Understanding the adsorption behavior of heavy metals and metalloids on clay minerals is essential for remediating heavy metal-contaminated soils. The adsorption of heavy metals and metalloids on illite(001)and sodium montmorillonite(Na-MMT)(001)surfaces was investigated using first-principles calculations in this study, especially As atom and H_(3)AsO_(3) molecule. The adsorption energies of the As atom were−1.94 eV on the illite(001)and−0.56 eV on the Na-MMT(001),whereas,the adsorption energies of the H_(3)AsO_(3) molecule were−1.40 eV on illite(001)and−1.01 eV on Na-MMT(001).The above results indicate that the adsorption was more energetically favorable on illite(001).Additionally,compared to Na-MMT(001),there were more significant interactions between the atoms/molecules on the illite(001).After As atom and H_(3)AsO_(3) molecule adsorption, the electrons were transferred from mineral surface atoms to the adsorbates on both illite(001)and Na-MMT(001)surfaces.Moreover,the adsorption of As atom on illite(001)and Na-MMT(001)surfaces were more energy favorable compared to Hg,Cd,and Cr atoms.Overall, this work provides new insights into the adsorption behavior of As atoms and As molecules on illite and Na-MMT.The results indicate that illite rich soils are more prone to contamination by arsenic compared to soils primarily composed of Na-MMT minerals. 展开更多

Cadmium(Cd)or excess copper(Cu)has a great impact in terms of toxicity on living organisms as it severely affects crop growth, yield and food security;thus, warranting appropriate measures for the remediation of Cd or Cu polluted soils.Phytoextraction of heavy metal(HM)using tolerant plants along with organic chelators has gained global attention, and this study provided further insights into this issue.Pot experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of different types of chelators[ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid(EDTA),ethylenediamine disuccinic acid(EDDS)and citric acid(CA)]to improve the phytoextraction capacity of Ricinus communis L.for the metals Cd and Cu.Contaminated soil from a copper smelter was used in this study.A rhizon soil sampler was used to determine the metal concentrations in soil pore water. The results indicated that R.communis was an adequate candidate for chelator induced phytoextraction under the experimental conditions and that EDDS would be a good candidate chelator for the phytoextraction of Cu in soils.EDTA addition obviously improved the uptake of Cd and Cu in R.communis;however,it posed the greatest risk because the concentration of HMs in soil pore water was very high even after 40 days.Compared with EDTA and EDDS,CA had few effects on Cd or Cu uptake in R.communis.Linear relationships between the metal uptake in R.communis shoots and the maximum HM concentrations in soil pore water under HM,2.5,5,and 10 mmol·kg^(-1) treatments were typically observed. From the results of this study,it could be concluded that EDDS treatments played a promising role in increasing the uptake of Cd or Cu and reducing its phytotoxicity.EDDS application could be an effective approach for the phytoextraction of Cd or Cu from polluted soils by growing Ricinus communis L. 展开更多

Total concentrations of arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury, nickel, chromium, and copper in the soils from near a coal mine area in southwest Guizhou, China, were measured to evaluate the level of contamination, and the potential ecological risks posed by the heavy metals were quantitatively estimated. Results reveal that all heavy metals/metalloid exceeded the background values for soil environmental quality of heavy metals in Guizhou area. Geo-accumulation index(I_(geo)) showed that arsenic had the highest contamination level(I_(geo)=4) among the seven heavy metals/metalloid, and the contamination levels of mercury and lead were also relatively high(I_(geo)=3). Pearson correlation and cluster analysis identified that mercury, copper and arsenic had a relationship, and their presence might be mainly related to mining activity, coal and oil combustion, and vehicle emissions. Improved Nemerow index indicated that the overall level of heavy metal contamination in the studied area ranged from moderately–heavily contaminated to heavily contaminated level. Potential ecological risk index(R_I) analysis manifested that the whole ecological risk level ranged from high degree to very high degree(325.30≤R_I≤801.02) in the studied soil samples, and the potential ecological risk factors (E_r^i) of heavy metals/metalloid were as follows: Hg > As > Cd > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr, and the E_r^i of Hg and As reached very high risk grade. 展开更多

The treatment of contaminated soil is a crucial issue in geotechnical and environmental engineering. This study proposes to incorporate appropriate polypropylene fibers and cements as an effective method to treat heavy metal contaminated soil(HMCS).The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of fiber content, fiber length, cement content, curing time, heavy metal types and concentration on the mechanical properties of soils. To this end,a series of direct shear test, unconfined compression strength(UCS)test,dry-wet cycle and freeze-thaw cycle test are performed. The results confirm that the appropriate reinforcement of polypropylene fibers and cement is an effective way to recycle HMCS as substitutable fillers in roadbed, which exhibits benefits in environment and economy development. 展开更多

Solidification/stabilization (S/S) is one of the most effective methods of dealing with heavy metal contaminated soils. The effects of cyclic wetting and drying on solidified/stabilized contaminated soils were investigated. A series of test program, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, TCLP leaching test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test, were performed on lead and zinc contaminated soils solidified/stabilized by fly ash. Test results show that UCS and the leaching characteristics of heavy metal ions of S/S contaminated soils are significantly improved with the increase of fly ash content. UCS of S/S soils firstly increases with the increase of the times of drying and wetting cycles, after reaching the peak, it decreases with it. When the pollutant content is lower (1 000 mg/kg), the TCLP concentration first slightly decreases under cyclic drying and wetting, then increases, but the change is minor. The TCLP concentration is higher under a high pollutant content of 5 000 mg/kg, and increases with the increase of the times of drying and wetting cycles. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test are consistent with UCS tests and TCLP leaching tests, which reveals the micro-mechanism of the variations of engineering properties of stabilized contaminated soils after drying and wetting cycles. 展开更多

This study presents a comprehensive comparison of the electro-osmosis treatments of heavy metal contaminated soil using electrokinetic geosynthetics(EKG)and iron electrodes in terms of both theoretical analysis and experimental research. The variation in the electrical parameters was analyzed, and the results show linear relationships between temperature and conductivity and between the soil and pore water conductivities. The average cathode contact resistance of iron is60%smaller than that of EKG,whereas the average anode contact resistance of EKG is56%smaller than that of iron. The values of the power consumption per unit mass of contaminants for EKG and iron are1.895and1.989kJ/g,respectively.After electro-osmosis,the number of soil pores increased, but the average area decreased, with an average area of0.9100–1.0504μm^2.Based on microstructure analysis,we obtained higher electroosmotic efficiency and realized the effective analysis and utilization between macroscopic and microscopic parameters. 展开更多

Potentially toxic metals,Cd and Pb in paddy soil, have important meanings for safety of rice.A comparison extraction of Cd and Pb with EDTA,DTPA,citric acid, and FeCl3 and effects on soil fertility was studied. Results indicate that about 59%and 63%of soil Cd and Pb were simultaneously removed by 10 g/L EDTA at pH 5 with a soil/extractant ratio of 1:10(W/V)for 30 min while 52%and 51%by 5 g/L DTPA.Acid extractable and reducible Cd by EDTA and DTPA contributed 58%and 53%of the removals and acid extractable and reducible Pb were about 49%and 41%,respectively.Slight changes of soil fertility, including pH,cation exchange capacity, organic matter, and soil extractable phosphorus, were observed.Extractions of citric acid and ferric chloride, however, were only efficient for Cd and the soil pH was decreased significantly. This study suggests that EDTA and DTPA can be considered as suitable agents to clean up the paddy soils contaminated with potentially toxic metals. 展开更多

Diesel contaminated soil(DCS) contained a large amount of the hydrocarbons and salt which was dominated by soluble sodium chloride. Aggregation process which made the desired aggregate size distribution could speed up the degradation rate of the hydrocarbons since the aggregated DCS had better physical characteristics than the non-aggregated material. Artificial aggregation increased pores 〉30 μm by approximately 5% and reduced pores 〈1 μm by 5%, but did not change the percentage of the pores between 1 and 30 μm. The saturated hydraulic conductivity of non-aggregated DCS was 5×10-6 m · s-l, but it increased to 1×10-5 m · s-l after aggregation. The compression index of the non-aggregated DCS was 0.0186; however, the artificial aggregates with and without lime were 0.031 and 0.028, respectively. DCS could be piled 0.2 m deep without artificial aggregation; however, it could be applied 0.28 m deep when artificial aggregates were formed without limiting O2 transport. 展开更多

Plant uptake of contaminants provides vital information for the reclamation of large area of contaminated soils.A field experiment was conducted using four plant species growing in four kinds of oil contaminated soils to estimate the uptake of organic and inorganic contaminants by plants from the oil contaminated soils. The experiment showed that the concentrations of some selected elements, such as B,Co and Ni in plants growing in the oil contaminated soils were significantly higher than those in plants growing in the uncontaminated control soil. The accumulation of metals in plants increased with plant biomass;however, the removal of metals by plants from the oil contaminated soils was not practical. 展开更多
