Performance Characterization of Visible Light Communication Based on GaN High-Voltage LED/PD

While considerable research has been conducted on the structural principles,fabrication techniques,and photoelectric properties of high-voltage light-emitting diodes(LEDs),their performance in light communication remains underexplored.A high-voltage seriesconnected LED or photodetector(HVS-LED/PD)based on the gallium nitride(GaN)integrated photoelectronic chip is presented in this paper.Multi-quantum wells(MQW)diodes with identical structures are integrated onto a single chip through wafer-scale micro-fabrication techniques and connected in series to construct the HVS-LED/PD.The advantages of the HVS-LED/PD in communication are explored by testing its performance as both a light transmitter and a PD.The series connection enhances the device's 3 dB bandwidth,allowing it to increase from 1.56 MHz to a minimum of 2.16 MHz when functioning as an LED,and from 47.42 kHz to at least 85.83 kHz when operating as a PD.The results demonstrate that the light communication performance of HVS-LED/PD is better than that of a single GaN MQW diode with bandwidth and transmission quantity,which enriches the research of GaN-based high-voltage devices. 展开更多

Non-orthogonal multiple access(NOMA) is considered as one of promising radio access techniques for visible light communications(VLC) in next-generation wireless communications systems.In order to provide theoretical support for designing VLC-NOMA,we derive its analytic expressions for the symbol error rate(SER).Specifically,NOMA is first incorporated with appropriate VLC to establish a VLC-NOMA framework.Afterwards,mathematical expressions of the SER for the VLC-NOMA are developed.Moreover,numerical results are provided carefully to demonstrate that the proposed VLC-NOMA scheme outperforms than state-of-the-art orthogonal frequency division multiple access(OFDMA) one in terms of SER performance.Finally,relationships between the SER performance and the number of users,power allocation coefficient and semi-angle are well investigated,which can give us a scientific guide to devise the VLC-NOMA system for achieving better SER performance. 展开更多

In underground mines, visible light communication(VLC) system is a promising method to realize effective communication,which supports communication and illumination at the same time. Therefore, adequate research of underlying physical propagation phenomenon should be carried out to realize VLC system in underground mines. To design VLC system and evaluate its performance, accurate and efficient channel models, including large-scale fading and scattering characteristics, are needed to be established. However,the characteristics of the underlying VLC channels about fading and scattering have not been sufficiently investigated yet. In this paper, a path loss channel model, based on the recursive model, is proposed precisely. Its path loss exponent is determined by three different trajectories, which is studied in the mining roadway and working face environment. Besides, the shadowing effect for VLC has been modelled by a Bimodal Gaussian distribution in underground mines. Considering the number of transmitters in line-of-sight(Lo S) as well as non-line-of-sight(NLo S) scenarios,our simulation illustrates the fact that, as the curve fitting technique is employed, the path loss displays a linear behavior in log-domain.The path loss expression is derived, it is related to the distance. Finally, root mean square(RMS) delay spread and Mie scattering in underground mines are analyzed. 展开更多

In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a bi-directional indoor communication system based on visible light RGB-LED. Spectrally efficient modulation formats (QAM-OFDM), advanced digital signal processing, pre- and post- equalization are adopted to compensate the severe frequency response of indoor channel. In this system, we utilize red-green-blue Light emitting diodes (LEDs), of which each color can be used to carry different signals. For downlink, the low frequencies of each color are used while for uplink, the high frequencies are used. The overall data rate of downlink and uplink are 1.15-Gb/s and 300-Mb/s. The bit error ratios (BERs) for all channels after 0.7 m indoor delivery are below pre-forward- error-correction (pre-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10-3. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest data rate in bi-directional visible light communication system. 展开更多

Visible light communication(VLC)and non-orthogonal multiple access(NOMA)have been deemed two promising techniques in the next wireless communication networks.In this paper,secure communications in the presence of potential eavesdropper are investigated for a multiple-input single-output VLC system with NOMA.The artificial noise jamming and beamforming technologies are applied to improve secure performance.A robust resource allocation scheme is proposed to minimize the total transmit power taking into account the constraints on the quality of service requirement of the desired users and the maximum tolerable data rate of the eavesdropper,and the practical imperfect channel state information of both the desired users and the eavesdropper.The formulated non-convex optimization problem is tackled based onS-Procedure and semi-definite programming relaxation.Simulation results illustrate that our proposed resource allocation scheme can effectively guarantee communication security and achieve transmit power saving.Moreover,the height and number of LED can significantly affect system performance and the optimum LED height can be obtained for different LED numbers. 展开更多

Visible light communication(VLC) is expected to be a potential candidate of the key technologies in the sixth generation(6G) wireless communication system to support Internet of Things(IoT) applications. In this work, a separate least mean square(S-LMS) equalizer is proposed to compensate lowpass frequency response in VLC system. Joint optimization is employed to realize the proposed S-LMS equalizer with pre-part and post-part by introducing Lagrangian. For verification, the performance of VLC system based on multi-band carrier-less amplitude and phase(m-CAP) modulation with S-LMS equalizer is investigated and compared with that without equalizer,with LMS equalizer and with recursive least squares(RLS)-Volterra equalizer. Results indicate the proposed equalizer shows significant improved bit error ratio(BER) performance under the same conditions. Compared to the RLS-Volterra equalizer, SLMS equalizer achieves better performance under low data rate or high signal noise ratio(SNR) conditions with obviously lower computational complexity. 展开更多

In this paper,the channel capacity of the multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO)visible light communication(VLC)system is investigated under the peak,average optical and electrical power constraints.Finding the channel capacity of MIMO VLC is shown to be a mixed integer programming problem.To address this open problem,we propose an inexact gradient projection method to find the channel capacity-achieving discrete input distribution and the channel capacity of MIMO VLC.Also we derive both upper and lower bounds of the capacity of MIMO VLC with the closed-form expressions.Furthermore,by considering practical discrete constellation inputs,we develop the optimal power allocation scheme to maximize transmission rate of MIMO VLC system.Simulation results show that more discrete points are needed to achieve the channel capacity as SNR increases.Both the upper and lower bounds of channel capacity are tight at low SNR region.In addition,comparing the equal power allocation,the proposed power allocation scheme can significantly increase the rate for the low-order modulation inputs. 展开更多

Simultaneous dimming controlling and data transmission are usually required in a white LED based indoor visible light communication system.However,the diming controlling of LED normally interferes the data transmission due to the modulation nonlinearity of LED.In order to solve this problem,a scheme by separating the LEDs for the functions of dimming control and data transmission respectively is proposed in this paper.In the scheme,the LEDs used for dimming control function are driven by a dc amplified circuit,and the LEDs for data transmission are driven by a digital modulation circuit respectively.In this way,the modulation distortion to the data signal caused by the modulation nonlinearity can be avoided even if the dimming is at high level dc driven current.The proof-of-concept experiment of a 2.5Mbit/s visible light communication system demonstrates that the dimming controlling and data transmission can be realized simultaneously in a simple way,and the data transmission is not affected by the dimming controlling function.Compared to previous methods,the scheme in this paper is simpler and cost effective,and makes sense when high rate data is transmitted in a visible light communication system. 展开更多

Yellow light-emitting diodes(LEDs) as soft light have attracted abundant attention in lithography room, museum and art gallery. However, the development of efficient yellow LEDs lags behind green and blue LEDs, and the available perovskites yellow LEDs suffer from the instability. Herein, a pressure-assisted cooling method is proposed to grow lead-free CsCu2I3single crystals, which possess uniform surface morphology and enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield(PLQY) stability, with only 10% PLQY losses after being stored in air after 5000 h.Then, the single crystals used for yellow LEDs without encapsulation exhibit a decent Correlated Color Temperature(CCT) of 4290 K, a Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage(CIE) coordinate of(0.38, 0.41), and an excellent 570-h operating stability under heating temperature of 100°C. Finally, the yellow LEDs facilitate the application in wireless visible light communication(VLC), which show a-3 dB bandwidth of 21.5 MHz and a high achievable data rate of 219.2 Mbps by using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) modulation with adaptive bit loading. The present work not only promotes the development of lead-free single crystals, but also inspires the potential of CsCu2I3in the field of yellow illumination and wireless VLC. 展开更多

Visible light(VL)plays an important role in achieving high-precision positioning and low bit error radio(BER)data communication.However,most VL-based systems can not achieve positioning and communication,simultaneously.There are two problems:1)the hybrid systems are difficult to extract distinguishable positioning beacon features without affecting communication performance,2)in the hybrid systems,the lost data bits in the inter-frame gap(IFG)are hard to recover,which affects positioning and communication performance.Therefore,in this article,we propose a novel VL-based hybrid positioning and communication system,named HY-PC system,to solve the above problems.First,we propose the robust T-W mapping for recognizing specific Light Emitting Diodes(LEDs),which can provide stable LED recognition accuracy without adding extra beacon data and does not decrease the communication rate.Furthermore,we also propose the novel linear block coding and bit interleaving mechanism,which can recover the lost data bits in the IFG and improve data communication performance.Finally,we use commercial off-the-shelf devices to implement our HY-PC system,extensive experimental results show that our HY-PC system can achieve consistent high-precision positioning and low-BER data communication,simultaneously. 展开更多

When there is an increasing interest in visible light communication(VLC), outdoor vehicle VLC has emerged as a promising candidate technology for future intelligent transportation systems. However, in VLC based vehicular applications, several challenges impede successful commercial application of VLC based products. This article first provides a thorough overview of the existing challenges. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel architecture with tracking and environment sensing ability for practical vehicular applications. Moreover, a proof-ofconcept prototype is implemented to validate the feasibility of the proposed system. Experimental and simulation results show that the proposed VLC system can provide reliable communications with a bit-error rate less than 10-4for vehicles under strong interference lights. Finally, based on the evaluations, we propose some key design issues for future studies in this research area. 展开更多

This paper proposes a novel indoor positioning scheme based on visible light communication(VLC).A new indoor VLC positioning scheme using fingerprint database with multi-parameters have been raised.We conduct simulation and experimental research on the illumination intensity distribution of several direction parameters.In the experiment,four LED matrixes are identified by LED-ID with room dimensions of 3.75×4.00×2.7 m^3.The results show that the mean of the location error is 0.22 m in the receiving plane,verifying the correctness and feasibility of the positioning scheme. 展开更多

This paper investigates the bit-interleaved coded generalized spatial modulation(BICGSM) with iterative decoding(BICGSM-ID) for multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) visible light communications(VLC). In the BICGSM-ID scheme, the information bits conveyed by the signal-domain(SiD) symbols and the spatial-domain(SpD) light emitting diode(LED)-index patterns are coded by a protograph low-density parity-check(P-LDPC) code. Specifically, we propose a signal-domain symbol expanding and re-allocating(SSER) method for constructing a type of novel generalized spatial modulation(GSM) constellations, referred to as SSERGSM constellations, so as to boost the performance of the BICGSM-ID MIMO-VLC systems.Moreover, by applying a modified PEXIT(MPEXIT) algorithm, we further design a family of rate-compatible P-LDPC codes, referred to as enhanced accumulate-repeat-accumulate(EARA) codes,which possess both excellent decoding thresholds and linear-minimum-distance-growth property. Both analysis and simulation results illustrate that the proposed SSERGSM constellations and P-LDPC codes can remarkably improve the convergence and decoding performance of MIMO-VLC systems. Therefore, the proposed P-LDPC-coded SSERGSM-mapped BICGSMID configuration is envisioned as a promising transmission solution to satisfy the high-throughput requirement of MIMO-VLC applications. 展开更多

在可见光通信(visible light communication, VLC)系统中,针对用户位置、接收机朝向对视距(line of sight, LOS)链路影响严重,以及实时准确的信道状态信息(channel state information, CSI)反馈需求而导致的整体计算复杂性问题,对用户... 在可见光通信(visible light communication, VLC)系统中,针对用户位置、接收机朝向对视距(line of sight, LOS)链路影响严重,以及实时准确的信道状态信息(channel state information, CSI)反馈需求而导致的整体计算复杂性问题,对用户位置和接收机朝向随机的下行VLC系统性能进行了研究,并利用非正交多址接入(non-orthogonal multiple access, NOMA)技术提高频谱利用率。根据用户位置以及接收机朝向模型建立的室内VLC系统一般框架,推导了中断概率以及遍历和速率解析表达式。在此基础上,进一步提出了不同的NOMA调度机制及用户反馈策略,以提高系统性能、降低链路开销。最后,通过蒙特卡洛仿真验证了解析结果的正确性。仿真结果表明,用户位置和接收机朝向会严重影响VLC系统性能,且对于任意NOMA调度机制,同时反馈距离和朝向信息比只反馈距离信息更具优越性。 展开更多

VLC-WiFi异构网络已经成为广受欢迎的短距离无线通信方式之一。然而,有限的频谱资源导致VLC-WiFi异构网络容量难以满足井喷式增长的用户数据带宽需求。该文结合物理层的动态链路传输性能以及媒体访问控制层的队列缓冲延迟性能,定义链路传输性能和链路服务质量(QoS)感知等级评估公式,根据用户数据包QoS需求,设计QoS感知的跨层动态资源分配(QoS-CLDRA)方法,并引入非正交多址接入的用户匹配与功率分配策略,进一步提升系统的吞吐量。仿真结果表明:所提方法能够有效提升系统吞吐量和降低缓冲队列长度。 展开更多

为了有效降低室内基于广义空移键控(Generalized Space Shift Keying,GSSK)调制技术的可见光通信(Visible Light Communications,VLC)系统LED选择算法的复杂度,提高系统的LED选择速度,提出了一种基于支持向量机(Support Vector Machine,... 为了有效降低室内基于广义空移键控(Generalized Space Shift Keying,GSSK)调制技术的可见光通信(Visible Light Communications,VLC)系统LED选择算法的复杂度,提高系统的LED选择速度,提出了一种基于支持向量机(Support Vector Machine,SVM)的机器学习低复杂度高效率LED选择算法.通过将室内GSSK⁃VLC系统的LED选择等价建模为多分类的机器学习问题,利用核SVM构建LED选择的最优化问题,通过对偶理论,获得原问题的二次凸规划对偶问题,从而高效的获取SVM的最优分类参数.最后,通过学习训练获得的最优分类参数实现对任意给定用户信道信息的在线天线选择.通过计算机仿真和复杂度分析,与传统的LED选择算法相比,本文提出的算法能够在实现在线LED选择的同时保持低误码率(Bit Error Ratio,BER)性能,表明了该算法的有效性. 展开更多
