This corpus-based discourse analytical study,by comparing the use of semantic prosodies in the reports from China Daily and the Washington Post relating the Belt and Road Initiative, interprets the news attitudes presented by the two media toward it. The analysis of the news discourse will be carried out firstly with Antconc, a corpus analysis software which enables us to observe the most frequent co-occurrences of the phrases the Belt and Road, One Belt and One Road, New Silk Road and the initiative; and then COCA(Corpus of Contemporary American English) is involved to analyze the semantic prosodies of these co-occurrences, on this basis the semantic prosodies of the above phrases are revealed. The analysis of the semantic prosodies of the above four phrases in the two corpora shows that China Daily hold a supportive attitude toward the Initiative, while the Washington Post hold a complex one.展开更多

With the rise of corpus linguistics, a corpus-oriented study can be used for the learning of synonyms because cor-pus contains a majority of natural, authentic language materials. This article attempts to analyze the different distribution of a pair of English synonyms"situation"and"condition"from different registers based on British National Corpus(BNC). And then the fur-ther comparison between two synonyms is made from the perspective of colligation, semantic prosody. Finally, it concludes that cor-pus is of great help to English vocabulary teaching, therefore teachers are supposed to introduce corpus retrieval appropriately to help students acquire the word knowledge.展开更多
This paper takes Wuhan’s traffic signs as the research object,and collects the Chinese and English traffic signs in large quantities to build a small corpus.According to the text type theory proposed by German functi...This paper takes Wuhan’s traffic signs as the research object,and collects the Chinese and English traffic signs in large quantities to build a small corpus.According to the text type theory proposed by German functionalist school Katarina Rice,in this article the traffic signs are classified into three categories:information type text identifier,expression type text identifier and opera⁃tion type text identifier according to six functions including indication,prompt,restriction,compulsory,persuasion and publicity.It attempts to reveal the characteristics of Chinese signs and English translations of different text types,and to explore the translation and semantic rhyme of the word"forbidden"in the English translation of high-frequency vocabulary in traffic signs.It aims to pro⁃vide reference for the English translation of traffic signs,create a good language environment,shape a good city image,and increase the degree of China's internationalization.展开更多
