The particle image velocimetry (PIV) and the hot-wire anem...The characteristics of the flowfields of a synthetic jet actuator are experimentally investigated with the slot-nozzle driven by the piezoelectric membrane. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) and the hot-wire anemometer are utilized to measure the flowfields and the velocity profiles of the actuator with different actuating factors. Analytical results show that pairs of counter-rotating vortices are generated near the nozzle. With the development of the synthetic ject, the synthetic jet rapidly spreads in the slot-width direction; while in the slot-length direction, it contracts firstly and slowly spreads. The centerline velocity distribution has a up-down tendency varying with axial distances, and accelerates to its maximum at z/b= 10. The transverse velocity profile across the slot-width is centro-symmetric and self-similar. However, the velocity profiles across the slot-length are saddle-like near the nozzle. It shows that there are two resonance frequencies for the actuator. If the actuator works with the resonance frequency, the vorticity and the velocity of the synthetic jet are higher than those of other frequencies. Compared with the continuous jet, the synthetic jet shows special flow characteristics.展开更多
In this study consecutive consolidated isotropically drained triaxial tests for the coefficient of earth pressure at rest(K_0) were carried out to investigate its rules of evolution as well as its strength characteris...In this study consecutive consolidated isotropically drained triaxial tests for the coefficient of earth pressure at rest(K_0) were carried out to investigate its rules of evolution as well as its strength characteristics for normal,consolidated saturated silt under high pressure.The tests results indicate that:1) for normal,consolidated saturated silt,K_0 values increase as the consolidation stress increases at high pressure levels,while the nonlinear characteristics of K_0 are inconspicuous compared to cohesive soils;2) the Jaky and Roscoe equations,used to calculate K_0,are only suitable for certain soils,but cannot represent these values for normal, consolidated saturated silt due to the variation in bilinear strength at high pressure;and 3) there are close relations between the nonlinear characteristics of K_0 and the void ratio,measured in the tests.Both share the same functional form while under pressure. Based on our experimental results,we developed an empirical linear model to interpret the rules of nonlinear variation for the coefficient of earth pressure at rest.展开更多

This paper focuses on improving rock characterization algorithms for instrumented roof-boRer systems. For this purpose, an improved void detection algorithm is proposed, where the underlying theory is built upon the concept of mean change detection based on the feed pressure signals. In addition, the application of acoustic sensing for void detection is examined and it is shown that the variance of the filtered acoustic signal is correlated to the strength of the material being drilled. The proposed algorithm has been validated on the data collected from full-scale drilling tests in various concrete and rock samples at the J. H. Fletcher facility.展开更多
Fingerprint authentication system is used to verify users' identification according to the characteristics of their fingerprints.However,this system has some security and privacy problems.For example,some artifici...Fingerprint authentication system is used to verify users' identification according to the characteristics of their fingerprints.However,this system has some security and privacy problems.For example,some artificial fingerprints can trick the fingerprint authentication system and access information using real users' identification.Therefore,a fingerprint liveness detection algorithm needs to be designed to prevent illegal users from accessing privacy information.In this paper,a new software-based liveness detection approach using multi-scale local phase quantity(LPQ) and principal component analysis(PCA) is proposed.The feature vectors of a fingerprint are constructed through multi-scale LPQ.PCA technology is also introduced to reduce the dimensionality of the feature vectors and gain more effective features.Finally,a training model is gained using support vector machine classifier,and the liveness of a fingerprint is detected on the basis of the training model.Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method can detect the liveness of users' fingerprints and achieve high recognition accuracy.This study also confirms that multi-resolution analysis is a useful method for texture feature extraction during fingerprint liveness detection.展开更多
