Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common after surgery for acute aortic dissection (AAD) and increases in-hospital and long-term mortality. However, few data exist on the clinical and prognostic relevance of early preoperative AKI in patients with type A AAD We aimed to determine the incidence and predictors of preoperative AKI and the impact of AKI on in-hospital outcomes in patients with type A AAD. Methods From May 2009 to June 2014, we retrospectively enrolled 178 patients admitted to our hospital within 48 h from symp- tom onset and receiving open surgery for type A AAD. The patients were divided into no AKI and AKI groups and staged with AKI severity according to the KDIGO criteria before surgery. Results AKI occurred in 41 patients (23.0%). The incidence of in-hospital complications was significantly higher in patients with preoperative AKI compared to no AKI (41.5% vs. 9.5%, P 〈 0.001), including renal infarction (7.3% vs. 0, P = 0.012), and it increased with AKI severity (Ptrend〈 0.001). Patients with AKI had higher in-hospital mortality compared with pa- tients without AKI, although no significant difference was found (14.6% vs. 5.1%, P = 0.079). Multivariate analysis indicated that male gender, diastolic blood pressure on admission and bilateral renal artery involvement were independent predictors of preoperative AKI in patients with type A AAD. Conclusions Early AKI before surgery was common in patients with type A AAD, and was associated with increased in-hospital complications. Male gender, diastolic blood pressure on admission and bilateral renal artery involvement were major predictors for preoperative AKI. 展开更多

Ubiquitous on earth, bacteriophages are the most abundant entities in every ecosystem, but human knowledge about them is still limited compared with that about other forms of organisms. To enrich human knowledge and promote the utilization of bacteriophages,it is necessary to isolate and characterize as many as possible different bacteriophages. Here we describe the isolation of a T4-like bacteriophage IME08 and a rapid method for its genetic characterization. With this method we easily cloned a few random fragments of the bacteriophage genome.Sequence analysis of these random clones showed that bacteriophage IME08 shared the highest sequence similarity with T4-like Enterobacteria phage T4(94%identity),JS98(95% identity),JS10(95%identity) and RB14(94%identity) respectively, which suggested that IME08 belonged to T4-like bacteriophage genus. 展开更多

Objective Acute kidney injury (AKI) frequently occurs after catheter-based interventional procedures and increases mortality. However, the implications of AKI before thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) of type B acute aortic dissection (AAD) remain unclear. This study evaluated the incidence, predictors, and in-hospital outcomes of AKI before TEVAR in patients with type B AAD. Methods Between 2009 and 2013, 76 patients were retrospectively evaluated who received TEVAR for type B AAD within 36 h from symptom onset. The patients were classified into no-AKI vs. AKI groups, and the severity of AKI was further staged according to kidney disease: im- proving global outcomes criteria before TEVAR. Results The incidence of preoperative AKI was 36.8%. In-hospital complications was significantly higher in patients with preoperative AKI compared with no-AKI (50.0% vs. 4.2%, respectively; P 〈 0.001), including acute renal failure (21.4% vs. O, respectively; P 〈 0.001), and they increased with severity of AKI (P 〈 0.001). The maximum levels of body tem- perature and white blood cell count were significantly related to maximum serum creatinine level before TEVAR. Multivariate analysis showed that systolic blood pressure on admission (OR: 1.023; 95% CI: 1.003-1.044; P : 0.0238) and bilateral renal artery involvement (OR: 19.076; 95% CI: 1.914 190.164; P = 0.0120) were strong predictors of preoperative AKI. Conclusions Preoperative AKI frequently occurred in patients with type B AAD, and correlated with higher in-hospital complications and enhanced inflammatory reaction. Systolic blood pressure on admission and bilateral renal artery involvement were major risk factors for AKI before TEVAR. 展开更多

Remote tracking the variation of air quality in an effective way will be highly helpful to decrease the health risk of human short-and long-term exposures to air pollution. However, high power consumption and poor sensing performance remain the concerned issues, thereby limiting the scale-up in deploying air quality tracking networks.Herein,we report a standalone-like smart device that can remotely track the variation of air pollutants in a power-saving way.Brevity, the created smart device demonstrated satisfactory selectivity(against six kinds of representative exhaust gases or air pollutants),desirable response magnitude(164–100 ppm),and acceptable response/recovery rate(52.0/50.5 s),as well as linear response relationship to NO2.After aging for 2 weeks, the created device exhibited relatively stable sensing performance more than 3 months. Moreover,a photoluminescence-enhanced light fidelity(Li-Fi)telecommunication technique is proposed and the Li-Fi communication distance is significantly extended.Conclusively, our reported standalone-like smart device would sever as a powerful sensing platform to construct high-performance and low-power consumption air quality wireless sensor networks and to prevent air pollutant-induced diseases via a more effective and low-cost approach. 展开更多

Emerging infectious diseases are some of modern society's greatest threats. Like some great construction efforts designed to protect mankind, current public health measures against these emerging pathogens have not always been successful. This paper highlights the importance of embracing new interdisciplinary approaches towards emerging pathogen threats. One such approach, termed One Health, is quickly being embraced by professional organizations and public health institutions across the world as a way forward. This paper briefly discusses the above problems and preliminary steps taken by Chinese academic institutions to embrace the One Health approach. 展开更多

Objective: To facilitate manipulation of gene expression in different host cells, we used pEGFP-N1 as backbone to construct a versatile vector that can drive foreign gene expression in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Methods: A cloning and expression vector, pEGFP-NI-lac, was constructed by inserting the prokaryotic lac promoter of pUC 19 into the eukaryotic expression vector, pEGFP-N1, between the eukaryotic PCMV promoter and enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) open reading frames. To assess the function of pEGFP-NI-lac, the nucleotide sequence encoding the hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein was cloned into the multiple cloning sites. Western blotting analysis was used to detect the expression of the HCV core protein in Escherichia coli DH5a and HepG2 cells. Results: Restriction enzyme digestion and sequence analysis indicated that pEGFP-NI-lac was successfully constructed and the HCV core gene was cloned into this vector. The Western blotting results showed that pEGFP-NI-lac promoted expression of HCV core gene in prokaryotic E. coli DH5a and eukaryotic HepG2 cells. Conclusion: The pEGFP-NI-lac vector has been successfully constructed and functions in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. The EGFP reporter can be used as an insert-inactivation marker for clone selection or as an expression tag. This vector can be used for cloning and expression of genes in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, making gene cloning, expression and functional studies convenient as well as time- and labor-efficient 展开更多
