Underwater gliders are recent innovative types of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) used in ocean exploration and observation. They adjust their buoyancy to dive and to return to the ocean surface. During the change of altitude, they use the hydrodynamic forces developed by their wings to move forward. Their flights are controlled by changing the position of their centers of gravity and their buoyancy to adjust their trim and heel angles. For better flight control, the understanding of the hydrodynamic behavior and the flight mechanics of the underwater glider is necessary. A 6-DOF motion simulator is coupled with an unsteady potential flow model for this purpose. In some specific cases, the numerical study demonstrates that an inappropriate stabilizer dimension can cause counter-steering behavior. The simulator can be used to improve the automatic flight control. It can also be used for the hydrodynamic design optimization of the devices. 展开更多

Compressible (full) potential flow is expressed as an equivalent first-order system of conservation laws for density ρ and velocity v. Energy E is shown to be the only nontrivial entropy for that system in multiple space dimensions, and it is strictly convex in ρ, v if and only if |v| 〈 c. For motivation some simple variations on the relative entropy theme of Dafer- mos/DiPerna are given, for example that smooth regions of weak entropy solutions shrink at finite speed, and that smooth solutions force solutions of singular entropy-compatible per- turbations to converge to them. We conjecture that entropy weak solutions of compressible potential flow are unique, in contrast to the known counterexamples for the Euler equations. 展开更多

Within the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model, we investigate the nuclear collective flows produced in semi-central 197 Au+197 Au collisions at intermediate energies. The neutron proton differential flows and difference of neutron proton collective flows are sensitive to the momentum-dependent symmetry potential. This sensitivity is less affected by both the isoscalar part of nuclear equation of state and in-medium nucleon- nucleon cross sections. Moreover, this sensitivity becomes pronounced with increasing the rapidity cut. 展开更多

To deal with the effect of compressible fluids on the supercavitating flow over the subsonic disk cavitator of a projectile, a finite volume method is formulated based on the ideal compressible potential theory. By using the continuity equation and Tait state equation as well as Riabouchinsky closure model, an“inverse problem”solution is presented for the supercavitating flow. According to the impenetrable condition on the surface of supercavity, a new iterative method for the supercavity shape is designed to deal with the effect of compressibility on the supercavity shape, pressure drag coefficient and density field. By this method, the very low cavitation number can be computed. The calculated results agree well with the experimental data and empirical formula. At the subsonic condition, the fluid compressibility will make supercavity length and radius increase. The supercavity expands, but remains spheroid. The effect on the first 1/3 part of supercavity is not obvious. The drag coefficient of projectile increases as the cavitation number or Mach number increases. With Mach number increasing, the compressibility is more and more significant. The compressibility must be considered as far as the accurate calculation of supercavitating flow is concerned. 展开更多

Pseudo three-dimension (P3D) hydraulic fracturing models often overpredict the fracture height for a poorly contained fracture. To solve this problem, a new method is presented in shaping the P3D fracture geometry on the basis of the fundamental theory and the original 1D fluid flow is replaced with a more representatively radial flow. The distribution of the fluid in the modified fluid field is analyzed and a sound explanation to the problem is given. Due to the consideration of the fluid flow in the vertical direction, the modified model can predict the fracture height much better. To validate the rationality of the radial fluid flow assumption, the distribution of the fluid in the modified fluid field is simulated with the plane potential flow by using finite element method. And the results agree effectively with those from the assumption. Through comparing with the full 3D model, the results show that this new P3D model can be used to aid the fracturing design and predict the fracture height under poorly contained situation. 展开更多

The nanomaterials used in this study were multiwall carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) and silver nanopowders. These nanomaterials were dispersed and densely packed on a substrate and immersed in flowing vapors generated from solution such as water, ethanol and KCI. The potentials generated from these samples were measured by a voltmeter. Experimental results showed that the electric potentials were produced at the surface of the MWCNT samlpes, and strongly dependent on the pretreatment of MWCNT and properties of the flowing vapors. The mechanism of vapor-flow induced potentials may be ascribed to ions in the flowing vapors. This property of MWCNTs can advantage their application to nanoscale sensors, detectors and power cells. 展开更多

This paper develops a numerical code for modelling liquid sloshing. The coupled boundary element-finite element method was used to solve the Laplace equation for inviscid fluid and nonlinear free surface boundary conditions.Using Nakayama and Washizu’s results, the code performance was validated.Using the developed numerical mode,we proposed artificial neural network(ANN)and genetic algorithm(GA)methods for evaluating sloshing loads and comparing them.To compare the efficiency of the suggested methods, the maximum free surface displacement and the maximum horizontal force exerted on a rectangular tank’s perimeter are examined. It can be seen from the results that both ANNs and GAs can accurately predict η_(max) and F_(max). 展开更多

A three-dimensional method of calculating wave loads of turret moored FPSO (Flo ating Production Storage and Offloading) tankers is presented. The linearized restoring forces acting on the ship hull by the mooring system are calculated according to the catenary theory, which are expressed as the function of linear stiffness coefficients and the displacements of the upper ends of mooring chains. The hydrodynamic coefficients of the ship are calculated by the three-dimensional potential flow theory of the linear hydrodynamic problem for ships with a low forward speed. The equations of ship motions are established with the effect of the restoring forces from the mooring system included as linear stiffness coefficients. The equations of motions are solved in frequency domain, and the responses of wave-induced motions and loads on the ship can be obtained. A computer pro gram based on this method has been developed, and some calculation examples are illustrated. Analysis results show that the method can give satisfying prediction of wave loads. 展开更多

The flow is assumed to be potential, and a boundary integral method is used to solve the Laplace equation for the velocity potential to investigate the shape and the position of the bubble. A 3D code to study the bubble dynamics is developed, and the calculation results agree well with the experimental data. Numerical analyses are carried out for the interaction between multiple bubbles near the free surface including in-phase and out-of-phase bubbles. The calculation result shows that the bubble period increases with the decrease of the distance between bubble centres because of the depression effect between multiple bubbles. The depression has no relationship with the free surface and it is more apparent for out-of-phase bubbles. There are great differences in dynamic behaviour between the in-phase bubbles and the out-of-phase bubbles due to the depression effect. Furthermore, the interaction among eight bubbles is simulated with a three-dlmensional model, and the evolving process and the relevant physical phenomena are presented. These phenomena can give a reference to the future work on the power of bubbles induced by multiple charges exploding simultaneously or continuously. 展开更多

A highly efficient "hybrid integral-equation method" for computing hydrodynamic added-mass, wave-damping, and wave-exciting force of general body geometries with a vertical axis of symmetry is presented. The hybrid method utilizes a numerical inner domain and a semi-infinite analytical outer domain separated by a vertical cylindrical matching boundary.Eigenfunction representation of velocity potential is used in the outer domain;the three-dimensional potential in the inner domain is solved using a "two-dimensional" boundary element method with ring sources and ring dipoles to exploit the body symmetry for efficiency. With proper solution matching at the common boundary, both radiation and diffraction potentials can be solved efficiently while satisfying the far-field radiation condition exactly. This method is applied to compute the hydrodynamic properties of two different body geometries: a vertical-walled moonpool with a bottom plate that restricts the opening and a spar-like structure with a diverging bottom opening inspired by designs of floating Oscillating Water Columns. The effects of the size of the bottom opening on the hydrodynamic properties of the body are investigated for both geometries. The heave motion of the floater as well as the motion of the internal free surface under incident wave excitation are computed and studied for the spar-like structure. 展开更多

Two floating structures in close proximity are very commonly seen in offshore engineering. They are often subjected to steep waves and, therefore, the transient effects on their hydrodynamic features are of great concem. This paper uses the quasi arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian finite element method (QALE-FEM), based on the fully nonlinear potential theory (FNPT), to numerically investigate the interaction between two 3-D floating structures, which undergo motions with 6 degrees of freedom (DOFs), and are subjected to waves with different incident angles. The transient behaviours of floating structures, the effect of the accompanied structures, and the nonlinearity on the motion of and the wave loads on the structures are the main focuses of the study. The investigation reveals an important transient effects causing considerably larger structure motion than that in steady state. The results also indicate that the accompanied structure in close proximity enhances the interaction between different motion modes and results in stronger nonlinearity causing 2hal-order component to be of similar significance to the fundamental one. 展开更多

Numerical simulation tools based on potential-flow theory and/or Morison’s equation are widely used for predicting the hydrodynamic responses of floating offshore wind platforms. In general, these simplified approaches are used for the analysis under operational conditions, albeit with a carefully selected approach to account for viscous effects.Nevertheless, due to the limit hydrodynamic modelling to linear and weakly nonlinear models, these approaches severely underpredict the low-frequency nonlinear wave loads and dynamic responses of a semisubmersible. They may not capture important nonlinearities in severe sea states. For the prediction of wave-induced motions and loads on a semisubmersible, this work systematically compares a fully nonlinear viscous-flow solver and a hybrid model combining the potential-flow theory with Morison-drag loads in steep waves. Results show that when nonlinear phenomena are not dominant, the results obtained by the hybrid model and the high-fidelity method show reasonable agreement, while larger discrepancies occur for highly nonlinear regular waves.Specifically, regular waves with various steepness over different frequencies are focused in the present study, which supplements the understanding in applicability of these two groups of method. 展开更多
