To advance the understanding of the corrosion behavior of stainless steel bellows in marine atmospheric environments and enhance the precision of service life predictions, this study employs finite element simulations to investigate the pitting corrosion rates and pit morphologies of bellows peaks and troughs under varying electrolyte film thicknesses. The model incorporates localized electrochemical reactions, oxygen concentration, and homogeneous solution reactions. For improved computational accuracy, the fitted polarization curve data were directly applied as nonlinear boundary conditions on the electrode surface via interpolation functions.Simulation results reveal that the peak regions exhibit faster corrosion rates than the trough regions. With increasing electrolyte film thickness(from 10μm to 500μm),corrosion rates at both peaks and troughs decrease progressively, and after 120 hours of simulation, the maximum corrosion rate at the peaks declines from 0.720 mm/a to 0.130 mm/a,and at the troughs from 0.520 mm/a to 0.120 mm/a,with the disparity in corrosion rates diminishing over time.Furthermore,as corrosion progresses, pits propagate deeper into the substrate, exhibiting both vertical penetration and lateral expansion along the passive film interface, ultimately breaching the substrate. This research offers valuable insights into designing corrosion mitigation strategies for stainless steel bellows in marine environments. 展开更多

The stability of the roof in coal mining is crucial for ensuring safe extraction.Studying the mechanical behavior of rock beams under various conditions is essential for improving coal mining safety. However, research on the dynamic response of rock beams under sudden unloading remains limited. This study utilized a self-developed bidirectional loading and unilateral unloading test system to simulate how sudden lower strata subsidence induces the fracture of upper hard rock beams.Bottom unloading experiments were performed on rock beams with varying thicknesses and spans. The experiments recorded surface crack development and internal damage evolution using high speed photography and acoustic emission monitoring. The results show that rock beams experience multiple stress reductions after unloading, with the largest reduction occurring in the first stage.Flexural deformation was observed, becoming more pronounced as the thickness-span ratio decreased.Greater thickness increased shear cracks and crack expansion angles, while larger spans promoted tensile cracks, arched crack formation, and notable rock spalling.Acoustic emission analysis showed that signal count and energy increased with thickness and span. Finally, discrete element numerical simulations revealed the critical controlling role of harder rock strata in rock beam failure:when the harder strata are at the top, cracks are sharp, and shear failure is more likely;when they are at the bottom, the overall failure range expands, and cracks tend to form arches. These findings improve the understanding of dynamic rock beam fracture under sudden unloading and offer theoretical guidance for roof stability control in deep mining. 展开更多

At the first time, the finite element method was used to model and analyze the free vibration and transient response of non-uniform thickness bi-directional functionally graded sandwich porous(BFGSP)skew plates. The whole BFGSP skew-plates is placed on a variable visco-elastic foundation(VEF)in the hygro-thermal environment and subjected to the blast load. The BFGSP skew-plate thickness is permitted to vary non-linearly over both the length and width of the skew-plate,thereby faithfully representing the real behavior of the structure itself. The analysis is based on a four-node planar quadrilateral element with eight degrees of freedom per node, which is approximated using Lagrange Q_(4)shape function and C^(1)level non-conforming Hermite shape function based on refined higher-order shear deformation plate theory. The forced vibration parameters of the non-uniform thickness BFGSP skew-plate are fully determined using Hamilton's principle and the Newmark-βdirect integration technique.Accuracy of the calculation program is validated by comparing its numerical results with those from reputable sources.Furthermore,a thorough assessment is conducted to determine the impact of various parameters on the free and forced vibration responses of the non-uniform thickness BFGSP skew-plate.The findings of the paper may be used in the development of civil and military structures in situations that are prone to exceptional forces, such as explosions and impacts load. 展开更多

This work introduces a novel method for measuring thin film thickness, employing a multi-wavelength method that significantly reduces the need for broad-spectrum data.Unlike traditional techniques that require sev⁃eral hundred spectral data points, the multi-wavelength method achieves precise thickness measurements with data from only 10 wavelengths. This innovation not only simplifies the process of spectral measurement analysis but also enables accurate real-time thickness measurement on industrial coating production lines. The method effectively reconstructs and fits the visible spectrum(400-800 nm)using a minimal amount of data, while maintaining measurement error within 7.1%.This advancement lays the foundation for more practical and efficient thin film thickness determination techniques in various industrial applications. 展开更多

High pressure and water-bearing caverns ahead of a karst tunnel face tend to cause geological disasters, such as water and mud bursts. So, the determination of safe thickness of the reserved rock plug is a key technical problem to be solved for karst tunnel construction. Based on the Hoek-Brown nonlinear failure criterion, the minimum safe thickness of rock plug was investigated in the light of the limit analysis theory. On the basis of the proposed failure mode, the expression of the minimum thickness for rock plug was obtained by means of upper bound theorem in combination with variational principle. The calculation results show the influence of each parameter on safe thickness and reveal the damage range of rock plug. The proposed method is verified by comparing the results with those of the drain cavern of Maluqing Tunnel. The research shows that with the increase of compressive strength and tensile strength as well as constant A of Hoek-Brown criterion, the safe thickness decreases, whereas with the increase of cavern pressure, tunnel diameter, and constant B from Hoek-Brown criterion, the safe thickness increases. Besides, the tensile strength, or constants A and B affect the shear failure angle of rock plug structure, but other parameters do not. In conclusion, the proposed method can predict the minimum safe thickness of rock plug, and is useful for water burst study and prevention measures of tunnels constructed in high-risk karst regions. 展开更多

An attribute recognition model for safe thickness assessment between a concealed karst cave and a tunnel is established based on the attribute mathematic theory. The model can be applied to carrying out risk classification of the safe thickness between a concealed karst cave and a tunnel and to guarantee construction’s safety in tunnel engineering.Firstly, the assessment indicators and classification standard of safe thickness between a concealed karst cave and a tunnel are studied based on the perturbation method. Then some attribute measurement functions are constructed to compute the attribute measurement of each single index and synthetic attribute measurement. Finally, the identification and classification of risk assessment of safe thickness between a concealed karst cave and a tunnel are recognized by the confidence criterion. The results of two engineering application show that the evaluation results agree well with the site situations in construction. The results provide a good guidance for the tunnel construction. 展开更多

The dynamic model of cold rolling mill based on strip flatness and thickness integrated control was proposed, containing the following sub-models:the rolling process model, the dynamic model of rolls along axial direction, and the compensation model.Based on the rule of volume flow rate, the dynamic rolling process model was built. The work roll and backup roll were taken as elastic continuous bodies, the effect of shear and moment of inertia were taken into consideration, and then the dynamic model of rolls was built. The two models were coupled together, and the dynamic model of rolling mill was built. In the dynamic model, the thermal expansion of the rolls, the wear of the rolls and other related parameters can not be considered. In order to compensate the dynamic model, the coupled static model of rolls and strip was applied. Then, according to the inner relationship of these models, the dynamic model and the compensation model were coupled, and the dynamic model of rolling mill based on the strip flatness and thickness integrated control was built. The dynamic simulation of the rolling process was made, and the dynamic thickness and the dynamic flatness information were obtained. This model not only provides a theory basis for the virtual rolling, but also provides a platform for the application of advanced control theory. 展开更多

Longhole caving method was used to mine gently inclined thick orebody step by step in a test stope of tin mine under complex filling body. The problem that the complex filling body around the stope affects the stability of roof thickness, chamber and spacer pillar in actual mining was investigated; meanwhile, the formed goaf during mining is so vulnerable that surrounding rock collapses early. Based on this point, elasticity mechanics and limit span theory were used to study separately the roof thickness and the span limit of goaf formed in mining, and then a reasonable roof thickness of 8 m and goaf span of 14 m are proposed. In addition, the stability of roof thickness, chamber and spacer pillar were investigated and analyzed by using numerical analysis method; meanwhile, the field monitoring on the displacement of caving chamber was conducted. The results show that the maximum compressive stress of surrounding rock is 20 MPa, and the maximum tensile stress is 1.2 MPa, which is less than the ultimate tensile strength of 2.4 MPa. Moreover, plastic zone has little influence on stope stability. In addition, the displacement of 11 mm is also smaller. The displacement monitoring results are consistent with the numerical results. Thus, the roof thickness and span of goaf proposed are safe. 展开更多

The geological hazards, such as water inrush and mud outburst, are easily induced by the high water pressure caverns ahead of a karst tunnel face. Therefore, it is a pivotal issue to determine the reserved thickness of rock plug during the construction of tunnels. The limit analysis principle is employed to analyze the safe thickness from the point of energy dissipation, and the nonlinear and non-associated characteristics of geotechnical materials are both considered. On the basis of a plane failure pattern of rock plug, the expressions of detaching curve and rock plug thickness are derived. The effect of each parameter on the safe thickness of rock plug is discussed in detail, which interprets the corresponding failure scope of rock plug. The obtained results indicate that the thickness of rock plug is highly influenced by the nonlinear dilatancy coefficient and the nonlinear coefficient. The proposed method is validated by a comparison of the calculated results with those of the engineering project of the "526 karst cavern" of Yunwushan tunnel. This proposed method can provide reference basis for the design and excavation of karst tunnels in the future. 展开更多

The distribution and magnitude of surface substrates were investigated by finite element method and subsurface stresses of the (FEM). The models of coating single-layer sprayed-coatings on monolithic configurations with different thicknesses and elastic modulus ratios of coating to substrate were introduced, and the effects of thickness and elastic modulus ratio on the stresses were addressed. The calculation results show that the coating/substrate interface shear stress obviously decreases with increasing coating thickness, due to the location of the maximum shear stress moving away from the coating/substrate interface. At the same time, the magnitude of von Mises stress also declines in the case of thicker coatings. However, the high elastic modulus ratio results in extremely high maximum shear stress and the severe discontinuity of the von Mises stress curves, which leads to the intensive stress concentration on the coating/substrate interface. So the coating configurations with the larger coating thickness and lower difference of elastic modulus between coating and substrate exhibit excellent resistant performance of rolling contact fatigue (RCF). 展开更多

The hot rolling experiment of AZ31 magnesium alloy was carried out by laying anoverlay mold at the initial temperature of 400℃.According to the Mizushima automatic plan view pattern control system(MAS)rolling theory and the cross rolling process, different reductions in the middle and edges of the magnesium alloy were realized, and the influence of the regional controlled reduction rolling on the edge cracks and microstructure gradient of the magnesium alloy were analyzed. It is shown that this rolling approach has reduced the maximum edge crack depth of the rolled piece by 56.85%,and there is a weakening tendency in the base surface texture of the strip edge, the base surface texture density drops from 23.97 to 17.48 after ordinary flat rolling. It exhibits basal texture gradients from the edge to the middle of the sheet along the RD direction, which reflected the uneven deformation of the sheets. It is suitable for the processing of metal molds that require large edge reductions such as mobile phone shells, and provided a theoretical basis for the variable thickness rolling of the magnesium alloy strip. 展开更多

The gear was divided into three annular segments along the locations of the step variations. Traverse displacement, rotation angle, shear force and fiexural moment were equal to ensure the continuity along the interface of the wheel hub, web and rim segments. The governing differential equations for harmonic vibration of annular segments were derived to solve the gear vibration problem. The influence of hole to diameter ratios, segment thickness ratios, segment location ratios, Poisson ratio on the vibration behavior of stepped circular Mindlin disk were calculated, tabletted and plotted. Comparisons were made with the frequencies arising from the presented method, finite elements method, and structure modal experiment. The result correlation among these three ways is very good. Anti symmetric four point bending specimens with different thickness, without and with guiding grooves, were used to conduct Mode Ⅱ fracture test and study the effect of specimen thickness on Mode Ⅱ fracture toughness of rock. Numerical calculations show that the occurrence of Mode Ⅱ fracture in the specimens without guiding grooves (when the inner and outer loading points are moved close to the notch plane) and with guiding grooves is attributed to a favorable stress condition created for Mode Ⅱ fracture, i.e. tensile stress at the notch tip is depressed to be lower than the tensile strength or to be compressive stress, and the ratio of shear stress to tensile stress at notch tip is very high. The measured value of Mode Ⅱ fracture toughness K ⅡC decreases with the increase of the specimen thickness or the net thickness of specimen. This is because a thick specimen promotes a plane strain state and thus results in a relatively small fracture toughness. 展开更多

Drying is a complicated physical process which involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the removal of solvents inside propellants.Inappropriate drying techniques may result in the formation of a hard skin layer near the surface to block the free access of most solvent through for long stick propellants with large web thickness, which lead to lower drying efficiency and worse drying quality. This study aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of drying process and clarify the mechanism of the blocked layer near the propellant surface.A new three-dimensional coupled heat and mass transfer(3D-CHMT)model was successfully developed under transient conditions. The drying experiment results show that the 3DCHMT model could be applied to describe the drying process well since the relative error of the content of solvent between simulation and experiment values is only 5.5%.The solvent behavior simulation demonstrates that the mass transfer process can be divided into super-fast(SF)and subsequent minorfast(MF)stages, and the SF stage is vital to the prevention of the blocked layer against the free access for solvent molecules inside propellant grains. The effective solvent diffusion coefficient(Deff)of the propellant surface initially increases from 3.4×10^(-6)to 5.3×10^(-6)m^(2)/s as the temperature increases, and then decreases to 4.1×10^(-8)m^(2)/s at 60-100 min.The value of Deffof surface between 0-1.4 mm has a unique trend of change compared with other regions, and it is much lower than that of the internal at100 min under simulation conditions.Meanwhile, the temperature of the propellant surface increases rapidly at the SF stage(0-100 min)and then very slowly thereafter. Both the evolution of Deffand temperature distribution demonstrate that the blocked layer near the propellant surface has been formed in the time period of approximately 0-100 min and its thickness is about 1.4 mm.To mitigate the formation of blocked layer and improve its drying quality of finial propellant products effectively,it should be initially dried at lower drying temperature(30-40℃)in 0-100 min and then dried at higher drying temperature(50-60℃)to reduce drying time for later drying process in double base gun propellants. The present results can provide theoretical guidance for drying process and optimization of drying parameters for long stick propellants with large web thickness. 展开更多

A novel thickness measurement method for surface insulation coating of silicon steel based on NIR spectrometry is explored. The NIR spectra of insulation coating of silicon steel were collected by acousto-optic tunable filter(AOTF) NIR spectrometer. To make full use of the effective information of NIR spectral data, discrete binary particle swarm optimization(DBPSO) algorithm was used to select the optimal wavelength variates. The new spectral data, composed of absorbance at selected wavelengths, were used to create the thickness quantitative analysis model by kernel partial least squares(KPLS) algorithm coupled with Boosting. The results of contrast experiments showed that the Boosting-KPLS model could efficiently improve the analysis accuracy and speed. It indicates that Boosting-KPLS is a more accurate and robust analysis method than KPLS for NIR spectral analysis. The maximal and minimal absolute error of 30 testing samples is respectively-0.02 μm and 0.19 μm,and the maximal relative error is 14.23%.These analysis results completely meet the practical measurement need. 展开更多

The present study deals with development of conceptual proof for jute rubber based flexible composite block to completely arrest the projectile impacting the target at high velocity impact of 400 m/s through numerical simulation approach using finite element(FE)method. The proposed flexible composite blocks of repeating jute/rubber/jute(JRJ)units are modelled with varying thickness from 30 mm to 120 mm in increments of 30 mm and impacted by flat(F),ogival(O)and hemispherical(HS)shaped projectiles. All the considered projectiles are impacted with proposed flexible composite blocks of different thicknesses and the penetration behaviour of the projectile in each case is studied. The penetration depth of the projectile in case of partially penetrated cases are considered and the effect of thickness and projectile shape on percentage of penetration depth is statistically analyzed using Taguchi’s design of experiments(DOE).Results reveal that the though proposed flexible composite block with thickness of 90 mm is just sufficient to arrest the complete penetration of the projectile, considering the safety issues,it is recommended to use the flexible composite with thickness of 120 mm.The nature of damage caused by the projectile in the flexible composite is also studied.Statistical studies show that thickness of the block plays a prominent role in determining the damage resistance of the flexible composite. 展开更多
