Atomic origin of minor alloying element effect on glass forming ability of metallic glass

The glass-forming ability(GFA)of metallic glasses is a key scientific challenge in their development and application,with compositional dependence playing a crucial role.Experimental studies have demonstrated that the addition of specific minor elements can greatly enhance the GFA of parent alloys,yet the underlying mechanism remains unclear.In this study,we use the ZrCuAl system as a model to explore how the addition of minor Al influences the crystallization rate by modulating the properties of the crystal-liquid interface,thereby affecting the GFA.The results reveal that the minor addition of Al significantly reduces the crystal growth rate,a phenomenon not governed by particle density fluctuations at the interface.The impact of minor element additions extends beyond a modest increase in crystal-unfavorable motifs in the bulk supercooled liquid.More importantly,it leads to a significant enrichment of these motifs at the crystal-supercooled liquid interface,forming a dense topological network of crystal-unfavorable structures that effectively prevent the growth of the crystalline interface and enhance GFA.Our results provide valuable insights for the design and development of high-performance metallic glasses. 展开更多

目的 分析SATB2基因新剪接位点变异导致GLASS综合征一家系的临床和分子遗传学特征,为遗传咨询提供参考。方法 收集和分析GLASS综合征一家系2例患者临床资料;对先证者及其父母进行全外显子组(whole-exome sequencing,WES)和全基因组拷贝... 目的 分析SATB2基因新剪接位点变异导致GLASS综合征一家系的临床和分子遗传学特征,为遗传咨询提供参考。方法 收集和分析GLASS综合征一家系2例患者临床资料;对先证者及其父母进行全外显子组(whole-exome sequencing,WES)和全基因组拷贝数变异(copy number variation,CNV)的二代测序;使用基于人工智能(AI)模型的突变位点剪接预测工具RNA Splicer对变异进行预测评估。通过国内外文献数据库,回顾1989年1月至2023年9月发表的GLASS综合征相关文献。结果 该家系先证者及其母亲有一致的表型:主要临床表现为智力低下,语言发育严重迟缓,社交能力差;面部畸形(长脸、鼻梁突出、球状鼻尖、人中扁平、小嘴、低位耳)和弯曲指。WES测序显示先证者及其母亲携带SATB2 c.1543-1G>A新剪接位点变异,先证者父亲未携带该变异。国内外关于该疾病的报道共47篇,其中9例患者为剪接位点变异。结论 SATB2基因的新剪接位点变异是该家系患者的致病原因,扩大了SATB2基因的变异谱,为该家系的遗传咨询和产前诊断提供依据。 展开更多

Amorphous solids exhibit scale-free avalanches,even under small external loading,and thus can work as suitable systems to study critical behavior and universality classes.The abundance of scale-free avalanches in the entire elastic tension regime of bulk metallic glass(BMG)samples has been experimentally observed using acoustic emission(AE)measurements.In this work,we compare the statistics of avalanches with those of earthquakes,and find that they both follow the Gutenberg–Richter law in the statistics of energies and Omori’s law of aftershock rates,and share the same characteristics in the distribution of recurrence times.These resemblances encourage us to propose the term“glass-quake”to describe avalanches in elastically loaded BMGs.Furthermore,our work echoes the potential universality of critical behavior in disordered physical systems from atomic to planetary scales,and motivates the use of elastic loaded BMGs as valuable laboratory simulators of seismic dynamics. 展开更多

Melt treatment is well known to have an important influence on the properties of metallic glasses(MGs).However,for the MGs quenched from different melt temperatures with a quartz tube,the underlying physical origin responsible for the variation of properties remains poorly understood.In the present work,we systematically studied the influence of melt treatment on the thermal properties of a Zr50Cu36Al14 glass-forming alloy and unveiled the microscopic origins.Specifically,we quenched the melt at different temperatures ranging from 1.1Tl to 1.5Tl(Tl is the liquidus temperature)to obtain melt-spun MG ribbons and investigated the variation of thermal properties of the MGs upon heating.We found that glass transition temperature,Tg,increases by as much as 36 K,and the supercooled liquid region disappears in the curve of differential scanning calorimetry when the melt is quenched at a high temperature up to 1.5Tl.The careful chemical analyses indicate that the change in glass transition behavior originates from the incorporation of oxygen and silicon in the molten alloys.The incorporated oxygen and silicon can both enhance the interactions between atoms,which renders the cooperative rearrangements of atoms difficult,and thus enhances the kinetic stability of the MGs. 展开更多

The alteration in surface color of metallic glasses(MGs)holds great significance in the context of microstructuredesign and commercial utility.It is essential to accurately describe the structures that are formed during the laser and colorseparation processes in order to develop practical laser coloring applications.Due to the high oxidation sensitivity of Labasedmetallic glass,it can broaden the color range but make it more complex.Structure coloring by laser processing on thesurface of La-based metallic glass can be conducted after thermoplastic forming.It is particularly important to clarify therole of structure and composition in the surface coloring process.The aim is to study the relationship between amorphoussurface structural color,surface geometry,and oxide formation by laser processing in metallic glasses.The findings revealedthat the periodic structure primarily determines the surface color at laser energy densities below 1.0 J/mm^(2).In contrast,thesurface color predominantly depends on the proportion of oxides that are formed when energy densities exceed 1.0 J/mm^(2).Consequently,this study provides a novel concept for the fundamental investigation of laser coloring and establishes a newavenue for practical application. 展开更多

Solid waste recycling is an economically sound strategy for preserving the environment,safeguarding natural resources,and diminishing the reliance on raw material consumption.Geopolymer technology offers a significant advantage by enabling the reuse and recycling of diverse materials.This research assesses how including silica fume and glass powder enhances the impact resistance of ultra-high-performance geopolymer concrete(UHPGC).In total,18 distinct mixtures were formulated by substituting ground granulated blast furnace slag with varying proportions of silica fume and glass powder,ranging from 10%to 40%.Similarly,for each of the mixtures above,steel fibre was added at a dosage of 1.5%to address the inherent brittleness of UHPGC.The mixtures were activated by combining sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solution to generate geopolymer binders.The specimens were subjected to drop-weight impact testing,wherein an examination was carried out to evaluate various parameters,including flowability,density at fresh and hardened state,compressive strength,impact numbers indicative of cracking and failure occurrences,ductility index,and analysis of failure modes.Additionally,the variations in the impact test outcomes were analyzed using the Weibull distribution,and the findings corresponding to survival probability were offered.Furthermore,the microstructure of UHPGC was scrutinized through scanning electron microscopy.Findings reveal that the specimens incorporating glass powder exhibited lower cracking impact number values than those utilizing silica fume,with reductions ranging from 18.63%to 34.31%.Similarly,failure impact number values decreased from 8.26%to 28.46%across glass powder contents.The maximum compressive and impact strength was recorded in UHPGC,comprising 10%silica fume with fibres. 展开更多

Density of excess modes below the first phonon mode in four-dimensional glasses

Glasses are known to possess low-frequency excess modes beyond the Debye prediction.For decades,it has been assumed that evolution of low-frequency density of excess modes D(ω) with frequency ω follows a power-law scaling:D(ω)~ω~γ.However,it remains debated on the value of γ at low frequencies below the first phonon-like mode in finitesize glasses.Early simulation studies reported γ=4 at low frequencies in two-(2D),three-(3D),and four-dimensional(4D)glasses,whereas recent observations in 2D and 3D glasses suggested γ=3.5 in a lower-frequency regime.It is uncertain whether the low-frequency scaling of D(ω)~ω^(3.5) could be generalized to 4D glasses.Here,we conduct numerical simulation studies of excess modes at frequencies below the first phonon-like mode in 4D model glasses.It is found that the system size dependence of D(ω) below the first phonon-like mode varies with spatial dimensions:D(ω) increases in2D glasses but decreases in 3D and 4D glasses as the system size increases.Furthermore,we demonstrate that the ω^(3.5)scaling,rather than the ω~4 scaling,works in the lowest-frequency regime accessed in 4D glasses,regardless of interaction potentials and system sizes examined.Therefore,our findings in 4D glasses,combined with previous results in 2D and 3D glasses,suggest a common low-frequency scaling of D(ω)~ ω^3.5) below the first phonon-like mode across different spatial dimensions,which would inspire further theoretical studies. 展开更多

One hallmark of glasses is the existence of excess vibrational modes at low frequenciesωbeyond Debye’s prediction.Numerous studies suggest that understanding low-frequency excess vibrations could help gain insight into the anomalous mechanical and thermodynamic properties of glasses.However,there is still intensive debate as to the frequency dependence of the population of low-frequency excess vibrations.In particular,excess modes could hybridize with phonon-like modes and the density of hybridized excess modes has been reported to follow D_(exc)(ω)~ω^(2)in 2D glasses with an inverse power law potential.Yet,the universality of the quadratic scaling remains unknown,since recent work suggested that interaction potentials could influence the scaling of the vibrational spectrum.Here,we extend the universality of the quadratic scaling for hybridized excess modes in 2D to glasses with potentials ranging from the purely repulsive soft-core interaction to the hard-core one with both repulsion and attraction as well as to glasses with significant differences in density or interparticle repulsion.Moreover,we observe that the number of hybridized excess modes exhibits a decrease in glasses with higher density or steeper interparticle repulsion,which is accompanied by a suppression of the strength of the sound attenuation.Our results indicate that the density bears some resemblance to the repulsive steepness of the interaction in influencing low-frequency properties. 展开更多

Boson peak of glasses,a THz vibrational excess compared to Debye squared-frequency law,remains mysterious in condensed-matter physics and material science.It appears in many different kinds of glassy matters and is also argued to exist in damped crystals.A consensus is that boson peak originates from the coupling of the(quasi)-localized non-phonon modes and the plane-wave-like phonon modes,but the coupling behavior is still not fully understood.In this paper,by modulating the content of localized modes and the frequencies of phonon modes,the coupling is clearly reflected in the localization and anharmonicity of low-frequency vibrational modes.The coupling enhances with increasing cooling rate and sample size.For finite sample size,phonon modes do not fully intrude into the low frequency to form a dense spectrum and they are not sufficiently coupled to the localized modes,thus there is no Debye level and boson peak is ill-defined.This suggestion remains valid in the presence of thermal motions induced by temperature,even though the anharmonicity comes into play.Our results point to the coupling of quasi-localized and phonon modes and its relation to the boson peak. 展开更多

The early stage evolution of local atomic structures in a multicomponent metallic glass during its crystallization process has been investigated via molecular dynamics simulation.It is found that the initial thermal stability and earliest stage evolution of the local atomic clusters show no strong correlation with their initial short-range orders,and this leads to an observation of a novel symmetry convergence phenomenon,which can be understood as an atomic structure manifestation of the ergodicity.Furthermore,in our system we have quantitatively proved that the crucial factor for the thermal stability against crystallization exhibited by the metallic glass is not the total amount of icosahedral clusters,but the degree of global connectivity among them. 展开更多

The increasing demand in spectroscopy and sensing calls for infrared(mid-IR)light sources.Here,we theoretically investigate nonlinear wavelength conversion of Ge_(28)Sb_(12)Se_(60)chalcogenide glass waveguide in the mid-IR spectral regime.With waveguide dispersion engineering,we predict generation of over an octave wavelength(2.8μm-5.9μm)tuning range Raman soliton self-frequency shift,over 2.5 octaves wavelength cover range supercontinuum(1.2μm-8.0μm),as well as single soliton Kerr comb generated in suspended Ge_(28)Sb_(12)Se_(60)waveguide.Our findings evidenced that Ge_(28)Sb_(12)Se_(60)chalcogenide glass waveguides can simultaneously satisfy the generation of Raman soliton self-frequency shift,supercontinuum spectrum,and Kerr frequency comb generation through dispersion engineering towards mid-IR on chip. 展开更多

Er_(20)Ho_(20)Dy_(20)Cu_(20)Ni_(20)high-entropy metallic glass exhibited excellent magnetic refrigeration material with a wide temperature range and high refrigeration capacity(RC)was reported.Er_(20)Ho_(20)Dy_(20)Cu_(20)Ni_(20)high-entropy metallic glass was observed with typical spin glass behavior around 15.5 K.In addition,we find that the magnetic entropy change(-△S_(M))originates from the sample undergoing a ferromagnetic(FM)to paramagnetic(PM)transition around 20 K.Under a field change from 0 T to 7 T,the value of maximum magnetic entropy change(-△S_(M)^(max))reaches 12.5 J/kg·K,and the corresponding value of RC reaches 487.7 J/kg in the temperature range from 6 K to 60 K.The large RC and wide temperature range make the Er_(20)Ho_(20)Dy_(20)Cu_(20)Ni_(20)high-entropy metallic glass be a promising material for application in magnetic refrigerators. 展开更多

In this paper,high-energy Ne ions were used to irradiate Zr_(63.5)Cu_(23)Al_(9)Fe_(4.5) metallic glass(MG)and crystalline W to investigate their difference in mechanical response after irradiation.The results showed that with the irradiation dose increased,the tensile micro-strain increased,nano-hardness increased from 7.11 GPa to 7.90 GPa and 8.62 GPa,Young’s modulus increased,and H3/E2 increased which indicating that the plastic deformability decreased in crystalline W.Under the same irradiation conditions,the Zr_(63.5)Cu_(23)Al_(9)Fe_(4.5) MG still maintained the amorphous structure and became more disordered despite the longer range and stronger displacement damage of Ne ions in Zr_(63.5)Cu_(23)Al_(9)Fe_(4.5) MG than in crystalline W.Unlike the irradiation hardening and embrittlement behavior of crystalline W,Zr_(63.5)Cu_(23)Al_(9)Fe_(4.5) MG showed the gradual decrease in hardness from 6.02 GPa to 5.89 GPa and 5.50 GPa,the decrease in modulus and the increase in plastic deformability with the increasing dose.Possibly,the irradiation softening and toughening phenomenon of Zr_(63.5)Cu_(23)Al_(9)Fe_(4.5) MG could provide new ideas for the design of nuclear materials. 展开更多

A new insulation packaging strategy for the stator windings of flat wire motors based on LTCC technology was studied for the first time.The study aimed to replace traditional plastic packaging methods and avoid aging issues by fabricating a novel multilayer laminated Cu coil/CaO–Li_(2)O–B_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)glass-ceramic structure.The analysis of the interface microstructure of the laminated structure revealed that the CaO–Li_(2)O–B_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)glass-ceramic matrix consisted of a crystalline phase of CaSiO_(3)and an amorphous phase of SiO_(2).The interface between the Cu coil and CaO–Li_(2)O–B_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)glass-ceramic exhibited good bonding with no formation of secondary phases.Additionally,the strong bonding between the Cu coil and CaO–Li_(2)O–B_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)glass-ceramic was attributed to the diffusion of Cu atoms at the interface.The novel multilayer laminated structure based on LTCC technology proposed in this study can help achieve high-reliability insulation packaging for the stator windings of future high-power density and miniaturized flat wire motors. 展开更多

Recently,poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes have been attracting great attention,and efforts are currently underway to develop PEO-based composite electrolytes for next generation high performance all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.In this article,a novel sandwich structured solid-state PEO composite electrolyte is developed for high performance all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.The PEO-based composite electrolyte is fabricated by hot-pressing PEO,LiTFSI and Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) MXene nanosheets into glass fiber cloth(GFC).The as-prepared GFC@PEO-MXene electrolyte shows high mechanical properties,good electrochemical stability,and high lithium-ion migration number,which indicates an obvious synergistic effect from the microscale GFC and the nanoscale MXene.Such as,the GFC@PEO-1 wt%MXene electrolyte shows a high tensile strength of 43.43 MPa and an impressive Young's modulus of 496 MPa,which are increased by 1205%and 6048%over those of PEO.Meanwhile,the ionic conductivity of GFC@PEO-1 wt%MXene at 60℃ reaches 5.01×10^(-2) S m^(-1),which is increased by around 200%compared with that of GFC@PEO electrolyte.In addition,the Li/Li symmetric battery based on GFC@PEO-1 wt%MXene electrolyte shows an excellent cycling stability over 800 h(0.3 mA cm^(-2),0.3 mAh cm^(-2)),which is obviously longer than that based on PEO and GFC@PEO electrolytes due to the better compatibility of GFC@PEO-1 wt%MXene electrolyte with Li anode.Furthermore,the solid-state Li/LiFePO_(4) battery with GFC@PEO-1 wt%MXene as electrolyte demonstrates a high capacity of 110.2–166.1 mAh g^(-1) in a wide temperature range of 25–60C,and an excellent capacity retention rate.The developed sandwich structured GFC@PEO-1 wt%MXene electrolyte with the excellent overall performance is promising for next generation high performance all-solid-state lithium metal batteries. 展开更多

High-precision multi-focus laser sculpting of microstructured glass

Precision sculpting of glass with defined surface microstructures is vital due to the miniaturization and integration of glass-based devices,while it is still challenging as the high brittleness of glass.We here create a three-dimensional multifocus laser for glass micro-sculpting through a beam-shaping technology based on the superposition of lens and grating phase diagrams.The multi-focus laser modification in tandem with chemical etching enables the fabrication of glass microstructures with highly adjustable profiles.Refractive-index-induced deviations are migrated via algorithm correction to ensure multi-focus positional accuracy.Energy un-uniformity due to equidistant laser spots arrangement is eliminated through their coordinate randomization following the target profiles.Finally,uniform laser spots with a proper point-topoint distance create connected cracks inside glass,enabling efficient etching with enhanced rates along the modified profile and the fabrication of surface microstructures.We demonstrate diverse groove arrays with profiles of trapezoid,semicircle,and triangle,revealing low roughness around 1.3μm,a high depth-width ratio of 3:1,and depth up to 300μm,which underscore broad applications such as fiber packaging. 展开更多

Multidimensional-engineering chalcogenide glasses is widely explored to construct various infrared photonic devices,with their surface as a key dimension for wavefront control.Here,we demonstrate direct patterning high-aspect-ratio microstructures on the surface of chalcogenide glasses offers an efficient and robust method to manipulate longwave infrared radiations.Despite chalcogenide glass being considered soft in terms of its mechanical properties,we successfully fabricate high-aspect-ratio micropillars with a height of 8μm using optimized deep etching process,and we demonstrate a 2-mm-diameter all-chalcogenide metalens with a numerical aperture of 0.45 on the surface of a 1.5-mm-thick As2Se3 glass.Leveraging the exceptional longwave infrared(LWIR)transparency and moderate refractive index of As2Se3 glass,the all-chalcogenide metalens produces a focal spot size of~1.39λ0 with a focusing efficiency of 47%at the wavelength of 9.78μm,while also exhibiting high-resolution imaging capabilities.Our work provides a promising route to realize easy-to-fabricate,mass-producible planar infrared optics for compact,light-weight LWIR imaging systems. 展开更多
