Effects of silica fume on the multi-scale material properties of composite Portland cement-based cutoff wall backfill

Soil cement bentonite(SCB)is a common material for constructing vertical cutoff walls to prevent groundwater migration at contaminated industrial sites.However,site contaminants can degrade the durability of the cutoff wall.To enhance its performance,this study developed a silica fume-SCB(SSCB).The macroscopic and microscopic properties of SSCB were assessed by unconfined compressive strength test,variable head permeability test,X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)spectroscopy.The correlation between its multi-scale properties was analyzed based on pore characteristics.The results indicate that increasing the silica fume substitution ratio improved SSCB strength,especially in the middle and late curing stages.Moreover,increasing the substitution ratio decreased SSCB permeability coefficient,with a more pronounced effect in earlier curing stages.Silica fume addition also refined SSCB pore structure and reduced its porosity.The fractal dimension was used to quantify SSCB pore structure complexity.Increasing silica fume content reduced small pore fractal dimension in SSCB.Concurrently,SSCB strength increased and SSCB permeability coefficient decreased.The findings of this research will demonstrate the great potential of SSCB backfill for practical applications. 展开更多

A bacterial strain that was capable of degrading organic sulfur (dibenzothiophene) was isolated by enrichment techniques from the petroleum-contaminated soil collected from Zhongyuan Oil Field. The strain is named ZYX and is gram-positive. This strain undergoes bacilus-coccus morphological change, and forms yellow-pigment glossy circular colonies with 1.5 mm in diameter on average after 2 d incubation on Luria-Bertani(LB) plates. The full-length of 16S rDNA sequence of strain ZYX was determined and analyzed. Strain ZYX is found most relative with the genus of Arthrobacter. The similarity values between ZYX and Arthrobacter sp. P2 is 99.53%. The main morphological, biochemical and physiological features of strain ZYX accord with those of Arthrobacter. It is found that the optimal initial pH for growth is about 7.0, and the optimal concentration of dibenzothiophene(DBT) for growth is 0. 10 gL. Additionally, the results show that the best carbon source and nitrogen source are glycerol and glutamine, respectively. 展开更多

Membrane behavior of bentonite-amended Fukakusa clay in K, Na and Ca solutions

Bentonite has been proven to be effective in enhancing the membrane property of clay, by which landfill liners can have better barrier performance with regard to the migration of contaminants. In this work, 5% sodium bentonite amended with locally available Fukakusa clay was utilized to evaluate the membrane behavior toward different kinds of ions: K, Na and Ca. The chemico-osmotic efficiency coefficient, co, was obtained in electrolyte solution with different concentrations of 0.5, 1, 5, 10, and 50 mmol/L. According to the results, solute type and ion valence have a significant effect on membrane behaviors. Additionally, co continually decreased as the Na and Ca concentrations increased, which is consistent with the Gouy-Chapman theory. The membrane behavior toward Na was similar to that toward K, according to the chemico-osmotic efficiency coefficient co. In the case of the divalent ion Ca, the membrane behavior was lower compared to monovalent ions Na and K at the same concentration. The mechanisms of the membrane performance change were discussed with the assistance of XRD patterns, free-swelling results and SEM images. 展开更多

The differential cubature solution to the problem of a Mindlin plate lying on the Winkler foundation with two simply supported edges and two clamped edges was derived.Discrete numerical technology and shape functions were used to ensure that the solution is suitable to irregular shaped plates.Then,the mechanical model and the solution were employed to model the protection layer that isolates the mining stopes from sea water in Sanshandao gold mine,which is the first subsea mine of China.Furthermore,thickness optimizations for the protection layers above each stope were conducted based on the maximum principle stress criterion,and the linear relations between the best protection layer thickness and the stope area under different safety factors were regressed to guide the isolation design.The method presented in this work provides a practical way to quickly design the isolation layer thickness in subsea mining. 展开更多

A good understanding of pedestrian movement in the transfer corridor is vital for the planning and design of the station,especially for efficiency and safety.A multi-force vector grid model was presented to simulate the movement of bidirectional pedestrian flow based on cellular automata and forces between pedestrians.The model improves rule-based characteristics of cellular automata,details forces between pedestrians and solves pedestrian collisions by a several-step updating method to simulate pedestrian movements.Two general scenarios in corridor were simulated.One is bidirectional pedestrian flow simulation with isolation facility,and the other is bidirectional pedestrian flow simulation without isolation facility,where there exists disturbance in the middle.Through simulation,some facts can be seen that pedestrians in the case with isolation facility have the largest speed and pedestrians in the case without isolation facility have the smallest speed; pedestrians in the case of unidirectional flow have the largest volume and pedestrians in the case of without isolation facility have the smallest volume. 展开更多

The software can calculate the size and locate the situations of the isolated melts. According to the liquid shrinkage of each isolated melts and the standard parameters of risers in the database, the riser’s situation and the size can be identified intelligently as long as the riser’s shape is selected. 3-D software and simulation analysis of CAST soft/computer aid engineering(CAE) software show that the design of the riser and the running system is feasible. 展开更多

Vibration isolation is an effective method to mitigate unwanted disturbances arising from dynamic loading conditions. With smart materials as suitable substitutes, the conventional passive isolators have attained attributes of semi-active as well as the active control system. In the present study, the non-homogenous field-dependent isolation capabilities of the magnetorheological elastomer are explored under torsional vibrations. Torsional natural frequency was measured using the serial arrangement of accelerometers. Novel methods are introduced to evaluate the torsional stiffness variations of the isolator for a semi-definite and a motor-coupled rotor system. For the semi-definite system, the isolation effect was studied using the frequency response functions from the modal analysis. The speed-dependent variations for motor-coupled rotor system were assessed using the shift in frequency amplitudes from torque transducers. Finite element method magnetics was used to study the variations in the non-homogenous magnetic field across the elastomer. The response functions for the semi-definite rotor system reveal a shift in the frequency in the effect of the magnetic field. Speed-dependent variations in the frequency domain indicate an increment of 9% in the resonant frequency of the system. 展开更多
