Microseismic monitoring system is one of the effective methods for deep mining geo-stress monitoring. The principle of microseismic monitoring system is to analyze the mechanical parameters contained in microseismic events for providing accurate information of rockmass. The accurate identification of microseismic events and blasts determines the timeliness and accuracy of early warning of microseismic monitoring technology. An image identification model based on Convolutional Neural Network(CNN)is established in this paper for the seismic waveforms of microseismic events and blasts.Firstly, the training set, test set,and validation set are collected, which are composed of 5250,1500,and 750 seismic waveforms of microseismic events and blasts, respectively. The classified data sets are preprocessed and input into the constructed CNN in CPU mode for training. Results show that the accuracies of microseismic events and blasts are 99.46%and 99.33%in the test set, respectively. The accuracies of microseismic events and blasts are 100%and 98.13%in the validation set, respectively. The proposed method gives superior performance when compared with existed methods. The accuracies of models using logistic regression and artificial neural network(ANN)based on the same data set are 54.43%and 67.9%in the test set, respectively. Then, the ROC curves of the three models are obtained and compared, which show that the CNN gives an absolute advantage in this classification model when the original seismic waveform are used in training the model. It not only decreases the influence of individual differences in experience, but also removes the errors induced by source and waveform parameters. It is proved that the established discriminant method improves the efficiency and accuracy of microseismic data processing for monitoring rock instability and seismicity. 展开更多

This paper presents a time-efficient numerical approach to modelling high explosive(HE)blastwave propagation using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD).One of the main issues of using conventional CFD modelling in high explosive simulations is the ability to accurately define the initial blastwave properties that arise from the ignition and consequent explosion.Specialised codes often employ Jones-Wilkins-Lee(JWL)or similar equation of state(EOS)to simulate blasts. However, most available CFD codes are limited in terms of EOS modelling. They are restrictive to the Ideal Gas Law(IGL)for compressible flows, which is generally unsuitable for blast simulations. To this end, this paper presents a numerical approach to simulate blastwave propagation for any generic CFD code using the IGL EOS.A new method known as the Input Cavity Method(ICM)is defined where input conditions of the high explosives are given in the form of pressure, velocity and temperature time-history curves. These time history curves are input at a certain distance from the centre of the charge. It is shown that the ICM numerical method can accurately predict over-pressure and impulse time history at measured locations for the incident, reflective and complex multiple reflection scenarios with high numerical accuracy compared to experimental measurements. The ICM is compared to the Pressure Bubble Method(PBM),a common approach to replicating initial conditions for a high explosive in Finite Volume modelling. It is shown that the ICM outperforms the PBM on multiple fronts, such as peak values and overall overpressure curve shape. Finally, the paper also presents the importance of choosing an appropriate solver between the Pressure Based Solver(PBS)and Density-Based Solver(DBS)and provides the advantages and disadvantages of either choice. In general,it is shown that the PBS can resolve and capture the interactions of blastwaves to a higher degree of resolution than the DBS.This is achieved at a much higher computational cost, showing that the DBS is much preferred for quick turnarounds. 展开更多

Due to space constraints in mountainous areas, twin tunnels are sometimes constructed very close to each other or even overlap. This proximity challenges the structural stability of tunnels built with the drill-and-blast method,as the short propagation distance amplifies blasting vibrations.A case of blasting damage is reported in this paper, where concrete cracks crossed construction joints in the twin-arch lining. To identify the causes of these cracks and develop effective vibration mitigation measures, field monitoring and numerical analysis were conducted.Specifically,a restart method was used to simulate the second peak particle velocity(PPV)of MS3 delays occurring 50 ms after the MS1 delays. The study found that the dynamic tensile stress in the tunnel induced by the blast wave has a linear relationship with the of the product of the concrete wave impedance and the PPV.A blast vibration velocity exceeding 23.3 cm/s resulted in tensile stress in the lining surpassing the ultimate tensile strength of C30 concrete, leading to tensile cracking on the blast-facing arch of the constructed tunnel. To control excessive vi-bration velocity,a mitigation trench was implemented to reduce blast wave impact. The trench, approximately 15 m in length,50 cm in width, and 450 cm in height, effectively lowered vibration ve-locities,achieving an average reduction rate of 52%according to numerical analysis.A key innovation of this study is the on-site implementation and validation of the trench's effectiveness in mitigating vi-brations.A feasible trench construction configuration was proposed to overcome the limitations of a single trench in fully controlling vibrations. To further enhance protection, zoned blasting and an auxiliary rock pillar,80 cm in width, were incorporated to reinforce the mid-wall.This study introduces novel strategies for vibration protection in tunnel blasting, offering innovative solutions to address blasting-induced vibrations and effectively minimize their impact, thereby enhancing safety and struc-tural stability. 展开更多

The present technical paper outlines the details of the controlled blasting techniques used to optimize blasting pattern for excavation of hard rock near the Bhira Earthen Dam in Maharashtra,India. In this connection,a series of experimental blasts were conducted by adjusting various blast design parameters at project site. The safe charge weight per delay was kept between 0.125 and 0.375 kg.The outcomes of these experimental blasts were analyzed to recommend optimized blasting patterns and methods for the overall excavation process during actual blasting operations.Blast design parameters, including the maximum quantity of explosive per delay, hole depth, burden and spacing between holes were optimized by using a site-specific attenuation equation, taking into account the proximity of the dam and tunnel from the blasting area.Peak particle velocity(PPV)level of 10 mm/s and 50 mm/s respectively were adopted as the safe vibration level for ensuring safety of the Bhira Earthen Dam and the nearby tunnel from the adverse effects of blast vibrations by analyzing the dominant frequency of ground vibrations observed and also by reviewing various international standards.Frequency of the ground vibrations observed on the dam and tunnel from majority of the blasts was found to be more than 10 Hz and 50 Hz respectively.During the entire period of blasting, the blast vibrations were recorded to be far lower than the safe vibration level set for these structures.Maximum Vibration level of about 0.8 mm/s and 35 mm/s were observed on dam and tunnel respectively which are far lower than the safe vibration level adopted for these structures.Hence, the entire excavation work was completed successfully and safely, without endangering the safety of dam or tunnel. 展开更多

The muzzle blast overpressure induces disturbances in the flow field inside the crew compartment(FFICC)of a truck-mounted howitzer during the artillery firing. This overpressure is the primary factor preventing personnel from firing artillery within the cab.To investigate the overpressure characteristics of the FFICC,a foreign trade equipment model was used as the research object, and a numerical model was established to analyze the propagation of muzzle blast from the muzzle to the interior of the crew compartment under extreme firing condition. For comparative verification, the muzzle blast experiment included overpressure data from both the flow field outside the crew compartment(FFOCC)and the FFICC,as well as the acceleration data of the crew compartment structure(Str-CC).The research findings demonstrate that the overpressure-time curves of the FFICC exhibit multi-peak characteristics, while the pressure wave shows no significant discontinuity. The enclosed nature of the cab hinders the dissipation of pressure wave energy within the FFICC,leading to sustained high-amplitude overpressure. The frameskin structure helps attenuate the impact of muzzle blast on the FFICC.Conversely, local high overpressure caused by the convex or concave features of the cab's exterior significantly amplifies the overpressure amplitude within the FFICC. 展开更多

Investigating the blast effects and mechanisms on typical finite-sized obstacles is essential for optimizing defense strategies and designing more robust barriers to deter terrorists and protect critical locations. This study investigates the blasting effects and underlying mechanisms of concrete frustums subjected to contact explosions, employing both numerical simulations and field tests. It focuses on the effects of top and side blasting, with particular emphasis on fracture modes, damage patterns, and fragment sizes,as well as the causes of different failure modes and the propagation of stress waves. The study also explores the blasting effects of detonating explosives at varying positions along the side and with different charge amounts. The results show that side-blasting leads to complete fragmentation, with tensile waves playing a significant role in creating extensive damage zones that propagate parallel to the frustum's outer surface, concentrating damage near the surface.During top-blasting,the upper half of the frustum undergoes fragmentation, while the lower half experiences cracking.Tensile waves propagate from the top to the bottom surface, forming larger blocks in regions with lower wave intensity.Three distinct damage zones within the frustum were identified, and a series of mathematical formulas were derived to describe the relationship between the maximum fragment size and charge mass.As the charge mass increased from 1.0 kg to 4.0 kg,the maximum fragment size decreased.Detonation at the center of the frustum's side resulted in the most severe fragmentation, with a 51.8%reduction in fragment size compared to other detonation positions. Finally, four broken modes were classified, each influenced by charge mass and explosive location. This study provides valuable insights for optimizing civil blasting operations and designing protective engineering structures. 展开更多

This study designs four types of liquid-filled cylindrical shell structures to investigate their protection characteristics against explosive shock waves and high-speed fragments.Bare charge and charge-driven prefabricated fragments are employed to examine the damage under blast shock waves and combined blast and fragments loading on various liquid-filled cylindrical shell structures. The test results are compared to numerical calculations and theoretical analysis for the structure's deformation, the liquid medium's movement, and the pressure waves'propagation characteristics under different liquid-filling methods. The results showed that the filling method influences the blast protection and the struc-ture's energy absorption performance. The external filling method reduces the structural deformation, and the internal filling method increases the damage effect. The gapped internal filling method improves the structure's energy absorption efficiency. The pressure wave loading on the liquid-filled cylindrical shell structure differs depending on filling methods.Explosive shock waves and high-speed fragments show a damage enhancement effect on the liquid-filled cylindrical shell structure, depending on the thickness of the internal liquid container layer. The specific impulse on the inner surface of the cylindrical shell positively correlates to the radial deformation of the cylindrical shell structure, and the external liquid layer limits the radial structural deformation. 展开更多

Blast-induced ground vibration, quantified by peak particle velocity(PPV),is a crucial factor in mitigating environmental and structural risks in mining and geotechnical engineering.Accurate PPV prediction facilitates safer and more sustainable blasting operations by minimizing adverse impacts and ensuring regulatory compliance. This study presents an advanced predictive framework integrating Cat Boost(CB)with nature-inspired optimization algorithms, including the Bat Algorithm(BAT),Sparrow Search Algorithm(SSA),Butterfly Optimization Algorithm(BOA),and Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm(GOA).A comprehensive dataset from the Sarcheshmeh Copper Mine in Iran was utilized to develop and evaluate these models using key performance metrics such as the Index of Agreement(IoA),Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency(NSE),and the coefficient of determination(R^(2)).The hybrid CB-BOA model outperformed other approaches, achieving the highest accuracy(R^(2)=0.989)and the lowest prediction errors.SHAP analysis identified Distance(Di)as the most influential variable affecting PPV,while uncertainty analysis confirmed CB-BOA as the most reliable model, featuring the narrowest prediction interval. These findings highlight the effectiveness of hybrid machine learning models in refining PPV predictions, contributing to improved blast design strategies, enhanced structural safety, and reduced environmental impacts in mining and geotechnical engineering. 展开更多

Accurately forecasting the triple point(TP)path is essential for analyzing blast loads and assessing the destructive effectiveness of the height of burst explosion.Empirical models that describe the TP path under normal temperature and pressure environments are commonly employed;however,in certain configurations, such as at high-altitudes(HAs),the environment may involve low temperature and pressure conditions. The present study develops a theoretical prediction model for the TP path under reduced pressure and temperature conditions, utilizing the image bursts method, reflected polar analysis, and dimensional analysis. The model's accuracy is evaluated through numerical simulations and experimental data. Results indicate that the prediction model effectively evaluates the TP path under diminished temperature and pressure conditions, with most predictions falling within a±15%deviation.It was found that the TP height increases with altitude. As the altitude rises from 0 m to 10,000 m,the average TP height increases by 61.7%,87.9%,109.0%,and 134.3%for the scaled height of burst of 1.5 m,2.0 m,2.5 m,and 3.0 m,respectively. Moreover, the variation in TP height under HA environments closely mirrors that observed under corresponding reduced pressure conditions. In HA environments, only the effect of low-pressure conditions on the TP path needs to be considered,as the environmental lowtemperature has a minimal effect. 展开更多

Assessing the vulnerability of a platform is crucial in its design. In fact, the results obtained from vulnerability analyses provide valuable information, leading to precise design choices or corrective solutions that enhance the platform's chances of surviving different scenarios.Such scenarios can involve various types of threats that can affect the platform's survivability.Among such, blast waves impacting the platform's structure represent critical conditions that have not yet been studied in detail. That is,frameworks for vulnerability assessment that can deal with blast loading have not been presented yet.In this context, this work presents a fast-running engineering tool that can quantify the risk that a structure fails when it is subjected to blast loading from the detonation of high explosive-driven threats detonating at various distances from the structure itself. The tool has been implemented in an in-house software that calculates vulnerability to various impacting objects, and its capabilities have been shown through a simplified, yet realistic, case study. The novelty of this research lies in the development of an integrated computational environment capable of calculating the platform's vulnerability to blast waves, without the need for running expensive finite element simulations. In fact, the proposed tool is fully based on analytical models integrated with a probabilistic approach for vulnerability calculation. 展开更多

The detonation of fuel-rich explosives yields combustible products that persistently burn upon mixing with ambient oxygen, releasing additional energy through a phenomenon known as the afterburning effect. This process greatly influences the evolution of confined blast loading and the subsequent structural response, which is crucial in confined blast scenarios.Given the complex nature of the reaction process, accurate analysis of the afterburning effect remains challenging.Previous studies have either overlooked the mechanisms of detonation product combustion or failed to provide experimental validation. This study introduces a three-dimensional model to effectively characterize the combustion of detonation products. The model integrates chemical reaction source terms into the governing equations to consider the combustion processes.Numerical simulations and experimental tests were conducted to analyze the combustion and energy release from the detonation products of fuel-rich explosives in confined spaces.Approximately 50%of the energy was released during the combustion of detonation products in a confined TNT explosion.Although the combustion of these products was much slower than the detonation process,it aligned with the dynamic response of the structure, which enhanced the explosive yield.Excluding afterburning from the analysis reduced the center-point deformation of the structure by 30%.Following the inclusion of afterburning, the simulated quasistatic pressure increased by approximately 45%.Subsequent comparisons highlighted the merits of the proposed approach over conventional methods. This approach eliminates the reliance on empirical parameters, such as the amount and rate of energy release during afterburning, thereby laying the foundation for understanding load evolution in more complex environments, such as ships, buildings, and underground tunnels. 展开更多

The concept of TNT(Trinitrotoluene,C_7H_5N_3O_6)equivalence is often invoked to evaluate the performance and predict the explosion parameters of different types of explosives. However, due to its low prediction accuracy and limited application range, the use of TNT equivalence for predicting explosion parameters in a confined space is rare.Compared with explosions in free fields, the process of explosive energy release in a confined space is closely related to various factors such as oxygen balance, combustible components content, and surrounding oxygen content.Studies have shown that in a confined space, negative oxygen balance explosives react with surrounding oxygen during afterburning, resulting in additional energy release and enhanced blast effects. The mechanism of energy release during afterburning is highly complex, making it challenging to determine the TNT equivalence for blast effects in a confined space. Therefore, this remains an active area of research. In this study, internal blast experiments were conducted using TNT and three other explosives under both air and N_2(Nitrogen)conditions to obtain explosion parameters including blast wave overpressure,quasi-static pressure, and temperature. The influences of oxygen balance and external oxygen content on energy release are analyzed. The author proposes principles for determining TNT equivalence for internal explosions while verifying the accuracy of obtained blast parameters through calculations based on TNT equivalence. These findings can serve as references for predicting blast performance. 展开更多

To investigate the explosion load characteristics and structural response law in a water mist environment in a cabin, explosion experiments are carried out.The weakening rates of the initial peak overpressure, quasistatic pressure and structural residual deflection increase with increasing working pressure of the water mist nozzle.Specifically, the weakening rate of the initial peak overpressure ranges from 7.8%to 31.0%,the quasistatic pressure weakening rate ranges from 29.2%to 41.0%,and the weakening rate of the center of the plate residual deflection ranges from 10.8%to 34.4%under the various working pressures of the nozzles. To further explore the effect of water mist explosion suppression,a method for three-dimensional numerical simulations of water mist weakening the explosion shock wave is established to explore the explosion load characteristics of the compartment and the bulkhead response law.On the basis of the dimension analysis method, empirical formulas are derived to predict the residual deflection thickness in the center of the bulkheads. These findings provide the fundamental basis for the appli-cation of water mist in anti-explosive protection. 展开更多

Ferrite-rich calcium sulfoaluminate(FCSA)cement is often used in special projects such as marine engineering due to its excellent resistance of seawater attack although the cost is a little high.Ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS),a byproduct of industrial production,is used as a mineral admixture to reduce concrete costs and provide excellent performance. This study aimed to investigate the impact of GGBS on the hydration properties of FCSA cement in seawater.Tests were conducted on heat of hydration, compressive strength, mass change, and pH value of pore solution of FCSA cement paste with a water-to-binder ratio of 0.45.X-ray diffraction(XRD)analysis and thermogravimetric analysis were used to determine the hydration products, while mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP)was used to measure pore structure. The results indicated that the FCSA cement hydration showed a concentrated heat release at early age.The compressive strength of specimens consistently increased over time, where seawater curing enhanced the compressive strength of control samples. The pH value of pore solution decreased to 10.7−10.9 at 90 d when cured in seawater. The primary hydration products of FCSA cement included ettringite, iron hydroxide gel(FH_(3)),and aluminum hydroxide gel(AH_(3)).Moreover,when cured in seawater,Friedel’s salt was formed, which enhanced the compressive strength of the specimen and increased its coefficient of corrosion.Seawater curing gradually increased sample mass, and GGBS refined pore structure while reducing harmful pore proportions. These results suggest that while GGBS can refine pore structure and improve certain aspects of performance, its inclusion may also reduce compressive strength, highlighting the need for a balanced approach in its use for marine applications. 展开更多

Most of the existing studies on tunnel blast wave are based on spherical or grouped charges, however, conventional weapons are mostly cylindrical rather than spherical. In order to analyze the impact of cylindrical charges on the tunnel blast wave loads and to develop a quantitative calculation method, this study carried out experimental and numerical research. Initially, external explosion experiments were conducted using both 35 kg spherical charges and cylindrical charges with aspect ratio of 4.8 at two different distances from the tunnel entrance. Comparative analysis of the blast wave parameters in the tunnel revealed that the explosive equivalent of the cylindrical charges was significantly higher than that of the spherical charges. To address this, an equivalent coefficient κ based on the spherical charges was proposed for the cylindrical charges. Subsequently, numerical simulations were conducted for the experimental conditions, and the numerical simulation results match the experiments well. Through numerical calculations, the reliability of the equivalent coefficient κ under the experimental conditions was verified, and comparison analysis indicated that the explosion energy of cylindrical charges spreads more radially, resulting in more explosion energy entering the tunnel, which is the fundamental reason for the increase in tunnel blast wave loads. Additionally, analyzing the explosion energy ratio entering the tunnel is an effective method for calculating the equivalent coefficient κ. Finally, through more than one hundred sets of numerical calculation results, the impact of the proportional distance λ and the ratio of charge mass to the tunnel cross-section dimension φ on the equivalence coefficients κ was investigated. An empirical formula for the equivalence coefficient κ was derived through fitting, and the accuracy of the formula was validated through literature experimental results. The research findings of this paper will provide valuable guidance for the calculation of blast wave loads in tunnel. 展开更多

The afterburning of TNT and structural constraints in confined spaces significantly amplify the blast load, leading to severe structural damage. This study investigates the mechanisms underlying the enhanced dynamic response of reinforced concrete blast doors with four-sided restraints in confined space. Explosion tests with TNT charges ranging from 0.15 kg to 0.4 kg were conducted in a confined space, capturing overpressure loads and the dynamic response of the blast door. An internal explosion model incorporating the afterburning effect was developed using LS-DYNA software and validated against experimental data. The results reveal that the TNT afterburning effect amplifies both the initial peak overpressure and the quasi-static overpressure, resulting in increased deformation of the blast door.Within the 0.15-0.4 kg charge range, the initial overpressure peak and quasi-static overpressure increased by an average of 1.79 times and 2.21 times, respectively. Additionally, the afterburning effect enhanced the blast door's deflection by 177%. Compared to open-space scenarios, the cumulative deflection of the blast door due to repeated shock wave impacts is significantly greater in confined spaces. Furthermore, the quasi-static pressure arising from the structural constraints sustains the blast door's deflection at a high level. 展开更多

To address the problems of low accuracy by the CONWEP model and poor efficiency by the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian(CEL)method in predicting close-range air blast loads of cylindrical charges,a neural network-based simulation(NNS)method with higher accuracy and better efficiency was proposed. The NNS method consisted of three main steps.First, the parameters of blast loads, including the peak pressures and impulses of cylindrical charges with different aspect ratios(L/D)at different stand-off distances and incident angles were obtained by two-dimensional numerical simulations.Subsequently, incident shape factors of cylindrical charges with arbitrary aspect ratios were predicted by a neural network. Finally, reflected shape factors were derived and implemented into the subroutine of the ABAQUS code to modify the CONWEP model, including modifications of impulse and overpressure. The reliability of the proposed NNS method was verified by related experimental results.Remarkable accuracy improvement was acquired by the proposed NNS method compared with the unmodified CONWEP model. Moreover, huge efficiency superiority was obtained by the proposed NNS method compared with the CEL method. The proposed NNS method showed good accuracy when the scaled distance was greater than 0.2 m/kg^(1/3).It should be noted that there is no need to generate a new dataset again since the blast loads satisfy the similarity law,and the proposed NNS method can be directly used to simulate the blast loads generated by different cylindrical charges. The proposed NNS method with high efficiency and accuracy can be used as an effective method to analyze the dynamic response of structures under blast loads, and it has significant application prospects in designing protective structures. 展开更多

To enhance the recuperation rate of the mine and comply with the stipulations of green mining technology, it is vital to expeditiously recuperate the coal pillar resources in the final stage, thus preventing the considerable squandering of resources. The coal pillar resource of the main roadway and its branch roadway constitutes a significant recovery subject. Its coal pillar shape is regular and possesses a considerable strike distance, facilitating the arrangement of the coal pillar recovery working face (CPRWF) for mining operations. However, for the remaining coal pillars with a thick and hard roof (THF) and multiple tectonic zones, CPRWF encounters challenges in selecting an appropriate layout, managing excessive roof pressure, and predicting mining stress. Aiming at the roadway coal pillar group with THF and multi-structural areas in specific projects, a method of constructing multi-stage CPRWF by one side gob-side entry driving (GSED) and one side roadway reusing is proposed. Through theoretical calculation of roof fracture and numerical simulation verification, combined with field engineering experience and economic analysis, the width of the narrow coal pillar (NCP) in the GSED is determined to be 10 m and the length of the CPRWF is 65 m. Concurrently, the potential safety hazard that the roof will fall asymmetrically and THF is difficult to break during CPRWF mining after GSED is analyzed and verified. Then, a control method involving the pre-cutting of the roof in the reused roadway before mining is proposed. This method has been shown to facilitate the complete collapse of THF, reduce the degree of mine pressure, and facilitate the symmetrical breaking of the roof. Accordingly, a roof-cutting scheme based on a directional drilling rig, bidirectional shaped polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, and emulsion explosive was devised, and the pre-splitting of 8.2 m THF was accomplished. Field observations indicate that directional cracks are evident in the roof, the coal wall is flat during CPRWF mining, and the overall level of mining pressure is within the control range. Therefore, the combined application of GSED and roof-cutting technology for coal pillar recovery has been successfully implemented, thereby providing new insights and engineering references for the construction and pressure relief mining of CPRWF. 展开更多

In order to improve the detonation characteristics of RDX,a RDX-based composite explosive with TiH_(2)powders was prepared. The effects of content and particle size of TiH_(2)powders on thermal safety, shock wave parameters and thermal damage effects of RDX-based composite explosive were studied with the C80 microcalorimeter, air blast experiment system and colorimetric thermometry method.Experimental results showed that TiH_(2)powders could enhance the thermal stability of RDX-based composite explosive and increase its ultimate decomposition heat. The content and particle size of TiH_(2)powders also had significant effects on the thermal safety, detonation velocity, shock wave parameters, fireball temperature and duration of RDX-based composite explosives.Furthermore, the differences of TiH_(2)and Ti powders on the detonation energy output rules of RDX-based composite explosives were also compared, showing that TiH_(2)powders had better influences on improving the explosion power and thermal damage effect of RDX-based composite explosives than Ti powders, for the participation of free H_(2)released by TiH_(2)powders in the detonation process.TiH_(2)powders have important research values as a novel energetic additive in the field of military composite explosives. 展开更多
