The present study was conducted to evaluate the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of the essential oils and ethanol extracts of Ocimum basilicum L.obtained from Assiut,Minia and BeniSuef of Egypt. The major constituents of sweet basil essential oils from three locations were linalool, estragole, methyl cinnamate,bicyclosesquiphellandrene,eucalyptol,-bergamotene,eugenol,-cadinene and germacrene D by the method of GC–MS.The relative concentration of these compounds varies. The basil extracts contained appreciable levels of total phenolic contents and exhibited good DPPH radical scavenging capacity higher than that of essential oils. The highest TPC(82.45 mg PE/g)and maximum radical scavenging activity with IC50 value(1.29 mg/mL)was obtained from Minia basil extract.High correlation between antioxidant activity and total phenolic contents of basil extracts was observed.High variation in free radical scavenging activity of essential oils was found. The essential oil from Minia basil showed high activity in DPPH radical scavenging with IC50(11.23 mg/mL)and contained the highest content of phenolic(41.3 mg PE/g).On contrary, low correlation between antioxidant activity and total phenolic contents of basil essential oils from different locations. The results of the present investigation demonstrated significant variations in the antioxidant activities of sweet basil essential oils and extracts from Egypt. 展开更多

This study evaluated the effects of worm infection on the volatile components, total phenolic compounds, and antioxidant capacities of Gomphidius rutilus.G.rutilus without worms(GW),G.rutilus infected by a small amount of worms(GS;infected area<50%),and G.rutilus infected by a large amount of worms(GL;infected area>50%)were investigated. The volatile components of G.rutilus were analyzed by simultaneous distillation–extraction(SDE)and headspace solid-phase microextraction(HS-SPME)using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry(GC–MS).A total of 17 and 19 types of volatile compounds were detected, including ketones, alcohols, benzene, alkenes, aldehydes, esters, acids, and alkanes.Alcohols comprised the most abundant compound in GL,GS,and GW.The relative content of 1-octen-3-ol was the highest in all mushrooms. The concentration of eight-carbon(C8)compounds relative to the total volatile compounds varied widely, ranging from 40%(GW)to 64.34%(GS)and 84.42%(GS)and to 91.59%(GL),respectively,among the three samples. The antioxidant capability and the total phenolic contents of G.rutilus were evaluated in this study. The highest total phenolic content(TPC)of 192.23 mg GAE/g was found in GL,which differed significantly(P<0.05)from the latter two samples, whereas the lowest value of 156.11 mg GAE/g was found in GW.ABTS radical cation scavenging activity,FRAP ferric reducing antioxidant capacity(FRAP)radical scavenging activity, and oxygen radical absorbance capacity(ORAC)were investigated to screen the antioxidant properties of extracts. The contents of total phenolic compounds and their antioxidant capacities in vitro showed significant correlations(P<0.01).Among the three types of samples, the phenolic compounds of GL exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity, showing the values of 0.089 mM TE/g for ABTS,0.949 mM Fe^2+E/g for FRAP,and 1.952 M TE/g for ORAC.However, regarding the total antioxidant capacity,GS exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity, showing the values of 0.002648 mM TE/g for ABTS,0.004437 mM Fe^2+E/g for FRAP,and 0.256μM TE/g for ORAC.In conclusion,HS-SPME was more suitable for the extraction of volatile aroma components from G.rutilus.GL had the most abundant aroma components.GL had the highest TPC and antioxidant capacity compared with those of GS and GW,whereas GS showed the opposite results.Interestingly,GS was found to have the highest total antioxidant capacity in vitro.Based on these measured indicators, worm infection had no negative effect on the quality of G.rutilus.Therefore,worm-infected G.rutilus can also be consumed by humans. 展开更多

In this study,we investigated how tree species affect N mineralization in connection to some soil properties and seconder metabolite levels of litter,in the soil of the old-est native forest communities. In the oldest pure communi-ties of Pinus nigra(PN),Fagus orientalis(FO),and Abies bornmuelleriana(AB)in the mountain range of Mount Uludağ,Bursa,Turkey, annual net yield and N mineraliza-tion in the 0-5-and 5-20-cm soil layers were determined in a field incubation study over 1 year.Sampling locations were chosen from 1300 to 1600 m a.s.l.,and moisture content(%),pH,water-holding capacity(%),organic C,total N,and C/N ratio, and annual net mineral N yield of the soil and hydro-lyzed tannic acid and total phenolic compounds in litter were compared for these forest communities.F.orientalis had the highest annual net Nmin yield(43.9±4.8 kg ha^(-1) a^(-1)),P.nigra the lowest(30.5±4.2 kg ha^(-1) a^(-1)).Our findings show that in the oldest forest ecosystems, the seasonal soil moisture content and tree species play an essential role in N cycling and that hydrolyzed tannic acids and total phenolic compounds effectively control N turnover.Tannic acid and total phenolics in the litter were found to inhibit nitrification, but total phenolics were found to stimulate ammonification. 展开更多

In this study,we investigated the effects of environmental factors on plant phenolic variability, seasonal dynamics of total phenolic content(TP),extractable condensed tannins(ECT),protein-bound condensed tannins(PBCT),fiber-bound condensed tannins(FBCT),total condensed tannins(TCT),protein precipitation capacity(PPC)and nutrient content in the branchlets and fine roots of Casuarina equisetifolia.TP and TCT concentrations in branchlets were lowest in the spring, then increased in summer and autumn, similar to the seasonal dynamics in air temperature.TP and TCT concentrations in fine roots were highest in summer, coinciding with heavy precipitation. In general,TP and TCT concentrations were higher in branchlets than in fine roots. No significant difference was found in C concentration among various seasons for either branchlets or fine roots.Branchlets had significantly higher N and P concentrations than fine roots in most seasons. The C/N and N/P ratios in branchlets were significantly lower than in fine roots in all seasons, except summer. The relationship between branchlets and fine roots was significant for C,P and FBCT,but no significant relationships were found for N,TP,ECT,PBCT and TCT.Additionally,TP and TCT content were each significantly correlated with PPC in branchlets and in fine roots. Both TP/N and TCT/N ratios were highest in the autumn for the branchlets and in the summer for fine roots. The results indicate that high temperatures lead to increased tannin production in branchlets, but that the tannin content in fine roots is mainly affected by precipitation.Tannin content was greater in branchlets than in fine roots, which may indicate that selective pressure is greater on branchlets than on fine roots. 展开更多

Background:Vitis vinifera is universally appreciated herb(especially fruit)for their delicacy, nutrition and conventional as functional food.In the present study,we evaluated anti-hypercholesterolemic potential of Vitis vinifera red leaves extract in experimental wistar male rats.Material and methods:Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical screening of vitis vinifera methanolic extract(VVME)and vitis vinifera aqueous extract aqueous(VVAE)extract was carried out to identify the phytoconstituents. The anti-hypercholesterolemic activity was evaluated by inducing hypercholesterolemia with high cholesterol diet for 21 days in experimental animals.During the experimental periods parameters like lipid profile, liver function test, atherogenic index and histopathological studies were analysed. Results:Total tannins, total flavonoids and total phenolic contents were found in major amount in VVME.The lipid levels were significantly attenuated by different doses of VVME and VVAE.Moreover,VVME was found more effective than VVAE and histopathological results confirmed the effectiveness of VVME.Conclusion:It can be concluded that anti-hypercholesterolemic efficacy of Vitis vinifera might be due to presence of active phytoconstituents and its antioxidant efficacy. 展开更多
