Dimples with the diameter of 150μm and the depth of 30-35μm distributed circumferentially on the disc surface.The alloying element Cr was sputtered to the laser texturing steel surface by double glow plasma technique.A deep diffusion layer with a thickness of 30μm and a high hardness of HV900 was formed in this alloy.Tribological experiments of three types of samples(smooth,texturing and texturing+alloying) were conducted with a ring-on-disc tribometer to simulate the face seal.It is found that,in comparison with smooth steel surfaces,the laser texturing samples significantly reduce the friction coefficient.Moreover,the lower wear rate of the sample treated with the two surface techniques is observed.展开更多
In the present study,the effect of reduction of cutting fluid consumption on the surface quality and tool wear was studied.Mathematical models were developed to predict the surface roughness using response surface met...In the present study,the effect of reduction of cutting fluid consumption on the surface quality and tool wear was studied.Mathematical models were developed to predict the surface roughness using response surface methodology(RSM).Analysis of variance(ANOVA)was used to investigate the significance of the developed regression models.The results showed that the coefficient of determination values(R^2)for the developed models was 97.46%for dry,89.32%for flood mode(FM),and 99.44%for MQL,showing the high accuracy of fitted models.Also,under the minimum quantity lubrication(MQL)condition,the surface roughness improved by 23%−44%and 19%−41%compared with dry and FM,respectively,and the SEM images of machined surface proved the statement.The prepared SEM images of tool rake face also showed a considerable decrease in adhesion wear.Built-up edge and built-up layer were the two main products of the adhesion wear,and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX)analysis of specific points on the tool faces helped to discover the chemical compositions of adhered materials.By changing dry and FM to MQL mode,dominant mechanism of tool wear in machining aluminum alloy was significantly decreased.Breakage wear that led to early failure of cutting edge was also controlled by MQL technique.展开更多

The microstructure of the fabricated surface nanocomposites is examined using optical microscopy(OM) and scanning electron microscope(SEM) for distribution of TiB_2 nano reinforcement particles, thickness of nano composite layer formed on the Aluminum alloy substrate and fracture features. The depth of surface nano composite layer is measured as 3683.82 m m along the cross section of stir zone of nano composite perpendicular to FSP. It was observed that increase in volume percentage of TiB_2 particles, the microhardness is increased up to132 Hv and it is greater than as-received Al alloy's microhardness(104 Hv). It is also observed that at 4volume percentage higher tensile properties exhibited as compared with the 2 and 8 vol. %. It is found that high wear resistance exhibited at 4 volume percentage as-compared with the 2 and 8 vol. %. The observed wear and mechanical properties are interrelated with microstructure, fractography and worn morphology.展开更多
A pulsed,picosecond Nd:YAG laser with a wavelength of 532 nm is used to texture the surface of grade 5 titanium alloy(Ti–6Al–4V)for minimizing its wear rate.The wear properties of the base samples and laser surface ...A pulsed,picosecond Nd:YAG laser with a wavelength of 532 nm is used to texture the surface of grade 5 titanium alloy(Ti–6Al–4V)for minimizing its wear rate.The wear properties of the base samples and laser surface textured samples are analyzed by conducting wear tests under a sliding condition using pin-on-disk equipment.The wear tests are conducted based on the Box–Benhken design,and the interaction of the process parameters is analyzed using response surface methodology.The wear analysis is conducted by varying the load,rotating speed of the disc,and track diameter at room temperature with a sliding distance of 1500 m.The results demonstrate that the laser textured surfaces exhibited a lower coefficient of friction and good anti-wear properties as compared with the non-textured surfaces.A regression model is developed for the wear analysis of titanium alloy using the analysis of variance technique.It is also observed from the analysis that the applied load and sliding distance are the parameters that have the greatest effect on the wear behavior followed by the wear track diameter.The optimum operating conditions have been suggested based on the results obtained from the numerical optimization approach.展开更多

X-ray diffractometry(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX) attached to SEM were used to characterize surface structure and the Ca-P coatings. Effects of the above surface treatments on the surface morphology, apatite forming ability were systematically investigated. Results indicate that all the above surface treatments increase the apatite forming ability of TiNi alloys in varying degrees when soaked in simulated body fluid(SBF). More apatite coatings formed on TiNi samples sintered at 1050℃ and 1100℃ due to their high porosity and pure TiNi phase that is beneficial to heterogeneous nucleation. Furthermore, more uniform apatite was fabricated on the sample sintered from the mixture of Ni and Ti powders.展开更多

Friction stir welding(FSW) process, an emerging solid state joining process, is suitable for joining this alloy compared to fusion welding processes. This work presents the formulation of a mathematical model with process parameters and tool geometry to predict the responses of friction stir welds of AA 2014-T6 aluminum alloy, viz yield strength, tensile strength and ductility. The most influential process parameters considered are spindle speed, welding speed, tilt angle and tool pin profile. A four-factor, five-level central composite design was used and a response surface methodology(RSM) was employed to develop the regression models to predict the responses.The mechanical properties, such as yield strength(YS), ultimate tensile strength(UTS) and percentage elongation(%El), are considered as responses. Method of analysis of variance was used to determine the important process parameters that affect the responses. Validation trials were carried out to validate these results. These results indicate that the friction stir welds of AA 2014-T6 aluminum alloy welded with hexagonal tool pin profile have the highest tensile strength and elongation, whereas the joints fabricated with conical tool pin profile have the lowest tensile strength and elongation.展开更多
The 4-lobe aluminum alloy helical surface rotors are widely applied in industry,such as superchargers.Generally,the conventional manufacturing processes of aluminum alloy helical surface are time consuming and costly....The 4-lobe aluminum alloy helical surface rotors are widely applied in industry,such as superchargers.Generally,the conventional manufacturing processes of aluminum alloy helical surface are time consuming and costly.To make the manufacturing processes more flexible and economical,the forward hot extrusion process is proposed to form the 4-lobe aluminum alloy helical surface rotors.In this work,we implement both simulations and experiments to the forming process of the helical surface,of which the material is 6063 aluminum alloy.The forward hot extrusion process is simulated with finite element method in DEFORM-3D.Based on the simulation method,the influences of different extrusion parameters,such as extrusion temperature,extrusion speed and extrusion ratio,on the extrusion process are studied.According to the numerical simulation results,the optimal case is chosen to carry out the experiment.Furthermore,the experimental results show that the surface is smooth;the toothed fill is full;the twist angle in the length direction is evenly distributed;the value of twist angle is roughly in line with the design angle,which is mainly due to the modified die structure,having a positive and significant effect on the increment of twist angle.Therefore,the twist angle has an increase of about 76%,which verifies the modified die structure.展开更多

In order to reduce the cost of the austenitic stainless steels(ASSs),the expensive austenite former(nickel) is often substituted by manganese.However,manganese is generally seen to have a detrimental effect on the cor...In order to reduce the cost of the austenitic stainless steels(ASSs),the expensive austenite former(nickel) is often substituted by manganese.However,manganese is generally seen to have a detrimental effect on the corrosion resistance.In the present study,the feasibility of laser surface modification of a lean-alloyed ASS(FeCrMn) for enhancing pitting corrosion resistance was investigated.Laser surface modification of FeCrMn was successfully achieved by a 2.3 kW high power diode laser(HPDL).Cyclic polarization tests for FeCrMn after laser surface modification in 3.5% NaCl solution at 25 ℃ were performed by using a potentiostat.The pitting resistance of the laser-modified specimens was found to be significantly improved as reflected by the noble shift in pitting potential.This could be attributed to redistribution of manganese sulphide leading to a more homogenous and refined microstructure.Pitting corrosion resistance of the laser-treated FeCrMn followed by subsequent citric acid passivation was found to be further improved as reflected by the noble shift in pitting potential to 0.18 V.展开更多
Good castability and high strength properties of Ale Si alloys are useful in defence applications like torpedoes,manufacture of Missile bodies,and parts of automobile such as engine cylinders and pistons.Poor wear res...Good castability and high strength properties of Ale Si alloys are useful in defence applications like torpedoes,manufacture of Missile bodies,and parts of automobile such as engine cylinders and pistons.Poor wear resistance of the alloys is major limitation for their use.Friction stir processing(FSP) is a recognized surfacing technique as it overcomes the problems of fusion route surface modification methods.Keeping in view of the requirement of improving wear resistance of cast aluminiumesilicon alloy,friction stir processing was attempted for surface modification with boron carbide(B4C) and molybdenum disulfide(Mo S2) powders.Metallography,micro compositional analysis,hardness and pin-on-disc wear testing were used for characterizing the surface composite coating.Microscopic study revealed breaking of coarse silicon needles and uniformly distributed carbides in the A356 alloy matrix after FSP.Improvement and uniformity in hardness was obtained in surface composite layer.Higher wear resistance was achieved in friction stir processed coating with carbide powders.Addition of solid lubricant Mo S2 powder was found to improve wear resistance of the base metal significantly.展开更多
This study investigated the effect of pre-friction surfacing heat treatment of consumable rods and heat input during friction surfacing on the microstructure,mechanical properties,and wear resistance of hypereutectic ...This study investigated the effect of pre-friction surfacing heat treatment of consumable rods and heat input during friction surfacing on the microstructure,mechanical properties,and wear resistance of hypereutectic Al-Si alloy deposited on a commercially pure aluminum substrate.The results show that regardless of the consumable rod’s heat treatment conditions,the coating’s efficiency has increased with the increase in heat input,so the coating efficiency increases by 20%and 30%in the solid solution-treated rod and the artificially aged rod,respectively.By increasing the heat input,the average grain size in the coating fabricated by solid solution-treated rod and artificially aged rod increased from 0.1 to 0.9μm and from 0.2 to 1.3μm,respectively.At constant heat input,the average hardness and wear resistance of the coating created in the solid solution-treated rod are lower than those of the artificially aged rod.By decreasing heat input,the wear loss in the coating fabricated by solid solution-treated rod and artificially aged rod decreased by 10%and 20%,respectively,reaching 0.1 and 0.03μg/m.展开更多

文摘In order to reduce the cost of the austenitic stainless steels(ASSs),the expensive austenite former(nickel) is often substituted by manganese.However,manganese is generally seen to have a detrimental effect on the corrosion resistance.In the present study,the feasibility of laser surface modification of a lean-alloyed ASS(FeCrMn) for enhancing pitting corrosion resistance was investigated.Laser surface modification of FeCrMn was successfully achieved by a 2.3 kW high power diode laser(HPDL).Cyclic polarization tests for FeCrMn after laser surface modification in 3.5% NaCl solution at 25 ℃ were performed by using a potentiostat.The pitting resistance of the laser-modified specimens was found to be significantly improved as reflected by the noble shift in pitting potential.This could be attributed to redistribution of manganese sulphide leading to a more homogenous and refined microstructure.Pitting corrosion resistance of the laser-treated FeCrMn followed by subsequent citric acid passivation was found to be further improved as reflected by the noble shift in pitting potential to 0.18 V.

文摘Good castability and high strength properties of Ale Si alloys are useful in defence applications like torpedoes,manufacture of Missile bodies,and parts of automobile such as engine cylinders and pistons.Poor wear resistance of the alloys is major limitation for their use.Friction stir processing(FSP) is a recognized surfacing technique as it overcomes the problems of fusion route surface modification methods.Keeping in view of the requirement of improving wear resistance of cast aluminiumesilicon alloy,friction stir processing was attempted for surface modification with boron carbide(B4C) and molybdenum disulfide(Mo S2) powders.Metallography,micro compositional analysis,hardness and pin-on-disc wear testing were used for characterizing the surface composite coating.Microscopic study revealed breaking of coarse silicon needles and uniformly distributed carbides in the A356 alloy matrix after FSP.Improvement and uniformity in hardness was obtained in surface composite layer.Higher wear resistance was achieved in friction stir processed coating with carbide powders.Addition of solid lubricant Mo S2 powder was found to improve wear resistance of the base metal significantly.
文摘This study investigated the effect of pre-friction surfacing heat treatment of consumable rods and heat input during friction surfacing on the microstructure,mechanical properties,and wear resistance of hypereutectic Al-Si alloy deposited on a commercially pure aluminum substrate.The results show that regardless of the consumable rod’s heat treatment conditions,the coating’s efficiency has increased with the increase in heat input,so the coating efficiency increases by 20%and 30%in the solid solution-treated rod and the artificially aged rod,respectively.By increasing the heat input,the average grain size in the coating fabricated by solid solution-treated rod and artificially aged rod increased from 0.1 to 0.9μm and from 0.2 to 1.3μm,respectively.At constant heat input,the average hardness and wear resistance of the coating created in the solid solution-treated rod are lower than those of the artificially aged rod.By decreasing heat input,the wear loss in the coating fabricated by solid solution-treated rod and artificially aged rod decreased by 10%and 20%,respectively,reaching 0.1 and 0.03μg/m.
