A new blasting approach of combined blastholes with different diameters is proposed to solve the problems of oversize boulders and rock toes in open-pit mine. A non-ideal detonation model and a statistical damage constitutive model are implemented in dynamic finite element analysis to investigate the formation mechanism of oversize boulders and toes. The damage distribution and evolution process of rock blasting fragmentation is simulated, and the scheme is further optimized. Numerical analysis results showed that pocket charges and satellite blastholes can only improve bench top fragmentation, but they cannot reduce the oversize in the middle and bottom of bench as well as the toe problem. The new blasting approach of combined blastholes with different diameters can effectively reduce the oversize boulders and toes as well as the production costs. 展开更多

Water decoupling charge blasting excels in rock breaking, relying on its uniform pressure transmission and low energy dissipation. The water decoupling coefficients can adjust the contributions of the stress wave and quasi-static pressure. However, the quantitative relationship between the two contributions is unclear, and it is difficult to provide reasonable theoretical support for the design of water decoupling blasting. In this study,a theoretical model of blasting fracturing partitioning is established. The mechanical mechanism and determination method of the optimal decoupling coefficient are obtained. The reliability is verified through model experiments and a field test. The results show that with the increasing of decoupling coefficient, the rock breaking ability of blasting dynamic action decreases, while quasi-static action increases and then decreases. The ability of quasi-static action to wedge into cracks changes due to the spatial adjustment of the blast hole and crushed zone. The quasi-static action plays a leading role in the fracturing range, determining an optimal decoupling coefficient. The optimal water decoupling coefficient is not a fixed value, which can be obtained by the proposed theoretical model.Compared with the theoretical results, the maximum error in the model experiment results is 8.03%,and the error in the field test result is 3.04%. 展开更多

Blasting operations, which are crucial to open-pit mine production due to their simplicity and efficiency, require precise control through accurate vibration velocity calculations. The conventional Sadowski formula mainly focuses on blast center distance but neglects the amplification effect of blasting vibration waves by terraced terrain, from which the calculated blasting vibration velocities are smaller than the actual values, affecting the safety of the project. To address this issue, our model introduces the influences of slope and time into Sadowski formula to measure safety through blast vibration displacement. In the northern section of the open-pit quartz mine in Jinchang City,Gansu Province,China, the data of a continuous blasting slope project are referred to.Our findings reveal a noticeable vibration amplification effect during blasting when a multi-stage slope platform undergoes a sudden cross-sectional change near the upper overhanging surface. The amplification vibration coefficient increases with height, while vibration waves within rocks decrease from bottom to top.Conversely, platforms without distinct crosssectional changes exhibit no pronounced amplification during blasting. In addition, the vibration intensity decreases with distance as the rock height difference change propagates. The results obtained by the proposed blast vibration displacement equation incorporating slope shape influence closely agree with real-world scenarios.According to Pearson correlation coefficient(PPMCC)analysis, the average accuracy rate of our model is 88.84%,which exceeds the conventional Sadowski formula(46.92%). 展开更多

Blast furnace gas(BFG)is an important by-product energy for the iron and steel industry and has been widely used for heating or electricity generation. However, the undesirable contaminants in BFG(especially H_(2)S)generate harmful environmental emissions. The desulfurization of BFG is urgent for integrated steel plants due to the stringent ultra-low emission standards.Compared with other desulfurization materials,zeolite-based adsorbents represent a viable option with low costs and long service life.In this study,an ammonia-induced CuO modified 13X adsorbent(NH_(3)–CuO/13X)was prepared for H_(2)S removal from simulated BFG at low temperature. The XRD,H_(2)-TPR and TEM analysis proved that smaller CuO particles were formed and the dispersion of Cu on the surface of 13X zeolite was improved via the induction of ammonia.Evaluation on H_(2)S adsorption performance of the adsorbent was carried out using simulated BFG,and the results showed that NH_(3)–CuO/13X-3 has better breakthrough sulfur capacity, which was more than twice the sulfur capacity of CuO/13X.It is proposed that the enhanced desulfurization performance of NH_(3)–CuO/13X is attributed to an abundant pore of 13X,and combined action of 13X and CuO.This work provided an effective way to improve the sulfur capacity of zeolite-based adsorbents via impregnation method by ammonia induction. 展开更多

Accurately predicting the powder factor during blasting is essential for sustainable production planning in low-grade mines. This research presents a method for predicting powder factor based on the heterogeneity of rock mass rating(RMR).Considering a low-grade metal mine as an example, this study exploited geostatistical methods to obtain independent RMR for each block unit.A three-dimensional spatial distribution model for the powder factor was developed on the basis of the relationships between the RMR and the powder factor.Subsequently, models for blasting cost and mining value were built and employed to optimize the open-pit limit. The multi-variable model based on the RMR performed well in predicting the powder factor, achieving a correlation coefficient of 0.88(root mean square error of 4.3)and considerably outperforming the uniaxial compressive strength model. After model optimization, the mean size and standard deviation of the fragments in the blast pile decreased by 8.5%and 35.1%,respectively,whereas the boulder yield and its standard deviation decreased by 33.3%and 58.8%,respectively.Additionally,optimizing the open-pit limit using this method reduced the amount of rock, increased the amount of ore,and lowered blasting costs, thereby enhancing the economic efficiency of the mine. This study provides valuable insights for blasting design and mining decisions, demonstrating the advantages and potential applications of powder factor prediction based on the heterogeneity of rock mass quality. 展开更多

To address the problems of low accuracy by the CONWEP model and poor efficiency by the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian(CEL)method in predicting close-range air blast loads of cylindrical charges,a neural network-based simulation(NNS)method with higher accuracy and better efficiency was proposed. The NNS method consisted of three main steps.First, the parameters of blast loads, including the peak pressures and impulses of cylindrical charges with different aspect ratios(L/D)at different stand-off distances and incident angles were obtained by two-dimensional numerical simulations.Subsequently, incident shape factors of cylindrical charges with arbitrary aspect ratios were predicted by a neural network. Finally, reflected shape factors were derived and implemented into the subroutine of the ABAQUS code to modify the CONWEP model, including modifications of impulse and overpressure. The reliability of the proposed NNS method was verified by related experimental results.Remarkable accuracy improvement was acquired by the proposed NNS method compared with the unmodified CONWEP model. Moreover, huge efficiency superiority was obtained by the proposed NNS method compared with the CEL method. The proposed NNS method showed good accuracy when the scaled distance was greater than 0.2 m/kg^(1/3).It should be noted that there is no need to generate a new dataset again since the blast loads satisfy the similarity law,and the proposed NNS method can be directly used to simulate the blast loads generated by different cylindrical charges. The proposed NNS method with high efficiency and accuracy can be used as an effective method to analyze the dynamic response of structures under blast loads, and it has significant application prospects in designing protective structures. 展开更多

The muzzle blast overpressure induces disturbances in the flow field inside the crew compartment(FFICC)of a truck-mounted howitzer during the artillery firing. This overpressure is the primary factor preventing personnel from firing artillery within the cab.To investigate the overpressure characteristics of the FFICC,a foreign trade equipment model was used as the research object, and a numerical model was established to analyze the propagation of muzzle blast from the muzzle to the interior of the crew compartment under extreme firing condition. For comparative verification, the muzzle blast experiment included overpressure data from both the flow field outside the crew compartment(FFOCC)and the FFICC,as well as the acceleration data of the crew compartment structure(Str-CC).The research findings demonstrate that the overpressure-time curves of the FFICC exhibit multi-peak characteristics, while the pressure wave shows no significant discontinuity. The enclosed nature of the cab hinders the dissipation of pressure wave energy within the FFICC,leading to sustained high-amplitude overpressure. The frameskin structure helps attenuate the impact of muzzle blast on the FFICC.Conversely, local high overpressure caused by the convex or concave features of the cab's exterior significantly amplifies the overpressure amplitude within the FFICC. 展开更多

The propagation characteristics of the amplitude of the blasting seismic wave under the conditions of various topographies are approached by means of experiments. Some factors affecting the effects of quake insulation groove, such as the size, the depth and the position of the quake insulation groove, are studied. The amplitudes of the blasting seismic waves under the conditions of the different sizes of the quake insulation groove are measured. According to the experiments, the effects of the quake insulation groove are related to the position, the distance, the energy of the explosion source and the size of the quake insulation groove itself. The farther it is from the explosion source, the smaller the energy is. The lower its position is and the larger its size is, the more remarkable the effects of the quake insulation groove are. 展开更多

The rock-breaking mechanism and effect of confined blasting were analysed by blasting and impact dynamic mechanics, fluid dynamic mechanics, fracture mechanics as well as blasting experiment. The results showed that the fracturing of surrounding rock in confined blasting condition is the result of coaction of rock pre-cracking by shock wave and stress wave and the continuing expanding crackenhancement of confined medium, and the model of crack development of borehole surrounding rock in confined blasting condition was established. This study acquired the damage range of surrounding rock under the action of shock wave and stress wave, as well as the crack development characteristics of surrounding rock after the wedge-in confined medium into the crack space. Deep-hole confined blasting experiment on large rock showed that the high-efficient utilisation of in-hole explosive was achieved and the safety of rock blasting operation was ensured. Safe static rock-breaking under the action of high-efficient explosive blasting was achieved as well as the unification of super dynamic load of explosive blasting and static rock-breaking of water medium. 展开更多

Blasting is the most cost effective methodology to break rock for mining or civil engineering applications.A good production blast will break only the rock that is needed to be removed, leaving the host rock with minimal damage. The control of rock damage due to blasting is very important when it comes to mine or construction design, safety, and cost.Damage to the host rock due to a production blast could result in failures, overbreak and unstable ground.Knowing how far the fractures generated by a production blast will go into the host rock is a valuable tool for engineers to design a safe highwall while keeping the actual excavation close to the design.Currently, there are several methods available to predict damage due to blasting. The accuracy of many of these methods is questionable, and in most cases, the methodologies over predict the results. This often leads to inefficient mines and poor construction works. When the current methodologies are reviewed, each one presents sound approaches, but in many cases they also lack consideration of other variables that, according to the authors, need to be included when predicting blast damage. This paper presents a practical methodology to assess the rock damage from blasting by combining other methodologies. The proposed method allows consideration of more variables when compared to available methods, resulting in a more accurate rock damage assessment. The method uses the estimation of the generated levels of peak particle velocity with the distance from a production blast presented by Persson and Holmberg, the peak particle velocity damage ranges proposed by Forsyth and the relationship between the static compressive strength and dynamic compressive strength of rocks from Liu.The new methodology was validated using the data published in a large-scale study performed in granite by Siskind. 展开更多

Drilling and blasting are the two most significant operations in open pit mines that play a crucial role in downstream stages. While previous research has focused on optimizing these operations as two separate parts or merely in a specific parameter, this paper proposes a system dynamic model(SDM) for drilling and blasting operations as an interactive system. In addition, some technical and economic uncertainties such as rock density, uniaxial compressive strength, bit life and operating costs are considered in this system to evaluate the different optimization results. For this purpose, Vensim simulation software is utilized as a powerful dynamic tool for both modelling and optimizing under deterministic and uncertain conditions. It is concluded that an integrated optimization as opposed to the deterministic approach can be efficiently achieved. This however is dependent on the parameters that are considered as uncertainties. 展开更多

The paper proposes a new empirical correlation designed to complement the‘‘site laws"currently used to evaluate the attenuation in the rock masses of vibrations induced by rock blasting. The formula contains a deformed exponential known as the K-exponential,which seems to well represent a large number of both natural and artificial phenomena ranging from astrophysics to quantum mechanics, with some extension in the field of economics and finance.Experimental validation of the formula was performed via the analysis of vibration data covering a number of case studies, which differed in terms of both operation and rock type.A total of 12 experimental cases were analysed and the proposed formulation exhibited a good performance in 11 of them.In particular, the proposed law, which was built using blast test data, produced very good approximations of the points representing the vibration measurements and would thus be useful in organising production blasts. However, the developed formula was found to work less well when a correlation obtained for a given site was applied to another presenting similar types of rocks and operations, and thus should not be employed in the absence of measurements from test data. 展开更多

One of the most important characters of blasting,a basic step of surface mining,is rock fragmentation because it directly effects on the costs of drilling and economics of the subsequent operations of loading, hauling and crushing in mines.Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system(ANFIS)and radial basis function(RBF)show potentials for modeling the behavior of complex nonlinear processes such as those involved in fragmentation due to blasting of rocks. We developed ANFIS and RBF methods for modeling of sizing of rock fragmentation due to bench blasting by estimation of 80%passing size(K_(80))of Golgohar iron mine of Sirjan.Iran.Comparing the results of ANFIS and RBF models shows that although the statistical parameters RBF model is acceptable but ANFIS proposed model is superior and also simpler because ANFIS model is constructed using only two input parameters while seven input parameters used for construction of RBF model. 展开更多

According to explosion dynamics and elastic wave theory, the models of particle vibration velocity for simultaneous blasting and milliseeond blasting are built. In the models, influential factors such as delay interval and charge quantity, are considered. The calculated vibration velocity is compared with the field test results, which shows that the theoretical values are close to the experimental ones. Meanwhile, the particle vibration velocity decreases quickly with time due to the damping of rock mass and has a harmonic motion, and the particle vibration velocity of millisecond blasting has short interval. The superposition of particle vibration velocities may reduce vibration because of wave interference, or magnify the surrounding rock response to the blastinginduced vibration. 展开更多

The typical development of total volumetric change in the focal areas of seismic events, corresponding to destress blasting,is characterized as an explosive phase followed by an implosive phase and with alternating additional phases following on from that.In a few cases,a non-typical development of volumetric change was identified, where the first phase was implosive and the second phase, explosive. This development is mainly typical for induced seismic events recorded during mining, not for destress blasting.Seismic events were recorded during longwall mining in the Czech part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, where the destress blasting technique is used as a rockburst prevention active measure.Kinematic source processes in the focal areas of selected seismic events were analyzed by the seismic moment tensor inversion method,as well as by studying geomechanical rock mass conditions at the localities of the seismic events. The main goal of the analysis was to attempt to identify the reasons for non-typical development of volumetric changes in these cases.Volumetric changes were analyzed for seismic events with energy greater than 104 J,recorded in the period of time from 1993 to 2009(1109 events).80%(891)of the recorded seismic events were induced seismic events that were registered during longwall mining and 20%(218)corresponded to destress blasting events.Research shows that the main reason for the non-typical development of volumetric changes in the focal areas of seismic events is an association with destress blasting in the rock mass, which is very close to rock mass overstressing. The detonation of explosives in boreholes, which would dominate the first phase of volumetric changes, probably obscured stress release in the rock mass,as manifested in the first implosion phase of the volumetric changes in this case. 展开更多

Destress blasting is a rockburst control technique where highly stressed rock is blasted to reduce the local stress and stiffness of the rock, thereby reducing its burst proneness. The technique is commonly practiced in deep hard rock mines in burst prone developments,as well as in sill or crown pillars which become burst-prone as the orebody is extracted.Large-scale destressing is a variant of destress blasting where panels are created parallel to the orebody strike with a longhole, fanning blast pattern from cross cut drifts situated in the host rock. The aim of panel destressing is to reduce the stress concentration in the ore blocks or pillars to be mined. This paper focuses on the large-scale destress blasting program conducted at Vale's Copper Cliff Mine(CCM)in Ontario,Canada. The merits of panel destressing are examined through field measurements of mining induced stress changes in the pillar. The destressing mechanism is simulated with a rock fragmentation factor(a)and stress reduction/dissipation factor(b).A 3D model is built and validated with measured induced stress changes. It is shown that the best correlation between the numerical model and field measurements is obtained when the combination of a and b indicates that the blast causes high fragmentation(a=0.05)and high stress release(b=0.95)in the destress panel. It is demonstrated that the burst proneness of the ore blocks in the panel stress shadow is reduced in terms of the brittle shear ratio(BSR)and the burst potential index(BPI). 展开更多

There are several empirical methods to predict flyrock. Low performance of such models is due to the complexity of flyrock analysis. Existence of various effective parameters and their unknown relationships are the main reasons for inaccuracy of the empirical models. Presently, the application of new approaches such as artificial intelligence is highly recommended. In this paper, an attempt has been made to predict flyrock in blasting operations of Soungun Copper Mine, Iran incorporating rock properties and blast design parameters using support vector machine (SVM) method. To investigate the suitability of this approach, the predictions by SVM have been compared with multivariate regression analysis (MVRA), too. Coefficient of determination (CoD) and mean absolute error (MAE) were taken as performance measures. It was found that CoD between measured and predicted flyrock was 0.948 and 0.440 by SVM and MVRA, respectively, whereas MAE between measured and predicted flyrock was 3.11 and 7.74 by SVM and MVRA, respectively. 展开更多

Surface mines continue to implement highwalls for several reasons, such as increasing recovery, improving margins, and justifying higher stripping ratios. Highwall stability is a complex issue that is dependent upon a variety of mining and geologic factors, and a safe design is necessary for a successful surface operation. To improve highwall stability, it is important to understand the connection between local geology and blasting. Explosives are employed throughout the mining industry for primary rock breakage. There are a number of controlled blasting techniques that can be implemented to improve highwall stability. These include line drilling, smooth wall blasting, trim blasting, buffer blasting, air decking, and presplitting. Each of these techniques have associated advantages and disadvantages. Understanding local geology is necessary for selecting the appropriate controlled blasting technique. Furthermore, understanding the limitations and conditions for successful implementation of each technique is necessary. A discussion of the impact of geologic conditions on highwall stability is provided. Additionally, discussion is provided for the successful incorporation of the controlled blasting techniques listed above, and the associated mining and geologic factors that influence the selection and design of controlled blasting plans. Finally, a new methodology is proposed. 展开更多

Interlaid rock is an important component in the construction of neighborhood tunnels that supports and reinforces the area between two tunnels. However, the blasting load during excavation can sometimes damage the interlaid rock and threaten the stability of a tunnel’s structure. This paper presents a case study of the small clearance section of the Liantang highway tunnel project in Shenzhen,China, where the minimum distance between the two tunnels involved is only 0.5 m.To reduce the damage to the interlaid rock caused by blasting loads,we proposed a four-part excavation method with a vibrationcushioning rock layer in the following tunnel of neighborhood tunnels.Numerical simulation was used to model the damage prevention mechanism of the vibration-cushioning rock layer and to better understand the propagation of cracks in the interlaid rock.Furthermore, based on the simulation results, combined microseismic controlled-blasting technology was implemented, using innovative blasting patterns combined with different charge structures and blasting equipment designed according to the varying thickness of the interlaid rock. Finally, this implementation succeeded in protecting interlaid rock during blasting operations. 展开更多
