Isolated pillars in underground mines are subjected to uniaxial stress, and the load bearing cross-section of pillars is commonly rectangularly shaped. In addition, the uniaxial compression test(UCT)is widely used for determining the basic mechanical properties of rocks and revealing the mechanism of isolated pillar disasters under unidimensional stress. The shape effects of rock mechanical properties under uniaxial compression are mainly quantitatively reflected in the specific shape ratios of rocks. Therefore,it is necessary to study the detailed shape ratio effects on the mechanical properties of rectangular prism rock specimens and isolated pillars under uniaxial compressive stress. In this study, granite, marble and sandstone rectangular prism specimens with various height to width ratios(r)and width to thickness ratios(u)were prepared and tested. The study results show that r and u have a great influence on the bearing ability of rocks, and thin or high rocks have lower uniaxial compressive strength.Reducing the level of r can enhance the u effect on the strength of rocks, and increasing the level of u can enhance the r effect on the strength of rocks. The lateral strain on the thickness side of the rock specimen is larger than that on the width side, which implies that crack growth occurs easily on the thickness side.Considering r and u,a novel strength prediction model of isolated pillars was proposed based on the testing results, and the prediction model was used for the safety assessment of 179 isolated pillars in the Xianglu Mountain Tungsten Mine. 展开更多

Cracking behaviors of rocks significantly affect the safety and stability of the explorations of underground space and deep resources. To understand deeply the microscopic cracking process and mechanical property of rocks,X-ray micro-computed tomography(X-μCT)is applied to capture the rock microstructures. The digital color difference UNet(DCD-UNet)-based deep learning algorithm with 3D reconstruction is proposed to reconstruct the multiphase heterogeneity microstructure models of rocks. The microscopic cracking and mechanical properties are studied based on the proposed microstructure-based peridynamic model. Results show that the DCD-UNet algorithm is more effective to recognize and to represent the microscopic multiphase heterogeneity of rocks. As damage characteristic index of multiphase rocks increases, transgranular cracks in the same grain phase, transgranular and intergranular cracks of pore-grain phase, intergranular and secondary transgranular cracks and transgranular crack between different grains propagate. The ultimate microscopic failure modes of rocks are mainly controlled by the transgranular cracks-based T1-shear,T3-shear,T1-tension,T2-tension and T3-tension failures, and the intergranular cracks-based T1-tension,T1-shear and T3-shear failures under uniaxial compression. 展开更多

Based on electromagnetic radiation characteristics, the present research studied the damage evolution of rock under uniaxial compression. Besides, this research built the coal-rock damage evolution model considered residual strength. The applicability and accuracy of the model were verified through experiments. The results show that coal-rock damage evolution consists of four periods. The first period is from the beginning of compression to nearly 20% of the stress peak value, during which the damage variable changes stably about 0.1, and accordingly a few of electromagnetic radiation signals emerge. The second period is from about 20% to 70% of the stress peak value. The damage has stable development, and the parameter of electromagnetic radiation characteristics turns larger continuously with the increase of stress. The third period is when the damage has accelerated development, the coal-rock was broken which result from sharp increasing of the damage variable, meanwhile a great quantity of electromagnetic radiation signals emerge. The fourth period is after the coal-rock fracture, during which the damage variable corresponding to the parameter of electromagnetic radiation characteristics has a stable development. This research has great academic and realistic significance for further studies the electromagnetic radiation characteristics of coal-rock under loading and damage and the forecasting of coal-rock dynamic disasters. 展开更多

By molecular dynamics simulations employing an embedded atom method potential, we have investigated structural transformations in single crystal A1 caused by uniaxial strain loading along the [001], [011] and [111] directions. We find that the structural transition is strongly dependent on the crystal orientations. The entire structure phase transition only occurs when loading along the [001] direction, and the increased amplitude of temperature for [001] loading is evidently lower than that for other orientations. The morphology evolutions of the structural transition for [011] and [111] loadings are analysed in detail. The results indicate that only 20% of atoms transit to the hcp phase for [011] and [111] loadings, and the appearance of the hcp phase is due to the partial dislocation moving forward on {lll}fcc family. For [011] loading, the hcp phase grows to form laminar morphology in four planes, which belong to the {111}fcc family; while for [111] loading, the hcp phase grows into a laminar structure in three planes, which belong to the {111}fcc family except for the (111) plane. In addition, the phase transition is evaluated by using the radial distribution functions. 展开更多

This paper reports a novel method of repetitive uniaxial compression combined with accumulative fold for preparing bulk submicron- to nanocrystalline copper starting with a coarse grained counterpart. Grain size reduction and microstrain variations of the high purity copper samples after different passes of compression and fold are investigated by scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Our results show that the average grain size of samples decreases from about 830 nm to 127 nm as the number of compression passes increases to 30. Microstrain in the compressed sample is found to increase for the first 20 passes, but to decrease at the last 10 passes. The variations of compressive yield strength and the shift of XRD peaks to larger diffraction angles are observed in the squeezed sample. Our experimental results demonstrate that the repetitive uniaxial compression combined with accumulative fold is an effective method to prepare bulk nanocrystalline metallic materials, in particular for soft metals such as Cu, Al and Pb. 展开更多

We investigate the mechanical and microstructural changes of the densified silica glass under uniaxial loading-unloading via atomistic simulations with a modified BKS potential. The stress–strain relationship is found to include three respective stages: elastic, plastic and hardening regions. The bulk modulus increases with the initial densification and will undergo a rapid increase after complete densification. The yield pressure varies from 5 to 12 GPa for different densified samples. In addition, the Si–O–Si bond angle reduces during elastic deformation under compression, and 5-fold Si will increase linearly in the plastic deformation. In the hardening region, the peak splitting and the new peak are both found on the Si–Si and O–O pair radial distribution functions, where the 6-fold Si is increased. Instead, the lateral displacement of the atoms always varies linearly with strain, without evident periodic characteristic. As is expected, the samples are permanently densified after release from the plastic region, and the maximum density of recovered samples is about 2.64 g/cm^3, which contains 15 % 5-fold Si, and the Si–O–Si bond angle is less than the ordinary silica glass. All these findings are of great significance for understanding the deformation process of densified silica glass. 展开更多

The uniaxial compression tests were conducted on the cylindrical shale specimens with bedding plane inclined at 0° and 90° to the axial loading direction, respectively. Effect of the bedding orientation on the mechanical property and energy evolution characteristics of shales was revealed. The failure mechanisms of the specimens with layers in 0° orientation showed splitting failure along weak bedding, while the specimens with layers in 90° orientation were failed by shearing sliding. The values of compressive strength, elastic modulus and shear modulus of samples at 0° were higher than those of samples at 90°and there was little difference of Poisson's ratio between samples at 0° and 90°. The analysis of the stress–strain energy and acoustic emission(AE) energy indicated that the growth rate of absorbed energy density and elastic energy density at 0° was significantly faster than that at 90°, hence their final values at 0°were relatively larger than the latter. Moreover, higher energy release was observed for specimens at 0°.The energy release and rapid growth of energy dissipation also appeared more early at 0°. The stress ratio63% was a critical point of energy distribution at which differences started to arise between samples at 0°and 90°. These results indicated that the failure of shale at 0° was more violent and devastative than the failure of shale at 90°. 展开更多

The effect of structural discontinuities on the progressive failure process of anisotropic rocks should be paid particular attention. The crack damage stress σ_(cd),also considered as the yield strength, and the relationship between σ_(cd) and the uniaxial peak strength σ_(ucs) of anisotropic rocks for different orientations 8 of the isotropy planes with respect to the loading directions were investigated theoretically and experimentally.A theoretical relation of σ_(cd)/σ_(ucs) with the function of the shape parameter m was established.Additionally, uniaxial compression tests of shale samples were conducted for several inclinations θ.The test result of σ_(cd)/σ_(ucs) was close to the theoretical value for a given orientation.Furthermore, both experimental results and theoretical solutions of σ_(cd)/σ_(ucs) were independent of the inclination θ while σ_(cd) andσ_(ucs) were strongly affected by θ.The strength ratio σ_(cd)/σ_(ucs) may therefore be an intrinsic property of anisotropic rocks and could be used to predict the failure of rock samples. 展开更多

Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) and modulus of elasticity (E) are the most important rock parameters required and determined for rock mechanical studies in most civil and mining projects. In this study, two mathematical methods, regression analysis and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), were used to predict the uniaxial compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. The P-wave velocity, the point load index, the Schmidt hammer rebound number and porosity were used as inputs for both meth-ods. The regression equations show that the relationship between P-wave velocity, point load index, Schmidt hammer rebound number and the porosity input sets with uniaxial compressive strength and modulus of elasticity under conditions of linear rela-tions obtained coefficients of determination of (R2) of 0.64 and 0.56, respectively. ANNs were used to improve the regression re-sults. The generalized regression and feed forward neural networks with two outputs (UCS and E) improved the coefficients of determination to more acceptable levels of 0.86 and 0.92 for UCS and to 0.77 and 0.82 for E. The results show that the proposed ANN methods could be applied as a new acceptable method for the prediction of uniaxial compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of intact rocks. 展开更多

In this study, uniaxial compressive strength(UCS),unit weight(UW),Brazilian tensile strength(BTS),Schmidt hardness(SHH),Shore hardness(SSH),point load index(Is50)and P-wave velocity(Vp)properties were determined. To predict the UCS,simple regression(SRA),multiple regression(MRA),artificial neural network(ANN),adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system(ANFIS)and genetic expression programming(GEP)have been utilized. The obtained UCS values were compared with the actual UCS values with the help of various graphs.Datasets were modeled using different methods and compared with each other. In the study where the performance indice PIat was used to determine the best performing method,MRA method is the most successful method with a small difference. It is concluded that the mean PIat equal to 2.46 for testing dataset suggests the superiority of the MRA,while these values are 2.44,2.33,and 2.22 for GEP,ANFIS,and ANN techniques, respectively. The results pointed out that the MRA can be used for predicting UCS of rocks with higher capacity in comparison with others.According to the performance index assessment, the weakest model among the nine model is P7,while the most successful models are P2,P9,and P8,respectively. 展开更多

Figuring out rock strength plays essential roles in the sub ground mining activities, such as oil and gas well drilling and hydraulic fracturing, coal mining, tunneling, and other civil engineering scenarios. To help understand the effects of the mineralogical composition on evaluating the rock strength, this research tries to establish indirect prediction models of rock strength by specific input mineral contents for common sedimentary rocks.Using rock samples collected from the outcrops in the Sichuan Basin, uniaxial compression tests have been conducted to sandstone, carbonate, and shale cores.Combining with statistical analysis, the experimental data prove it true that the mineralogical composition can be utilized to predict the rock strength under specific conditions but the effects of mineralogical composition on the rock strength highly depend on the rock lithologies.According to the statistical analysis results, the predicted values of rock strengths by the mineral contents can get high accuracies in sandstone and carbonate rocks while no evidences can be found in shale rocks. The best indicator for predicting rock strength should be the quartz content for the sandstone rocks and the dolomite content for the carbonate rocks.Especially,to improve the evaluation accuracy, the rock strengths of sandstones can be obtained by substituting the mineral contents of quartz and clays, and those of carbonates can be calculated by the mineral contents of dolomite and calcite.Noticeably, the research data point out a significant contrast of quartz content in evaluating the rock strength of the sandstone rocks and the carbonate rocks.Increasing quartz content helps increase the sandstone strength but decrease the carbonate strength. As for shale rocks,no relationship exists between the rock strength and the mineralogical composition(e.g.,the clay fractions). To provide more evidences, detailed discussion also provides the readers more glances into the framework of the rock matrix, which can be further studied in the future. These findings can help understand the effects of mineralogical composition on the rock strengths, explain the contrasts in the rock strength of the responses to the same mineral content(e.g.,the quartz content),and provide another indirect method for evaluating the rock strength of common sedimentary rocks. 展开更多

To better understand the failure behaviours and strength of bolt-reinforced blocky rocks, large scale extensive laboratory experiments are carried out on blocky rock-like specimens with and without rockbolt reinforcement. The results show that both shear failure and tensile failure along joint surfaces are observed but the shear failure is a main controlling factor for the peak strength of the rock mass with and without rockbolts. The rockbolts are necked and shear deformation simultaneously happens in bolt reinforced rock specimens. As the joint dip angle increases, the joint shear failure becomes more dominant. The number of rockbolts has a significant impact on the peak strain and uniaxial compressive strength(UCS),but little influence on the deformation modulus of the rock mass.Using the Winkler beam model to represent the rockbolt behaviours,an analytical model for the prediction of the strength of boltreinforced blocky rocks is proposed.Good agreement between the UCS values predicted by proposed model and obtained from experiments suggest an encouraging performance of the proposed model. In addition, the performance of the proposed model is further assessed using published results in the literature, indicating the proposed model can be used effectively in the prediction of UCS of bolt-reinforced blocky rocks. 展开更多

To evaluate the coal burst proneness more precisely,a new energy criterion namely the residual elastic energy index was proposed. This study begins by performing the single-cyclic loading-unloading uniaxial compression tests with five pre-peak unloading stress levels to explore the energy storage characteristics of coal.Five types of coals from different mines were tested, and the instantaneous destruction process of the coal specimens under compression loading was recorded using a high speed camera. The results showed a linear relationship between the elastic strain energy density and input energy density, which confirms the linear energy storage law of coal.Based on this linear energy storage law,the peak elastic strain energy density of each coal specimen was obtained precisely.Subsequently,a new energy criterion of coal burst proneness was established, which was called the residual elastic energy index(defined as the difference between the peak elastic strain energy density and post peak failure energy density).Considering the destruction process and actual failure characteristics of coal specimens, the accuracy of evaluating coal burst proneness based on the residual elastic energy index was examined. The results indicated that the residual elastic energy index enables reliable and precise evaluations of the coal burst proneness. 展开更多

The difficulties associated with performing direct compression strength tests on rocks lead to the development of indirect test methods for the rock strength assessment. Indirect test methods are simple, more economical, less time-consuming, and easily adaptable to the field. The main aim of this study was to derive correlations between direct and indirect test methods for basalt and rhyolite rock types from Carlin trend deposits in Nevada. In the destructive methods, point load index, block punch index, and splitting tensile strength tests are performed. In the non-destructive methods, Schmidt hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests are performed. Correlations between the direct and indirect compression strength tests are developed using linear and nonlinear regression analysis methods. The results show that the splitting tensile strength has the best correlation with the uniaxial compression strength.Furthermore, the Poisson's ratio has no correlation with any of the direct and indirect test results. 展开更多

During the development of hot dry rock, the research on thermal fatigue damage caused by thermal shock of cold and heat cycles is the basis that ensures the long-term utilization of geothermal resources, but there are not enough relevant studies at present.Based on this, the thermal damage tests of granite at different temperatures(250,350,450°C)and quenching cycles(1,5,10,15 cycles)were carried out.Preliminary reveals the damage mechanism and heat transfer law of the quenching cycle effect on hot dry rock. The results show that with the increase of temperature and cycles, the uneven thermal expansion of minerals and the thermal shock caused by quenching promote the crack development of granite, resulting in the decrease of P-wave velocity, thermal conductivity and uniaxial compressive strength of granite.Meanwhile, the COMSOL was used to simulate the heat transfer of hot dry rock under different heat treatment conditions. It concluded that the increase in the number of quenching cycles reduced the heat transfer capacity of the granite, especially more than 10 quenching cycles, which also reflects that the thermal fatigue damage leads to a longer time for the temperature recovery of the hot dry rock mass.In addition, the three-dimensional nonlinear fitting relationship among thermal conductivity, temperature and cycle number was established for the first time, which can better reveal the change rule of thermal conductivity after quenching thermal fatigue effect of hot dry rock. The research results provide theoretical support for hot dry rock reservoir reconstruction and production efficiency evaluation. 展开更多

Thus, a thorough understanding of the deformation and failure processes of coal is necessary. In this study, the energy dissipation rate is proposed as a novel indicator of coal deformation and failure under static and dynamic compressive loads. The relationship between stress-strain, uniaxial compressive strength, displacement rate, loading rate, fractal dimension, and energy dissipation rate was investigated through experiments conducted using the MTS C60 tests(static loads) and split Hopkinson pressure bar system(dynamic loads). The results show that the energy dissipation rate peaks are associated with stress drop during coal deformation, and also positively related to the uniaxial compressive strength. A higher displacement rate of quasi-static loads leads to an initial increase and then a decrease in energy dissipation rate, whereas a higher loading rate of dynamic loads results in larger energy dissipation rate. Theoretical analysis indicates that a sudden increase in energy dissipation rate suggests partial fracture occurring within coal under both quasi-static and dynamic loads. Hence, the energy dissipation rate is an essential indicator of partial fracture and final failure within coal, as well as a prospective precursor for catastrophic failure in coal mine. 展开更多

In this paper, the optimization design of the low strength mechanical test and orthogonal test have been analyzed in order to simulate the mechanical properties of thick and extra-thick coal seam accurately in a similar material simulation test. The results show that the specimen can reach a wider range of strength when cement has been used compared to that of gypsum, suggesting that cement is more suitable for making coal seam in similar material simulation tests. The uniaxial compressive strength is more sensitive to cement than coal or sand. The proportion of coal and sand do not play a decisive role in uniaxial compressive strength. The uniaxial compressive strength and specimen density decrease as the mass percent of coal and aggregate–binder ratio rise. There is a positive correlation between uniaxial compressive strength and density. The No. 5 proportion(cement: sand: water: activated carbon: coal = 6:6:7:1.1:79.9)was chosen to be used in the similar material simulation test of steeply dipping and extra-thick coal seam with a density of 0.913 g/cm^3 and an uniaxial compressive strength of 0.076 MPa which are in accordance with the similarity theory. The phenomenon of overburden stratum movement, fracture development and floor pressure relief were obtained during the similar material simulation test by using the proportion. 展开更多

The significant differences between hard rocks(more brittle)and soft rocks(more ductile)may suggest the use of different failure criteria.A strength criterion for soft rocks that includes intermediate principal stress was proposed. The new criterion includes two independent parameters:the uniaxial compressive strength(σ_(ci)),which can be obtained from common laboratory tests or indirectly estimated by alternative index tests in the laboratory or field;and f(joint),which is used to characterize the rock mass quality and can be easily estimated. The authors compared the predictive capabilities of the new criterion with other criteria using the database of soft rocks under two conditions:with and without triaxial data. For the estimation of triaxial and true-triaxial strengths, the new criterion generally produced a better fit.The proposed criterion is practical for an approximate first estimation of rock mass strength, even without triaxial data,as it balances accuracy(lower prediction error)and simplicity(fewer independent parameters). 展开更多

During high-intensity,fully mechanized mining of extra-thick coal seam, the top coal would cave to a certain 3D form.Based on the data collected during drilling,a 3D model of top coal caving surface space was established to determine the relationship between the location of the stope roof and the caving surface, enabling the mathematical computation of the top caving angle(φ).The drilling method was employed to measure the top caving angle on two extra-thick fully mechanized coal caving faces under the conditions of three geological structures, namely,no geological structure, igneous rock structure, and fault structure. The results show that the value of top caving angle could be accurately estimated on-site with the 9-parameter 3D top coal caving surface model built with the drilling method. This method is a novel on-site measurement that can be easily applied. Our findings reveal that the characteristics of the coal-rock in the two mining faces are different;yet their caving angles follow the ruleφ_(igneous rock structure)<φ_(no geological structure)<φ_(fault structure). Finally, through the data fitting with two indexes(the top coal uniaxial compressive strength and the top caving angle),it is found that the relationship between the two indexes satisfies an exponential decay function. 展开更多

Rocks encountered in foundations of heavy structures are invariably intersected by discontinuities(joints). In the past, several studies have been performed by researchers to incorporate the effect of fully persistent joints in the assessment of the load-carrying capacity of rocks. However,in the field, the joints are non-persistent,and an assumption of full persistency will underestimate the capacity.Recently,Shaunik&Singh have studied the influence of non-persistency,number of joint segments and discontinuity orientation on the strength behaviour of rock specimens(Shaunik and Singh,2019).Bell’s approach can be used to obtain the bearing capacity of shallow foundations placed in jointed rocks. In the present study, results of the experimental work(Shaunik and Singh,2019)conducted by Shaunik&Singh have been used to suggest expressions by extending Bell’s approach for computing bearing capacity of the foundation placed near the crown of a rock slope.Easy to use design charts are also presented for field application. Finally,a real-life problem from Indian Garhwal Himalayas is considered, and the approach suggested in this study is utilised to obtain the bearing capacity of a bridge foundation as a function of uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of intact rock, joint friction, spacing and orientation of joint, nonpersistency and number of joint segments. 展开更多
