. The static recovery and SIBM during the warm rolling interpass thermal treatment result in large and elongated warm rolling grains. The warm rolling texture is dominated by obvious λ, Goss and strong γ-fiber textures. The application of the interpass thermal treatment during hot and warm rolling significantly enhances the impact of SIBM during annealing, which is responsible for the formation of the moderate λ-fiber, some near-λ fiber texture components and the obviously weakened γ-fiber texture in the annealed sheet, leading to a higher magnetic induction compared to the commercially produced 6.5% Si steel by chemical vapor deposition(CVD). 展开更多

As the spring equation is limited to the accuracy of mill stiffness and the linearity of the mill spring curve, the traditional gaugemeter automatic gauge control(GM-AGC) system based on spring equation cannot meet the requirements of practical production. In allusion to this problem, a kind of novel GM-AGC system based on mill stretch characteristic curve was proposed. The error existing in calculating strip thickness by spring equation were analyzed first. And then the mill stretch characteristic curve which could effectively eliminate the influence of mill stiffness was described. The novel GM-AGC system has been applied successfully in a hot strip mill, the application results show that the thickness control precision is improved significantly, with the novel GM-AGC system, over 98.6% of the strip thickness deviation of 3.0 mm class can be controlled within the target tolerances of ±20 μm. 展开更多

A heat transfer model of furnace roller cooling process was established based on analysis of furnace roller's structure. The complicated model was solved with iteration planning algorithm based on Newton search. The model is proved logical and credible by comparing calculated results and measured data. Then, the relationship between water flow velocity, inlet water temperature, furnace temperature and roller cross section temperature, outlet water temperature, water temperature rise, cooling water heat absorption was studied. The conclusions and recommendations are mainly as follows: l) Cooling water temperature rise decreases with the increase of water flow velocity, but it has small relationship with inlet water temperature; 2) In order to get little water scale, inlet water temperature should be controlled below 30 ℃. 3) The cooling water flow velocity should be greater than critical velocity. The critical velocity is 0.07 m/s and water flow velocity should be controlled within 0.4-0.8 m/s. Within this velocity range, water cooling efficiency is high and water temperature rise is little. If cooling water velocity increases again, heat loss will increase, leading to energy wasting. 展开更多

The effect of yield-to-tensile strength ratio(Y/T) on failure pressure of X70 pipeline without and with corrosion defects was investigated.The stress-strain response of materials was characterized by a power-law hardening curve.Two formulas to estimate the strain hardening exponent n for a special Y/T were obtained by least squared regression method and the influence of Y/T on n was analyzed.As an application of n-Y/T expression,the analytical solutions of burst pressure for X70 pipeline without and with corrosion defects were also obtained.The results indicate that the burst pressure of defect-free X70 pipe without corrosion defects is a function of the Y/T,pipe geometry t0/D0 and engineering tensile strength,and increases as Y/T or t0/D0 increases; whilst the burst pressure of corroded X70 pipe decreases with the increase of defect depths,d/t.Comparisons indicate that the present analytical solutions closely match available experimental and numerical data. 展开更多

The flow field and heat transfer of the strip surface due to the twin slot vertical jet impingement were investigated using the ANSYS FLUENT.The RNG k-ε model was carried out in the turbulent calculation.Systematic parametric research was conducted by varying the jet velocity of nozzle exit(V=5 m/s,7.5 m/s,10 m/s),the temperature of cooling water(T_w=280 K,300 K),the normalized spacing from the nozzle to the strip surface(H=10,15,20,33),and the normalized spacing from the nozzle to nozzle centerline(W=0,15,30).The velocity streamline of the flow domain and the general trend of the distribution of the local Nusselt number on the impingement surface of strip were obtained.The result indicate that,the average Nusselt number increases by about70%(90%) as the jet velocity is increased from 5 m/s to 7.5 m/s(from 7.5 m/s to 10 m/s),and T_w,Hand//have minimal effect on it.While the valley Nusselt number decreases by about 10%-43%with the increase of H and W.The functional relationship between the average Nusselt number and the systematic parameters is derived by the least square regression method. 展开更多

In order to improve the control performance of strip rolling mill, theoretical model of the hydraulic gap control(HGC) system was established. HGC system offline identification scheme was designed for a tandem cold strip mill, the system model parameters were identified by ARX model, and the identified model was verified. Taking the offline identified parameters as the initial values, online identification using recursive least square was carried out with model parameters changing. For the purpose of improving system robustness and decreasing the sensitivity due to model errors, the HGC system based on generalized predictive control(GPC) was designed, and simulation experiments for traditional controller and GPC controller were conducted. The results show that both controllers acquire good control effect with model matching. When the model mismatches, for the traditional controller, the overshot will increase to 76.7% and the rising time will increase to 165.7 ms, which cannot be accepted by HGC system; for the GPC controller, the overshot is less than 8.5%, and the rising time is less than 26 ms in any case. 展开更多

The fluid flow characteristics of the single bunch inclined jet impingement were investigated with different jet flow velocities,nozzle diameters,jet angles and jet-to-target distances for ultra-fast cooling technology.The results show that the peak pressure varying significantly from nearly 0.5 to above 13.4 kPa locates at the stagnation point with different jet diameters,and the radius of impact pressure affected zone is small promoted from 46 to 81 mm in transverse direction,and 50 to 91 mm in longitude direction when the jet flow velocity changes from 5 to 20 m/s.However,the fluid flow velocity is relatively smaller near the stagnation point,and increases gradually along the radius outwards,then declines.There is an obvious anisotropic characteristic that the flow velocity component along the jet direction is about twice of the contrary one where the jet anlge is 60°,jet diameter is 5 mm,jet length is 8 mm and jet height is 50 mm. 展开更多

To realize numerical simulation of rolling and obtain the hot forming process parameters for X70 HD steel, the flow stress behaviors of X70 HD steel were investigated under different temperatures(820-1100 ℃ and strain rates(0.01-10 s-1) on a Gleeble-3500 thermo-simulation machine. A new flow stress model was established. The linear and exponential relationship methods were applied to the parameters with respect to temperature and deformation rates. The rise of curve ends under certain conditions was analyzed. The flow stress of X70 HD steel predicted by the proposed model agrees well with the experimental results. So, it greatly improves the precision of the metal thermoplastic processing through finite element method and practical application of engineering. 展开更多

In order to overcome the nonlinearity of Mises criterion, a new linear yield criterion with a dodecagon shape of the same perimeter as Mises criterion was derived by means of geometrical analysis. Its specific plastic work rate expressed as a linear function of the yield stress, the maximum and minimum strains was also deduced and compared with that of Mises criterion. The physical meaning of the proposed yield criterion is that yielding of materials begins when the shear yield stress τs reaches the magnitude of 0.594σs. By introducing the Lode parameter, validation of evolution expressions of the proposed yield criterion with those based on Tresca, Mises and TSS criteria as well as available classical yield experimental results of various metals shows that the present results intersect with Mises results and coincide well with experimental data. Moreover, further application to the limit analysis of circle plate as an example is performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed yield criterion, and the subsequent comparison of limit loads with the Tresca analytical solutions and Mises numerical results shows that the present results are higher than the Tresca analytical results, and are in good agreement with the Mises numerical results. 展开更多

Brittle pro-eutectoid cementite that forms along prior-austenite in hypereutectoid steels is deleterious to mechanical properties. The optimum process parameters which suppress the formation of pro-eutectoid cementite in hypereutectoid steels with carbon content in the range of 0.8%-1.3% in mass fraction, were investigated. Pro-eutectoid cementite formation is effectively hindered by increasing the deformation temperature and decreasing the amount of strain. Transformation at lower temperatures close to the nose of the cooling-transformation diagram also reduces the tendency of the formation of pro-eutectoid cementite. Control of prior-austenite grain size and grain boundary conditions is important. Due to larger number of nucleation sites, finer prior-austenite grain size results in the acceleration of transformation to pro-eutectoid cementite. However, large prior-austenite and straight boundaries lead to less nucleation sites of pro-eutectoid cementite. The cooling rate and carbon content should be reduced as much as possible. The transformation temperature below 660 °C and the strain of 0.5 at deformation temperature of 850 °C are suggested. 展开更多

A novel cooling system combining ultra fast cooling rigs with laminar cooling devices was investigated.Based on the different cooling mechanisms,a serial of mathematic models were established to describe the relationship between water flow and spraying pressure and the relationship between water spraying heat flux and layout of nozzles installed on the top and bottom cooling headers.Model parameters were validated by measured data.Heat transfer models including air convection model,heat radiation model and water cooling capacity model were detailedly introduced.In addition,effects on cooling capacity by water temperature and different valve patterns were also presented.Finally,the comparison results from UFC used or not have been provided with respect to temperature evolution and mechanical properties of Q235B steel grade with thickness of 7.8 mm.Since online application of the sophisticated CTC process control system based on these models,run-out table cooling control system has been running stably and reliably to produce resource-saving,low-cost steels with smaller grain size. 展开更多

Controlling the looper height and strip tension is important in hot strip mills because these variables affect both the strip quality and strip threading. Many researchers have proposed and applied a variety of control schemes for this problem, but the increasingly strict market demand for strip quality requires further improvements. This work describes a dynamic matrix predictive control(DMC) strategy that realizes the optimal control of a hydraulic looper multivariable system. Simulation experiments for a traditional controller and the proposed DMC controller were conducted using MATLAB/Simulink software. The simulation results show that both controllers acquire good control effects with model matching. However, when the model is mismatched, the traditional controller produces an overshoot of 32.4% and a rising time of up to 2120.2 ms, which is unacceptable in a hydraulic looper system. The DMC controller restricts the overshoot to less than 0.08%, and the rising time is less than 48.6 ms in all cases. 展开更多
