Tensile tests of AZ31 magnesium alloy were carried out. The stress–strain relationship, fracture modes of tensile specimens, microstructure and microhardness under different vibration conditions were analyzed, in order to study the effects of the ultrasonic vibration on microstructure and performance of AZ31 magnesium alloy under tensile deformation. The results showed that the different reductions of the true stress appeared under various ultrasonic vibration conditions, and the maximum decreasing range was 4.76%. The fracture modes, plasticity and microstructure of AZ31 magnesium alloy also were affected by amplitude and action time of the ultrasonic vibration. The softening effect and the hardening effect occurred simultaneously when the ultrasonic vibration was applied. This study aimed at finding the best suitable process among the fusion welding processes such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) by evaluating the tensile properties of AA5059 aluminium alloy joints. The fracture path was identified by mapping the low hardness distribution profile (LHDP) across the weld cross section under tensile loading. Optical and scanning electron microscopies were used to characterize the microstructural features of the welded joints at various zones. It is evident from the results that GTAW joints showed superior tensile properties compared to GMAW joints and this is primarily owing to the presence of finer grains in the weld metal zone (WMZ) and narrow heat-affected zone (HAZ). The lower heat input associated with the GTAW process effectively reduced the size of the WMZ and HAZ compared to GMAW process. Lower heat input of GTAW process results in faster cooling rate which hinders the grain growth and reduces the evaporation of magnesium in weld metal compared to GMAW joints. The fracture surface of GTAW joint consists of more dimples than GMAW joints which is an indication that the GTAW joint possess improved ductility than GMAW joint.展开更多

After exfoliation corrosion immersion, blisters and corrosion pits can be seen on the sheet surface, which lead to loss of materials and notches. A number of intergranular cracks are observed to initiate at the bottom of the corrosion-induced notches and propagate rapidly into the bulk materials during tensile. Consequently, exfoliation corrosion results in significant loss of strength and brittle fracture. EBSD results show that the crack propagation path is primarily along the grain boundaries with misorientation of-45°, and coincidence site lattice (CSL) boundaries are slightly more resistant to crack.展开更多

Firstly, the sugar palm fibres were treated by 6% alkali solution. Then, microwave treatment was used to treat the alkali treated sugar palm fibres. Three types of temperatures(i.e. 70, 80 and 90℃) were applied in microwave treatment. The extruder and hot press machines were used to mixing the sugar palm fibres and polyurethane resin, and fabricate the composites. Tensile properties(i.e. tensile strength, tensile modulus and elongation at break) were studied by following the ASTM D-638 standard. The highest tensile strength was recorded 18.42 MPa with microwave temperature at 70℃ and 6% alkali pre-treatment. Therefore, the temperature 70℃ of microwave treatment may consider the best degree cent grate.展开更多

The original NNM omits that the tensile stresses would be encountered in slopes induced by earthquakes. The purpose of this study is to introduce the tensile strength cut-off and the relevant failure mechanism into NNM and conduct the limit analysis to determine the seismic displacement. Parametric studies are carried out to further investigate the influence of the tensile strength and input ground motions on permanent displacement. Neglecting the tensile strength can underestimate the permanent displacements of slopes. As the peak acceleration increases, the underestimation becomes more significant. With the reduction of tensile strength, much larger deformation occurs next to the slope crest. Although the present results are limited to an example, the method is of value in practice to predict the post-earthquake profile of slope.展开更多

Interfacial microstructure and formation of intermetallic compounds at the joint interface were evaluated via scanning electron microscopy(SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectrum(EDS), and optical microscopy(OM). Microstructural observations reveal the formation of intermetallic phases during the welding process which cannot be extruded from the interface. Theses phases influence the tensile strength of the resultant joints. From the tensile characteristics viewpoint, the greatest tensile strength value of 365 MPa is obtained at 1.5 MPa and 15 s. Finally, the role of microstructural features on tensile strength of resultant joints is discussed.展开更多

The precise bond slip values have been gained by using the laser displacement sensor with high resolution, including the complete bond-slip curves. How the main anchorage factors such as concrete strength, bar diameter (8, I0, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36 mm) the concrete covered, embedded length and transverse reinforcement influencing the bond anchorage properties was studied under tensile condition. The process of the tensile force-slip failure for Australian 500N reinforcing steel can be divided into five stages: elastic stage, local slip stage, slip in ascent stage, slip in descent stage and remnant stage. The effect of working temperature on the microstructure, texture and tensile properties of the extruded alloys was investigated by optical microscope (OM), scanning electronic microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a standard universal testing machine. Grain size, area fraction of second phase particles and texture of the alloys are found to be significantly influenced by working temperature. The grain size refinement is greatly dependent on processing conditions with the low working temperature being the most effective. While the high working temperature results in a coarser grain size and a stronger fiber texture and the reason for this phenomenon was examined in terms of second phase particle, grain type and dynamic recrystallization mechanism. Tested in the different conditions, the tensile strengths of the Mg-10Sn alloys extruded at the high working temperature are remarkably better than those of the other studied alloys. This significant improvement in tensile properties is mainly due to the particle strengthening and texture strengthening resulted from the more and finer primary dispersed particles and stronger texture, respectively.展开更多

SK76 single fibers subjectet to 77% nominal transverse compressive strains.Experimental investigation of quasistatic transverse compression on Dyneema~? SK-76 yarns, unconstrained in the lateral direction, indicate an average of 4% reduction in tensile strength of yarns compressed to 77% nominal strains. In this work we use finite element modeling techniques to understand the difference in residual tensile strength between single fibers and yarns observed in laterally unconstrained transverse compression experiments.Finite element study of the transverse compression response of single fibers and yarns indicate that local strains developed in fibers within the yarn are much lower than the local strains developed in single fibers subjected to a given nominal strain and may explain the less reduction in strength observed in yarns.展开更多

文摘Tensile failure(spalling or slabbing)often occurs on the sidewall of deep tunnel, which is closely related to the coupled stress state of deep rock mass under high pre-static load and dynamic disturbance. To reveal the mechanism of rock tensile failure caused by this coupled stress mode, the Brazilian disc tests were carried on red sandstone under high pre-static load induced by dynamic disturbance.Based on the pure static tensile fracture load of red sandstone specimen, two static load levels(80%and 90%of the pure static tensile fracture load)were selected as the initial high pre-static loading state, and then the dynamic disturbance load was applied until the rock specimen was destroyed. The dynamic disturbance loading mode adopted a sinusoidal wave(sine-wave)load,and the loading wave amplitude was 20%and 10%of the pure static tensile fracture load, respectively. The dynamic disturbance frequencies were set to 1,10,20,30,40,and 50 Hz.The results show that the tensile failure strength and peak displacement of red sandstone specimens under coupled load actions are lower than those under pure static tensile load, and both parameters decrease significantly with the increase of dynamic disturbance frequency. With the increase of dynamic disturbance frequency, the decrease range of tensile strength of red sandstone increased from 3.3%to 9.4%when the pre-static load level is 80%.While when the pre-static load level is 90%,the decrease range will increase from 7.4%to 11.6%.This weakening effect of tensile strength shows that the deep surrounding rock is more likely to fail under the coupled load actions of pre-static load and dynamic disturbance. In this tensile failure mechanism of the deep surrounding rock, the stress environment of deep sidewall rock determines that the failure mode of rock is a tensile failure, the pre-static load level dominates the tensile failure strength of surrounding rock, and dynamic disturbance promotes the strength-weakening effect and affects the weakening range.

文摘The selective laser melting(SLM)processed aluminum alloys have already aroused researchers’attention in aerospace, rail transport and petrochemical engineering due to the comprehensive advantages of low density, good corrosion resistance and high mechanical performance. In this paper,an Al-14.1Mg-0.47Si-0.31Sc-0.17Zr alloy was fabricated via SLM.The characteristics of single track at different process parameters, and the influence of hatch spacing on densification, microstructural features and tensile properties of block specimens were systematically studied. The hatch spacing has an influence on the overlap ratio of single track, and further affects the internal forming quality of printed specimen. At a laser power of 160 W and scanning speed of 400 mm/s,the densification of block specimen increased first and then decreased with the increase of hatch spacing. The nearly full dense specimen(98.7%)with a tensile strength of 452 MPa was fabricated at a hatch spacing of 80μm.Typical characteristics of dimple and cleavage on the tensile fracture of the AlMgSiScZr alloy showed the mixed fracture of ductility and brittleness.

文摘The mechanical behavior of EPS(Expanded polystyrene) with three densities at room temperature and under tension loading was studied. The results show that EPS material is characterized by brittle behavior in the tension tests, and tensile properties of EPS increase with the increase of density.Volume fraction has no a significant effect on the modulus of these foams. The tensile creep strain increases with stress for EPS with same density, indicating that the creep behavior is of the stress dependency. And the creep behavior of EPS exhibits density dependency, which the creep strain decreases with densities for a fixed stress value. Moreover the creep behavior under the constant tension load is well in coincidence with the three-parameter solid model.

文摘The influence of exfoliation corrosion on the tensile properties of a high strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy was investigated by ambient temperature tensile testing, optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). EBSD results show that the crack propagation path is primarily along the grain boundaries with misorientation of-45°, and coincidence site lattice (CSL) boundaries are slightly more resistant to crack.
文摘The effect of microwave treatment on the tensile properties of treated sugar palm fibre with 6% NaOH reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane composites was investigated. Therefore, the temperature 70℃ of microwave treatment may consider the best degree cent grate.

文摘Nested Newmark model(NNM) is a conceptual framework to assessing post-earthquake movements including dispersed shear movements. Although the present results are limited to an example, the method is of value in practice to predict the post-earthquake profile of slope.
文摘Similar friction welded joints of AA-7005 aluminum rods were fabricated using different combinations of process parameters such as friction pressure(1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 MPa) and friction time(10, 15 and 20 s). Finally, the role of microstructural features on tensile strength of resultant joints is discussed.

文摘In order to investigate the tensile bond anchorage properties of Australian 500N steel bars in concrete, 111 pullout tests were conducted. The formula for calculating the tensile bond strength of Australian 500N reinforcing bar in concrete was proposed according to the test results, including the consistent model for tensile bond-slip relationship.

文摘Indirect extrusion of Mg-10%Sn (mass fraction) alloys was performed at three different working temperatures. This significant improvement in tensile properties is mainly due to the particle strengthening and texture strengthening resulted from the more and finer primary dispersed particles and stronger texture, respectively.

文摘The modeling effects of constituents and dispersoids on the tensile ductility of aluminum alloy were studied. The results show that the tensile ductility decreases with the increase of the volume fraction and size of constituents. Thus, purification can improve the tensile ductility by decreasing the volume fraction of constituents(normally compositions of Fe and Si)and the first-class microcracks. The model also indicates that the tensile ductility decreases with the increase in the volume fraction of dispersoids.Decreasing the volume fraction of dispersoids along the grain boundaries by proper heat-treatment and improving the cohesion strength between dispersoids and matrix can also improve the tensile ductility by decreasing the volume fraction of the second-class microcracks.

文摘Ballistic impact induces complex stress states on fiber-based armor systems.During impact fibers undergo multiaxial loading which includes axial tension, axial compression, transverse compression, and transverse shear.Transverse co mpression induced by the projectile leads to permanent defo rmation and fibrillation of fibers resulting in degradation of material tensile strength.Previous work(Sockalingam et al.Textile Res.J 2018) has shown a reduction of 20% in the tensile strength of Dyneema~? SK76 single fibers subjectet to 77% nominal transverse compressive strains.Experimental investigation of quasistatic transverse compression on Dyneema~? SK-76 yarns, unconstrained in the lateral direction, indicate an average of 4% reduction in tensile strength of yarns compressed to 77% nominal strains. In this work we use finite element modeling techniques to understand the difference in residual tensile strength between single fibers and yarns observed in laterally unconstrained transverse compression experiments.Finite element study of the transverse compression response of single fibers and yarns indicate that local strains developed in fibers within the yarn are much lower than the local strains developed in single fibers subjected to a given nominal strain and may explain the less reduction in strength observed in yarns.

文摘The effects of tensile temperatures ranging from 100 K to 900 K on the phase transition of hexagonal close-packed(HCP)zirconium were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations, which were combined with experimental observation under high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results show that externally applied loading first induced the HCP to body-centered cubic(BCC)phase transition in the Pitsch-Schrader(PS)orientation relationship(OR).Then, the face-centered cubic(FCC)structure transformed from the BCC phase in the Bain path. However, the HCP-to-BCC transition was incomplete at 100 K and 300 K,resulting in a prismatic-type OR between the FCC and original HCP phase.Additionally,at the temperature ranging from 100 K to 600 K,the inverse BCC-to-HCP transition occurred locally following other variants of the PS OR,resulting in a basal-type relation between the newly generated HCP and FCC phases.A higher tensile temperature promoted the amount of FCC phase transforming into the BCC phase when the strain exceeded 45%.Besides,the crystal stretched at lower temperatures exhibits relatively higher strength but by the compromise of plasticity. This study reveals the deformation mechanisms in HCP-Zr at different temperatures, which may provide a better understanding of the deformation mechanism of zirconium alloys under different application environments.
