王通践行"以行观文"的伦理学批评方法,提出了"文必贯道"的伦理学批评命题,极为重视作家的道德品行和作品的伦理价值。虽然此种批评方法有忽视文学的审美价值之嫌,但却是对儒家伦理学批评传统的继承,也具有重要的当下性意义。王通的这种伦理学批评是为实现其"王道"理想服务的,对其弟子门人及唐代政治文化建设,对其孙王勃的文学革新及文艺思想,对古文运动及宋明理学等都产生了深远的影响。在以伦理政教为中心的文学思想发展史上,王通的文学伦理学批评起到了上承秦汉、下开唐宋的历史作用。
