The finite-difference time-domain method is used to simulate the optical characteristics of an in-plane switching blue phase liquid crystal display.Compared with the matrix optic methods and the refractive method,the finite-difference timedomain method,which is used to directly solve Maxwell's equations,can consider the lateral variation of the refractive index and obtain an accurate convergence effect.The simulation results show that e-rays and o-rays bend in different directions when the in-plane switching blue phase liquid crystal display is driven by the operating voltage.The finitedifference time-domain method should be used when the distribution of the liquid crystal in the liquid crystal display has a large lateral change. 展开更多

An efficient locally one-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method based on the conformal scheme

An efficient conformal locally one-dimensional finite-difference time-domain(LOD-CFDTD) method is presented for solving two-dimensional(2D) electromagnetic(EM) scattering problems. The formulation for the 2D transverse-electric(TE) case is presented and its stability property and numerical dispersion relationship are theoretically investigated. It is shown that the introduction of irregular grids will not damage the numerical stability. Instead of the staircasing approximation, the conformal scheme is only employed to model the curve boundaries, whereas the standard Yee grids are used for the remaining regions. As the irregular grids account for a very small percentage of the total space grids, the conformal scheme has little effect on the numerical dispersion. Moreover, the proposed method, which requires fewer arithmetic operations than the alternating-direction-implicit(ADI) CFDTD method, leads to a further reduction of the CPU time. With the total-field/scattered-field(TF/SF) boundary and the perfectly matched layer(PML), the radar cross section(RCS) of two2 D structures is calculated. The numerical examples verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method. 展开更多

Relaxation time spectra (RTS) derived from time domain induced polarization data (TDIP) are helpful to assess oil reservoir pore structures. However, due to the sensitivity to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the inversion accuracy of the traditional singular value decomposition (SVD) inversion method reduces with a decrease of SNR. In order to enhance the inversion accuracy and improve robustness of the inversion method to the SNR, an improved inversion method, based on damping factor and spectrum component residual correction, is proposed in this study. The numerical inversion results show that the oscillation of the RTS derived from the SVD method increased with a decrease of SNR, which makes it impossible to get accurate inversion components. However, the SNR has little influence on inversion components of the improved method, and the RTS has high inversion accuracy and robustness. Moreover, RTS derived from core sample data is basically in accord with the pore-size distribution curve, and the RTS derived from the actual induced polarization logging data is smooth and continuous, which indicates that the improved method is practicable. 展开更多

This paper investigates the phenomenon of three-pulse photon echo in thick rare-earth ions doped crystal whose thickness is far larger than 0.002 cm which is adopted in previous works.The influence of thickness on the three-pulse photon echo's amplitude and efficiency is analyzed with the Maxwell-Bloch equations solved by finite-difference timedomain method.We demonstrate that the amplitude of three-pulse echo will increase with the increasing of thickness and the optimum thickness to generate three-pulse photon echo is 0.3 cm for Tm^(3+):YAG when the attenuation of the input pulse is taken into account.Meanwhile,we find the expression 0.09 exp(α'L),which is previously employed to describe the relationship between echo's efficiency and thickness,should be modified as 1.3 · 0.09 exp(2.4 ·α'L) with the propagation of echo considered. 展开更多

The original temporal clustering analysis (OTCA) is an effective technique for obtaining brain activation maps when the timing and location of the activation are completely unknown, but its deficiency of sensitivity is exposed in processing brain activation signal which is relatively weak. The time slice analysis method based on OTCA is proposed considering the weakness of the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal of the rat model. By dividing the stimulation period into several time slices and analyzing each slice to detect the activated pixels respectively after the background removal, the sensitivity is significantly improved. The inhibitory response in the hypothalamus after glucose loading is detected successfully with this method in the experiment on rat. Combined with the OTCA method, the time slice analysis method based on OTCA is effective on detecting when, where and which type of response will happen after stimulation, even if the fMRI signal is weak. 展开更多

Nonlinear wave loads can induce low-frequency and high-frequency resonance motions of a moored platform in deep water. For the analysis of the nonlinear response of an offshore platform under the action of irregular waves, the most widely used method in practice is the Cummins method, in which the second-order exciting forces in the time domain are computed by a two-term Volterra series model based on incident waves, first-order body motion response, and quadratic transfer functions(QTFs). QTFs are bichromatic waves acting on a body and are computed in the frequency domain in advance. For moving bodies, QTFs are related to the first-order body response, which is to be determined in the simulation process of body motion response but is unknown in the computation procedure of QTFs. In solving this problem, Teng and Cong(2017) proposed a method to divide the QTFs into different components,which are unrelated to the body response. With the application of the new QTF components, a modified Cummins method can be developed for the simulation of the nonlinear response of a moored floating platform. The transmission coefficients of electromagnetic (EM) waves due to a superconductor-dielectric superlattice are numerically calculated. Shift operator finite difference time domain (SO-FDTD) method is used in the analysis. By using the SO-FDTD method, the transmission spectrum is obtained and its characteristics are investigated for different thicknesses of superconductor layers and dielectric layers, from which a stop band starting from zero frequency can be apparently observed. The relation between this low-frequency stop band and relative temperature, and also the London penetration depth at a superconductor temperature of zero degree are discussed, separately. The low-frequency stop band properties of superconductor-dielectric superlattice thus are well disclosed. 展开更多

An extended car-following model with multiple delays is constructed to describe driver's driving behavior.Through stability analysis,the stability condition of this uncontrolled model is given.To dampen the negative impact of the driver's multiple delays(i.e.,stability condition is not satisfied),a novel control strategy is proposed to assist the driver in adjusting vehicle operation.The control strategy consists of two parts:the design of control term as well as the design of the parameters in the term.Bifurcation analysis is performed to illustrate the necessity of the design of parameters in control terms.In the course of the design of parameters in the control term,we improve the definite integral stability method to reduce the iterations by incorporating the characteristics of bifurcation,which can determine the appropriate parameters in the control terms more quickly.Finally,in the case study,we validate the control strategy by utilizing measured data and configuring scenario,which is closer to the actual traffic.The results of validation show that the control strategy can effectively stabilize the unstable traffic flow caused by driver's delays. 展开更多

The rapid growth of IP traffic has contributed to wide deployment of optical devices in elastic optical network.However,the passband shape of wavelength selective switches(WSSs)that are used in reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer(ROADM)/optical cross connect(OXC)is not ideal,causing the narrowing of spectrum.Spectral narrowing will lead to signal impairment.Therefore,guard-bands need to be inserted between adjacent paths which will cause the waste of resources.In this paper,we propose a service-based intelligent aggregation node selection and area division(ANS-AD)algorithm.For the rationality of the aggregation node selection,the ANS-AD algorithm chooses the aggregation nodes according to historical traffic information based on big data analysis.Then the ANS-AD algorithm divides the topology into areas according to the result of the aggregation node selection.Based on the ANS-AD algorithm,we propose a time-domain and spectral-domain flow aggregation(TS-FA)algorithm.For the purpose of reducing resources'waste,the TS-FA algorithm attempts to reduce the insertion of guard-bands by time-domain and spectral-domain flow aggregation.Moreover,we design a time-domain and spectral-domain flow aggregation module on software defined optical network(SDON)architecture.Finally,a simulation is designed to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms and the results show that our proposed algorithms can effectively reduce the resource waste. 展开更多

The analysis of electromagnetic propagation in a dispersive medium is complicated in the time-domain because its dielectric constant is frequency-dependent. In this paper, the dielectric constant of the dispersive medium is written as a rational polynomial function, and the relationship between D and E is derived in the time-domain. It is referred to as the shift operator finite-different time-domain (SO-FDTD) method. Compared to an analytical solution and a piecewise linear current density recursive convolution (PLJERC) solution, the high accuracy and efl%iency of this method is verified by calculating the reflectance of the electromagnetic wave through a cold plasma slab. As the electron density in plasma is distributed as the Epstein formula, the effect of distribution grads and electron collision frequency on the reflectance is calculated by using the SO-FDTD method. The result shows that the increase in the distribution grads coefficient affects the reflectance sharply. When it comes to a smaller distribution grads coelBcient, the increase of the collision frequency showed a significant effect on the reflectance, but on the contrary, there is actually less and less effect till it disappears. 展开更多

Environmental effects have an important influence on Offshore Wind Turbine (OWT) power generation efficiency and the structural stability of such turbines. In this study, we use an in-house Boundary Element (BEM)-panMARE code-to simulate the unsteady flow behavior of a full OWT with various combinations of aerodynamic and hydrodynamic loads in the time domain. This code is implemented to simulate potential flows for different applications and is based on a three-dimensional first-order panel method. Three different OWT configurations consisting of a generic 5 MW NREL rotor with three different types of foundations (Monopile, Tripod, and Jacket) are investigated. These three configurations are analyzed using the RANSE solver which is carried out using ANSYS CFX for validating the corresponding results. The simulations are performed under the same environmental atmospheric wind shear and rotor angular velocity, and the wave properties are wave height of 4 m and wave period of 7.16 s. In the present work, wave environmental effects were investigated firstly for the two solvers, and good agreement is achieved. Moreover, pressure distribution in each OWT case is presented, including detailed information about local flow fields. The time history of the forces at inflow direction and its moments around the mudline at each OWT part are presented in a dimensionless form with respect to the mean value of the last three loads and the moment amplitudes obtained from the BEM code, where the contribution of rotor force is lower in the tripod case and higher in the jacket case and the calculated hydrodynamic load that effect on jacket foundation type is lower than other two cases. 展开更多

In this study, the coupled heave-pitch motion equations of a spar platform were established by considering lst-order and 2nd-order random wave loads and the effects of time-varying displacement volume and transient wave elevation. We generated random wave loads based on frequency-domain wave load transfer functions and the Joint North Sea Wave Project (JONSWAP) wave spectrum, designed program codes to solve the motion equations, and then simulated the coupled heave-pitch motion responses of the platform in the time domain. We then calculated and compared the motion responses in different sea conditions and separately investigated the effects of 2nd-order random wave loads and transient wave elevation. The results show that the coupled heave-pitch motion responses of the platform are primarily dominated by wave height and the characteristic wave period, the latter of which has a greater impact. 2nd-order mean wave loads mainly affect the average heave value. The platform's pitch increases after the 2nd-order low frequency wave loads are taken into account. The platform's heave is underestimated if the transient wave elevation term in the motion equations is neglected. 展开更多

The cluster-shaped plasmonic nanostructures are used to manage the incident light inside an ultra-thin silicon solar cell.Here we simulate spherical,conical,pyramidal,and cylindrical nanoparticles in a form of a cluster at the rear side of a thin silicon cell,using the finite difference time domain(FDTD)method.By calculating the optical absorption and hence the photocurrent,it is shown that the clustering of nanoparticles significantly improves them.The photocurrent enhancement is the result of the plasmonic effects of clustering the nanoparticles.For comparison,first a cell with a single nanoparticle at the rear side is evaluated.Then four smaller nanoparticles are put around it to make a cluster.The photocurrents of 20.478 mA/cm2,23.186 mA/cm2,21.427 mA/cm2,and 21.243 mA/cm2 are obtained for the cells using clustering conical,spherical,pyramidal,cylindrical NPs at the backside,respectively.These values are 13.987 mA/cm2,16.901 mA/cm2,16.507 mA/cm2,17.926 mA/cm2 for the cell with one conical,spherical,pyramidal,cylindrical NPs at the backside,respectively.Therefore,clustering can significantly improve the photocurrents.Finally,the distribution of the electric field and the generation rate for the proposed structures are calculated. 展开更多

In this paper, a subwavelength metal-grating assisted sensor of Kretschmann style that is capable of detecting the sample with a refractive index higher than that of the substrate is proposed. The sensor configuration is similar to the traditional Kretschmann structure, but the metal film is pattered into a grating. As a TM-polarized laser beam impinges from the substrate, a resonant dip point in reflectance curve is produced at a certain incident angle. Our studies indicate that the sensing sensitivity and resolution are affected by the grating's gap and period, and after these parameters havelaeen optimized, a sensing sensitivity of 51.484°/RIU is obtained with a slightly changing resolution. 展开更多

This paper describes a revised piecewise linear recursive convolution PLRC-FDTD formulation for magnetized plasma which incorporates both anisotropy and frequency dispersion at the same time, enabling the transient analysis of magnetized plasma media. The technique is illustrated by numerical simulations of the reflection and transmission coefficients through a magnetized plasma layer. The results show that the revised PLRC-FDTD method has improved the accuracy over the original RC FDTD method and JEC FDTD method. 展开更多

An efficient wavelet-based finite-difference time-domain(FDTD)method is implemented for analyzing nanoscale optical devices,especially optical resonator.Because of its highly linear numerical dispersion properties the high-spatial-order FDTD achieves significant reduction in the number of cells,i.e.used memory,while analyzing a high-index dielectric ring resonator working as an add/drop multiplexer.The main novelty is that the wavelet-based FDTD model is extended in a parallel computation environment to solve physical problems with large dimensions.To demonstrate the efficiency of the parallelized FDTD model,a mirrored cavity is analyzed.The analysis shows that the proposed model reduces computation time and memory cost,and the parallel computation result matches the theoretical model. 展开更多

Improving lithographic masks with the assistance of indentations

Indentations etched on the output surface of a metallic mask are proposed to produce fine lithographic patterns with a resolution of 500 nm using the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method. Such a designed mask is capable of enhancing near field lithography (NFL) resolution more than three times compared with the structure without indentations. The simulation results show that the interference disturbance between the adjacent lithographic channels can be eliminated efficiently by employing the indentations. As a straightforward consequence, the channel-to-channel interspaces can be shortened significantly, maintaining a uniform field distribution and high contrast. 展开更多
