The microstructures, mechanical properties, and fracture behaviors of an Al-5.9Zn-1.9Mg alloy subjected to thermomechanical treatment across different pre-rolling temperatures have been exhaustively investigated in present work. The pre-deformation temperature exerts a modest influence on grain morphology, while it profoundly impacts the dislocation configurations and precipitation behaviors.Elevating the rolling temperature from ambient to 170℃results in a reduction in dislocation density within grains accompanied by a notable enhancement in their distributional uniformity. While advancing the temperature to 320℃prompts the premature formation of precipitates during deformation, which diminishes the precipitation during the subsequent ageing.Tensile results reveal that the thermomechanical treatment incorporating pre-rolling at 170℃confers a substantial strengthening effect on the alloy on the basis of both grain boundary strengthening and dislocation strengthening stemmed from pre-deformation along with the precipitation strengthening generated by ageing.Furthermore, the microstructure exhibits a relatively scarce presence of inhomogeneous features such as dislocation pile-ups and micro shear bands, contributing favorably to enhance the ductility of the alloy that presents the mixture of cleavage fracture and dimple-induced failure. 展开更多

Because of actual requirement, shield machine always excavates with an inclined angle in longitudinal direction.Since many previous studies mainly focus on the face stability of the horizontal shield tunnel, the effects of tensile strength cut-off and pore water pressure on the face stability of the longitudinally inclined shield tunnel are not well investigated.A failure mechanism of a longitudinally inclined shield tunnel face is constructed based on the spatial discretization technique and the tensile strength cut-off criterion is introduced to modify the constructed failure mechanism. The pore water pressure is introduced as an external force into the equation of virtual work and the objective function of the chamber pressure of the shield machine is obtained. Moreover, the critical chamber pressure of the longitudinally inclined shield tunnel is computed by optimal calculation.Parametric analysis indicates that both tensile strength cut-off and pore water pressure have a significant impact on the chamber pressure and the range of the collapse block. Finally, the theoretical results are compared with the numerical results calculated by FLAC3D software which proves that the proposed approach is effective. 展开更多

In this work, tensile mechanical behavior of 316L steels fabricated by three different processing methods(casting, powder extrusion printing(PEP)and laser powder bed fusion(LPBF))was studied in the presence of liquid lead-bismuth eutectic(LBE)and air at 350℃.The results show that all three steels tested in LBE are not subjected to evident degradation of tensile elongation to failure and strength compared to those tested in air, suggesting that LME does not occur regardless of the processing methods. The LPBF 316L steel exhibits the highest yield strength(420-435 MPa),followed by casting 316 L(~242 MPa)and PEP 316L(146-165 MPa).Ultimate tensile strength of three steels is comparable and ranges from 427 to 485 MPa.The PEP and casting 316L steels have similar total elongation to failure(i.e.,40.0%-43.8%),whereas this property decreases markedly to 18.6%-19.5% for the LPBF 316 L steel. The superior strength and relatively low ductility of the LPBF 316L steel can be attributed to nanosized dislocations trapped at cell structures which can produce a remarkable strengthening effect to the steel matrix.By contrast, due to massive residual micropores, the PEP 316L steel has the lowest strength. 展开更多

The effect of yield-to-tensile strength ratio(Y/T) on failure pressure of X70 pipeline without and with corrosion defects was investigated. The stress-strain response of materials was characterized by a power-law hardening curve. Two formulas to estimate the strain hardening exponent n for a special Y/T were obtained by least squared regression method and the influence of Y/T on n was analyzed. As an application of n-Y/T expression, the analytical solutions of burst pressure for X70 pipeline without and with corrosion defects were also obtained. The results indicate that the burst pressure of defect-free X70 pipe without corrosion defects is a function of the Y/T,pipe geometry t0/D0 and engineering tensile strength, and increases as Y/T or t0/D0 increases; whilst the burst pressure of corroded X70 pipe decreases with the increase of defect depths,d/t.Comparisons indicate that the present analytical solutions closely match available experimental and numerical data. 展开更多

Tensile failure(spalling or slabbing)often occurs on the sidewall of deep tunnel, which is closely related to the coupled stress state of deep rock mass under high pre-static load and dynamic disturbance. To reveal the mechanism of rock tensile failure caused by this coupled stress mode, the Brazilian disc tests were carried on red sandstone under high pre-static load induced by dynamic disturbance.Based on the pure static tensile fracture load of red sandstone specimen, two static load levels(80%and 90%of the pure static tensile fracture load)were selected as the initial high pre-static loading state, and then the dynamic disturbance load was applied until the rock specimen was destroyed. The dynamic disturbance loading mode adopted a sinusoidal wave(sine-wave)load,and the loading wave amplitude was 20%and 10%of the pure static tensile fracture load, respectively. The dynamic disturbance frequencies were set to 1,10,20,30,40,and 50 Hz.The results show that the tensile failure strength and peak displacement of red sandstone specimens under coupled load actions are lower than those under pure static tensile load, and both parameters decrease significantly with the increase of dynamic disturbance frequency. With the increase of dynamic disturbance frequency, the decrease range of tensile strength of red sandstone increased from 3.3%to 9.4%when the pre-static load level is 80%.While when the pre-static load level is 90%,the decrease range will increase from 7.4%to 11.6%.This weakening effect of tensile strength shows that the deep surrounding rock is more likely to fail under the coupled load actions of pre-static load and dynamic disturbance. In this tensile failure mechanism of the deep surrounding rock, the stress environment of deep sidewall rock determines that the failure mode of rock is a tensile failure, the pre-static load level dominates the tensile failure strength of surrounding rock, and dynamic disturbance promotes the strength-weakening effect and affects the weakening range. 展开更多

Ultrasonic vibration can reduce the forming force, decrease the friction in the metal forming process and improve the surface quality of the workpiece effectively. Tensile tests of AZ31 magnesium alloy were carried out. The stress–strain relationship, fracture modes of tensile specimens, microstructure and microhardness under different vibration conditions were analyzed, in order to study the effects of the ultrasonic vibration on microstructure and performance of AZ31 magnesium alloy under tensile deformation. The results showed that the different reductions of the true stress appeared under various ultrasonic vibration conditions, and the maximum decreasing range was 4.76%. The maximum microhardness difference among the 3 nodes selected along the specimen was HV 10.9. The fracture modes, plasticity and microstructure of AZ31 magnesium alloy also were affected by amplitude and action time of the ultrasonic vibration. The softening effect and the hardening effect occurred simultaneously when the ultrasonic vibration was applied. When the ultrasonic amplitude was 4.6 μm with short action time, the plastic deformation was dominated by twins and the softening effect was dominant. However, the twinning could be inhibited and the hardening effect became dominant in the case of high ultrasonic energy. 展开更多

Traditional soil additives like Portland cement and lime are prone to cause the brittle fracture behavior of soil, and possibly, environmental impacts. This study explores the potential use of polyurethane organic polymer and sisal fiber in improving the mechanical performance of sand. The effects of polymer content, fiber content, and dry density on the unconfined compressive strength(UCS)and direct tensile strength(DTS)of the polymer-fiber-sand composite were evaluated. The results showed significant increase in UCS and DTS of the reinforced sand with the increase of polymer content, fiber content, and dry density. At high dry density condition,a single peaked stress−strain curve is often observed.Higher polymer content is beneficial to increasing the peak stress, while higher fiber content contributes more to the post-peak stress. The combined use of polymers and fibers in soil reinforcement effectively prevents the propagation and development of cracks under the stress.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)test was also performed to investigate the micro-structural changes and inter-particle relations. It was found through SEM images that the surface coating, bonding, and filling effects conferred by polymer matrix greatly enhance the interfacial interactions, and hence provide a cohesive environment where the strength of fibers could be readily mobilized. 展开更多

AA5059 is one of the high strength armor grade aluminium alloy that finds its applications in the military vehicles due to the higher resistance against the armor piercing (AP) threats. This study aimed at finding the best suitable process among the fusion welding processes such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) by evaluating the tensile properties of AA5059 aluminium alloy joints. The fracture path was identified by mapping the low hardness distribution profile (LHDP) across the weld cross section under tensile loading. Optical and scanning electron microscopies were used to characterize the microstructural features of the welded joints at various zones. It is evident from the results that GTAW joints showed superior tensile properties compared to GMAW joints and this is primarily owing to the presence of finer grains in the weld metal zone (WMZ) and narrow heat-affected zone (HAZ). The lower heat input associated with the GTAW process effectively reduced the size of the WMZ and HAZ compared to GMAW process. Lower heat input of GTAW process results in faster cooling rate which hinders the grain growth and reduces the evaporation of magnesium in weld metal compared to GMAW joints. The fracture surface of GTAW joint consists of more dimples than GMAW joints which is an indication that the GTAW joint possess improved ductility than GMAW joint. 展开更多

The selective laser melting(SLM)processed aluminum alloys have already aroused researchers’attention in aerospace, rail transport and petrochemical engineering due to the comprehensive advantages of low density, good corrosion resistance and high mechanical performance. In this paper,an Al-14.1Mg-0.47Si-0.31Sc-0.17Zr alloy was fabricated via SLM.The characteristics of single track at different process parameters, and the influence of hatch spacing on densification, microstructural features and tensile properties of block specimens were systematically studied. The hatch spacing has an influence on the overlap ratio of single track, and further affects the internal forming quality of printed specimen. At a laser power of 160 W and scanning speed of 400 mm/s,the densification of block specimen increased first and then decreased with the increase of hatch spacing. The nearly full dense specimen(98.7%)with a tensile strength of 452 MPa was fabricated at a hatch spacing of 80μm.Typical characteristics of dimple and cleavage on the tensile fracture of the AlMgSiScZr alloy showed the mixed fracture of ductility and brittleness. 展开更多

The influence of exfoliation corrosion on the tensile properties of a high strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy was investigated by ambient temperature tensile testing, optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). After exfoliation corrosion immersion, blisters and corrosion pits can be seen on the sheet surface, which lead to loss of materials and notches. A number of intergranular cracks are observed to initiate at the bottom of the corrosion-induced notches and propagate rapidly into the bulk materials during tensile. Consequently, exfoliation corrosion results in significant loss of strength and brittle fracture. EBSD results show that the crack propagation path is primarily along the grain boundaries with misorientation of-45°, and coincidence site lattice (CSL) boundaries are slightly more resistant to crack. 展开更多

The effect of microwave treatment on the tensile properties of treated sugar palm fibre with 6% NaOH reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane composites was investigated. Firstly, the sugar palm fibres were treated by 6% alkali solution. Then, microwave treatment was used to treat the alkali treated sugar palm fibres. Three types of temperatures(i.e. 70, 80 and 90℃) were applied in microwave treatment. The extruder and hot press machines were used to mixing the sugar palm fibres and polyurethane resin, and fabricate the composites. Tensile properties(i.e. tensile strength, tensile modulus and elongation at break) were studied by following the ASTM D-638 standard. The highest tensile strength was recorded 18.42 MPa with microwave temperature at 70℃ and 6% alkali pre-treatment. Therefore, the temperature 70℃ of microwave treatment may consider the best degree cent grate. 展开更多

Nested Newmark model(NNM) is a conceptual framework to assessing post-earthquake movements including dispersed shear movements. The original NNM omits that the tensile stresses would be encountered in slopes induced by earthquakes. The purpose of this study is to introduce the tensile strength cut-off and the relevant failure mechanism into NNM and conduct the limit analysis to determine the seismic displacement. Parametric studies are carried out to further investigate the influence of the tensile strength and input ground motions on permanent displacement. Neglecting the tensile strength can underestimate the permanent displacements of slopes. As the peak acceleration increases, the underestimation becomes more significant. With the reduction of tensile strength, much larger deformation occurs next to the slope crest. Although the present results are limited to an example, the method is of value in practice to predict the post-earthquake profile of slope. 展开更多

Similar friction welded joints of AA-7005 aluminum rods were fabricated using different combinations of process parameters such as friction pressure(1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 MPa) and friction time(10, 15 and 20 s). Interfacial microstructure and formation of intermetallic compounds at the joint interface were evaluated via scanning electron microscopy(SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectrum(EDS), and optical microscopy(OM). Microstructural observations reveal the formation of intermetallic phases during the welding process which cannot be extruded from the interface. Theses phases influence the tensile strength of the resultant joints. From the tensile characteristics viewpoint, the greatest tensile strength value of 365 MPa is obtained at 1.5 MPa and 15 s. Finally, the role of microstructural features on tensile strength of resultant joints is discussed. 展开更多

Indirect extrusion of Mg-10%Sn (mass fraction) alloys was performed at three different working temperatures. The effect of working temperature on the microstructure, texture and tensile properties of the extruded alloys was investigated by optical microscope (OM), scanning electronic microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a standard universal testing machine. Grain size, area fraction of second phase particles and texture of the alloys are found to be significantly influenced by working temperature. The grain size refinement is greatly dependent on processing conditions with the low working temperature being the most effective. While the high working temperature results in a coarser grain size and a stronger fiber texture and the reason for this phenomenon was examined in terms of second phase particle, grain type and dynamic recrystallization mechanism. Tested in the different conditions, the tensile strengths of the Mg-10Sn alloys extruded at the high working temperature are remarkably better than those of the other studied alloys. This significant improvement in tensile properties is mainly due to the particle strengthening and texture strengthening resulted from the more and finer primary dispersed particles and stronger texture, respectively. 展开更多

The modeling effects of constituents and dispersoids on the tensile ductility of aluminum alloy were studied. The results show that the tensile ductility decreases with the increase of the volume fraction and size of constituents. Thus, purification can improve the tensile ductility by decreasing the volume fraction of constituents(normally compositions of Fe and Si)and the first-class microcracks. The model also indicates that the tensile ductility decreases with the increase in the volume fraction of dispersoids.Decreasing the volume fraction of dispersoids along the grain boundaries by proper heat-treatment and improving the cohesion strength between dispersoids and matrix can also improve the tensile ductility by decreasing the volume fraction of the second-class microcracks. 展开更多

Ballistic impact induces complex stress states on fiber-based armor systems.During impact fibers undergo multiaxial loading which includes axial tension, axial compression, transverse compression, and transverse shear.Transverse co mpression induced by the projectile leads to permanent defo rmation and fibrillation of fibers resulting in degradation of material tensile strength.Previous work(Sockalingam et al.Textile Res.J 2018) has shown a reduction of 20% in the tensile strength of Dyneema~? SK76 single fibers subjectet to 77% nominal transverse compressive strains.Experimental investigation of quasistatic transverse compression on Dyneema~? SK-76 yarns, unconstrained in the lateral direction, indicate an average of 4% reduction in tensile strength of yarns compressed to 77% nominal strains. In this work we use finite element modeling techniques to understand the difference in residual tensile strength between single fibers and yarns observed in laterally unconstrained transverse compression experiments.Finite element study of the transverse compression response of single fibers and yarns indicate that local strains developed in fibers within the yarn are much lower than the local strains developed in single fibers subjected to a given nominal strain and may explain the less reduction in strength observed in yarns. 展开更多

The effects of tensile temperatures ranging from 100 K to 900 K on the phase transition of hexagonal close-packed(HCP)zirconium were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations, which were combined with experimental observation under high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results show that externally applied loading first induced the HCP to body-centered cubic(BCC)phase transition in the Pitsch-Schrader(PS)orientation relationship(OR).Then, the face-centered cubic(FCC)structure transformed from the BCC phase in the Bain path. However, the HCP-to-BCC transition was incomplete at 100 K and 300 K,resulting in a prismatic-type OR between the FCC and original HCP phase.Additionally,at the temperature ranging from 100 K to 600 K,the inverse BCC-to-HCP transition occurred locally following other variants of the PS OR,resulting in a basal-type relation between the newly generated HCP and FCC phases.A higher tensile temperature promoted the amount of FCC phase transforming into the BCC phase when the strain exceeded 45%.Besides,the crystal stretched at lower temperatures exhibits relatively higher strength but by the compromise of plasticity. This study reveals the deformation mechanisms in HCP-Zr at different temperatures, which may provide a better understanding of the deformation mechanism of zirconium alloys under different application environments. 展开更多
