Fracture propagation in shale under in situ conditions is a critical but poorly understood mechanical process in hydraulic fracturing for deep shale gas reservoirs. To address this, hydraulic fracturing experiments were conducted on hollow double-wing crack specimens of the Longmaxi shale under conditions simulating the ground surface(confining pressure σ_(cp)=0, room temperature(Tr)) and at depths of 1600 m(σ_(cp)=40 MPa, Ti=70 ℃) and 3300 m(σ_(cp)=80 MPa, high temperature Ti=110 ℃) in the study area.High in situ stress was found to significantly increase fracture toughness through constrained microcracking and particle frictional bridging mechanisms. Increasing the temperature enhances rather than weakens the fracture resistance because it increases the grain debonding length, which dissipates more plastic energy and enlarges grains to close microdefects and generate compressive stress to inhibit microcracking. Interestingly, the fracture toughness anisotropy in the shale was found to be nearly constant across burial depths, despite reported variations with increasing confining pressure. Heated water was not found to be as important as the in situ environment in influencing shale fracture. These findings emphasize the need to test the fracture toughness of deep shales under coupled in situ stress and temperature conditions rather than focusing on either in situ stress or temperature alone. 展开更多

The presence of sealed or semi-sealed,multiscale natural fracture systems appears to be crucial for the successful stimulation of deep reservoirs. To explore the reaction of such systems to reservoir stimulation,a new numerical simulation approach for hydraulic stimulation has been developed, trying to establish a realistic model of the physics involved. Our new model successfully reproduces dynamic fracture activation, network generation, and overall reservoir permeability enhancement. Its outputs indicate that natural fractures facilitate stimulation far beyond the near-wellbore area, and can significantly improve the hydraulic conductivity of unconventional geo-energy reservoirs.According to our model, the fracture activation patterns are jointly determined by the occurrence of natural fractures and the in situ stress.High-density natural fractures,high-fluid pressure, and low effective stress environments promote the formation of complex fracture networks during stimulation.Multistage or multicluster fracturing treatments with an appropriate spacing also increase the stimulated reservoir area(SRA).The simulation scheme demonstrated in this work offers the possibility to elucidate the complex multiphysical couplings seen in the field through detailed site-specific modeling. 展开更多

Deep petroleum resources are in a high-temperature environment. However, the traditional deep rock coring method has no temperature preserved measures and ignores the effect of temperature on rock porosity and permeability, which will lead to the distortion of the petroleum resources reserves assessment. Therefore, the hollow glass microspheres/epoxy resin(HGM/EP)composites were innovatively proposed as temperature preserved materials for in-situ temperature-preserved coring(ITP-Coring),and the physical, mechanical, and temperature preserved properties were evaluated. The results indicated that:As the HGM content increased, the density and mechanical properties of the composites gradually decreased, while the water absorption was deficient without hydrostatic pressure. For composites with 50 vol%HGM,when the hydrostatic pressure reached 60 MPa,the water absorption was above 30.19%,and the physical and mechanical properties of composites were weakened. When the hydrostatic pressure was lower than 40 MPa,the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of composites were almost unchanged. Therefore, the composites with 50 vol%HGM can be used for ITPCoring operations in deep environments with the highest hydrostatic pressure of 40 MPa.Finally,to further understand the temperature preserved performance of composites in practical applications, the temperature preserved properties were measured. An unsteady-state heat transfer model was established based on the test results, then the theoretical change of the core temperature during the coring process was obtained. The above tests results can provide a research basis for deep rock in-situ temperature preserved corer and support accurate assessment of deep petroleum reserves. 展开更多

Understanding the size effect exhibited by the fracture mechanism of anisotropic geomaterials is important for engineering practice. In this study, the anisotropic features of the nominal strength, apparent fracture toughness, effective fracture energy and fracture process zone(FPZ) size of geomaterials were first analyzed by systematic size effect fracture experiments. The results showed that the nominal strength and the apparent fracture toughness decreased with increasing bedding plane inclination angle. The larger the specimen size was, the smaller the nominal strength and the larger the apparent fracture toughness was. When the bedding inclination angle increased from 0° to 90°, the effective fracture energy and the effective FPZ size both first decreased and then increased within two complex variation stages that were bounded by the 45° bedding angle. Regardless of the inherent anisotropy of geomaterials, the nominal strength and apparent fracture toughness can be predicted by the energy-based size effect law, which demonstrates that geomaterials have obvious quasi-brittle characteristics. Theoretical analysis indicated that the true fracture toughness and energy dissipation can be calculated by linear elastic fracture mechanics only when the brittleness number is higher than 10;otherwise, size effect tests should be adopted to determine the fracture parameters. 展开更多

As shallow resources are increasingly depleted, the mechanics'theory and testing technology of deep insitu rock has become urgent.Traditional coring technologies obtain rock samples without retaining the in-situ environmental conditions, leading to distortion of the measured parameters.Herein,a coring and testing systems retaining in-situ geological conditions is presented:the coring system that obtains in-situ rock samples, and the transfer and testing system that stores and analyzes the rocks under a reconstructed environment. The ICP-Coring system mainly consists of the pressure controller, active insulated core reactor and insulation layer and sealing film. The ultimate bearing strength of 100 MPa for pressurepreservation, temperature control accuracy of 0.97%for temperature-retained are realized.CH_(4)and CO permeability of the optimized sealing film are as low as 3.85 and 0.33 ppm/min.The average tensile elongation of the film is 152.4%and the light transmittance is reduced to 0%.Additionally,the pressure and steady-state temperature accuracy for reconstructing the in-situ environment of transfer and storage system up to 1%and±0.2 is achieved. The error recorded of the noncontact sensor ring made of lowdensity polymer is less than 6%than that of the contact test. The system can provide technical support for the deep in-situ rock mechanics research, improving deep resource acquisition capabilities and further clarifying deep-earth processes. 展开更多

Three-dimensional rock fracture induced by blasting is a highly complex problem and has received considerable attention in geotechnical engineering. The material point method is firstly applied to treat this challenging task. Some inherent weaknesses can be overcome by coupling the generalized interpolation material point(GIMP)and the convected particle domain interpolation technique(CPDI).For the media in the borehole, unchanged GIMP-type particles are used to guarantee a homogenous blast pressure.CPDITetrahedron type particles are employed to avoid the fake numerical fracture near the borehole for the rock material.A blasting experiment using three-dimensional single-borehole rock was simulated to examine the applicability of the coupled model under realistic loading and boundary conditions.A good agreement was achieved between the simulation and experimental results. Moreover, the mechanism of three-dimensional rock fracture was analyzed. It was concluded that rock particle size and material parameters play an important role in rock damage. The reflected tensile waves cause severe damage in the lower part of the model.Rayleigh waves occur on the top face of the rock model to induce a hoop failure band. 展开更多

In situ pressure-preserved coring(IPP-Coring)technology is considered one of the most efficient methods for assessing resources. However, seal failure caused by the rotation of pressure controllers greatly affects the success of pressure coring. In this paper,a novel spherical-cylindrical shell pressure controller was proposed. The finite element analysis model was used to analyze the stress distribution and deformation characteristics of the pressure controller at different rotation angles. The seal failure mechanism caused by the rotation of the pressure controller was discussed. The stress deviation rate was defined to quantitatively characterize the stress concentration.Based on the test equipment designed in this laboratory, the ultimate bearing strength of the pressure controller was tested. The results show that the rotation of the valve cover causes an increase in the deformation on its lower side.Furthermore, the specific sealing pressure in the weak zone is greatly reduced by a statistically significant amount, resulting in seal failure. When the valve cover rotates 5°around the major axis, the stress deviation rate is-92.6%.To prevent rotating failure of the pressure controller,it is necessary to control the rotation angle of the valve cover within 1°around the major axis. The results of this research can help engineers reduce failure-related accidents, provide countermeasures for pressure coring, and contribute to the exploration and evaluation of deep oil and gas resources. 展开更多

It is inadequate to study the shear failure anisotropy of shale in only 2D space.Aiming at a 3D analysis,a series of direct shear tests was conducted on Longmaxi shale with three typical bedding orientations:arrester, divider and short-transverse orientations.During testing, acoustic emission(AE)and digital image correlation(DIC)techniques were simultaneously employed to monitor failure development, after testing,X-ray computed tomography(CT)scanning was adopted to acquire and reconstruct the fractures inside typical ruptured samples for more detailed analysis. The results indicated that the shear strength parameters exhibited 3D anisotropies and those of the arrester sample did not have equivalent shear strength parameters to the shale matrix. The maximum(minimum)shear strength and cohesion were obtained with the divider(short-transverse)orientation,and the internal friction angle reached its maximum(minimum)with the divider(arrester)orientation.Combining the AE,DIC and CT techniques, four characteristic stress levels that can capture the progressive shear failure process of shale rocks were identified, and the onset and accelerated development of shear damage-induced dilation were observed at the crack initiation and coalesce stress thresholds, respectively.During the crack coalescence stage, the dominated microcracking mechanism transferred from tensile-mode to shear-mode.For the arrester and divider orientations, more tensile-mode AE events were generated due to the microcracking along the vertical beddings.Compared with the divider samples,a more complex fracture network with a larger fracture area and volume was obtained in the arrester samples, whose strengths were smaller. 展开更多
