To weaken the basal texture and in-plane anisotropy of magnesium alloy, non-basal slips are pre-enhanced by pre-rolling with a single pass larger strain reduction at elevated temperatures. Then Mg alloy sheets with the thickness of 1 mm are achieved after five passes rolling at 300 ℃. A double peak and disperse basal texture is generated after pre- rolling at higher temperatures when the non-basal slips are more active. So, the texture intensity of pre-rolled samples is reduced. Moreover, the distribution condition of in-grain misorientation axes (a method to analyze the activation of slips) shows that the pyramidal slip is quite active during deformation. After annealing on final rolled sheets, the texture distributions are changed and the intensity of texture reduces obviously due to static recrystallization. In particular, the r-value and in-plane anisotropy of pre-rolled samples are obviously lower than those of sample without pre-rolling. 展开更多

At present, the most common preparation method of amorphous boron powder is magnesium thermal reduction method, but the amorphous boron powder obtained by this method mostly contains impurities such as magnesium and oxygen which are difficult to remove, and these impurities will seriously affect the application of amorphous boron powder and need to be strictly removed. In this research, the acid-insoluble impurities were modified through sintering and quenching, while the magnesium impurities were optimized via ultrasonic acid leaching. We observed that the quenching temperature played a crucial role in determining the efficiency of magnesium impurity removal. The results show that the magnesium content in amorphous boron powder can be reduced from 5.67%to 2.40%by quenching the amorphous boron powder at 800°C and using ultrasonic assisted acid leaching.Furthermore, the oxidation reaction of boron is influenced by the powder's particle size and specific surface area, with the effective activation energy being intimately tied to both these factors.Post-quenching and acid leaching,we observed an increase in the specific surface area of the boron powder samples, leading to enhanced activity. In conclusion, our study presents an effective strategy to mitigate magnesium impurities and elevate the performance of amorphous boron powder, offering promising avenues for advancing its utilization across diverse industries. 展开更多

Magnesium alloys as medical implant materials necessitate a lower and adjustable corrosion rate for clinical applications. The microstructure and corrosion behavior of AZ31Mn-xEr(x=0.1,0.5,1.2)alloys were systematically investigated using optical microscopy(OM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),combined with Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)analyses. The findings showed that the alloying element Er refined the grain structure during solidification by increasing the nucleation rate and forming a secondary phase of Al_(3)Er with Al.The Er and Mg in the matrix co-oxidize to form a dense MgO/Er_(2)O_(3)composite oxide, preventing the formation of loose magnesium hydroxide/basic magnesium carbonate. The trace alloying element Mn interacts with impurities Fe in the magnesium matrix to form an AlFeMn second phase, reducing micro-galvanic corrosion driving force.Electrochemical testing in a 3.5%NaCl solution demonstrated a marked reduction in corrosion rate from 10.46 mm/a(AZ 31 Mn alloy)to 0.44 mm/a(AZ31Mn-1.2Er alloy). This research offers a reference for searching for corrosion-resistant magnesium alloy and degradable medical magnesium alloy materials. 展开更多

The pure Mg with columnar crystals was prepared by directional solidification, and the effect of process parameters on the crystal orientation and tensile properties was studied. Moreover, the microstructure evolution during tensile deformation was analyzed by electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD)technology.Furthermore, the slip within adjacent grains and grain boundary strain were discussed using the bicrystal model theory. The results show that the microstructure of the pure Mg at a pulling rate of 200μm/s is columnar polycrystal with growth orientation concentrated in<022ˉ5>,and no transverse grain boundaries can be seen.In addition, the Schmid factors(SFs)of basalslips in columnar crystals are higher than 0.43 under tensile stress. Moreover, the geometric compatibility factor of slip systems on both sides of grain boundaries is greater than 0.7,showing good strain coordination ability of grain boundaries. Therefore, the elongation of the directionally solidified pure Mg is as high as 53%at room temperature. 展开更多

The flame propagation processes of MgH_(2)dust clouds with four different particle sizes were recorded by a high-speed camera. The dynamic flame temperature distributions of MgH_(2)dust clouds were reconstructed by the two-color pyrometer technique, and the chemical composition of solid combustion residues were analyzed. The experimental results showed that the average flame propagation velocities of 23μm,40μm,60μm and 103μm MgH_(2)dust clouds in the stable propagation stage were 3.7 m/s,2.8 m/s,2.1 m/s and 0.9 m/s,respectively.The dust clouds with smaller particle sizes had faster flame propagation velocity and stronger oscillation intensity, and their flame temperature distributions were more even and the temperature gradients were smaller. The flame structures of MgH_(2)dust clouds were significantly affected by the particle sinking velocity, and the combustion processes were accompanied by micro-explosion of particles. The falling velocities of 23μm and 40μm MgH_(2)particles were 2.24 cm/s and 6.71 cm/s,respectively.While the falling velocities of 60μm and 103μm MgH_(2)particles were as high as 15.07 cm/s and 44.42 cm/s,respectively,leading to a more rapid downward development and irregular shape of the flame.Furthermore, the dehydrogenation reaction had a significant effect on the combustion performance of MgH_(2)dust.The combustion of H_(2)enhanced the ignition and combustion characteristics of MgH_(2)dust,resulting in a much higher explosion power than the pure Mg dust. The micro-structure characteristics and combustion residues composition analysis of MgH_(2)dust indicated that the combustion control mechanism of MgH_(2)dust flame was mainly the heterogeneous reaction, which was affected by the dehydrogenation reaction. 展开更多

The process of preparing anodic oxide film containing active sites and electroless nickel plating on highly active rare earth magnesium alloy was developed. The formation mechanism of electroless nickel plating on active anodic oxide film and the structure and properties of the composite coating were studied by several surface and electrochemical techniques. The results showed that Ag nanograins with an average size of 10 nm were embedded into the anodic oxide film with pores of 0.1−2μm.Ag nanoparticles provided a catalytic site for the deposition of Ni-B alloy, and the Ni crystal nucleus was first grown in horizontal mode and then in cylindrical mode. The corrosion potential of the composite coating increased by 1.37 V and the corrosion current reduced two orders of magnitude due to the subsequent deposition of Ni-P alloy. The high corrosion resistance was attributed to the misaligning of these micro defects in the three different layers and the amorphous structure of the Ni-P alloy in the outer layer. These findings provide a new idea for electroless nickel plating on anodic oxide film. 展开更多

Corrosion caused by sulfate-reducing prokaryotes(SRP)is an important cause of magnesium alloy anode failure in oil pipeline. In this study, the effects of Desulfovibrio sp.HQM3 on the corrosion behavior of AZ31B magnesium alloy anode in organic carbon sources with different contents in simulated tidal flat environment were analyzed using weight loss test, surface analysis and electrochemical analysis technologies. The results showed that the weight loss rate of coupons in low carbon sources contents(0%,1%,10%)was higher than that in 100%carbon sources.Electrochemical analyses showed that the corrosion current density(J_(corr))under low carbon sources contents was larger, while the charge transfer resistance(R_(ct))was lower, leading to a higher corrosion rate compared to those under 100%carbon sources content.Observations from scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM)revealed more severe pitting corrosion on the alloy surface in the absence of carbon sources. In addition,a large number of nanowires were observed between bacteria on the alloy surface using SEM.Combined with thermodynamic calculations,it was demonstrated that the corrosion of coupons by Desulfovibrio sp.HQM3 in the absence of carbon sources was achieved through extracellular electron transfer. 展开更多

Fatigue and tensile behaviors of homogenized WE 54 magnesium alloy before and after immersion in simulated body fluid(SBF)were investigated.According to the tensile test, the alloy without immersion in SBF solution has the highest tensile strength of 278 MPa,which decreased to 190 MPa after 336 h of immersion..The fatigue life of the homogenized WE 54 magnesium alloy before immersion in the SBF solution under a constant stress of 15 MPa is 3598 cycles. However, the fatigue life of the alloy decreased to 453 cycles after 336 h of immersion in the SBF solution under the same stress.Examination of the fracture surface of the samples by SEM reveals that the origin of the fatigue crack before immersion is micro-pores and defects. While corrosion pits and cracks are the main reasons for forming the initial fatigue crack after immersion. Moreover, the results obtained from practical work were evaluated and compared to theoretical calculations. The area of the hysteresis loops of the samples after the fatigue test, determined using Triangles and Monte Carlo methods, decreased from 4954.5 MPa and 4842.9 MPa before immersion to 192.0 MPa and 175.8 MPa after 336 h of immersion, respectively. 展开更多

In recent years, magnesium(Mg)has evolved as a salient material,in affiliation with electroless nickel(Ni)coating, which have found applications in automobiles, aerospace and confederate fields attributing to its excellent inherent weight sensitive properties. However, being acknowledged for its remarkable auxiliary properties like flexible machining, appreciable weight sensitivity and ability to be patently diecast into mesh constructs, magnesium is prejudiced by aeronautical standards predominantly for its inferior corrosion resistance properties. In this sense, electroless nickel plating on magnesium and its alloys has been suggested to extricate it from corrosion problem and make it more competitive in industrial and defence applications.Autocatalytic fixation of metal ions onto respective substrates accrues and alters their mechanical, electrochemical and tribological properties, destitute of any electric current aid. This proficiently identified technique is prosecuted with the assistance of a series of sequenced operations involving a prior pretreatment, which corresponds to the chemical cleaning of the substrate surface;electroless coating;and a later activation process which is a mild etching of the electroless coated surface. The susceptibility of magnesium to this methodology has advanced and propagated its exercise and applicability in aircraft, satellites and allied aeronautical fields.Contemporarily, researchers have proposed various eco-friendly and modified duplex and composite coatings which have transmuted properties of these appendages by tailoring alloy compositions and reagents employed. This review article systematically colligates various considerations and evaluations on electroless nickel applications of magnesium and its alloys and explicates how it anchors its practice in the respective domains.Furthermore,a comprehensive analysis is devised based on the pre-existing treatment methods for accomplishing the same. 展开更多

Ultrasonic vibration can reduce the forming force, decrease the friction in the metal forming process and improve the surface quality of the workpiece effectively. Tensile tests of AZ31 magnesium alloy were carried out. The stress–strain relationship, fracture modes of tensile specimens, microstructure and microhardness under different vibration conditions were analyzed, in order to study the effects of the ultrasonic vibration on microstructure and performance of AZ31 magnesium alloy under tensile deformation. The results showed that the different reductions of the true stress appeared under various ultrasonic vibration conditions, and the maximum decreasing range was 4.76%. The maximum microhardness difference among the 3 nodes selected along the specimen was HV 10.9. The fracture modes, plasticity and microstructure of AZ31 magnesium alloy also were affected by amplitude and action time of the ultrasonic vibration. The softening effect and the hardening effect occurred simultaneously when the ultrasonic vibration was applied. When the ultrasonic amplitude was 4.6 μm with short action time, the plastic deformation was dominated by twins and the softening effect was dominant. However, the twinning could be inhibited and the hardening effect became dominant in the case of high ultrasonic energy. 展开更多

The microstructure and Gd-rich phase evolution of as-cast AZ31-xGd(x=0,1.5 wt.%,2.0 wt.%and 2.5 wt.%)magnesium alloys during semi-solid isothermal heat treatment were investigated deeply in the present work. Results showed that the lamellar(Mg,Al)3Gd phases transformed into the particle-like Al2Gd phases in AZ31 magnesium alloys with Gd addition during semi-solid isothermal heat treatment, leading to yielding more sphericalα-Mg grains. When Gd content is 2.0 wt.%,the size of semi-solid spherical grains reaches the minimum. The main mechanism of grain refinement lies in the remelting of dendritic branches as well as the auxiliary effect of a small number of Al2Gd particles as grain refining inoculants.Meanwhile,Al2Gd particles enriched at the solid-liquid interfaces can remarkably retard the growth rate ofα-Mg grains.A reduction of deformation resistance has been successfully achieved in AZ31-2.0Gd magnesium alloy after semi-solid isothermal heat treatment, which shows a moderate compressive deformation resistance(230 MPa),comparing to the as-cast AZ31 magnesium alloy(280 MPa)and semi-solid AZ31 magnesium alloy(209 MPa). 展开更多

In this paper the effect of pouring temperature of magnesium melt, preheating temperature of the barrel of screw mixer and shear rate on the solidified microstructures of semi-solid slurry was investigated by mechanical stirring method. The appropriate processing parameters of slurry preparation were obtained. The mold filling for thin walled casting was examined. Results indicated that the solid volume fraction of non-dendritic structure increased with decrease in pouring temperature of magnesium melt and the barrel preheating temperature of screw mixer. Also the grain size of primary α phase was reduced. Furthermore, the solid volume fraction of semi-solid non-dendritic structure decreased with the increase in shear rate. In the same time, grain size of primary α phase slightly changed. The fine-round granular solidified structure with 30~50 μm of prepared AZ91D magnesium semi-solid slurry was presented. Finally, it is successful to fabricate 1.0 mm extremely thin walled casting with clear contour and good soundness. 展开更多

In order to simulate and study the mechanism of cement stabilized soils polluted by different contents of magnesium sulfate(MS), a series of tests were conducted on the cemented soil samples, including unconfined compression strength(UCS) tests of blocks, X-ray diffraction(XRD) phase analysis of powder samples, microstructure by scanning electronic microscopy(SEM),element composition by energy dispersive spectrometry(EDS), and pore distribution analysis by Image Processed Plus 6.0(IPP 6.0)software. The UCS test results show that UCS of cemented soils reaches the peak value when the MS content is 4.5 g/kg. While, the UCS for Sample MS4 having the MS content of 18.0 g/kg is the lowest among all tested samples. Based on the EDS analysis results,Sample MS4 has the greater contents for the three elements, oxygen(O), magnesium(Mg) and sulfur(S), than Sample MS1. From the XRD phase analysis, C-A-S-H(3Ca O·Al2O3·3Ca SO4·32H2O and 3Ca O·Al2O3·Ca SO4·18H2O), M-A-H(Mg O·Al2O3·H2O), M-S-H(Mg O·Si O2·H2O), Mg(OH)2 and Ca SO4 phase diffraction peaks are obviously intense due to the chemical action associated with the MS. The pore distribution analysis shows that the hydrated products change the distribution of cemented soil pores and the pores with average diameter(AD) of 2-50 μm play a key role in terms of the whole structure of cemented soil. The microscopic structure of the cemented soil with MS exhibits the intertwined and embedded characteristics between the cement and granular soils from the SEM images of cemented soils. The microstructure analysis shows that the magnesium sulfate acts as the additive, which is beneficial to the soil strength when the MS content is low(i.e., Sample MS2). However, higher MS amount involving a chemical action makes samples crystallize and expand, which is adverse to the UCS of cemented soils(i.e., Sample MS4). 展开更多

The effects of H3PO4 and Ca(H2PO4)2 on compressive strength, water resistance, hydration process of thermally decomposed magnesium oxychloride cement (TDMOC) pastes were studied. The mineral composition, hydration products and hydration heat release were analyzed by XRD, FT-IR, SEM and TAM air isothermal calorimeter, etc. After being modified by H3PO4 and Ca(HzPO4)2, the properties of the TDMOC are improved obviously. The compressive strength increases from 14.8 MPa to 48.1 MPa and 37.1 MPa, respectively. The strength retention coefficient (Kn) increases from 0.38 to 0.99 and 0.94, respectively. The 24 h hydration heat release decreases by 10% and 4% and the time of hydration peak appearing is delayed from 1 h to about 10 h. The XRD, FT-IR and SEM results show that the main composition is 5Mg(OH)z'MgCIz'8H20 in the modified TDMOC pastes. The possible mechanism for the strength enhancement was discussed. The purposes are to extend the potential applications of the salt lake magnesium resources and to improve the mechanical properties of TDMOC. 展开更多

Magnesium hydroxide(Mg(OH)2)has been considered as a potential solvent for CO2 removal of coal-fired power plant and biomass gas.The chemistry action and mass to transfer mechanism of CO2-H2O-Mg(OH)2 system in a slurry bubble column reactor was described, and a reliable computational model was developed. The overall mass transfer coefficient and surface area per unit volume were obtained using experimental approach and simulation with software assistance. The results show that the mass transfer process of CO2 absorbed by Mg(OH)2 slurry is mainly liquid-controlled,and slurry concentration and temperature are main contributory factors of volumetric mass transfer coefficient and liquid side mass transfer coefficient.High concentration of CO2 has an adverse effect on its absorption because it leads to the fast deposition of MgCO3·3H2O crystals on the surfaces of unreacted Mg(OH)2 particles, reducing the utilization ratio of magnesium hydroxide.Meanwhile, high CO3^2– ion concentration limits the dissolution of MgCO3 to absorb CO2 continually.Concentration of 0.05 mol/L Mg(OH)2,15%vol CO2 gas and operation temperature at 35℃are recommended for this CO2 capture system. 展开更多

In order to expand the application of the basic magnesium carbonate in the field of flame retardant, the plate-like basic magnesium carbonate(Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2.4H2O)was prepared successfully by template-mediated/homogeneous precipitation method, using magnesium chloride hexahydrate(MgCl2.6H2O)and urea(CO(NH2)2)as reaction materials.Phase and morphology of the product were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM)and atomic force microscope(AFM),respectively. The results showed that well-crystallized plate-like Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2.4H2O can be prepared at the water bath temperature of 100°C,water bath time of 24 h,the aging time of 5 h after adding organic template agent. The investigation on organic template mediated mechanism shows that the template affects the crystal morphology by changing surface energy of different crystal plane.Through a preliminary study on the growth mechanism of the product,it is found that the generation of the plate-like Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2.4H2O could be explained by two-dimensional nucleation/step growth mechanism. 展开更多

The influence of chemical composition on corrosion resistance of AZ91D magnesium alloys ingots has been investigated. Mass loss method was applied to evaluate the corrosion resistance of AZ91D alloys and the data were analyzed by multiple regression. The results show that the corrosion resistance of this alloy can be improved by increasing Al, Zn and Mn in a certain degree, and will drop with increasing Si and heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Ni). It is found that ingots received from company F should be listed into unusable materials in terms of the corrosion resistance, while among the five suppliers, the only local company E supplied excellent AZ91D magnesium alloy ingots with the best corrosion resistance. 展开更多
