A highly-sensitive in-situ diagnosis approach for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has been developed in dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) based on pulsed cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS). Absorption bands of NO2 in a spectral region from 508 nm to 509 nm were used, and a detection limit of 17.5 ppb was achieved. At this level of sensitivity, the quantitative and real-time monitoring of the production and removal of NO2 are accomplished for the first time in the discharge region. By measuring the removal amount and rate at different NO2 initial number densities from 1.54 ×10^13 cm^-3 to 2.79 × 10^14 cm^-3, we determined the relationship between them and NO2 initial number densities. The removal amount linearly increases with the initial number density, while the removal rate increases logarithmically. At a lower initial number density, the removal rate is limited. By considering the chemical kinetic mechanism in plasma, a qualitative explanation for the above phenomena is proposed: the additional NO2 produced by discharge limits the removal rate, since the NO2 concentration is dominated by the competition between the forward reactions (production) and the reverse reactions (removal). 展开更多

Recently, a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopic (LIBS) system has been developed for in situ measurements of the chemical compositions of plasma facing materials (PFMs) in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). In this study, a LIBS system, which was used in a similar optical configuration to the in situ LIBS system in EAST, has been developed to investigate the spatial distribution of PFM elements at 10-4 Pa. The aim of this study was to understand the nature of the spatial distribution of atoms or ions of different elements in the plasma plume and optimize the signal to background ratio for the in situ LIBS diagnosis in EAST. The spatial profiles of the LIBS signals of C, Si, Mo and the continuous background were measured. Moreover, the influence of laser spot size and laser energy density on the LIBS signals of C, Si, Mo and H was also investigated. The results show that the distribution of the C, Si and Mo peaks' intensities first increased and then decreased from the center to the edge of the plasma plume. There was a maximum value at R ≈ 1.5 mm from the center of the plasma plume. This work aims to improve the understanding of ablating plasma dynamics in very low pressure environments and give guidance to optimize the LIBS system in the EAST device. 展开更多

In this paper, the influence of magnetic field strength on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been investigated for various pressures. The plasma plume was produced by employing Q-switch Nd:YAG laser ablation of an A1-Li alloy operating at a 1064 nm wavelength. The results indicated that the LIBS intensity of the A1 and Li emission lines is boosted with an increase of magnetic strength. Typically, the intensity of the A11 and Li I spectral emissions can be magnified by 1.5-3 times in a steady magnetic field of 1.1 T compared with the field-free case. Also, in this investigation we recorded time-resolved images of the laser-produced plume by employing a fast ICCD camera. The results show that the luminance of the plasma is enhanced and the time of persistence is increased significantly, and the plasma plume splits into two lobes in the presence of a magnetic field. The probable reason for the enhancement is the magnetic confinement effect which increases the number density of excited atoms and the population of species in a high energy state. In addition, the electron temperature and density are also augmented by the magnetic field compared to the field-free case. 展开更多

In this paper, a low pressure Ar/N2 shock plasma jet with clearly multicycle al- ternating zones produced by a DC cascade arc discharge has been investigated by an emission spectral method combined with Abel inversion analysis. Plasma emission intensity, electron, vi- brational and rotational temperatures of the shock plasma have been measured in the expansion and compression zones. The results indicate that the ranges of the measured electron temperature, vibrational temperature and rotational temperature are 1.1 eV to 1.6 eV, 0.2 eV to 0.7 eV and 0.19 eV to 0.22 eV, respectively, and it is found for the first time that the vibrational and rota- tional temperatures increase while the electron temperature decreases in the compression zones. The electron temperature departs from the vibrational and the rotational temperatures due to non-equilibrium plasma effects. Electrons and heavy particles could not completely exchange energy via collisions in the shock plasma jet under the low pressure of 620 Pa or so. 展开更多

The behavior of argon plasma driven by nanosecond pulsed plasma in a low-pressure plasma reactor is investigated using a global model, and the results are compared with the experimental measurements. The time evolution of plasma density and the electron energy probability function are calculated by solving the energy balance and Boltzmann equations. During and shortly after the discharge pulse, the electron energy probability function can be represented by a bi-Maxwellian distribution, indicating two energy groups of electrons. According to the effective electron temperature calculation, we find that there are more high-energy electrons that play an important role in the excitation and ionization processes than low-energy electrons. The effective electron temperature is also measured via optical emission spectroscopy to evaluate the simulation model. In the comparison, the simulation results are found to be in agreement with the measure- ments. Furthermore, variations of the effective electron temperature are presented versus other discharge parameters, such as pulse width time, pulse rise time and gas pressure. 展开更多

Benzene is a major industrial air pollutant and can cause serious human health disorders. In this paper an investigation on benzene destruction, in an atmospheric-pressure fast-flow pulsed DC-discharge by means of laser ionization combined with time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry, is reported. Most by-products including transient reactive species from the benzene discharge were characterized by molecular beam sampling combined with TOF mass spectrometry. It is showed that, with a gas mixture of 0.5% C6H6 in Ar, benzene can be effectively destroyed by discharge plasma. The intermediate species consisted of small fragments of CnHm (n=3-5, m = 1-11), cycle-chain species of CnHm (n =6-9, m = 7-10) and polycyclic species CnHm (n ≥9, m = 8-12). The alternation of mass peaks (intensity) with even/odd electrons was observed in the measured mass spectra. The results indicated that the alternation is mainly due to the different ionization potentials of the open shell and close shell species. Based on the examination of the features of the species' composition, the primary reaction pathways are proposed and discussed. 展开更多

Post-mortem methods cannot fulfill the requirement of monitoring the lifetime of the plasma facing components (PFC) and measuring the tritium inventory for the safety evaluation. Laserinduced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is proposed as a promising method for the in situ study of fuel retention and impurity deposition in a tokamak. In this study, an in situ LIBS system was successfully established on EAST to investigate fuel retention and impurity deposition on the first wall without the need of removal tiles between plasma discharges. Spectral lines of D, H and impurities (Mo, Li, Si ) in laser-induced plasma were observed and identified within the wavelength range of 500-700 nm. Qualitative measurements such as thickness of the deposition layers, element depth profile and fuel retention on the wall are obtained by means of in situ LIBS. The results demonstrated the potential applications of LIBS for in situ characterization of fuel retention and co-deposition on the first wall of EAST. 展开更多

To implement on-line, real-time monitoring for the surface morphology of Plasma-Facing Materials(PFMs) in tokamak, we developed a Laser Speckle Interferometry measurement approach. A laser ablation method was used to simulate the erosion process during Plasma-Wall Interactions in a tokamak. In the present investigation, we evaluated the results of laser ablation morphology changes on the surface of Mo material reconstructed by four different approaches(Flood-fill, Quality-guided, Discrete Cosine Transform(DCT) and Weighted-DCT). The morphology results measured by the weighted-DCT approach are very close to the measurement results from confocal microscopy with an average error rate within 7%. It is verified that the weighted-DCT algorithm has high accuracy and can efficiently reduce the influence of noise pollution coming from laser ablation, which is used as a proxy for erosion from plasma wall interaction. Additionally, the CPU computer time has been shortened. This is of great significance for the real-time monitoring of PFMs’ morphology in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak(EAST) in the future. 展开更多

In this work, a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer has been used to investigate the distribution of intermediate species and formation process of carbon clusters. The graphite sample was ablated by Nd:YAG laser (532 nm and 1064 nm). The results indicate that the maximum size distribution shifted towards small cluster ions as the laser fluence increased, which happened because of the fragmentation of larger clusters in the hot plume. The temporal evolution of ions was measured by varying the delay time of the ion extraction pulse with respect to the laser irradiation, which was used to provide distribution information of the species in the ablated plasma plume. When the laser fluence decreased, the yield of all of the clusters obviously dropped. 展开更多
