Evolutionary trend analysis and knowledge structure mapping of endothelial dysfunction in sepsis:a bibliometrics study

BACKGROUND:A pathophysiological feature of septic organ failure is endothelial dysfunction in sepsis(EDS).The physiological and pathological mechanism of sepsis is considered to be vascular leakage caused by endothelial dysfunction.These pathological changes lead to systemic organ injury.However,an analysis using bibliometric methods has not yet been conducted in the field of EDS.This study was conducted to provide an overview of knowledge structure and research trends in the fi eld of EDS.METHODS:Based on previous research,a literature search was performed in the Web of Science Core Collection(WoSCC)for publications associated with EDS published between the year 2003 and 2023.Various types of data from the publications,such as citation frequency,authorship,keywords and highly cited articles,were extracted.The"Create Citation Report"feature in the WoSCC was employed to calculate the Hirsch index(h-index)and average citations per item(ACI)of authors,institutions,and countries.To conduct bibliometric and visualization analyses,three bibliometric tools were used,including R-bibliometrix,CiteSpace(co-citation analysis of references),and VOSviewer(co-authorship analysis of institutions,co-authorship analysis of authors,co-occurrence analysis of keywords).RESULTS:After excluding invalid records,the study finaly included 4,536 publications with 135,386 citations.Most of these publications originated in the USA,China,Germany,Canada,and Japan.Harvard University emerged as the most prolifi c institution,while professor Jong-Sup Bae and his research team at Kyungpook National University emerged as authors with the greatest infl uence.The"protein C","tissue factor","thrombin","glycocalyx",“acute kidney injury”,“syndecan-1”and“biomarker”were identifi ed as prominent areas of research.Future research may focus on molecular mechanisms(such as as vascular endothelial[VE]-cadherin regulation)and therapeutic interventions to enhance endothelial repair and function.CONCLUSION:Our findings show a growing interest in EDS research.Key areas for future research include signaling pathways,molecular mechanisms,endothelial repair,and interactions between endothelial cells and other cell types in sepsis. 展开更多

High-Speed Rail(HSR)systems represent a significant advancement in modern transportation.They offer rapid,efficient,and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional rail,air travel and road transportation.Even if highspeed trains appeared approximately in the middle of the previous century,several aspects concerning safety remain.This study aims to comprehensively review the scientific literature related to the safety issues of high-speed railways.A bibliometric analysis was carried out utilizing 2358 publications from the last two decades(2004-2023)to understand better the existing research on HSR and safety.Future trends and thematic areas of research are identified and analyzed.Chinese researchers and universities have led the total number of current publications related to the context of HSR safety.While most of the publications come from Chinese institutions,a significant international collaboration can be identified.The main areas of research on HSR and safety can be classified into four main clusters based on the keywords co-occurrence analysis and are related to risk management,structural dynamics and resilience in railway systems,geotechnical engineering and tunnelling and maintenance technologies.Researchers and policymakers can use the results of this study to better understand the dynamics of scientific research in the field of highspeed railways and safety and make decisions about future directions and funding priorities. 展开更多

As High Speed Rail(HSR)has proliferated globally,so has a related research field dedicated to exploring and addressing its unique issues.Yet,studies to understand and classify the HSR research domain are limited.This paper addresses the gap,using bibliometric analysis to identify future research areas and 20 candidate topics for literature review based on keyword analysis through VOSviewer.Article and review papers related to HSR published in the last 20 years(2003-2022)were retrieved from Scopus,and then analyzed to determine the split in knowledge between languages,the collaboration between countries and institutions,highly productive and cited journals,and research topics which have and have not been reviewed.Approximately 30%of the search results were published exclusively in Chinese,highlighting the importance of extending the evaluation to cover both languages.This is a novel aspect of the work,which has enabled the recognition of potential knowledge gaps.It is recommended that future reviews incorporate works in both languages,possibly through international collaboration.Institutions in China and other countries that are strong collaborators have been identified,as well as relevant,highly cited journals. 展开更多

Purpose: The goal of this study is to explore whether deep learning based embed ded models can provide a better visualization solution for large citation networks. De sign/methodology/approach: Our team compared the visualization approach borrowed from the deep learning community with the well-known bibliometric network visualization for large scale data. 47,294 highly cited papers were visualized by using three network embedding models plus the t-SNE dimensionality reduction technique. Besides, three base maps were created with the same dataset for evaluation purposes. All base maps used the classic Open Ord method with different edge cutting strategies and parameters. Findings: The network embedded maps with t-SNE preserve a very similar global structure to the full edges classic force-directed map, while the maps vary in local structure. Among them, the Node2Vec model has the best overall visualization performance, the local structure has been significantly improved and the maps' layout has very high stability.Research limitations: The computational and time costs of training are very high for network em bedded models to obtain high dimensional latent vector. Only one dimensionality reduction technique was tested. Practical implications: This paper demonstrates that the network embedding models are able to accurately reconstruct the large bibliometric network in the vector space. In the future, apart from network visualization, many classical vector-based machine learning algorithms can be applied to network representations for solving bibliomet ric analysis tasks. Originality/value: This paper provides the first systematic comparison of classical science mapping visualization with network embedding based visualization on a large scale dataset. We showed deep learning based network embedding model with t-SNE can provide a richer,more stable science map. We also designed a practical evaluation method to investigate and compare maps. 展开更多

Background:Exertional heat stroke is a fatal condition and remains a health problem.This paper evaluates the publication trend regarding exertional heat stroke research between 1996 and 2015 using a bibliometric method.Methods:Articles regarding exertional heat stroke research published between 1996 and December 2015 were searched for in the SCI-EXPANDED database of Web of Science.The search results were analyzed with regard to publication year;publication quantity regarding countries/regions;authors;citation frequency;and journal distribution.Cite Space(v3.6) was used for a document co-citation visualization analysis.Results:In total,289 publications on heat stroke were located.After selection,209 original articles conducted across 28 countries/regions and published in 83 journals were included in the analysis.The USA,Isreal,and France were the most common locations for exertional heat stroke studies.The Cite Space visualization cluster analysis showed that exertional heat stroke-related mortality and protective measures were constant concerns of research.Conclusion:Research related to exertional heat stroke has been continuous concerned.USA is still the leading country in this field. 展开更多

Purpose: To give a theoretical framework to measure the relative impact of bibliometric methodology on the subfields of a scientific discipline, and how that impact depends on the method of evaluation used to credit individual scientists with citations and publications. The authors include a study of the discipline of physics to illustrate the method. Indicators are introduced to measure the proportion of a credit space awarded to a subfield or a set of authors.Design/methodology/approach: The theoretical methodology introduces the notion of credit spaces for a discipline. These quantify the total citation or publication credit accumulated by the scientists in the discipline. One can then examine how the credit is divided among the subfields. The design of the physics study uses the American Physical Society print journals to assign subdiscipline classifications to articles and gather citation, publication, and author information. Credit spaces for the collection of Physical Review Journal articles are computed as a proxy for physics.Findings: There is a substantial difference in the value or impact of a specific subfield depending on the credit system employed to credit individual authors.Research limitations: Subfield classification information is difficult to obtain. In the illustrative physics study, subfields are treated in groups designated by the Physical Review journals. While this collection of articles represents a broad part of the physics literature, it is not all the literature nor a random sample.Practical implications: The method of crediting individual scientists has consequences beyond the individual and affects the perceived impact of whole subfields and institutions. Originality/value: The article reveals the consequences of bibliometric methodology on subfields of a disciple by introducing a systematic theoretical framework for measuring the consequences. 展开更多

Purpose:This article aims to describe the global research profile and the development trends of single cell research from the perspective of bibliometric analysis and semantic mining.Design/methodology/approach:The literatures on single cell research were extracted from Clarivate Analytic’s Web of Science Core Collection between 2009 and 2019.Firstly,bibliometric analyses were performed with Thomson Data Analyzer(TDA).Secondly,topic identification and evolution trends of single cell research was conducted through the LDA topic model.Thirdly,taking the post-discretized method which is used for topic evolution analysis for reference,the topics were also be dispersed to countries to detect the spatial distribution.Findings:The publication of single cell research shows significantly increasing tendency in the last decade.The topics of single cell research field can be divided into three categories,which respectively refers to single cell research methods,mechanism of biological process,and clinical application of single cell technologies.The different trends of these categories indicate that technological innovation drives the development of applied research.The continuous and rapid growth of the topic strength in the field of cancer diagnosis and treatment indicates that this research topic has received extensive attention in recent years.The topic distributions of some countries are relatively balanced,while for the other countries,several topics show significant superiority.Research limitations:The analyzed data of this study only contain those were included in the Web of Science Core Collection.Practical implications:This study provides insights into the research progress regarding single cell field and identifies the most concerned topics which reflect potential opportunities and challenges.The national topic distribution analysis based on the post-discretized analysis method extends topic analysis from time dimension to space dimension.Originality/value:This paper combines bibliometric analysis and LDA model to analyze the evolution trends of single cell research field.The method of extending post-discretized analysis from time dimension to space dimension is distinctive and insightful. 展开更多

Historical Bibliometrics Using Google Scholar: The Case of Roman Law, 1727–2016 被引量:2

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the historical and linguistic coverage of Google Scholar, using publications in the field of Roman law as an example.Design/methodology/approach: To create a dataset of Roman law publications, we retrieved a total of 21,300 records of publications, published between years 1500 and 2016, with title including words denoting "Roman law" in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Findings: We were able to find publications dating back to 1727. The largest number of publications and authors date to the late 19th century, and this peak might be explained by the role of Roman law in French legal education at the time. Furthermore, we found exceptionally skewed concentration of publications to authors, as well as of citations to publications. We speculate that this could be explained by the long time-frame of the study, and the importance of classic works. Research limitation: Major limitations, and potential future work, relate to data quality, and cleaning, disambiguation of publications and authors, as well as comparing coverage with other data sources. Practical implications: We find Google Scholar to be a promising data source for historical bibliometrics. This approach may help bridge the gap between bibliometrics and the "digital humanities".Originality/value: Earlier studies have focused mainly on Google Scholar's coverage of publications and citations in general, or in specific fields. Purpose:This study aims to explore the trend and status of international collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence(AI)and to understand the hot topics,core groups,and major collaboration patterns in global AI research.Design/methodology/approach:We selected 38,224 papers in the field of AI from 1985 to 2019 in the core collection database of Web of Science(WoS)and studied international collaboration from the perspectives of authors,institutions,and countries through bibliometric analysis and social network analysis.Findings:The bibliometric results show that in the field of AI,the number of published papers is increasing every year,and 84.8%of them are cooperative papers.Collaboration with more than three authors,collaboration between two countries and collaboration within institutions are the three main levels of collaboration patterns.Through social network analysis,this study found that the US,the UK,France,and Spain led global collaboration research in the field of AI at the country level,while Vietnam,Saudi Arabia,and United Arab Emirates had a high degree of international participation.Collaboration at the institution level reflects obvious regional and economic characteristics.There are the Developing Countries Institution Collaboration Group led by Iran,China,and Vietnam,as well as the Developed Countries Institution Collaboration Group led by the US,Canada,the UK.Also,the Chinese Academy of Sciences(China)plays an important,pivotal role in connecting the these institutional collaboration groups.Research limitations:First,participant contributions in international collaboration may have varied,but in our research they are viewed equally when building collaboration networks.Second,although the edge weight in the collaboration network is considered,it is only used to help reduce the network and does not reflect the strength of collaboration.Practical implications:The findings fill the current shortage of research on international collaboration in AI.They will help inform scientists and policy makers about the future of AI research.Originality/value:This work is the longest to date regarding international collaboration in the field of AI.This research explores the evolution,future trends,and major collaboration patterns of international collaboration in the field of AI over the past 35 years.It also reveals the leading countries,core groups,and characteristics of collaboration in the field of AI. 展开更多

Picea Mill.species are important components of boreal and subalpine forests.They have a wide geographical range in the Northern Hemisphere,extending from the Eurasian continent to North America.In this study,publications on Picea species from 2002 to 2016 were identified via the Web of Science(WoS)and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI)databases,and subjected to relationship network visualization using CiteSpace software.This study represents the first such analysis of Picea and provides a reference for bibliometrics in forest tree species research.The results show that the total number of publications on Picea archived in WoS was20,958 and that the number of papers published annually has increased over time,peaking at 1725 in 2013.The studies were mainly conducted in North America,Europe and Asia;among them,Canada published the most papers and showed the strongest betweenness centrality(0.11).Among research institutions,the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala had the highest publication record.The research contributions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences,the Chinese Academy of Forestry,and Beijing Forestry University have improved rapidly in recent years,greatly enhancing the international impact of Chinese research in this field.The research contents were grouped into five categories:forest ecosystems,pest resistance,extraction and functional analyses of active ingredients from various plant organs,nursery and afforestation techniques,and timber quality research.In China,the number of papers from the CNKI database was4532,increasing at an even pace.The research topics on Picea included forest ecosystems,seedling and afforestation techniques,basic studies on individual species and populations,and pests and diseases.Within and outside China,hotspots in Picea research included the relationships between Picea and environmental factors,and the genomic sequences of Picea. 展开更多

The need to develop tailored tools for improving the quality of thematic bibliometric analyses: Evidence from papers published in Sustainability and Scientometrics

Purpose: The aim of this article is to explore up to seven parameters related to the methodological quality and reproducibility of thematic bibliometric research published in the two most productive journals in bibliometrics, Sustainability(a journal outside the discipline) and Scientometrics, the flagship journal in the field.Design/methodology/approach: The study identifies the need for developing tailored tools for improving the quality of thematic bibliometric analyses, and presents a framework that can guide the development of such tools. A total of 508 papers are analysed, 77% of Sustainability, and 23% published in Scientometrics, for the 2019-2021 period.Findings: An average of 2.6 shortcomings per paper was found for the whole sample, with an almost identical number of flaws in both journals. Sustainability has more flaws than Scientometrics in four of the seven parameters studied, while Scientometrics has more shortcomings in the remaining three variables.Research limitations: The first limitation of this work is that it is a study of two scientific journals, so the results cannot be directly extrapolated to the set of thematic bibliometric analyses published in journals from all fields.Practical implications: We propose the adoption of protocols, guidelines, and other similar tools, adapted to bibliometric practice, which could increase the thoroughness, transparency, and reproducibility of this type of research.Originality/value: These results show considerable room for improvement in terms of the adequate use and breakdown of methodological procedures in thematic bibliometric research, both in journals in the Information Science area and journals outside the discipline. 展开更多

Orbital angular momentum(OAM)technology,refers to Laguerre-Gaussian(LG)beams,twisted beams,vector/vortex beams,acoustic vortex beams and fractional vortex beams.It is an emerging and promising technology to improve the communication capacity,spectral efficiency,and anti-jamming capability due to its helical phase fronts and infinite orthogonal states.Although the OAM research began in the 1990s,the developing trends,current status,issues and characteristics through a systematic observation have not yet been performed.This paper presents a knowledge-based evolution of OAM research published in the Web of Science(WoS)from 2011 to 2021 using bibliometric analysis in Citepspace.The results demonstrate that the bandwidth,efficiency,gain,divergence,phase quantization,bulky and complex feeding structures,misalignment,distortion,interferences atmospheric turbulence and diffraction were the key issues found in the OAM technology.The main research hotspots and categories,influential authors,leading journals,best institutions of OAM show a strong bias in favor of their functions and technology developments.The research on OAM was mainly performed by the counties that have developed the 5G and now moving towards 6G communications like China,USA and South Korea.This study would serve as an inclusive guide on the future research trends and status especially for the OAM researchers. 展开更多

Purpose:A key question when ranking universities is whether or not to allocate the publication output of affiliated hospitals to universities.This paper presents a method for classifying the varying degrees of interdependency between academic hospitals and universities in the context of the Leiden Ranking.Design/methodology/approach:Hospital nomenclatures vary worldwide to denote some form of collaboration with a university,however they do not correspond to universally standard definitions.Thus,rather than seeking a normative definition of academic hospitals,we propose a three-step workflow that aligns the university-hospital relationship with one of three general models:full integration of the hospital and the medical faculty into a single organization;health science centres in which hospitals and medical faculty remain separate entities albeit within the same governance structure;and structures in which universities and hospitals are separate entities which collaborate with one another.This classification system provides a standard through which publications which mention affiliations with academic hospitals can be better allocated.Findings:In the paper we illustrate how the three-step workflow effectively translates the three above-mentioned models into two types of instrumental relationships for the assignation of publications:"associate"and"component".When a hospital and a medical faculty are fully integrated or when a hospital is part of a health science centre,the relationship is classified as component.When a hospital follows the model of collaboration and support,the relationship is classified as associate.The compilation of data following these standards allows for a more uniform comparison between worldwide educational and re search systems.Research limitations:The workflow is resource intensive,depends heavily on the information provided by universities and hospitals,and is more challenging for languages that use nonLatin characters.Further,the application of the workflow demands a careful evaluation of different types of input which can result in ambiguity and makes it difficult to automatize.Practical implications:Determining the type of affiliation an academic hospital has with a university can have a substantial impact on the publication counts for universities.This workflow can also aid in analysing collaborations among the two types of organizations.Originality/value:The three-step workflow is a unique way to establish the type of relationship an academic hospital has with a university accounting for national and regional differences on nomenclature. 展开更多

Purpose:This paper aims to investigate the differences between conference papers and journal papers in the field of computer science based on Bayesian network.Design/methodology/approach:This paper investigated the differences between conference papers and journal papers in the field of computer science based on Bayesian network,a knowledge-representative framework that can model relationships among all variables in the network.We defined the variables required for Bayesian networks modeling,calculated the values of each variable based Aminer dataset(a literature data set in the field of computer science),learned the Bayesian network and derived some findings based on network inference.Findings:The study found that conferences are more attractive to senior scholars,the academic impact of conference papers is slightly higher than journal papers,and it is uncertain whether conference papers are more innovative than journal papers.Research limitations:The study was limited to the field of computer science and employed Aminer dataset as the sample.Further studies involving more diverse datasets and different fields could provide a more complete picture of the matter.Practical implications:By demonstrating that Bayesian networks can effectively analyze issues in Scientometrics,the study offers valuable insights that may enhance researchers’understanding of the differences between journal and conference in computer science.Originality/value:Academic conferences play a crucial role in facilitating scholarly exchange and knowledge dissemination within the field of computer science.Several studies have been conducted to examine the distinctions between conference papers and journal papers in terms of various factors,such as authors,citations,h-index and others.Those studies were carried out from different(independent)perspectives,lacking a systematic examination of the connections and interactions between multiple perspectives.This paper supplements this deficiency based on Bayesian network modeling. 展开更多

Purpose: To comprehensively evaluate the overall performance of a group or an individual in both bibliometrics and patentometrics. Design/methodology/approach: Trace metrics were applied to the top 30 universities in the2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities(ARWU) — computer sciences, the top 30 ESI highly cited papers in the computer sciences field in 2014, as well as the top 30 assignees and the top 30 most cited patents in the National Bureau of Economic Research(NBER) computer hardware and software category.Findings: We found that, by applying trace metrics, the research or marketing impact efficiency, at both group and individual levels, was clearly observed. Furthermore, trace metrics were more sensitive to the different publication-citation distributions than the average citation and h-index were.Research limitations: Trace metrics considered publications with zero citations as negative contributions. One should clarify how he/she evaluates a zero-citation paper or patent before applying trace metrics.Practical implications: Decision makers could regularly examinine the performance of their university/company by applying trace metrics and adjust their policies accordingly.Originality/value: Trace metrics could be applied both in bibliometrics and patentometrics and provide a comprehensive view. Moreover, the high sensitivity and unique impact efficiency view provided by trace metrics can facilitate decision makers in examining and adjusting their policies. 展开更多

The Bibliometric Studies on China’s Corpus-Based Interpreting Studies

Shlesinger (1998) first proposed that corpus-based interpreting studies(CIS) should be regarded as an offshoot of corpus-based translation studies (CTS).In China, owing to the development and compilation of interpreting corpora, CIShas gained momentum since 2007. To review the past achievements in this regard,the present paper first summarizes four readily compiled interpreting corpora. Then,based on the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CKNI), it conducts thestatistics mainly on relevant published papers in Chinese Social Science and Index(CSSCI) journals. Next, it pinpoints a bibliometric analysis on the data by taking intoaccount three parameters, namely, H index, reference citation and their distribution.Then, it makes a detailed review and comments on the background of CIS and itsparadigm, theoretical interpretation of CIS and the research areas of CIS, standardsof developing interpreting corpora and solutions to difficulties in compilation ofinterpreting corpora, research orientations including topics and objects. At present,although CIS have attained preliminary findings and conclusions, it has mainly reliedon the theoretical and analytical frameworks of Systemic Functional Grammar andits utility in CIS, given the fact that it has introduced few interdisciplinary studies.As a result, CIS do not take full advantage of the paradigm of corpus linguistics norexplore into such research topics as features of interpretation, interpreters’ identitiesand interpreting styles. Finally, regarding future studies, the paper proposes that CISshould foreground the relevance of improving the mechanism of interpreting corpuscompilation in order to gain ground in new research methods and perspectives. 展开更多

Analyses of stable isotopes(C,O,H)in tree rings are increasingly important cross-disciplinary programs.The rapid development in this field documented in an increasing number of publications requires a comprehensive review.This study includes a bibliometric analysis-based review to better understand research trends in tree ring stable isotope research.Overall,1475 publications were selected from the Web of Science Core Collection for 1974-2023.The findings are that:(1)numbers of annual publications and citations increased since 1974.From 1974 to 1980,there were around two relevant publications per year.However,from 2020 to 2022,this rose sharply to 109 publications per year.Likewise,average article citations were less than four per year before 1990,but were around four per article per year after 2000;(2)the major subjects using tree ring stable isotopes include forestry,geosciences,and environmental sciences,contributing to 42.5%of the total during 1974-2023;(3)the top three most productive institutions are the Chinese Academy of Sciences(423),the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest,Snow and Landscape Research(227),and the University of Arizona(204).These achievements result from strong collaborations;(4)review papers,for example,(Dawson et al.,Annu Rev Ecol Syst 33:507-559,2002)and(McCarroll and Loader,Quat Sci Rev 23:771-801,2004),are among the most cited,with more than 1000 citations;(5)tree ring stable isotope studies mainly focus on climatology and ecology,with atmospheric CO_(2) one of the most popular topics.Since 2010,precipitation and drought have received increasing attention.Based on this analysis,the research stages,key findings,debated issues,limitations and direc-tions for future research are summarized.This study serves as an important attempt to understand the progress on the use of stable isotopes in tree rings,providing scientific guid-ance for young researchers in this field. 展开更多
