In the field of second language acquisition(SLA),weight has been increasingly attached to the role that a problem-pos ing model of education plays in English as second/foreign language(ES/FL)teaching and learning.By exploring various concepts of the problem-posing approach,also known as critical pedagogy,and its implications for English language teaching(ELT)in the Chinese postsecondary EFL context,the paper makes a tentative attempt to acknowledge the future directions of implementing critical pedagogy in the EFL context.Therefore,the paper is inspired by the ever-increasing popularity of the critical pedagogical approach in the ESL context.The application of critical orientation in language education derives from critical theories of the Frankfurt School,which centers on Marxist societal beliefs of struggling against social inequalities.With the concept of critical pedagogy drawing increasing attention from language educators and teachers alike in English-speaking countries;non-native English teachers who teach in the EFL context has also begun to focus their attention on the educational philosophy as a means to help transform traditional oppressed status of the Chinese EFL learners.From this perspective,this paper,by investigating the multi-dimensional implied meanings of implementing critical pedagogy in the EFL context,unraveling how it works as a way of"doing"in second language(L2)teaching and learning,identifying the probable contexts of critical pedagogy and the contesta tions surrounding critical pedagogy,aims to address the significance of implementing critical pedagogy as an effective way of re forming the ailing English education condition in China. 展开更多

This review involved 234 theoretical research papers chosen from 13783 theses of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages in China's Mainland during the period 2009-2018.Theoretical research mainly includes two parts,theoretical analysis and theoretical application.The theoretical analysis and summary did not touch the core of the basic theory,and the macro height and depth were insufficient.Theoretical application rarely applied theories of this subject,mostly borrowed theories of other subjects to conduct experiments.There are more questions.The problems lead to doubt about the reliability of the thesis conclusion.For this reason,this review concludes with recommendations for Chinese researchers. 展开更多

A Study of Chinese College Students' Face Needs in EFL Class

Based on Brown &Levinson's Face Threatening Acts and Geert Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions,this study is an analysis of Chinese college students' face needs in EFL class.In this study,the subjects are 116 freshmen,non-English majors.Selecting totally 60 students from them and dividing them into two groups according to their scores of College English Entrance Examination.The collected data from questionnaire are analyzed by statistical software SPSS16.0 version.The major findings from the analysis include the following:1) high-scored students and low-scored students have similar positive face needs;2) Weight of imposition,group tendency and uncertainty avoidance are used to exam students' negative face needs.According to the data in SPSS16.0,there is a difference between the two groups in terms of the weight of imposition.But the Independent-Samples T test of Sum of Questionnaire indicates that there is no distinct difference in the negative face needs between the two groups. 展开更多

Language and gender are always the focus in the field of foreign language teaching since modern times.In the 1970s,after the occurrence of women status and language theory model proposed by Lakoff,the research on the field of language gender difference begin to develop prosperously and present in a multilevel and interdisciplinary way.Since then,the research on the field of gender and language gradually expand into the teaching area especially in foreign language teaching.And gender has also become an significant variable in the field.This paper aims to find out the reason why gender inequality occurs in foreign language teaching.To understand the factors causing this tendency,a questionnaire is also designed to find out teachers'perception of the relevant gender issues in the foreign language classroom and of their own gender-differentiated treatment of boys and girls.The following three questions are to be explored in the research.(1)In what way do teachers give boys or girls more attention,more opportunities to participate in the English class?(2)What role do teachers'gender-specific practice play in students'language learning?(3)Girls have better command of English because they are better bestowed than boys or because they are expected to.It is believed that teachers are reliable agent in foreign language teaching,if equipped with proper gender equity training.Attempts should be made by some parties such as Education Department,normal universities,to tackle this problem as to offer both boys and girls an optimal foreign language learning experience. 展开更多
