The value of form factor k at different drafts is important in predicting full-scale total resistance and speed for different types of ships. In the ITTC community, most organizations predict form factor k using a low-speed model test. However, this method is problematic for ships with bulbous bows and transom. In this article, a Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)-based method is introduced to obtain k for different type of ships at different drafts, and a comparison is made between the CFD method and the model test. The results show that the CFD method produces reasonable k values. A grid generating method and turbulence model are briefly discussed in the context of obtaining a consistent k using CFD. 展开更多

The authors previously introduced a semi-empirical formula that enabled fast estimation of the added resistance of ships in head waves, and in this study the formula is further refined for easy use in engineering applications. It includes an alternative ship draft correction coefficient, which better accounts for the wave pressure decay with ship’s draft. In addition, it only uses the speed and main characteristics of the ship and wave environment as input, and has been simplified to the extent that it can be readily processed using a pocket calculator. Extensive validations are conducted for different ship types at low to moderate speeds in various typical irregular sea conditions, and encouraging results are obtained. This relevant and topical research lies within the framework of the recent IMO MEPC.232(65) (2013) EEDI guidelines for estimating the minimum powering of ships in adverse weather conditions, which specify for the use of simple methods in current Level 2 assessment within engineering applications. Keywords: added resistance, minimum power, IMO regulation, EEDI regulation, weather coefficient, semi-empirical formulas, ships, head waves 展开更多

Inspired by the neuronal principles underlying the tetrapod locomotion, this paper proposed a biomimetic vestibular reflex central pattern generator( CPG) model to improve motion performance and terrain adaptive ability of a quadruped robot in complex situations, which is on the basis of central pattern generator( CPG) model constructed by modified Hopf oscillators. The presented reflex model was modified in the light of the particular joint configuration of the quadruped robot and the trot gait pattern. Focusing on slop locomotion of the quadruped robot with trot gaits, the cosimulations of the ADAMS virtual prototype,CPG mathematical expressions with vestibular reflex and Simulink control model were conducted. The simulation results demonstrated that the presented CPG controller with vestibular reflex was more efficient and stable for the quadruped robot trotting on slopes,c ompared with the different trotting control models. 展开更多

A nonlinear sliding mode adaptive controller for a thin-film diffractive imaging system is designed to achieve accurate pointing direction over the attitude of subarrays in large-diameter mirror arrays. The kinematics and dynamics equations based on error quaternion and angular velocity are derived, and a diffractive thin-film sub-mirror array controller is designed to point precisely. Moreover, the global stability of the controller is proved by the Lyapunov method.Since the controller can adaptively identify the inertia matrix of each sub-mirror system,it is robust to bounded disturbances and changes in inertia parameters. At the same time, the continuous arctangent function is introduced, which is effectively anti-chattering.The simulation results show that the designed controller can ensure the accurate tracking of the diffractive film in each sub-mirror in the presence of rotational inertia matrix uncertainty and various disturbances. 展开更多
