In this paper,a type of reinforcing structure for composite shell with single and through hole is presented. The experimental tests for the composite shells without hole, with single hole and reinforced structure, with through hole and reinforced structure subjected to hydrostatic pressure were carried out by the designed experimental test system. The mechanical responses of the composite shells under hydrostatic pressure are obtained by the high-speed camera and strain measurement. The results show that the entire deformation process of the shell can be divided into three:uniform compression,"buckling mode formation"and buckling. The"buckling mode formation"process is captured and reported for the first time. For the composite shell with single hole, the proposed reinforcing structure has a significant reinforcement effect on the shell and the buckling capacity of the shell is not weaker than the complete composite shell. For the composite shell with through hole, sealing effect can be achieved by the proposed reinforcing structure, but the buckling capacity of the shell after reinforcement can only reach 77%of the original buckling capacity. 展开更多

This research addresses the growing demand for high-performance protective materials against high-velocity projectile impacts. The performance of multi-layered steel fiber-reinforced mortar(SFRM)panels with varying thicknesses and air gaps, was experimentally investigated under single and repeated impacts of 7.62×51 mm bullets fired from a distance of 50 m.The impact events were recorded using a high-speed camera at 40000 fps.Panel performance was assessed in terms of failure modes, kinetic energy absorption, spalling diameter, and percentage of back-face damage area, and weight loss. Results showed that panel configuration significantly influenced performance.Panel P10,with 70 mm SFRM thickness and 20 mm air gaps, provided the highest resistance, dissipating 5223 J of kinetic energy and preventing back-face damage. In contrast,P7,which absorbed 4476 J,presented a back damage area percentage of 8.93%after three impacts.Weight loss analysis further confirmed durability improvements, with P10 showing only 1.53%cumulative loss compared to 3.26%in P7.The inclusion of wider air gaps enhanced energy dissipation and reduced damage.Comparison between single and repeated impacts demonstrated the sustained resistance of high-performance panels, with P10 maintaining minimal degradation across three consecutive impacts. These findings highlight the potential of multi-layer SFRM panels to enhance ballistic resistance, making them suitable for military, security, and civilian protective applications requiring long-term durability. 展开更多

Basalt fibers/7075 aluminum matrix composites were studied to meet the demand of aluminum alloy drill pipes for material wear resistance. The composites with different basalt fiber additions were prepared by hot pressed sintering and hot extrusion. The mechanical properties as well as friction and wear properties of the composites were studied by microstructure analysis, tensile experiments, friction and wear experiments. The results showed that basalt fibers were oriented and uniformly distributed and led to local grain refinement in the alloy matrix. The hardness and elongation of the composites were improved. The friction coefficient of the composites increased and then decreased, and the maximum wear depth and wear amount decreased, then increased, then decreased again with the growth of basalt fiber addition.Meanwhile, the inclusion of basalt fibers mitigated the uneven wear of the extruded 7075 aluminum alloy. The value of wear depth difference of 7075-0.2BF was the smallest, and that of 7075-2.0BF was close to it.The maximum wear depth and wear volume the 7075-0.2BF and 7075-2.0BF were also the smallest. The inhibition of uneven wear by basalt fibers enhanced of wear resistance for 7075 aluminum alloy, which has reference significance for improving the performance of aluminum alloy drill pipes. 展开更多

As the core component of inertial navigation systems, fiber optic gyroscope (FOG), with technical advantages such as low power consumption, long lifespan, fast startup speed, and flexible structural design, are widely used in aerospace, unmanned driving, and other fields. However, due to the temper-ature sensitivity of optical devices, the influence of environmen-tal temperature causes errors in FOG, thereby greatly limiting their output accuracy. This work researches on machine-learn-ing based temperature error compensation techniques for FOG. Specifically, it focuses on compensating for the bias errors gen-erated in the fiber ring due to the Shupe effect. This work pro-poses a composite model based on k-means clustering, sup-port vector regression, and particle swarm optimization algo-rithms. And it significantly reduced redundancy within the sam-ples by adopting the interval sequence sample. Moreover, met-rics such as root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), bias stability, and Allan variance, are selected to evaluate the model’s performance and compensation effective-ness. This work effectively enhances the consistency between data and models across different temperature ranges and tem-perature gradients, improving the bias stability of the FOG from 0.022 °/h to 0.006 °/h. Compared to the existing methods utiliz-ing a single machine learning model, the proposed method increases the bias stability of the compensated FOG from 57.11% to 71.98%, and enhances the suppression of rate ramp noise coefficient from 2.29% to 14.83%. This work improves the accuracy of FOG after compensation, providing theoretical guid-ance and technical references for sensors error compensation work in other fields. 展开更多

Fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) composite materials are heterogeneous and anisotropic materials that do not exhibit plastic deformation. They have been used in a wide range of contemporary applications particularly in space and aviation, automotive, maritime and manufacturing of sports equipment. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) composite materials, among other fiber reinforced materials, have been increasingly replacing conventional materials with their excellent strength and low specific weight properties. Their manufacturability in varying combinations with customized strength properties, also their high fatigue, toughness and high temperature wear and oxidation resistance capabilities render these materials an excellent choice in engineering applications. In the present review study,a literature survey was conducted on the machinability properties and related approaches for CFRP and GFRP composite materials. As in the machining of all anisotropic and heterogeneous materials, failure mechanisms were also reported in the machining of CFRP and GFRP materials with both conventional and modern manufacturing methods and the results of these studies were obtained by use of variance analysis(ANOVA),artificial neural networks(ANN) model, fuzzy inference system(FIS),harmony search(HS) algorithm, genetic algorithm(GA),Taguchi's optimization technique,multi-criteria optimization, analytical modeling, stress analysis, finite elements method(FEM),data analysis, and linear regression technique. Failure mechanisms and surface quality is discussed with the help of optical and scanning electron microscopy, and profilometry. ANOVA,GA,FEM,etc. are used to analyze and generate predictive models. 展开更多

The multiple cracking and deflection hardening performance of polyvinyl alcohol fiber reinforced engineered cementitious composites(PVA-ECC)under four-point flexural loading have been investigated.Matrices with different binder combinations and W/B ratios(from 0.44 to 0.78)providing satisfactory PVA fiber dispersion were specially designed.Effect of pre-existing flaw size distribution modification on deflection hardening behavior was comparatively studied by adding 3 mm diameter polyethylene beads into the mixtures(6%by total volume).Natural flaw size distributions of composites without beads were determined by cross sectional analysis. The crack number and crack width distributions of specimens after flexural loading were characterized and the possible causes of changes in multiple cracking and deflection hardening behavior by flaw size distribution modification were discussed.Promising results from the view point of deflection hardening behavior were obtained from metakaolin incorporated and flaw size distribution modified PVA-ECCs prepared with W/B=0.53.The dual roles of W/B ratio and superplasticizer content on flaw size distribution, cracking potential and fiber-matrix bond behavior were evaluated.Flaw size distribution modification is found beneficial in terms of ductility improvement at an optimized W/B ratio. 展开更多

Continuous carbon fiber reinforced copper matrix composites with 70%(volume fraction) of carbon fibers prepared by squeeze casting technique have been used for investigation of the coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) and thermal conductivity.Thermo-physical properties have been measured in both, longitudinal and transversal directions to the fiber orientation. The results showed that Cf/Cu composites may be a suitable candidate for heat sinks because of its good thermo-physical properties e.g.the low CTE(4.18×10-6/K) in longitudinal orientation and(14.98×10-6/K) in transversal orientation at the range of 20-50℃,a good thermal conductivity(87.2 W/m·K) in longitudinal orientation and(58.2 W/m·K) in transversal orientation.Measured CTE and thermal conductivity values are compared with those predicted by several well-known models.Eshelby model gave better results for prediction of the CTE and thermal conductivity of the unidirectional composites. 展开更多

The carbon fiber reinforced composite is a new type of composite material with an excellent property in strength and elastic modulus, and has found extensive applications in aerospace, energy, automotive industry and so on.However, this composite has a strict requirement on processing techniques, for example, brittle damage or delamination often exists in conventional processing techniques.Abrasive water jet machining technology is a new type of green machining technique with distinct advantages such as high-energy and thermal distortion free. The use of abrasive water jet technique to process carbon fiber composite materials has become a popular trend since it can significantly improve the processing accuracy and surface quality of carbon fiber composite materials. However, there are too many parameters that affect the quality of an abrasive water jet machining. At present, few studies are carried out on the parameter optimization of such a machining process, which leads to the unstable quality of surface processing. In this paper, orthogonal design of experiment and regression analysis were employed to establish the empirical model between cutting surface roughness and machining process parameters. Then a verified model was used to optimize the machining process parameters for abrasive water jet cutting carbon fiber reinforced composites. 展开更多

The design of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)revolves around the careful selection of materials that are both lightweight and robust.Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(CFRP)emerged as an ideal option for wing construction, with its mechanical qualities thoroughly investigated. In this study,we developed and optimized a conceptual UAV wing to withstand structural loads by establishing progressive composite stacking sequences, and we conducted a series of experimental characterizations on the resulting material. In the optimization phase, the objective was defined as weight reduction, while the Hashin damage criterion was established as the constraint for the optimization process. The optimization algorithm adaptively monitors regional damage criterion values, implementing necessary adjustments to facilitate the mitigation process in a cost-effective manner.Optimization of the analytical model using Simulia Abaqus~(TM)and a Python-based user-defined sub-routine resulted in a 34.7%reduction in the wing's structural weight after 45 iterative rounds. Then, the custom-developed optimization algorithm was compared with a genetic algorithm optimization. This comparison has demonstrated that, although the genetic algorithm explores numerous possibilities through hybridization, the custom-developed algorithm is more result-oriented and achieves optimization in a reduced number of steps. To validate the structural analysis, test specimens were fabricated from the wing's most critically loaded segment, utilizing the identical stacking sequence employed in the optimization studies.Rigorous mechanical testing revealed unexpectedly high compressive strength, while tensile and bending strengths fell within expected ranges. All observed failure loads remained within the established safety margins, thereby confirming the reliability of the analytical predictions. 展开更多

Glued timber structure is one of the main forms of modern wood architecture, which has gradually developed towards mid-and high-rise buildings.Glue-laminated timber(GLT)is comprised of several laminates of parallel-to-grain dimension lumber that are bonded together with durable, moisture resistant structural adhesives.GLT can be used in horizontal applications as a beam and in vertical applications as a post. So,its compressive performance has a significant impact on structural safety.Fiber reinforced polymers(FRPs)were commonly used to improve the bearing capacity of GLT components, and the structural and process parameters largely determined the reinforcement effect. This study was aimed at investigating the influence of structural and process parameters on the axial compression performance of GLT components.Three wrapping methods(middle-part,end-part and full wrapping)and three lengths(0.6,0.8,and 1.0 m)of wood post specimens were designed in this work and the axial compression performance and ductility of GLT post specimens modified by basalt fiber reinforced polymer(BFRP)were studied. The results showed that the effect of different BFRP wrapping methods on the compressive strength and elastic modulus of laminated wood was not statistically significant(P>0.05).The compressive bearing capacity of unreinforced GLT posts decreased with the increase of aspect ratio. The GLT posts with middle-part and end-part wrapping still followed this pattern, while the compressive bearing capacity of GLT posts with full wrapping showed a pattern of first decreasing and then increasing. For GLT with low aspect ratios(4.0 or 5.3),there was no correlation between the wrapping method and the compressive bearing capacity, while the compressive bearing capacity of GLT with a high aspect ratio(6.7)for middle-part,end-part and full wrapping increased by 3.5%,7.5%and 9.7%,respectively.Compared to the unreinforced group, the ultimate axial compressive strength and modulus of elasticity(MOE)of the 6-E series specimens reinforced at both ends decreased by 2.58%and 6.70%,respectively.The ultimate axial compressive strength of the 8-E specimens reinforced at both ends increased by 8.62%and the MOE decreased by 1.91%.The compressive strength of the 10-E specimens reinforced at both ends increased by 7.51%and the MOE increased by 8.14%.The failure modes of GLT with different aspects were consistent under the same BFRP wrapping, while the failure modes of GLT with the same aspect ratio were different for different BFRP wrapping methods. The ductility performance of GLT with different aspects ratio was improved by the BFRP wrapping. 展开更多

Based on the discussion about working mechanism of horizontal reinforcement and that of vertical reinforcement, respectively, the working mechanism of two-direction reinforced composite foundation was studied. The enhancing effect of horizontal reinforcement on vertical reinforced composite foundation was analyzed.A simplified calculation method for such two-direction reinforced working system was presented.A model experiment was carried out to validate the proposed method. In the experiment, geocell reinforcement worked as the horizontal reinforcement, while gravel pile composite foundation worked as the vertical reinforcement. The results show that the calculated curve is close to the measured one.The installation of geosynthetic reinforcement can increase the bearing capacity of composite foundation by nearly 68% at normal foundation settlement, which suggests that the enhancing effect by geosynthetic reinforcement should be taken into account in current design/analysis methods. 展开更多

Titanium has found extensive use in various engineering applications due to its attractive physical, mechanical, and chemical characteristics. However, titanium has relatively low hardness for use as an armour material. ZrB2 was incorporated to the Ti matrix to form a Ti-based binary composites. In this study, powder metallurgy techniques were employed to disperse the ceramic particulates throughout the matrix material then consolidated through spark plasma sintering. The composites were densified at1300 ℃, pressure of 50 MPa, and holding time of 5 min. The microstructure and phase analysis of the sintered composites was carried out using SEM and XRD, while the hardness was determined using Vickers' microhardness tester. The SEM and XRD results confirmed the presence of the TiB whiskers which renowned with the improving the hardness of titanium. The hardness of the composite with 10 wt% ZrB_2 showed the highest hardness compared to that obtained for the 5 and 15 wt% ZrB_2 composites which was 495 and 571 Hv respectively. 展开更多

The special reinforced concrete composite beam consists of a steel fiber reinforced self-stressing concrete composite layer and a reinforced concrete T-beam, and constructional bars are set up at their bonding interface. Fatigue properties of the composite beam under the action of negative moment were experimentally studied. Through inverted loading mode the load-beating state of a composite beam was simulated under the action of negative moment. With the ratios of constructional bars being 0, 0.082% and 0.164% respectively as parameters, the effects of constructional bars on the properties of composite beam, such as fatigue life, crack propagation, rigidity loss as well as damage behavior of bonding interface, were studied. The mechanism of the constructional bars on the fatigue properties of the composite beams and the restriction mechanism of crack widths and rigidity loss were analyzed. The test results show that the constructional bars can enhance the shear resistance of the bonding interface between composite layer and old concrete beam and restrict expanding of steel fiber reinforced self-stressing concrete, which are beneficial to synergistic action of composite layer and old concrete beam, to reducing the stress amplitude of bars and the crack width of composite layer, and to increasing the durability and fatigue life of the composite beam. 展开更多

To discuss the soil arching effect on the load transferring model and sharing ratios by the piles and inter-pile subsoil in the bidirectionally reinforced composite ground, the forming mechanism, mechanical behavior and its effect factors were discussed in detail. Then, the unified strength theory was introduced to set up the elastoplastic equilibrium differential equation of the subsoil under the limit equilibrium state. And from the equation, the solutions were derived with the corresponding formulas presented to calculate the earth pressure over and beneath the horizontal reinforced cushion or pillow, the stress of inter-pile subsoil and the pile-soil stress ratio. Based on the obtained solutions and measured data from an engineering project, the influence rules by the soil property parameters (i.e., the cohesion c and internal friction angle φ) and pile spacing on the pile-soil stress ratio n were discussed respectively. The results show that to improve the load sharing ratio by the piles, the more effective means for filling materials with a larger value of φ is to increase the ratio of pile cap size to spacing, while to reduce the pile spacing properly and increase the value of cohesion c is advisable for those filling materials with a smaller value of φ. 展开更多

Traditional soil additives like Portland cement and lime are prone to cause the brittle fracture behavior of soil, and possibly, environmental impacts. This study explores the potential use of polyurethane organic polymer and sisal fiber in improving the mechanical performance of sand. The effects of polymer content, fiber content, and dry density on the unconfined compressive strength(UCS)and direct tensile strength(DTS)of the polymer-fiber-sand composite were evaluated. The results showed significant increase in UCS and DTS of the reinforced sand with the increase of polymer content, fiber content, and dry density. At high dry density condition,a single peaked stress−strain curve is often observed.Higher polymer content is beneficial to increasing the peak stress, while higher fiber content contributes more to the post-peak stress. The combined use of polymers and fibers in soil reinforcement effectively prevents the propagation and development of cracks under the stress.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)test was also performed to investigate the micro-structural changes and inter-particle relations. It was found through SEM images that the surface coating, bonding, and filling effects conferred by polymer matrix greatly enhance the interfacial interactions, and hence provide a cohesive environment where the strength of fibers could be readily mobilized. 展开更多

In the present study, the mechanical properties of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)-basalt hybrid fiber reinforced engineered cementitious composites(ECC)after exposure to elevated temperatures were experimentally investigated.Five temperatures of 20,50,100,200 and 400℃ were set to evaluate the residual compressive, tensile and flexural behaviors of hybrid and mono fiber ECC.It was shown that partial replacement of PVA fibers with basalt fibers endowed ECC with improved residual compressive toughness, compared to brittle failure of mono fiber ECC heated to 400℃.The tension tests indicated that the presence of basalt fibers benefited the tensile strength up to 200℃,and delayed the sharp reduction of strength to 400℃.Under flexural load, the peak deflections corresponding to flexural strengths of hybrid fiber ECC were found to be less vulnerable ranging from 20 to 100℃.Further,the scanning electron microscopy(SEM)results uncovered that the rupture of basalt fiber at moderate temperature and its pullout mechanism at high temperature was responsible for the mechanical evolution of hybrid fiber ECC.This work develops a better understanding of elevated temperature and basalt fiber impact on the residual mechanical properties and further provides guideline for tailoring ECC for improved fire resistance. 展开更多
