This study unveils the possibility of using PP micro-fibres to improve the impact behaviour of fibre-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete(FRUHPC) columns. Results show that the addition of fibres significantly improves the impact behaviour of FRUHPC columns by shifting the failure mechanism from brittle shear to favourable flexural failure. The addition of steel or PP fibres affected the impact responses differently. Steel fibres considerably increased the peak impact force(up to 18%) while PP micro-fibres slightly increased the peak(3%-4%). FRUHPC significantly reduced the maximum midheight displacement by up to 30%(under 20°impact) and substantially improved the displacement recovery by up to 100%(under 20° impact). FRUHPC with steel fibres significantly improved the energy absorption while those with PP micro-fibres reduced the energy absorption, which is different from the effect of PP-macro fibre reported in the literature. The optimal fibre content for micro-PP fibres is 1% due to its minimal fibre usage and low peak and residual displacement. This study highlights the potential of FRUHPC as a promising material for impact-resistant structures by creating a more favourable flexural failure mechanism, enhancing ductility and toughness under impact loading, and advancing the understanding of the role of fibres in structural performance.展开更多

Methods Polypropylene (PP) composites filled with talc(Ta), baryta sulfate and calcium carbonate coupled with silane grafted polypropylene (PP-g-Si) were made, their mechanical properties and thermal properties were investigated, respectively. Results As compared with the non-coupled composites, the mechanical properties of PP/Ta/PP-g-Si composites were improved to some extent, though the values of tensile modulus and the strain at peak were decreased. But for PP/BaSO4 and PP/CaCO3 composites, the values of their mechanical properties varied slightly or even decreased with increasing PP-g-Si content within the experimental component. Meanwhile, PP-g-Si also affected the melting and crystallization behavior of PP in the composites. Conclusion PP-g-Si offers compatibilization in PP/Ta composites, but offers no-compatibilization in PP/BaSO4 and PP/CaCO3 composites within the extent of the present range of PP-g-Si, which shows that PP-g-Si can be used as the macromolecular coupling agent of PP and Ta composite.展开更多

Structural and morphological changes on the membrane surface were characterized by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR/ATR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Water contact angles of the membrane surfaces were also measured by the sessile drop method. Results reveal that both the plasma-treating conditions and the adsorbed DMAEMA amount have remarkable effects on the immobilization degree of DMAEMA. Peroxide determination by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrvlhydrazyl (DPPH) method verifies the exsistence of radicals induced by plasma, which activize the immobilization reaction. Pure water contact angle on the membrane surface decreased with the increase of DMAEMA immobilization degree, which indicates an enhanced hydrophilicity for the modified membranes. The effects of immobilization degrees on pure water fluxes were also measured. It is shown that pure water fluxes first increased with immobilization degree and then decreased. Finally, permeation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme solution were measured to evaluate the antifouling property of the DMAEMA-modified membranes, from which it is shown that both hydrophilicity and electrostatic repulsion are beneficial for membrane antifouling.展开更多

Three wood to polymer ratios (40:60, 60:40, and 80:20) and five MAPP loading levels (0, 1, 2, 4 and 8%) were used to study their effects on the viscoelastic prop- erties of MAPP-WPC. The results show that: 1) higher wood to polymer ratio corresponds to higher stress relaxation levels for unmodified WPC. The modification with MAPP has an obvious effect on the stress relaxation of MAPP-WPC at higher wood to polymer ratios (60:40 and 80:20), but almost no effect at the 40:60 wood to polymer ratio. The optimal MAPP loading level for the wood to polymer ratio of 60:40 appears at 1%; 2) the storage modulus reaches its maximum at a MAPP loading level of 1% for wood to polymer ratios of 40:60 and 60:40, while for the 80:20 wood to polymer ratio, a higher storage modulus is observed at higher MAPP loading levels, which is quite consistent with the stress relaxation results. The results suggested that a suitable loading level of MAPP has a positive effect on the viscoelastic properties of WPC at higher wood to polymer ratios. Excessive MAPP loading would have resulted in adverse effects.展开更多

The structure of modified wood flour was analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and its effect on the physical and mechanical properties of wood flour/PP composites was evaluated. The SEM results indicated the "bulking" effect of PEG on wood flour, which resulted in reduced water uptake. The combination of PEG and heat treatment further improved the moisture resistance of the composites. However, PEG modification had a negative effect on the flexural modulus of rupture (MOR) and the modulus of elasticity (MOE); whereas heat treatment partly compensated for this reduc- tion. For dynamic mechanical properties, PEG treatment decreased the storage modulus (E'). However, the heat treatment resulted in an increase orE' of the wood flour/PP composites, with the temperature of loss factor peaks shifting to a higher temperature.展开更多

The mechanical properties and morphology of wood powder/polypropylene composites were studied. The results showed that the compatibilizer can increase the impact strength of the wood/polypropylene composites, but it has a slightly negative effect on the tensile and flexural strength. For dynamic mechanical properties and Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Aluminate-based coupling agent can slightly increase the storage modulus and loss modulus, and decrease the melt point and the Calorie of Melt. Scanning electron microscopy showed that Aluminate-based coupling agent had a stronger affinity between the wood and polypropylene surfaces. These results suggested that Aluminate-based coupling agent may play a useful role in improving wood powder/polypropylene composites properties.展开更多

The chemi- cal changes that appeared on the surface of the samples were investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FT4R) spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR- FTIR) spectroscopy after treatment for 2 min, 4 min and 6 rain in a nitrogen plasma chamber. Effects of the plasma treatment on the surface topographies and contact angles of the untreated and plasma treated films were also analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and a contact angle measuring system. The results show that the plasma treated films become more hydrophilic with an enhanced wettability due to the formation of some new polar groups on the surface of the treated films. Moreover, at higher exposure times, the total surface energy in all treated films increased while a reduction in contact angle occurred. The behavior of surface roughness in each sample was completely different at higher exposure times.展开更多

The changes in the superficial contact angle and the superficial composition of the un-treated and treated PP powders were analyzed by means of water contact angle (WCA) measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The water contact angle changed from the original value of 130.2° before plasma treatment to the value of 73.6° after treatment for 5 minutes. With the increase in plasma treating time, there were a decrease in the water contact angle and an increase in the content of oxygen containing polar functional groups (i.e., C-O, C=O and O-C=O). Both XPS and ATR-FTIR results indicated that the plasma treatment led to the formation of oxygen containing polar functional groups due to oxidation on the surface of the PP powders, and the trend of variation of the water contact angle with plasma treating time was related to the concentration of oxygen atom on the treated PP powders surface. Furthermore, the aging of the plasma-treated PP powders was investigated.展开更多

Yet, so far, the coupling mechanisms of WPC have not been completely understood. In order to further clarify the interfacial coupling mechanism, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss factor of Simon poplar wood flour/polypropylene composites without additives at different wood contents were measured at oven-dry state, and parameters and thermodynamic quantities of the relaxation process were also analyzed and calculated. Consequently, an obvious relaxation process based on the reorientation of methanol groups in amorphous region of wood cell wall was observed exactly that its dielectric loss factor peak decreased with the decreasing wood content within the measured range of 50%-100%. With the trend of dielectric relaxation strength, the two changing trends both revealed that the existence of polypropylene could hinder reorientation of methanol groups. Following the decreasing wood contents, the effect of the hindrance on the dielectric properties turned obvious gradually. It elucidated that introduction of polypropylene caused the quantities of hydrogen bonds formed between each methanol group and the groups around it change. The same conclusion could be drawn from the analysis of thermodynamic quantities during the dielectric relaxation progress.展开更多

TMB was proved to be an effective b-crystalline nucleating agent for WF/PP. The DSC data showed that the crystallization peak temperature(Tp) increased and the half-time(t1/2) decreased with the addition of TMB.Three theoretical models were used to analyze the nonisothermal crystallization process. The modified Avrami method and Mo method successfully explained the nonisothermal crystallization behavior of PP and its composites. Their activation energies for non-isothermal crystallization were determined basing on the Kissinger method.展开更多

The structure of the compound was demonstrated by 1H and 31P NMR. The propylene polymerization catalysts were prepared by incorporating an internal donor, and the content of Ti, H and C in the catalysts was also checked by elemental analysis. The effect of dosage of the donor, the Al/Ti ratio and the polymerization temperature on the catalyst activity were studied, the results suggested that the dosage of donor, the Al/Ti ratio and the polymerization temperature could affect not only the activity of catalyst but also the isotacticity index of the polymer. A catalyst with high activity was selected, and the polypropylene formed in the presence of this catalyst had high isotacticity index.展开更多

Herein, the influence of electron-beam irradiation on the structure and properties of PP was examined. The static EB irradiation conditions were 1.2 MeV at a low dose rate of 20 kGy/h to achieve absorbed doses ranging from 45, to 60, 100, and 200 kGy.The molecular structure was first evaluated by measuring the carboxyl index and the relative radical concentrations via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and electron spin resonance, respectively. Mechanical, differential scanning colorimetric, and rheological tests were carried out to further investigate the changes in the properties(tensile, crystalizing, and viscoelastic properties) of irradiated PP, which showed good agreement with the structural analysis results. We found that radio-oxidative degradation(chain scission) was predominant, which can be due to the low dose rate facilitating oxygen diffusion into the PP matrix during electron-beam irradiation.展开更多

The results suggested that a suitable loading level of MAPP has a positive effect on the viscoelastic properties of WPC at higher wood to polymer ratios. Excessive MAPP loading would have resulted in adverse effects.

文摘In order to improve the dimensional stability of wood-polymer composites, wood flour pre-treated by polyethylene glycol (PEG) at two different concentrations and then thermally treated at 140℃, was used as raw material to produce wood flour/poly- propylene (PP) composites at a wood content of 40%. However, the heat treatment resulted in an increase orE' of the wood flour/PP composites, with the temperature of loss factor peaks shifting to a higher temperature.

文摘Aluminate-based coupling agent was added as a compatibilizer to make the chemical modification of wood powder. These results suggested that Aluminate-based coupling agent may play a useful role in improving wood powder/polypropylene composites properties.
文摘In this study, commercial biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), polyvinyl chlo- ride (PVC) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films were treated with nitrogen plasma over different exposure times in a Pyrex tube surrounded by a DC variable magnetic field. The behavior of surface roughness in each sample was completely different at higher exposure times.
文摘A radio frequency argon plasma reactor with a stirrer was employed for the surface treatment of polypropylene (PP) powders. Furthermore, the aging of the plasma-treated PP powders was investigated.

文摘Interfacial compatibility is a crucial factor to the performance of wood-plastic composites (WPCs). The same conclusion could be drawn from the analysis of thermodynamic quantities during the dielectric relaxation progress.

文摘The influence of aryl amide compounds(TMB)as b-nucleating agents, on the non-isothermal crystallization of a wood-flour/polypropylene composite(WF/PP)prepared by compression molding was investigated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. Their activation energies for non-isothermal crystallization were determined basing on the Kissinger method.

文摘Polyethylene octene elastomer (POE) as impact modifier was incorporated into wood/polypropylene composites (WPC) to enhance the impact strength of the composite. Two extruding routes, i.e. direct extruding route and two-stage extruding route, were adopted to produce Wood Powder/PP/POE ternary composites. The mechanical and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) properties of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the addition of POE can increase the impact strength of the composites, and the composites produced via two-stage extruding route showed superior mechanical properties. The results of the DMA confirmed the mechanical tests.

文摘A P-substituted sulfonyl-containing compound was synthesized in the lab. A catalyst with high activity was selected, and the polypropylene formed in the presence of this catalyst had high isotacticity index.

文摘Due to the development of the new energy industry, polypropylene with ultra-high molecular weight plays a crucial role for battery isolation membrane. This work investigated the effect of internal electron donor of Ziegler-Natta catalyst system on the molecular weight of the obtained polypropylene. The scanning electron microscope(SEM)and Canon camera were used to characterize the surface morphologies of catalyst particles and polymer particles, respectively.Compared with the polypropylene particles featuring a spherical shape, these study results confirmed that the morphology duplication theory from the catalyst particle to the morphology of polymer particle was exhibited. The gel permeation chromatography(GPC)results revealed that the obtained polypropylene has a much higher average molecular weight than those prepared by conventional method. The Fourier transform infrared spectrometry(FT-IR)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)revealed that the carbonyl oxygen atom on ester group was preferentially bound to Mg and Ti,as compared to the ether oxygen atom. The XPS results showed that the ratio of Ti^(3+)/Ti^(4+)could be changed by internal electron donors. When Ti3+content was nearly 99%in the Ziegler-Natta catalyst system, isotactic polypropylene with an ultra-high molecular weight of up to 1.42×10^(6)g/mol was obtained by Cat.3.This result implied that internal electron donor ID3 could reduce theβ-hydride elimination reaction to further increase the molecular weight of the obtained polymer.
文摘Side reaction pathways are observed to occur between antioxidants and peroxide during the processing of multiple resin grades mediated by controlled peroxide-induced degradation of impact polypropylene. In the present work, the reaction mechanism and main by-products between antioxidants and peroxides were investigated. The results demonstrate that peroxides greatly accelerate the decomposition reactions, and the free radicals formed from peroxide decomposition react with, for example, the antioxidant AO1010 to produce dehydrogenation of phenyl propionic unit(s)at the a position(cinnamic acid ester moiety),which generates a conjugated system leading to the increased color of the product. It is the first time to confirm the cinnamic acid moiety's existence and report its NMR data.Further, this work confirms the dehydrogenation mechanism by comparison with different sterically hindered phenolic antioxidants. It also systematically summarizes the oxidation and degradation mechanism of AO168 and AO1010 under air and peroxide environments, respectively.Based on present study, clear guidelines are obtained to improve the quality of polymeric products, especially the appearance and stability, during product development.

文摘While the high-energy radiation effects on polypropylene, which are crucial for the cable industry for nuclear power plants, have been thoroughly studied, the property changes of PP at low-dose-rate electron-beam irradiation are far from elucidated. We found that radio-oxidative degradation(chain scission) was predominant, which can be due to the low dose rate facilitating oxygen diffusion into the PP matrix during electron-beam irradiation.
