The development of sustainable electrode materials for energy storage systems has become very important and porous carbons derived from biomass have become an important candidate because of their tunable pore structure, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness.Recent advances in controlling the pore structure of these carbons and its relationship between to is energy storage performance are discussed, emphasizing the critical role of a balanced distribution of micropores, mesopores and macropores in determining electrochemical behavior.Particular attention is given to how the intrinsic components of biomass precursors(lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose)influence pore formation during carbonization.Carbonization and activation strategies to precisely control the pore structure are introduced. Finally, key challenges in the industrial production of these carbons are outlined, and future research directions are proposed. These include the establishment of a database of biomass intrinsic structures and machine learning-assisted pore structure engineering, aimed at providing guidance for the design of high-performance carbon materials for next-generation energy storage devices. 展开更多

Changes to the microstructure of a hard carbon(HC)and its solid electrolyte interface(SEI)can be effective in improving the electrode kinetics. However, achieving fast charging using a simple and inexpensive strategy without sacrificing its initial Coulombic efficiency remains a challenge in sodium ion batteries.A simple liquid-phase coating approach has been used to generate a pitch-derived soft carbon layer on the HC surface, and its effect on the porosity of HC and SEI chemistry has been studied.A variety of structural characterizations show a soft carbon coating can increase the defect and ultra-micropore contents. The increase in ultra-micropore comes from both the soft carbon coatings and the larger pores within the HC that are partially filled by pitch, which provides more Na+storage sites.In-situ FTIR/EIS and ex-situ XPS showed that the soft carbon coating induced the formation of thinner SEI that is richer in NaF from the electrolyte, which stabilized the interface and promoted the charge transfer process. As a result, the anode produced fastcharging(329.8 mAh g^(−1)at 30 mA g^(−1)and 198.6 mAh g^(−1)at 300 mA g^(−1))and had a better cycling performance(a high capacity retention of 81.4%after 100 cycles at 150 mA g^(−1)).This work reveals the critical role of coating layer in changing the pore structure,SEI chemistry and diffusion kinetics of hard carbon, which enables rational design of sodium-ion battery anode with enhanced fast charging capability. 展开更多

Biomass-derived hard carbons, usually prepared by pyrolysis, are widely considered the most promising anode materials for sodium-ion bat-teries(SIBs)due to their high capacity, low poten-tial,sustainability,cost-effectiveness,and environ-mental friendliness. The pyrolysis method affects the microstructure of the material, and ultimately its so-dium storage performance. Our previous work has shown that pyrolysis in a sealed graphite vessel im-proved the sodium storage performance of the car-bon,however the changes in its microstructure and the way this influences the sodium storage are still unclear.A series of hard carbon materials derived from corncobs(CCG-T,where T is the pyrolysis temperature)were pyrolyzed in a sealed graphite vessel at different temperatures. As the pyrolysis temperature increased from 1000 to 1400℃ small carbon domains gradually transformed into long and curved domains. At the same time,a greater number of large open pores with uniform apertures,as well as more closed pores, were formed. With the further increase of pyrolysis temperature to 1600℃,the long and curved domains became longer and straighter, and some closed pores gradually became open.CCG-1400,with abundant closed pores, had a superior SIB performance, with an initial reversible ca-pacity of 320.73 mAh g^(-1) at a current density of 30 mA g^(-1),an initial Coulomb efficiency(ICE)of 84.34%,and a capacity re-tention of 96.70%after 100 cycles. This study provides a method for the precise regulation of the microcrystalline and pore structures of hard carbon materials. 展开更多

As a typical sedimentary soft rock, mudstone has the characteristics of being easily softened and disintegrated under the effect of wetting and drying(WD).The first cycle of WD plays an important role in the entire WD cycles.X-ray micro-computed tomography(micro-CT)was used as a non-destructive tool to quantitatively analyze microstructural changes of the mudstone due to the first cycle of WD.The test results show that WD leads to an increase of pore volume and pore connectivity in the mudstone. The porosity and fractal dimension of each slice of mudstone not only increase in value, but also in fluctuation amplitude. The pattern of variation in the frequency distribution of the equivalent radii of connected, isolated pores and pore throats in mudstone under WD effect satisfies the Gaussian distribution.Under the effect of WD,pores and pore throats with relatively small sizes increase the most. The sphericity of the pores in mudstones is positively correlated with the pore radius. The WD effect transforms the originally angular and flat pores into round and regular pores. This paper can provide a reference for the study of the deterioration and catastrophic mechanisms of mudstone under wetting and drying cycles. 展开更多

The geological structure of coal seams in China is remarkably varied and complex, with coalbed methane reservoirs marked by significant heterogeneity and low permeability, creating substantial technical challenges for efficient extraction. This study systematically investigates the impact of liquid nitrogen immersion(LNI)on the coal’s pore structure and its mechanism of enhancing permeability with a combination of quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)analysis, nitrogen adsorption experiments, and fractal dimension calculations. The results demonstrate that LNI can damage the coal’s pore structure and promote fracture expansion through thermal stress induction and moisture phase transformation, thereby enhancing the permeability of coal seams. The T_(2)peak area in the NMR experiments on coal samples subjected to LNI treatment shows a significant increase, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET)specific surface area decreases to 6.02 m^(2)/g,and the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda(BJH)total pore volume increases to 14.99 mm^(3)/g.Furthermore,changes in fractal dimensions(D_(1)rising from 2.804 to 2.837,and D_(2)falling from 2.757 to 2.594)indicate a notable enhancement in the complexity of the pore structure. With increasing LNI cycles, the adsorption capacity of the coal samples diminishes, suggesting a significant optimization of the pore structure. This optimization is particularly evident in the reconstruction of the micropore structure, which in turn greatly enhances the complexity and connectivity of the sample’s pore network. In summary, the study concludes that LNI technology can effectively improve the permeability of coal seams and the extraction efficiency of coalbed methane by optimizing the micropore structure and enhancing pore connectivity, which offers a potential method for enhancing the permeability of gas-bearing coal seams and facilitating the development and utilization of coalbed methane. 展开更多

As the second most important solid waste produced by coal-fired power plants, the improper management of coal-fired slag has the potential to result in environmental pollution. It is therefore imperative that high-value utilization pathways for coal-fired slag should be developed. In this study, modified magnesium slag(MMS),produced by a magnesium smelter, was selected as the alkali activator. The activated silica-aluminum solid wastes, namely coal-fired slag(CFS)and mineral powder(MP),were employed as pozzolanic materials in the preparation of alkali-activated cementitious materials. The alkali-activated cementitious materials prepared with 50 wt%MMS,40 wt%CFS and 10 wt%MP exhibited favorable mechanical properties, with a compressive strength of 32.804 MPa in the paste sample cured for 28 d.Then, the activated silica-aluminum solid waste consisting of CFS-MP generated a significant amount of C-S(A)-H gels,AFt,and other products, which were observed to occupy the pore structure of the specimen. In addition, the secondary hydration reaction of CFS-MP occurs in high alkalinity environments, resulting in the formation of a mutually stimulated and promoted reaction system between CFS-MP and MMS,this will subsequently accelerate the hydrolysis reaction of MMS.It is important to emphasize that the amount of MMS in alkali-activated cementitious materials must be strictly regulated to avert the potential issue of incomplete depolymerization-repolymerization of active silica-aluminum solid waste containing CFS-MP.This in turn could have a deleterious impact on the late strength of the cementitious materials. The aim of this work is to improve the joint disposal of MMS,CFS and MP and thereby provide a scientific basis for the development of environmentally friendly and low-carbon modified magnesium slag alkali-activated coal-fired slag based cementitious materials for mine backfilling. 展开更多

The study aims to investigate the carbonated water erosion mechanism of lining concrete in tunnels traversing karst environment and enhance its resistance. In this study, dynamic carbonated water erosion was simulated to assess erosion depth, microstructure, phase migrations, and pore structure in various tunnel lining cement-based materials.Additionally,Ca^(2+)leaching was analyzed, and impact of Ca/Si molar ratio in hydration products on erosion resistance was discussed by thermodynamic calculations. The results indicate that carbonated water erosion caused rough and porous surface on specimens, with reduced portlandite and CaCO_(3) content, increased porosity, and an enlargement of pore size. The thermodynamic calculations indicate that the erosion is spontaneous, driven by physical dissolution and chemical reactions dominated by Gibbs free energy. And the erosion reactions proceed more spontaneously and extensively when Ca/Si molar ratio in hydration products was higher.Therefore,cement-based materials with higher portlandite content exhibit weaker erosion resistance.Model-building concrete, with C-S-H gel and portlandite as primary hydration products, has greater erosion susceptibility than shotcrete with ettringite as main hydration product. Moreover, adding silicon-rich mineral admixtures can enhance the erosion resistance. This research offers theory and tech insights to boost cement-based material resistance against carbonated water erosion in karst tunnel engineering. 展开更多

To investigate the influence of the activated carbon pore structure on the adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), three commercial activated carbon samples were chosen. The fixed-bed thermostatic adsorption experiments were conducted under certain conditions, where toluene, acetone, and 1, 2-dichloroethane acted as adsorbents. Then, the incidence relation between the experimental results and the activated carbon pore structure was analyzed. After that, the results of the correlation analysis were verified in accordance with fractal theory and adsorption characteristic curve analysis. The results show that the pore diameter gradient is helpful for strengthening the intemal diffusion. Under the same condition, the adsorption of organic gases tends to be selective, and the positions of toluene, acetone and 1, 2-dichloroethane adsorbed on the activated carbon are mainly in the ranges of 1.27-1.49 nm, 0.67-0.84 nm and 1.39-1.75 nm, respectively. The relationship between adsorption capacity and activated carbon pore volume can accurately explain the spreading process of the adsorbents in the activated carbon. 展开更多

Steam-cured condition is found to cause larger porosity and worse properties of concrete compared with normal curing condition. For the sake of seeking effective measurements to eliminate this bad effect of steam-cured condition on concrete, the water sorptivity and pore structure of steam-cured concretes exposed to different subsequent curing conditions were investigated after steam-curing treatment. The capillary absorption coefficient and porosity of the corresponding concretes were analyzed, and their mechanisms were also discussed. The results indicate that water sorptivity and pore structure of steam-cured concrete are greatly influenced by the curing condition used in subsequent ages. Exposure steam-cured concrete to air condition has an obviously bad effect on its properties and microstructures. Adopting subsequent curing of immersing steam-cured concrete into about 20℃ water after steam curing period can significantly decrease its capillary absorption coefficient and porosity. Steam-cured concrete with 7 d water curing has minimum capillary absorption coefficient and total porosity. Its water sorptivity is decreased by 23% compared with standard curing concrete and the porosity is 9.6% lower. Moreover, the corresponding gradient of water sorptivity and porosity of steam-cured concrete both decrease, thus mictostructure of concrete becomes more homogeneous. 展开更多

To understand the effect of steam curing temperature on the hydrate and microstructure of hardened cement paste, several measuring methods including X-ray diffraction(XRD),atomic absorption spectroscopy(ASS),ion chromatography, conductivity meter,alternating-current impedance spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)are employed to investigate the hydration characteristics, pore solution composition and conductivity, resistivity and pore structure during the steam curing process.Experimental results show that steam curing promotes the hydration process, greatly raises the resistivity, and decreases the porosity of specimen at early age.Compared with being treated at 45℃,higher temperature leads to a fast decomposition of ettringite at initial stage of the constant temperature treatment period, which improves the relative content and ionic activity of the conductive ions in pore solution.Furthermore, the number of pores larger than 200 nm increases significantly, which reduces the resistivity of the hardened cement paste.Cement paste treated at 45℃ has a more stable and denser microstructure with less damages. 展开更多

Taking the selection of coal-tar pitch as precursor and KOH as activated agent, the activated carbon electrode material was fabricated for supercapacitor. The surface area and the pore structure of activated carbon were analyzed by Nitro adsorption method. The electrochemical properties of the activated carbons were determined using two-electrode capacitors in 6 mol/L KOH aqueous electrolytes. The influences of activated temperature and mass ratio of KOH to C on the pore structure and electrochemical property of porous activated carbon were investigated in detail. The reasons for the changes of pore structure and electrochemical performance of activated carbon prepared under different conditions were also discussed theoretically. The results indicate that the maximum specific capacitance of 240 F/g can be obtained in alkaline medium, and the surface area, the pore structure and the specific capacitance of activated carbon depend on the treatment methods; the capacitance variation of activated carbon cannot be interpreted only by the change of surface area and pore structure, the lattice order and the electrolyte wetting effect of the activated carbon should also be taken into account. 展开更多

A novel method was developed to establish a realistic three dimensional(3D) network model representing pore space in low permeability sandstone.Digital core of rock sample was established by the combination of micro-CT scanning and image processing, then 3D pore-throat network model was extracted from the digital core through analyzing pore space topology, calculating pore-throat parameters and simplifying the shapes of pores and throats. The good agreements between predicted and measured porosity and absolute permeability verified the validity of this new network model.Gas-water flow mechanism was studied by using pore-scale simulations, and the influence of pore structure parameters, including coordination number, aspect ratio and shape factor,on gas-water flow, was investigated. The present simulation results show that with the increment of coordination number, gas flow ability in network improves and the effect of invading water on blocking gas flow weakens. The smaller the aspect ratio is,the stronger the anisotropy of the network is,resulting in the increase of seepage resistance. It is found that the shape factor mainly affects the end points in relative permeability curves, and for a highly irregular pore or throat with a small shape factor, the irreducible water saturation(Swi) and residual gas saturation(Sgr) are relatively high. 展开更多

Cracks easily generate in concrete at early age owing to the shrinkage deformation.CaO-based expansion agent(CEA)and superabsorbent polymers(SAP)have been extensively used for the mitigation of concrete shrinkage. The macroscopic properties of concrete are highly determined by the microstructure. In this study, the influence of CEA and SAP addition on the pore structure evolution of cement paste under different curing temperatures was evaluated via low-field nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.Test results indicated that,in cement paste,a higher CEA content led to a higher porosity and a larger most probable pore diameter(MPPD).Meanwhile,SAP addition increased the porosity and MPPD of CEA cement paste at early age but decreased them after 7 d,and a higher SAP content always brought a higher porosity and MPPD.Furthermore, the addition of SAP led to a lower porosity and MPPD of CEA cement paste than that of plain cement paste after 14 d.Moreover, the porosity and MPPD of CEA cement paste decreased first and subsequently increased as the curing temperature raised. 展开更多

The early-age thermal cracking easily generates and severely impairs the durability of concrete. The temperature rising inhibitor(TRI)was utilized to regulate the temperature evolution by controlling the cement hydration process. This paper aimed to investigate the pore structure formation and hydration characteristics of cement paste containing TRI by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance. The experiment showed that the T_(2) peak of cement paste shifted from 7.32 ms to 0.23 ms regardless of TRI addition. But the pattern of pore structure formation was changed with TRI addition, that is,the pore structure formation was delayed, and the pore successively shifted to left in two parts. In addition,TRI addition significantly prolonged the duration of gel pore formation and greatly decreased the increase rate of gel water, which implied that TRI introduction hindered the growth of C-S-H,and subsequently decreased the hydration rates and delayed the main hydration peak.Meanwhile,TRI dissolved and diffused rapidly at 40℃,delaying the hydration of cement paste seriously. Moreover,TRI brought about the C-S-H nucleation homogeneous and the ion concentration uniform, which might reduce the localized curvature occurring on the sheet of C-S-H,and then decreased the T_(2) intensity of capillary water and gel water. 展开更多

The results show that specific surface area, the mesopore volume, and the specific capacitance increase with the increase of the mass ratio of KOH to char (m(KOH)/m(char)) and the activation time, respectively. When m(KOH)/m(char) is 4.0, the specific surface area and the mesopore volume reach the maximum values, i.e. 1 960 m2/g and 0.308 4 cm3/g, and the specific capacitance is 120.7 F/g synchronously. Compared with the chemical activation, the activated carbons prepared by chemical-physical activation show a larger mesopore volume, a higher ratio of mesopore and a larger specific capacitance. 展开更多
