Investigation of precursor criterion of coal dynamic instability from energy perspective

This study investigates the instability characteristics of dynamic disasters resulting from disruption caused by extracting resources underground. Utilizing the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system, the dynamic response mechanism of coal energy evolution is examined, and the energy instability criterion is established. The validity of the instability criterion is explored from the standpoint of damage progression. The results demonstrate that the energy conversion mechanism undergoes a fundamental alternation under impact disturbance. Moreover, the energy release rate as well as the energy dissipation rate undergo comparable changes across distinct levels of impact disturbance. The distinction between the energy release rate and the energy dissipation rate (DRD) increases as coal mass deformation grows. Prior to coal facing instability and failure, the DRD experienced an inflection point followed by a sharp decrease. In conjunction with the discussion on the damage evolution, the physical and mechanical significance of DRD remains clear, which can essentially describe the whole impact loading process. The phenomenon that the inflection point appears and DRD subsequently suddenly decreases can be employed as the energy criterion prior to the failure of instability. Furthermore, this paper provides significant reference for the prediction of dynamic instability of coal under dynamic disturbance. 展开更多

Mechanical response and impact tendency index correction of gangue-coal combined structure

To investigate the mechanical response during failure and the impact tendency characteristics of gangue-coal combined structure,uniaxial compression tests were conducted on nine groups of combined structures,each with varying gangue thicknesses and positions.The response patterns of compressive strength,elastic modulus,pre-peak accumulated energy,elastic energy index,and impact energy index were systematically analyzed.Furthermore,a new index for evaluating the impact tendency of gangue-containing coal was proposed,and its effectiveness was verified.The findings are as follows:(1)As the gangue thickness increases,both the compressive strength and the pre-peak energy of the combined structure decrease,whereas the elastic modulus increases accordingly.When the gangue is located in the lower middle position,the combined structure exhibits the lowest compressive strength and elastic modulus but the highest pre peak energy.(2)As the gangue shifts toward the middle position of the combined structure,the failure mode gradually transitions from comple te“crushing”failure to an incomplete“point-type”failure.As gangue thickness further increases,the failure region evolves from overall failure to localized failure,with the degree of failure shifting from complete to incomplete.The K_(crc)value corresponding to“crushing”complete failure is higher and has a stronger impact tendency compared to“point-type”incomplete failure.(3)The proposed comprehensive impact instability evaluation index K_(crc)for the gangue-coal combined structure has shown a significant positive correlation with compressive strength(R_(c))and impact energy index(K_(E)),further verifyi ng its rationality in comprehensively assessing the impact tendency of gangue-containing coal bodies.Applying this index to the evaluation of gangue-containing coal seams provides a more accurate reflection of their impact tendency compared with the residual energy index,which has a wide range of potential applications and practical significance. 展开更多

By considering the joint effects of the Kelvin-Helmholtz(KH) and Rayleigh-Taylor(RT) instabilities, this paper presents an interpretation of the wavy patterns that occur in explosive welding. It is assumed that the elasticity of the material at the interface effectively determines the wavelength, because explosive welding is basically a solid-state welding process. To this end, an analytical model of elastic hydrodynamic instabilities is proposed, and the most unstable mode is selected in the solid phase. Similar approaches have been widely used to study the interfacial behavior of solid metals in high-energy-density physics. By comparing the experimental and theoretical results, it is concluded that thermal softening,which significantly reduces the shear modulus, is necessary and sufficient for successful welding. The thermal softening is verified by theoretical analysis of the increase in temperature due to the impacting and sliding of the flyer and base plates, and some experimental observations are qualitatively validated.In summary, the combined effect of the KH and RT instabilities in solids determines the wavy morphology, and our theoretical results are in good qualitative agreement with experimental and numerical observations. 展开更多

High-resolution flow field data has important applications in meteorology,aerospace engineering,high-energy physics and other fields.Experiments and numerical simulations are two main ways to obtain high-resolution flow field data,while the high experiment cost and computing resources for simulation hinder the specificanalysis of flow field evolution.With the development of deep learning technology,convolutional neural networks areused to achieve high-resolution reconstruction of the flow field.In this paper,an ordinary convolutional neuralnetwork and a multi-time-path convolutional neural network are established for the ablative Rayleigh-Taylorinstability.These two methods can reconstruct the high-resolution flow field in just a few seconds,and further greatlyenrich the application of high-resolution reconstruction technology in fluid instability.Compared with the ordinaryconvolutional neural network,the multi-time-path convolutional neural network model has smaller error and canrestore more details of the flow field.The influence of low-resolution flow field data obtained by the two poolingmethods on the convolutional neural networks model is also discussed. 展开更多

Underground energy and resource development,deep underground energy storage and other projects involve the global stability of multiple interconnected cavern groups under internal and external dynamic disturbances.An evaluation method of the global stability coefficient of underground caverns based on static overload and dynamic overload was proposed.Firstly,the global failure criterion for caverns was defined based on its band connection of plastic-strain between multi-caverns.Then,overloading calculation of the boundary geostress and seismic intensity on the caverns model was carried out,and the critical unstable state of multi-caverns can be identified,if the plastic-strain band appeared between caverns during these overloading processes.Thus,the global stability coefficient for the multi-caverns under static loading and earthquake was obtained based on the corresponding overloading coefficient.Practical analysis for the Yingliangbao(YLB)hydraulic caverns indicated that this method can not only effectively obtain the global stability coefficient of caverns under static and dynamic earthquake conditions,but also identify the caverns’high-risk zone of local instability through localized plastic strain of surrounding rock.This study can provide some reference for the layout design and seismic optimization of underground cavern group. 展开更多

In this paper,the kerosene/air rotating detonation engines(RDE)are numerically investigated,and the emphasis is laid on the effects of total pressures and equivalence ratios on the operation characteristics of RDE including the initiation,instabilities,and propulsive performance.A hybrid MPI t OpenMP parallel computing model is applied and it is proved to be able to obtain a more effective parallel performance on high performance computing(HPC)systems.A series of cases with the total pressure of 1 MPa,1.5 MPa,2 MPa,and the equivalence ratio of 0.9,1,1.4 are simulated.On one hand,the total pressure shows a significant impact on the instabilities of rotating detonation waves.The instability phenomenon is observed in cases with low total pressure(1 MPa)and weakened with the increase of the total pressure.The total pressure has a small impact on the detonation wave velocity and the specific impulse.On the other hand,the equivalence ratio shows a negligible influence on the instabilities,while it affects the ignition process and accounts for the detonation velocity deficit.It is more difficult to initiate rotating detonation waves directly in the lean fuel operation condition.Little difference was observed in the thrust with different equivalence ratios of 0.9,1,and 1.4.The highest specific impulse was obtained in the lean fuel cases,which is around 2700 s.The findings could provide insights into the understanding of the operation characteristics of kerosene/air RDE. 展开更多

The major project "Energy Transport Processes in the Solar-Terrestrial System" (1993-1997) sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation in China (NSFC) has been successfully completed. Prestudies relevant to the key scientific engineering program "Meridian Chain at One Hundred Twenty Degree East Multi-Station and Multi-Instrument Observatory System" have started. A new key project "Study of Auroral Magnetospheric and Ionospheric Physics" (1997-1999) sponsored by the NSFC has begun. The Space Active Experiment Program has been carrying on further.Collaborations between Chinese and international magnetospheric physicists have proceeded forward. More than 40 papers covering a variety of subjects in the magnetospheric physics were published in Chinese and international academic journals. Most of these works were supported by the NSFC. The stability of room mining coal pillars during their secondary mining for recovering coal was analyzed. An analysis was performed for the damage and instability mechanism of coal pillars recovered by the caving mining method. During the damage progression of a single room coal pillar, the shape of the stress distribution in the pillar transformed from the initial stable saddle shape to the final arch-shaped distribution of critical instability. By combining the shapes of stress distribution in the coal pillars with the ultimate strength theory, the safe-stress value of coal pillar was obtained as 11.8 MPa. The mechanism of instability of coal pillar groups recovered by the caving mining method was explained by the domino effect. Since the room coal pillars mined and recovered by the traditional caving mining method were significantly influenced by the secondary mining during recovery, the coal pillars would go through a chain-type instability failure. Because of this limitation, the method of solid backfilling was proposed for mining and recovering room coal pillars, thus changing the transfer mechanism of stress caused by the secondary mining(recovery) of coal pillars. The mechanical model of the stope in the case of backfilling and recovering room coal pillars was built. The peak stress values inside coal pillars varied with the variance of backfilling ratio when the working face was advanced by 150 m. Furthermore, when the critical backfilling ratio was 80.6%, the instability failure of coal pillars would not occur during the solid backfill mining process. By taking Bandingliang Coal Mine as an example, the coal pillars' stability of stope under this backfilling ratio was studied, and a project scheme was designed. 展开更多

In order to study the instability propagation characteristics of the liquid kerosene rotating detonation wave(RDW),a series of experimental tests were carried out on the rotating detonation combustor(RDC)with air-heater.The fuel and oxidizer are room-temperature liquid kerosene and preheated oxygenenriched air,respectively.The experimental tests keep the equivalence ratio of 0.81 and the oxygen mass fraction of 35%unchanged,and the total mass flow rate is maintained at about 1000 g/s,changing the total temperature of the oxygen-enriched air from 620 K to 860 K.Three different types of instability were observed in the experiments:temporal and spatial instability,mode transition and re-initiation.The interaction between RDW and supply plenum may be the main reason for the fluctuations of detonation wave velocity and pressure peaks with time.Moreover,the inconsistent mixing of fuel and oxidizer at different circumferential positions is related to RDW oscillate spatially.The phenomenon of single-double-single wave transition is analyzed.During the transition,the initial RDW weakens until disappears,and the compression wave strengthens until it becomes a new RDWand propagates steadily.The increased deflagration between the detonation products and the fresh gas layer caused by excessively high temperature is one of the reasons for the RDC quenching and re-initiation. 展开更多

The bending creep and its disturbance effects of red sandstone rock beam and oil shale rock beam were studied by adopting the self-developed gravitation level style rock creep test machine and bending creep test system,and the constitutive equations were established.It is found that fracture morphology of rock beams under no disturbance load is regular,cracking position of fractures is on part of loading concentration,the crack starts from a neutral plane.However,fracture morphology of rock beams under disturbance load is irregular,cracking position of fractures deviates from a neutral plane.Delayed instability of rock beam occurs for some time under constant disturbance load.When disturbance load is beyond a certain range,suddenly instability of occurs rock beam in a certain time.The results show that there is a guiding significance for creep stability in the geotechnical engineering fields. 展开更多

Homogeneity and heterogeneity are two totally different concepts in nature.At the particle length scale,rocks exhibit strong heterogeneity in their constituents and porosities.When the heterogeneity of porosity obeys the random uniform distribution,both the mean value and the variance of porosities in the heterogeneous porosity field can be used to reflect the overall heterogeneous characteristics of the porosity field.The main purpose of this work is to investigate the effects of porosity heterogeneity on chemical dissolution front instability in fluid-saturated rocks by the computational simulation method.The related computational simulation results have demonstrated that:1) since the propagation speed of a chemical dissolution front is inversely proportional to the difference between the final porosity and the mean value of porosities in the initial porosity field,an increase in the extent of the porosity heterogeneity can cause an increase in the mean value of porosities in the initial porosity field and an increase in the propagation speed of the chemical dissolution front.2) An increase in the variance of porosities in the initial porosity field can cause an increase in the instability probability of the chemical dissolution front in the fluid-saturated rock.3) The greater the mean value of porosities in the initial porosity field,the quicker the irregular morphology of the chemical dissolution front changes in the supercritical chemical dissolution systems.This means that the irregular morphology of a chemical dissolution front grows quicker in a porosity field of heterogeneity than it does in that of homogeneity when the chemical dissolution system is at a supercritical stage. 展开更多

A mechanical model for strain softening pillar is proposed considering the characteristics of progressive shear failure and strain localization. The pillar undergoes elastic, strain softening and slabbing stages. In the elastic stage, vertical compressive stress and deformation at upper end of pillar are uniform, while in the strain softening stage there appears nonuniform due to occurrence of shear bands, leading to the decrease of load-carrying capacity. In addition, the size of failure zone increases in the strain softening stage and reaches its maximum value when slabbing begins. In the latter two stages, the size of elastic core always decreases. In the slabbing stage, the size of failure zone remains a constant and the pillar becomes thinner. Total deformation of the pillar is derived by linearly elastic Hookes law and gradient-dependent plasticity where thickness of localization band is determined according to the characteristic length. Post-peak stiffness is proposed according to analytical solution of averaged compressive stress-average deformation curve. Instability criterion of the pillar and roof strata system is proposed analytically (using) instability condition given by Salamon. It is found that the constitutive parameters of material of pillar, the geometrical size of pillar and the number of shear bands influence the stability of the system; stress gradient controls the starting time of slabbing, however it has no influence on the post-peak stiffness of the pillar. 展开更多

In this work, the effect of various effective dimensionless numbers and moisture contents on initiation of instability in combustion of moisty organic dust is calculated. To have reliable model, effect of thermal radiation is taken into account. One- dimensional flame structure is divided into three zones: preheat zone, reaction zone and post-flame zone. To investigate pulsating characteristics of flame, governing equations are rewritten in dimensionless space-time ((, r/, ~) coordinates. By solving these newly achieved governing equations and combining them, which is completely discussed in body of article, a new expression is obtained. By solving this equation, it is possible to predict initiation of instability in organic dust flame. According to the obtained results by increasing Lewis number, threshold of instability happens sooner. On the other hand, pulsating is postponed by increasing Damk6hler number, pyrolysis temperature or moisture content. Also, by considering thermal radiation effect, burning velocity predicted by our model is closer to experimental results. 展开更多

The PnP problem is a widely used technique for pose determination in computer vision community,and finding out geometric conditions of multiple solutions is the ultimate and most desirable goal of the multi-solution analysis,which is also a key research issue of the problem.In this paper,we prove that given 3 control points,if the camera's optical center lies on the so-called“danger cylinder”and is enough far from the supporting plane of control points,the corresponding P3P problem must have 3 positive solutions.This result can bring some new insights into a better understanding of the multi-solution problem.For example,it is shown in the literature that the solution of the P3P problem is instable if the optical center lies on this danger cylinder,we think such occurrence of triple-solution is the primary source of this instability. 展开更多

Many scientific and engineering problems need to use numerical methods and algorithms to obtain computational simulation results because analytical solutions are seldom available for them.The chemical dissolution-front instability problem in fluid-saturated porous rocks is no exception.Since this kind of instability problem has both the conventional(i.e.trivial)and the unconventional(i.e.nontrivial)solutions,it is necessary to examine the effects of different numerical algorithms,which are used to solve chemical dissolution-front instability problems in fluid-saturated porous rocks.Toward this goal,two different numerical algorithms associated with the commonly-used finite element method are considered in this paper.In the first numerical algorithm,the porosity,pore-fluid pressure and acid/solute concentration are selected as basic variables,while in the second numerical algorithm,the porosity,velocity of pore-fluid flow and acid/solute concentration are selected as basic variables.The particular attention is paid to the effects of these two numerical algorithms on the computational simulation results of unstable chemical dissolution-front propagation in fluid-saturated porous rocks.The related computational simulation results have demonstrated that:1)the first numerical algorithm associated with the porosity-pressure-concentration approach can realistically simulate the evolution processes of unstable chemical dissolution-front propagation in chemical dissolution systems.2)The second numerical algorithm associated with the porosity-velocity-concentration approach fails to simulate the evolution processes of unstable chemical dissolution-front propagation.3)The extra differential operation is the main source to result in the failure of the second numerical algorithm. 展开更多

The instable combustion or oscillation combustion which occurs in three high capacity solid rocket motors using high energy composite propellant with finocyl grain is studied. The reasons of the acoustic combustion instability are also discussed. Three engineering methods that can eliminate combustion instability are proposed and discussed. The study shows that the combustion instability mainly depends on the propellant grain shape and nozzle structure. Some measures to reduce the acoustic energy and mass generation rate of combustion gas can be adopted. The test results indicate that the modified rocket motors can significantly eliminate the instable combustion and improve the motor internal ballistic performance. 展开更多

To study the effect of interface behaviour on the mechanical properties and damage evolution of PBX under combined tension-shear loading, the present work establishes the numerical model of a PBX three-phase hybrid system, which introduces a nonlinear plastic damage cohesion model to study the mechanical response and damage process. The parameters in the model were fitted and calibrated.Taking the crack growth rate as the feature, the damage state in each stage was determined, and the damage instability criterion was given. The effects of interfacial tensile strength and shear strength on the damage process of PBX were studied. On this basis, serrated and hemispherical structures interface of PBX has been developed, which affects the damage process and instability during the loading process.The results indicate that damage state response of PBX experiences the process of stable load bearing,unstable propagation, and complete failure. At the critical moment of instability, the overall equivalent effective strain of material reaches 3024 με and instability loading displacement reaches 0.39 mm. The increase of interfacial tensile strength and shear strength significantly inhibits the damage of PBX. The effect of interfacial shear strength on critical instability of PBX is approximately 1.7 times that of the interfacial tensile strength. Further, interface opening along the normal direction is the main damage form at the interface. Serrated and hemispherical rough interfaces can significantly inhibit propagation of cracks, and the load bearing capacity is improved by 22% and 9.7%, respectively. Appropriate improvement of the roughness of the interface structure can effectively improve the mechanical properties. It is significantly important to have a better understanding of deformation, damage and failure mechanisms of PBX and to improve our predictive ability. 展开更多

The challenge and control problems of static unstable missiles are presented. The steady-state benefits of static instability are illustrated, while the corresponding control challenge is described both by the characteristic lag of airframe and the increment of necessary control usage. Control limitation led by unstable zero-pole pair is analyzed for preliminary design and evaluation. Linear control strategy is examined wherein two and three loop acceleration autopilots with different control usages are developed using an optimal control approach combined with frequency domain constraint. The weights selection and relation with system performance are detailed. Then the nonlinear backstepping recursive method is detailed to determine how well it is able to follow command and its engineering feasibility. The results show that a static unstable missile is controllable, while the actuator bandwidth is the crucial limited factor. There should be a compromise between overall performance and actuator payment. 展开更多

This paper describes a design optimization study of the composite egg-shaped submersible pressure hull employing optimization and finite element analysis(FEA)tools as a first attempt to provide an optimized design of the composite egg-shaped pressure hull for manufacturing or further investigations.A total of 15 optimal designs for the composite egg-shaped pressure hull under hydrostatic pressure are obtained in terms of fibers’angles and the number of layers for 5 lay-up arrangements and 3 unidirectional(UD)composite materials.The optimization process is performed utilizing a genetic algorithm and FEA in ANSYS.The minimization of the buoyancy factor eB:FT is selected as the objective for the optimization under constraints on both material failure and buckling strength.Nonlinear buckling analysis is conducted for one optimal design considering both geometric nonlinearity and imperfections.A sensitivity study is also conducted to further investigate the influence of the design variables on the optimal design of the egg-shaped pressure hull. 展开更多
