Cemented tailings backfill(CTB)is a crucial support material for ensuring the long-term stability of underground goafs.A comprehensive understanding of its compressive mechanical behavior is essential for improving engineering safety.Although extensive studies have been conducted on the uniaxial compressive properties of CTB,damage constitutive models that effectively capture its damage evolution process remain underdeveloped, and its failure mechanisms are not yet fully clarified. To address these gaps, this study conducted systematic uniaxial compression tests on CTB specimens prepared with varying cement-tailings ratios. The results revealed distinct compaction and softening phases in the stress−strain curves.A lower cement-tailings ratio significantly reduced the strength and deformation resistance of CTB,along with a decrease in elastic energy accumulation at peak stress and dissipation energy in the post peak stage.Based on these findings,a modified damage constitutive model was developed by introducing a correction factor, enabling accurate simulation of the entire uniaxial compression process of CTB with different cement-tailings ratios.Comparative analysis with classical constitutive models validated the proposed model’s accuracy and applicability in describing the compressive behavior of CTB.Furthermore, particle size distribution and acoustic emission tests were employed to investigate the influence of cement-tailings ratio on failure mechanisms. The results indicated that a lower cement-tailings ratio leads to coarser particle sizes, which intensify shear-related acoustic emission signals and ultimately result in more pronounced macroscopic shear failure. This study provides theoretical support and practical guidance for the optimal design of CTB mix ratios. 展开更多

The object of this article is to investigate the energy evolution mechanism and failure criteria of cross-jointed samples containing an opening during deformation and failure based on the uniaxial compression test and rock energy principle. The results show that the energy evolution characteristics of the samples correspond to a typical progressive damage mode. The peak total energy, peak elastic energy, and total input energy of the samples all first decrease and then increase with an increase of half of the included angle, reaching their minimum values when this angle is 45°,while the dissipated energy generally increases with this angle. The existence of the opening and cross joints can obviously weaken the energy storage capacity of the rock, and the change in the included angle of the cross joint has a great influence on the elastic energy ratio of the sample before the peak stress, which leads to some differences in the distribution laws of the input energy. The continuous change and the subsequent sharp change in the rate of change in the energy consumption ratio can be used as the criteria of the crack initiation and propagation and the unstable failure of the sample, respectively. 展开更多

Residual coal pillars play an important role in mining the adjacent coal seam safely, managing the gobs and maintaining the stability of abandoned coal mines. The height to diameter ratio(H/D)affects the stability of residual coal pillars. In this study, uniaxial compressive tests of coal specimens with five H/D(2.0,1.5,1.0,0.8 and 0.6)were performed, and the stress, strain and acoustic emission(AE)were monitored. Results show that the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)and peak strain increase with H/D decreasing. An empirical equation is proposed to calculate the UCS based on the H/D.The AE activities during coal failure process can be separated into four periods. The span of quiet period and rapid decline period shorten with H/D decreasing. The smaller the H/D is,the more complicated the failure characteristics of coal will be.The failure form of coal with H/D of 2.0,1.5,and 1.0 is primarily shear failure, while splitting failure along the axial direction is the mainly mode when H/D is 0.8 or 0.6.The initiation, expansion, aggregation and connection of micro-cracks can be reflected by the real-time spatial evolution of AE event points. 展开更多

Anisotropic strength and deformability of the rock mass with non-persistent joints are governed by cracking process of the rock bridges. The dependence of cracking process of jointed rock masses on the two important geometrical parameters, joint orientation and joint persistence, was studied systematically by carrying out a series of uniaxial compression tests on gypsum specimens with regularly arranged multiple parallel pre-existing joints. According to crack position, mechanism and temporal sequence, seven types of crack initiations and sixteen types of crack coalescences, were identified. It was observed that both tensile cracks and shear cracks can emanate from the pre-existing joints as well as the matrix. Vertical joints were included and coplanar tensile cracks initiation and coalescence were observed accordingly. For specimen with joint inclination angle ,8=75~, it was found that collinear joints can be linked not only by coplanar shear cracks but also by mixed tensile-shear cracks, and that a pair of them can form a small rotation block. Seven failure modes, including axial cleavage, crushing, crushing and rotation of new blocks, stepped failure, stepped failure and rotation of new blocks, shear failure along a single plane and shear failure along multiple planes, were observed. These modes shift gradually in accordance with the combined variation of joint orientation and joint persistence. It is concluded that cracking process and failure modes are more strongly affected by joint orientation than by joint persistence, especially when joint inclination angle is larger than 45~. Finally, variations of macroscopic mechanical behaviors with the two geometrical parameters, such as patterns of the complete axial stress-axial strain curves, peak strength and elastic modulus, are summarized and their mechanisms are successfully explained according to their different cracking process. 展开更多

Hollow cylindrical sandstone specimens filled with Al,Pb and polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA),as well as hollow and solid specimens were tested under monotonic unconfined compression. The discrepancies in the elastic modulus, unconfined compressive strength and failure pattern of the specimens were studied and then illustrated. The interaction stress threshold and localized failure stress threshold were identified by the strain gauges on the rock and filling rod.The results indicated that unobvious changes in the strength and elastic modulus were found between the solid and hollow specimens, while for the hollow specimens with infillings, the strength decreases with increasing the stiffness of the infilling material. The filling material with a higher stiffness leads to a high hoop stress, and hence a stronger interfacial force. The specimens coupled with filling rod are mainly fractured with tensile cracks, while the solid and hollow specimens are typically split into blocky fragments with dominated shear fractures. Finally, the equivalent inner pressure in the opening was theoretically derived. The findings suggested in the experiments can be well explained using the theoretical thick-walled cylinder model. 展开更多

Considering strain localization in the form of a narrow band initiated just at peak stress, three analytical expressions for stressstrain curves of quasibrittle geomaterial (such as rock and concrete) in uniaxial tension, direct shear and uniaxial compression were presented, respectively. The three derived stressstrain curves were generalized as a unified formula. Beyond the onset of strain localization, a linear strain-softening constitutive relation for localized band was assigned. The size of the band was controlled by internal or characteristic length according to gradient-dependent plasticity. Elastic strain within the entire specimen was assumed to be uniform and decreased with the increase of plastic strain in localized band. Total strain of the specimen was decomposed into elastic and plastic parts. Plastic strain of the specimen was the average value of plastic strains in localized band over the entire specimen. For different heights, the predicted softening branches of the relative stressstrain curves in uniaxial compression are consistent with the previously experimental results for normal concrete specimens. The present expressions for the post-peak stressdeformation curves in uniaxial tension and direct shear agree with the previously numerical results based on gradient-dependent plasticity. 展开更多

In this study, the micro-failure process and failure mechanism of a typical brittle rock under uniaxial compression are investigated via continuous real-time measurement of wave velocities. The experimental results indicate that the evolutions of wave velocities became progressively anisotropic under uniaxial loading due to the direction-dependent development of micro-damage.A wave velocity model considering the inner anisotropic crack evolution is proposed to accurately describe the variations of wave velocities during uniaxial compression testing.Based on which, the effective elastic parameters are inferred by a transverse isotropic constitutive model, and the evolutions of the crack density are inversed using a self-consistent damage model. It is found that the propagation of axial cracks dominates the failure process of brittle rock under uniaxial loading and oblique shear cracks develop with the appearance of macrocrack. 展开更多

The particle image velocimetry (PIV) method was used to investigate the full-field displacements and strains of the limestone specimen under external loads from the video images captured during the laboratory tests. The original colorful video images and experimental data were obtained from the uniaxial compression test of a limestone. To eliminate perspective errors and lens distortion, the camera was placed normal to the rock specimen exposure. After converted into a readable format of frame images, these videos were transformed into the responding grayscale images, and the frame images were then extracted. The full-field displacement field was obtained by using the PIV technique, and interpolated in the sub-pixel locations. The displacement was measured in the plane of the image and inferred from two consecutive images. The local displacement vectors were calculated for small sub-windows of the images by means of cross-correlation.The video images were interrogated in a multi-pass way, starting off with 64×64 images, ending with 16×16 images after 6 iterations, and using 75% overlap of the sub-windows.In order to remove spurious vectors, the displacements were filtered using four filters:signal-to-noise ratio filter, peak height filter, global filter and local filter. The cubic interpolation was utilized if the displacements without a number were encountered. The full-field strain was then obtained using the local least square method from the discrete displacements. The strain change with time at different locations was also investigated. It is found that the normal strains are dependant on the locations and the crack distributions.Between 1.0 and 5.0 s prior to the specimen failure, normal strains increase rapidly at many locations, while a stable status appears at some locations. When the specimen is in a failure status,a large rotation occurs and it increases in the inverse direction. The strain concentration bands do not completely develop into the large cracks, and meso-cracks are not visible in some bands. The techniques presented here may improve the traditional measurement of the strain field, and may provide a lot of valuable information in investigating the deformation/failure mechanism of rock materials. 展开更多

To explore the effects of thermal treatment on cracking processes in granite, granite samples were thermally treated at 25-400 ℃ and then loaded under uniaxial compression. Active ultrasonic testing and passive acoustic emission(AE) monitoring were combined to monitor the damage characteristics of the samples. The uniaxial compression strength(UCS) of the sample treated at 200 ℃ shows no apparent change compared with that of the nonheated sample, while the UCS increases at 300 °C and decreases at 400 ℃. As the temperature increases from 25 to 400 ℃, the initial P-wave velocity(Vp) decreases gradually from 4909 to 3823 m/s, and the initial Vpanisotropy ε increases slightly from 0.03 to 0.09. As the axial stress increases, ε increases rapidly in the crack closure stage and unstable cracking stage. The attenuation of ultrasonic amplitude spectra also shows an obvious anisotropy. Besides, the main location magnitude of AE events decreases after thermal treatment, and low-frequency AE events and high-amplitude AE events increasingly occur. However, there is insufficient evidence that the treatment temperature below 400 ℃ has a significant effect on the temporal characteristics, source locations, and b-values of AE. 展开更多

Bedding structural planes significantly influence the mechanical properties and stability of engineering rock masses. This study conducts uniaxial compression tests on layered sandstone with various bedding angles(0°,15°,30°,45°,60°,75°and 90°)to explore the impact of bedding angle on the deformational mechanical response, failure mode, and damage evolution processes of rocks. It develops a damage model based on the Logistic equation derived from the modulus’s degradation considering the combined effect of the sandstone bedding dip angle and load. This model is employed to study the damage accumulation state and its evolution within the layered rock mass. This research also introduces a piecewise constitutive model that considers the initial compaction characteristics to simulate the whole deformation process of layered sandstone under uniaxial compression. The results revealed that as the bedding angle increases from 0°to 90°,the uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of layered sandstone significantly decrease, slightly increase, and then decline again. The corresponding failure modes transition from splitting tensile failure to slipping shear failure and back to splitting tensile failure. As indicated by the modulus’s degradation, the damage characteristics can be categorized into four stages:initial no damage, damage initiation, damage acceleration, and damage deceleration termination. The theoretical damage model based on the Logistic equation effectively simulates and predicts the entire damage evolution process. Moreover, the theoretical constitutive model curves closely align with the actual stress−strain curves of layered sandstone under uniaxial compression. The introduced constitutive model is concise, with fewer parameters,a straightforward parameter determination process, and a clear physical interpretation. This study offers valuable insights into the theory of layered rock mechanics and holds implications for ensuring the safety of rock engineering. 展开更多

The effect of freeze-thaw(F-T)cycles on the mechanical behaviors and internal mechanism of rock mass is a critical research topic. In permafrost or seasonally frozen regions,F-T cycles have adverse effects on the mechanical properties of rock mass, leading to many serious disasters in mining and geotechnical operations. In this paper, uniaxial compression tests are carried out on cyan sandstone after different F-T cycles. The failure modes and damage evolution of cyan sandstone under F-T cycles are studied. In addition, from the perspective of fracture and pore volume, the calculation equations of rock strain under frost heaving pressure and F-T cycles are established and verified with the corresponding laboratory tests.Subsequently, based on the classical damage theory, the F-T damage variables of cyan sandstone under different F-T cycles are calculated, and the meso-damage calculation model of cyan sandstone under F-T-loading coupling conditions is derived.Furthermore, through the discrete element numerical simulation software(PFC^(3D)),the microscopic damage evolution process of cyan sandstone under uniaxial compression after F-T cycles is studied, including the change of microcracks number, distribution of microcracks, and the acoustic emission(AE)count. The goal of this study is to investigate the damage evolution mechanism of rock from the mesoscopic and microscopic aspects, which has certain guiding value for accurately understanding the damage characteristics of rock in cold regions. 展开更多

Traditional mechanical rock breaking method is labor-intensive and low-efficient,which restrictes the development of deep resources and deep space. As a new rock-breakage technology, microwave irradiation is expected to overcome these problems. This study examines the failure characteristics, weakening law,and breakdown mechanism of deep sandstone(depth=1050 m)samples in a microwave field. The macroscopic and microscopic properties were determined via mechanical tests, mesoscopic tests, and numerical simulations.Microwave application at 1000 W for 60 s reduced the uniaxial compressive strength of the sandstone by 50%.Thermal stress of the sandstone was enhanced by uneven expansion of minerals at the microscale. Moreover, the melting of some minerals in the high-temperature environment changed the pore structure, sharply reducing the macroscopic strength. The temperature remained high in the lower midsection of the sample, and the stress was concentrated at the bottom of the sample and along its axis. These results are expected to improve the efficiency of deep rock breaking, provide theoretical and technical support for similar rock-breakage projects, and accelerate advances in deep-Earth science. 展开更多

For understanding the damage and failure rule of rock under different uniaxial compressive loads and dynamic loads, tests on red sandstone were carried out on Instron 1342 electro-servo controlled testing system with different uniaxial compressive loads of 0, 2, 4 and 6 MPa. It is found that peak stress, peak strain, elastic modulus and total strain energy decrease with the increase of static compressive stress. Based on the test results, the mechanism on damage and failure of rock was analyzed, and according to the equivalent strain hypothesis, a new constitutive model of elastic-plastic damage was established, and then the calculated results with the established model were compared with test results to show a good agreement. The deformation and failure of coal and rock is energy-driving results according to thermodynamics. It is important to study the strain energy characteristics of coal-rock composite samples to better understand the deformation and failure mechanism of of coal-rock composite structures. In this research, laboratory tests and numerical simulation of uniaxial compressions of coal-rock composite samples were carried out with five different loading rates. The test results show that strength, deformation, acoustic emission(AE)and energy evolution of coal-rock composite sample all have obvious loading rate effects. The uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus increase with the increase of loading rate. And with the increase of loading rate, the AE energy at the peak strength of coal-rock composites increases first, then decreases, and then increases. With the increase of loading rate, the AE cumulative count first decreases and then increases. And the total absorption energy and dissipation energy of coal-rock composite samples show non-linear increasing trends, while release elastic strain energy increases first and then decreases. The laboratory experiments conducted on coal-rock composite samples were simulated numerically using the particle flow code(PFC).With careful selection of suitable material constitutive models for coal and rock, and accurate estimation and calibration of mechanical parameters of coal-rock composite sample,it was possible to obtain a good agreement between the laboratory experimental and numerical results. This research can provide references for understanding failure of underground coalrock composite structure by using energy related measuring methods. 展开更多

The influence of heterogeneity on mechanical and acoustic emission characteristics of rock specimen under uniaxial compress was studied with numerical simulation methods.Weibull distribution function was adopted to describe the mesoscopic heterogeneity of rocks. The failure process of heterogeneous rock specimen under uniaxial loading was simulated using FLAC 3D software.Five schemes were adopted to investigate the influence of heterogeneity. The results demonstrate that as the homogeneity increases, the peak strength and brittleness of rocks increase, and the macro elastic modulus improves as well.Heterogeneity has great influence on macro elastic modulus and strength when the homogeneity coefficient is less than 20.0.The volume expansion is not so obvious when the homogeneity increases. As the homogeneity coefficient increases the acoustic emissions modes change from swarm shock to main shock. When the homogeneity coefficient is high, the cumulative acoustic emission events-axial strain curve is gentle before the rock failure. The numerical results agree with the previously numerical results and earlier experimental measurements. 展开更多

The stability of cemented backfill mass is important to keep miners and equipment safe in underground backfill miming. The stress-strain behavior, resistivity and thermal infrared(TIR) characteristics of backfill mass under uniaxial compression were investigated. The monitoring system consisted of a TIR observation system, a stress-strain monitoring system and a resistivity measurement system. Precursory information for impending failure of cemented backfill mass was collected, including TIR, strain and resistivity precursors. The sensitivity and difference of different monitoring information to the same failure event were compared. The results show that the time-space evolution process of the resistivity and TIR is basically the same as the whole process from compression deformation to failure of backfill mass, and the time variation of resistivity and TIR is obviously characterized by stage. The resistivity precursor turns out earlier than the TIR and the strain. The resistivity relation with loading compression is anti-symmetry, decreasing as the compression stress increases before the peak strength of backfill mass. However, when the backfill mass enters into the phase of failure, the resistivity starts to increase as the stress increases. The change of the resistivity growth direction can be regarded as the resistivity-caution-point for the failure of backfill mass under uniaxial compression. It is also indicated that the TIR information mainly represents the surface temperature evolution in the process of compression before the backfill enters into the plastic-yield state. It can be a valuable tool to obtain the precursors for failure of cemented backfill mass for backfill mines. 展开更多

To investigate the influence of temperature on the physical, mechanical and acoustic emission characteristics of granites, uniaxial compression test,variable-angle shear test, acoustic emission signal monitoring and the measurement of physical parameters including mass, size and P-wave velocity were carried out on granite samples treated at temperatures T ranging from 25 to 900℃.The results show that the density and P-wave velocity decrease gradually with increasing T.As the temperature increases, the peak compressive stress decreases while the peak strain increases, due to the fact that a high temperature induces the escaping of waters within granites, the expanding of mineral grains and the generations of fractures. With the increment of T,both the peak shear stress and the cohesion decrease, whereas the frictional angle increases.During the compressing and shearing tests, the maximum acoustic emission counts show a decreasing trend when T increases from 25 to 900℃.When T exceeds 573℃,the crystal lattice structure of quartz changes fromα-phase toβ-phase,decreasing the mechanical behavior of granites to a great extent. In addition, the results also indicate that T=500−600℃ is the critical temperature ramge to characterize the influence of temperature on the physical, mechanical and acoustic emission characteristics of granites. 展开更多

Design and construction of engineering structures in geomaterials with block-in-matrix texture(referred as bimrock) such as conglomerates, breccias and agglomerates are challenging tasks for engineers. When dealing with these materials in important structures such as open pits with high walls and pillars of deep underground mines, understanding the complete stress-strain behavior, including post-peak region,is a formidable yet crucial engineering practice. To study the post-peak behavior of bimrocks, artificial specimens were fabricated with a mixture of rock blocks and a cementing agent. All the experiments were conducted under uniaxial compression using a servo-control testing machine. The results show that the specimens with the highest block proportion(around 90% by mass) showed a small decrease in stress with strain increment in the post-peak region. The specimens with lower block proportions were characterized by an approximately steep fall in stress and following to residual stress.Based on the study,it is inferred that all the artificial specimens undergo post-failure deformation and the type of post behavior depends on rock block proportions. 展开更多

To investigate the static compressive properties and mechanical damage evolution of rubber cement-based materials(RCBMs) with dry-and wet-curing conditions, uniaxial compression and cyclic loading-unloading tests were carried out on rubber cement mortar(RCM). The mechanical properties of the uniaxial compression specimens cured at 95%(wet-curing) and 50%(dry-curing) relative humidities and cyclic loading-unloading specimens cured at wet-curing were analyzed. Under uniaxial compression, the peak stress loss ratio is higher for dry-curing than for wet-curing. The peak strain decreases with the increase of rubber content, and the peak strain increases with the decrease of curing humidity. Under cyclic loading-unloading, the variation trends of residual strain differences of the normal cement mortar and RCM at each cyclic level with the number of cycles are basically the same, but the failure modes are different. The analysis of the internal mesostructure by a scanning electron microscope(SEM) shows that initial damage is further enhanced by reducing curing humidity and adding rubber aggregate. The damage constitutive model based on strain equivalence principle and statistical theories was used to describe the uniaxial compression characteristics of RCM, and the law of mechanical damage evolution was predicted. 展开更多

Damage in rock salt has significant implication on permeability, which affects the tightness of underground salt cavern gas storage in further. During the leaching of a salt cavern, the brine with formation temperature and pressure can promote the self-healing of rock salt in the excavation damage zone (EDZ). Laboratory tests were conducted to study the promoting effect. The permeability of two intact rock salt specimens was tested. Then they were damaged into two kinds of the state respectively through uniaxial compression. After that, they were put in saturated brine (with a temperature of 50℃ and pressure of 12 MPa, which we called the repair environment in this paper) for 7 d. Finally, the permeability and mechanical properties were obtained after the damaged specimens being repaired. The results show that the permeability of intact rock salt is below 10^-19 m^2;the permeability increases by more than two orders because of damage;the permeability decreases significantly after being repaired, which can be comparable to its intact state. Discussions of the repair mechanisms are presented (especially the mechanism of recrystallization), which may help to provide significant guidance for the study of the tightness and stability of gas storage facilities in China. 展开更多
