Established system equivalences for transition systems, such as trace equivalence and failures equivalence, require the ob- servations to be exactly identical. However, an accurate measure- ment is impossible when interacting with the physical world, hence exact equivalence is restrictive and not robust. Using Baire met- ric, a generalized framework of transition system approximation is proposed by developing the notions of approximate language equivalence and approximate singleton failures (SF) equivalence. The framework takes the traditional exact equivalence as a special case. The approximate language equivalence is coarser than the approximate Slc equivalence, just like the hierarchy of the exact ones. The main conclusion is that the two approximate equiva- lences satisfy the transitive property, consequently, they can be successively used in transition system approximation. 展开更多

With society's increasing dependence on critical infrastructure such as power grids and communications systems, the robustness of these systems has attracted significant attention.Failure of some nodes can trigger a cascading failure, which completely fragments the network, necessitating recovery efforts to improve robustness of complex systems. Inspired by real-world scenarios, this paper proposes repair models after two kinds of network failures, namely complete and incomplete collapse. In both models, three kinds of repair strategies are possible, including random selection(RS), node selection based on single network node degree(SD), and node selection based on double network node degree(DD). We find that the node correlation in each of the two coupled networks affects repair efficiency. Numerical simulation and analysis results suggest that the repair node ratio and repair strategies may have a significant impact on the economics of the repair process. The results of this study thus provide insight into ways to improve the robustness of coupled networks after cascading failures. 展开更多

The optimal operation of water distribution networks under local pipe failures, such as water main breaks, was proposed. Based on a hydraulic analysis and a simulation of water distribution networks, a macroscopic model for a network under a local pipe failure was established by the statistical regression. After the operation objectives under a local pipe failure were determined, the optimal operation model was developed and solved by the genetic algorithm. The program was developed and examined by a city distribution network. The optimal operation alternative shows that the electricity cost is saved approximately 11%, the income of the water corporation is increased approximately 5%, and the pressure in the water distribution network is distributed evenly to ensure the network safe operation. Therefore, the proposed method for optimal operation under local pipe failure is feasible and cost-effective. 展开更多

A more practical model of actuator failures than outage is considered. Based on the state feedback method, the resulting closed-loop systems are reliable in that they remain robust stochastically stable and satisfy a certain level of H∞ disturbance attenuation not only when all actuators are operational, but also in case of some actuator failures, The solvability condition of controllers can be equivalent to a feasibility problem of coupled linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). A numerical example is also given to illustrate the design procedures and their effectiveness. 展开更多

Shaped charge has been widely used for penetrating concrete. However, due to the obvious difference between the propagation of shock waves and explosion products in water and air,the theory governing the formation of shaped charge jets in water as well as the underwater penetration effect of concrete need to be studied. In this paper,we introduced a modified forming theory of an underwater hemispherical shaped charge, and investigated the behavior of jet formation and concrete penetration in both air and water experimentally and numerically. The results show that the modified jet forming theory predicts the jet velocity of the hemispherical liner with an error of less than 10%.The underwater jets exhibit at least 3%faster and 11%longer than those in air.Concrete shows different failure modes after penetration in air and water. The depth of penetration deepens at least 18.75%after underwater penetration, accompanied by deeper crater with 65%smaller radius. Moreover, cracks throughout the entire target are formed, whereas cracks exist only near the penetration hole in air. This comprehensive study provides guidance for optimizing the structure of shaped charge and improves the understanding of the permeability effect of concrete in water. 展开更多

Ice load on underwater vehicles breaking through ice covers from underneath is a significant concern for researchers in polar exploration, and the research on this problem is still in its early stages. Both mechanical experimental measurement and numerical simulation pose research challenges. This study focuses on the ice load of a cylinder structure breaking upward through the ice sheet form underneath in the Small Ice Model Basin of China Ship Scientific Research Center(CSSRC SIMB).A high-speed camera system was employed to observe the ice sheet failure during the tests,in which, with the loading position as center, local radial cracks and circumferential cracks were generated.A load sensor was used to measure the overall ice load during this process.Meanwhile,a numerical model was developed using LS-DYNA for validation and comparison. With this model, numerical simulation was conducted under various ice thicknesses and upgoing speeds to analyze the instantaneous curves of ice load. The calculation results were statistically analyzed under different working conditions to determine the influence of the factors on the ice load of the cylinder. The study explores the measurement method about ice load of objects vertically breaking through model ice sheet and is expected to provide some fundamental insights into the safety design of underwater structures operating in ice waters. 展开更多

In the past few decades, the navigation performance of ships and structures in ice-covered waters has not been fully studied, especially the influence of ice mechanical properties on icebreaking ability.Ice bending strength is a key ice parameter for predicting ship ice loads, and accurate ice bending strength is also the key to scaling model tests results to real ship. However, numerical simulation studies on model ice bending strength of ice tanks are often neglected. In this paper,an explicit finite element method model is used to simulate the ice cantilever beam test, and the failure load and bending strength of the ice are obtained. In this model, the Tsai-Wu failure criterion is used as the material constitutive model, and the required simulation parameters are obtained from the model ice test in ice tank.Parameter sensitivity analysis shows that the cantilever beam size of the model ice has a significant effect on the flexural strength. The results show that proper rounding at the root of the cantilever beam is beneficial to reduce stress concentration and obtain more accurate bending strength;the thickness, width and length of the cantilever beam should conform to a certain ratio, and consistent with the ITTC recommended reference. Therefore, the results of this study can promote model ice experiments and numerical studies and provide ice strength data support for ship design and polar ship maneuvering. 展开更多

The collapse of rock masses in fault-developed zones poses significant safety challenges during the excavation of high-stress underground caverns. This study investigates the spatiotemporal evolution of the collapse mechanisms of the cavern in the Yebatan Hydropower Station through using microseismic (MS) monitoring and displacement measurements. We developed a multi-parameter deformation early warning model that integrates three critical indicators: deformation rate, rate increment, and tangential angle of the deformation time curve. The results of the early warning model show a significant and abrupt increase in the deformation of the rock mass during the collapse process. The safety and stability of the local cavern in the face of excavation-induced disturbances are meticulously assessed utilizing MS data. Spatiotemporal analysis of the MS monitoring indicates a high frequency of MS events during the blasting phase, with a notable clustering of these events in the vicinity of the fault. These research results provide a valuable reference for risk warnings and stability assessments in the fault development zones of analogous caverns. 展开更多

The swinging-loading process is essential for automatic artillery loading systems. This study focuses on the problems of reliability analysis that affect swinging-loading positioning accuracy.A dynamic model for a multi degree-of-freedom swinging-loading-integrated rigid-flexible coupling system is established. This model is based on the identification of key parameters and platform experiments.Based on the spatial geometric relationship between the breech and loader during modular charge transfer and the possible maximum interference depth of the modular charge,a new failure criterion for estimating the reliability of swinging-loading positioning accuracy is proposed.Considering the uncertainties in the operation of the pendulum loader, the direct probability integration method is introduced to analyze the reliability of the swinging-loading positioning accuracy under three different charge numbers. The results indicate that under two and four charges, the swinging-loading process shows outstanding reliability. However,an unstable stage appears when the swinging motion occurred under six charges, with a maximum positioning failure probability of 0.0712.A comparison between the results obtained under the conventional and proposed criteria further reveals the effectiveness and necessity of the proposed criterion. 展开更多

Investigating the influence of radiation on glass fibre composites is essential for their use in space and aerospace environment.Gaining insight into the damage mechanisms caused by gamma irradiation, can improve the safety and resilience of structures. This paper is aimed at investigating the failure mode and damage of gamma-irradiated repurposed pultruded glass fibre-reinforced polyester subjected to lowvelocity impact using three types of non-destructive techniques.Three sets of differently layered configurations(CRC,WCRW,W2CR2C)consisting of chopped(c),roving(r),and weaved(w)fibre-reinforced polyester are applied in this study.Drop hammer test is applied to evaluate the low-impact resistance properties of Gamma-irradiated composite at 100 kGy,500 kGy,and 1000 kGy.Preliminary flexural and hardness tests are conducted to further assess the behaviour of irradiated polymer composites.Further, the damage modes associated with the low-impact test are characterised using infrared thermography, flat panel digital radiography, and microscope observation. The results show that the composites irradiated with various doses display good impact resistance at 20 J,presenting minor damages in the form of dents on the surface. The irradiated CRC and WCRW display best impact resistance at 500 kGy,while W2CR2C at 1000 kGy.This shows that the layering sequence of reinforcement fibre can influence the impact resistance of irradiated composites.Apart from that, the application of non-destructive techniques show different damage mechanisms in the form resin cracks, yarn splitting/fracture,and matrix splitting when the composites are exposed at high and low irradiation doses. These findings offer valuable data for the defence industry, particularly in the areas of repair, maintenance, and the development of new materials. 展开更多

The mechanical parameters and failure characteristics of sandstone under compressive-shear stress states provide crucial theoretical references for underground engineering construction. In this study,a series of varied angle shear tests(VASTs)were designed using acoustic emission(AE)detection and digital image correlation technologies to evaluate the mechanical behaviors of typical red sandstone.AE signal parameters revealed differences in the number and intensity of microcracks within the sandstone, with a test angle(α)of 50°identified as a significant turning point for its failure properties.Whenα³50°,microcrack activity intensified, and the proportion of tensile cracks increased.Asαincreased, the number of fragments generated after failure decreased, fragment sizes became smaller, and the crack network simplified.Cracks extended from the two cut slits at the ends of the rock, gradually penetrating along the centerline towards the central location,as observed from the evolution of the strain concentration field. Both cohesion(c)and internal friction angle(ϕ)measured in VAST were lower than those measured under conventional triaxial compression. 展开更多

This research addresses the growing demand for high-performance protective materials against high-velocity projectile impacts. The performance of multi-layered steel fiber-reinforced mortar(SFRM)panels with varying thicknesses and air gaps, was experimentally investigated under single and repeated impacts of 7.62×51 mm bullets fired from a distance of 50 m.The impact events were recorded using a high-speed camera at 40000 fps.Panel performance was assessed in terms of failure modes, kinetic energy absorption, spalling diameter, and percentage of back-face damage area, and weight loss. Results showed that panel configuration significantly influenced performance.Panel P10,with 70 mm SFRM thickness and 20 mm air gaps, provided the highest resistance, dissipating 5223 J of kinetic energy and preventing back-face damage. In contrast,P7,which absorbed 4476 J,presented a back damage area percentage of 8.93%after three impacts.Weight loss analysis further confirmed durability improvements, with P10 showing only 1.53%cumulative loss compared to 3.26%in P7.The inclusion of wider air gaps enhanced energy dissipation and reduced damage.Comparison between single and repeated impacts demonstrated the sustained resistance of high-performance panels, with P10 maintaining minimal degradation across three consecutive impacts. These findings highlight the potential of multi-layer SFRM panels to enhance ballistic resistance, making them suitable for military, security, and civilian protective applications requiring long-term durability. 展开更多

The spatial relationship between structural planes and principal stresses significantly affects the mechanical properties of deep hard rock. This paper examines the effect of the loading angle under true triaxial compression. While previous studies focused on the angleβbetween the maximum principal stress and the structural plane, the role of angleω,between the intermediate principal stress and the structural plane,is often overlooked.Utilizing artificially prefabricated granite specimens with a single non-penetrating structural plane,we set the loading angleβto range from 0°to 90°across seven groups, and assignedωvalues of 0°and 90°in two separate groups. The results show that the peak strength is negatively correlated withβup to 45°,beyond which it tends to stabilize. The angleωexerts a strengthening effect on the peak strength.Deformation mainly occurs post-peak,with the strain values ε_(1) and ε_(3) reaching levels 2−3 times higher than those in intact rock. The structural plane significantly influences failure mode whenω=0°,while failure localizes near the σ_(3) surface of the specimens whenω=90°.The findings enhance data on structural plane rocks under triaxial compression and inform theoretical research, excavation, and support design of rock structures. 展开更多

Cemented tailings backfill(CTB)is a crucial support material for ensuring the long-term stability of underground goafs.A comprehensive understanding of its compressive mechanical behavior is essential for improving engineering safety.Although extensive studies have been conducted on the uniaxial compressive properties of CTB,damage constitutive models that effectively capture its damage evolution process remain underdeveloped, and its failure mechanisms are not yet fully clarified. To address these gaps, this study conducted systematic uniaxial compression tests on CTB specimens prepared with varying cement-tailings ratios. The results revealed distinct compaction and softening phases in the stress−strain curves.A lower cement-tailings ratio significantly reduced the strength and deformation resistance of CTB,along with a decrease in elastic energy accumulation at peak stress and dissipation energy in the post peak stage.Based on these findings,a modified damage constitutive model was developed by introducing a correction factor, enabling accurate simulation of the entire uniaxial compression process of CTB with different cement-tailings ratios.Comparative analysis with classical constitutive models validated the proposed model’s accuracy and applicability in describing the compressive behavior of CTB.Furthermore, particle size distribution and acoustic emission tests were employed to investigate the influence of cement-tailings ratio on failure mechanisms. The results indicated that a lower cement-tailings ratio leads to coarser particle sizes, which intensify shear-related acoustic emission signals and ultimately result in more pronounced macroscopic shear failure. This study provides theoretical support and practical guidance for the optimal design of CTB mix ratios. 展开更多

To investigate the dynamic response of the cylindrical shell targets to supercavitating projectile transmedium penetration and the penetration mechanism, experiments and numerical simulations were conducted.Simulations examined the effects of entry water velocity and impact angle on penetration behavior. The results indicate that, upon water entry, the supercavitating projectile transfers its kinetic energy to the surrounding water medium, causing a sudden rise in local pressure. This creates an approximately hemispherical pressure field in the water medium ahead of the nose of the projectile, where the pressure distribution and magnitude are positively correlated with the velocity of the projectile. As the pressure field approaches the cylindrical shell, the area around the impact point experiences pre-stress and deformation due to the hydrodynamic pressure, which is known as the hydrodynamic ram effect. The deformation of the cylindrical shell caused by the hydrodynamic ram effect increases with increasing velocity of the projectile and exhibits a non-linear relationship with the impact angle, first decreasing and then increasing as the impact angle rises.Additionally, the hydrodynamic ram effect leads to greater local deformation and higher peak stresses in the cylindrical shell, which reduces the penetration drag force faced by the projectile in water compared to air, indicating a lower ballistic limit for underwater targets.During the penetration process,as the impact angle increases, the supercavitating projectile undergoes repetitive bending deformation and even brittle fracture, while the failure mode of the target is characterized by ductile hole expansion.Furthermore, the critical penetration velocity required to perforate the cylindrical shell target increases with increasing impact angle. 展开更多

This study investigates the shear mechanical responses and debonding failure mechanisms of anchoring systems comprising three anisotropic media and two anisotropic interfaces under controlled boundary conditions of constant normal load(F_(s)),constant normal stiffness(K),and shear rate(v).A systematic analysis of shear mechanical properties, the evolution of maximum principal strain field, and damage characteristics along shear failure surface is presented. Results from direct shear tests demonstrate that initial shear slip diminishes with increasing F_(s)and K,attributed to the normal constraint strengthening effect, while an increase in v enhances initial shear slip due to attenuated deformation coordination and stress transfer. As F_(s)increases from 7.5 to 120 kN,K from 0 to 12 MPa/mm,and v from 0.1 to 2 mm/min,the peak shear load increases by 210.32%and 80.16%with rising F_(s)and K,respectively, while decreases by 38.57%with increasing v.Correspondingly, the shear modulus exhibits, respectively,a 135.29%and 177.06%increase with rising F_(s)and K,and a 37.03%decrease with larger v.Initial shear dilation is identified as marking the formation of shear failure surface along anisotropic interfaces, resulting from the combined shear actions at the resin bolt interface, where resin undergoes shear by bolt surface protrusions, and the resin-rock interface, where mutual shear occurs between resin and rock. With increasing F_(s)and K and decreasing v,the location of the shear failure surface shifts from the resin-rock interface to the resin-bolt interface, accompanied by a transition in failure mode from tensile rupture of resin to shear off at the resin surface. 展开更多

The evolution of cracks in shale directly affects the efficient production of shale gas. However, there is a lack of research on the characteristics of crack initiation in deep dense shale under different stress conditions. In this work, considering the different combinations of confining pressure and bedding plane inclination angle(α),biaxial mechanical loading experiments were conducted on shale containing circular holes. The research results indicate that the confining pressure and inclination angle of the bedding planes significantly influence the failure patterns of shale containing circular holes. The instability of shale containing circular holes can be classified into five types:tensile failure along the bedding planes, tensile failure through the bedding planes, shear slip along the bedding planes, shear failure through the bedding planes, and block instability failure.Furthermore, the evolution of strain and stress fields around the circular holes was found to be the fundamental cause of variations in the initiation characteristics and locations of shale cracks. The crack initiation criterion for shale containing circular hole was established, providing a new method for evaluating the trajectory of shale hole wall fractures. This study holds significant importance for evaluating the evolution and stability of fracture networks within shale reservoirs. 展开更多

With the change of the main influencing factors such as structural configuration and impact conditions, reinforced concrete slabs exhibit different mechanical behaviors with different failure patterns, and the failure modes are transformed. In order to reveal the failure mode and transformation rule of reinforced concrete slabs under impact loads,a dynamic impact response test was carried out using a drop hammer test device. The dynamic data pertaining to the impact force, support reaction force, structural displacement, and reinforcement strain were obtained through the use of digital image correlation technology(DIC),impact force measurement, and strain measurement. The analysis of the ultimate damage state of the reinforced concrete slab identified four distinct types of impact failure modes:local failure by stamping, overall failure by stamping,local-overall coupling failure, and local failure by punching.Additionally, the influence laws of hammerhead shape, hammer height, and reinforcement ratio on the dynamic response and failure mode transformation of the slab were revealed. The results indicate that:(1)The local damage to the slab by the plane hammer is readily apparent, while the overall damage by the spherical hammer is more pronounced.(2)In comparison to the high reinforcement ratio slabs, the overall bending resistance of the low reinforcement ratio slabs is significantly inferior, and the slab back exhibits further cracks.(3)As the hammer height increases, the slab failure mode undergoes a transformation, shifting from local failure by stamping and overall failure by stamping to local-overall coupling failure and local failure by punching.(4)Three failure mode thresholds have been established, and by comparing the peak impact force with the failure thresholds, the failure mode of the slab can be effectively determined. 展开更多
