Magnesium alloys as medical implant materials necessitate a lower and adjustable corrosion rate for clinical applications. The microstructure and corrosion behavior of AZ31Mn-xEr(x=0.1,0.5,1.2)alloys were systematically investigated using optical microscopy(OM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),combined with Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)analyses. The findings showed that the alloying element Er refined the grain structure during solidification by increasing the nucleation rate and forming a secondary phase of Al_(3)Er with Al.The Er and Mg in the matrix co-oxidize to form a dense MgO/Er_(2)O_(3)composite oxide, preventing the formation of loose magnesium hydroxide/basic magnesium carbonate. The trace alloying element Mn interacts with impurities Fe in the magnesium matrix to form an AlFeMn second phase, reducing micro-galvanic corrosion driving force.Electrochemical testing in a 3.5%NaCl solution demonstrated a marked reduction in corrosion rate from 10.46 mm/a(AZ 31 Mn alloy)to 0.44 mm/a(AZ31Mn-1.2Er alloy). This research offers a reference for searching for corrosion-resistant magnesium alloy and degradable medical magnesium alloy materials. 展开更多

To weaken the basal texture and in-plane anisotropy of magnesium alloy, non-basal slips are pre-enhanced by pre-rolling with a single pass larger strain reduction at elevated temperatures. Then Mg alloy sheets with the thickness of 1 mm are achieved after five passes rolling at 300 ℃. A double peak and disperse basal texture is generated after pre- rolling at higher temperatures when the non-basal slips are more active. So, the texture intensity of pre-rolled samples is reduced. Moreover, the distribution condition of in-grain misorientation axes (a method to analyze the activation of slips) shows that the pyramidal slip is quite active during deformation. After annealing on final rolled sheets, the texture distributions are changed and the intensity of texture reduces obviously due to static recrystallization. In particular, the r-value and in-plane anisotropy of pre-rolled samples are obviously lower than those of sample without pre-rolling. 展开更多

The process of preparing anodic oxide film containing active sites and electroless nickel plating on highly active rare earth magnesium alloy was developed. The formation mechanism of electroless nickel plating on active anodic oxide film and the structure and properties of the composite coating were studied by several surface and electrochemical techniques. The results showed that Ag nanograins with an average size of 10 nm were embedded into the anodic oxide film with pores of 0.1−2μm.Ag nanoparticles provided a catalytic site for the deposition of Ni-B alloy, and the Ni crystal nucleus was first grown in horizontal mode and then in cylindrical mode. The corrosion potential of the composite coating increased by 1.37 V and the corrosion current reduced two orders of magnitude due to the subsequent deposition of Ni-P alloy. The high corrosion resistance was attributed to the misaligning of these micro defects in the three different layers and the amorphous structure of the Ni-P alloy in the outer layer. These findings provide a new idea for electroless nickel plating on anodic oxide film. 展开更多

Fatigue and tensile behaviors of homogenized WE 54 magnesium alloy before and after immersion in simulated body fluid(SBF)were investigated.According to the tensile test, the alloy without immersion in SBF solution has the highest tensile strength of 278 MPa,which decreased to 190 MPa after 336 h of immersion..The fatigue life of the homogenized WE 54 magnesium alloy before immersion in the SBF solution under a constant stress of 15 MPa is 3598 cycles. However, the fatigue life of the alloy decreased to 453 cycles after 336 h of immersion in the SBF solution under the same stress.Examination of the fracture surface of the samples by SEM reveals that the origin of the fatigue crack before immersion is micro-pores and defects. While corrosion pits and cracks are the main reasons for forming the initial fatigue crack after immersion. Moreover, the results obtained from practical work were evaluated and compared to theoretical calculations. The area of the hysteresis loops of the samples after the fatigue test, determined using Triangles and Monte Carlo methods, decreased from 4954.5 MPa and 4842.9 MPa before immersion to 192.0 MPa and 175.8 MPa after 336 h of immersion, respectively. 展开更多

The commercial ZK 60 magnesium alloy with extruded state experienced aging heat treatment(T 6)was dynamically loaded at strain rate of 3000 s−1 by means of the split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)in this paper.Transmission electron microscopy(TEM)observations showed that the precipitatedβ′_(1) phases partially dissolved(spheroidized)with blurred interfaces within 160μs at 3000 s^(−1).The average length and diameter of the rod-shapedβ′_(1) phase particles were 48.5 and 9.8 nm after the T 6 heat treatment;while the average diameter of the sphericalβ′_(1) phases changed to 8.8 nm after loading. The deformedβ′_(1) phase generated larger lattice distortion energy than Mg matrix under high strain rate loading. Therefore, the difference of free energy(the driving force of dissolution)between theβ′_(1) phase and the matrix increased, making the instantaneous dissolution of theβ′_(1) phase thermodynamically feasible. The dissolution(spheroidization)of theβ′_(1) phase particles was kinetically promoted because the diffusion rate of the solute Zn atoms was accelerated by combined actions of adiabatic temperature rise, high density of dislocations(vacancies)and high deviatoric stresses during high strain rate loading. The increase in hardness of ZK 60-T 6 alloy could be attributed to solid solution strengthening, dislocation strengthening and second phase particle strengthening. 展开更多

Ultrasonic vibration can reduce the forming force, decrease the friction in the metal forming process and improve the surface quality of the workpiece effectively. Tensile tests of AZ31 magnesium alloy were carried out. The stress–strain relationship, fracture modes of tensile specimens, microstructure and microhardness under different vibration conditions were analyzed, in order to study the effects of the ultrasonic vibration on microstructure and performance of AZ31 magnesium alloy under tensile deformation. The results showed that the different reductions of the true stress appeared under various ultrasonic vibration conditions, and the maximum decreasing range was 4.76%. The maximum microhardness difference among the 3 nodes selected along the specimen was HV 10.9. The fracture modes, plasticity and microstructure of AZ31 magnesium alloy also were affected by amplitude and action time of the ultrasonic vibration. The softening effect and the hardening effect occurred simultaneously when the ultrasonic vibration was applied. When the ultrasonic amplitude was 4.6 μm with short action time, the plastic deformation was dominated by twins and the softening effect was dominant. However, the twinning could be inhibited and the hardening effect became dominant in the case of high ultrasonic energy. 展开更多

The film was electrodeposited on the surface of the Mg-RE alloy in cerium nitrate solution. The compositions and morphologies were analyzed by X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning election microscopy (SEM). The corrosion behaviors of the film were investigated electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization tests and immersion tests. The results show that the optimum parameters for electrochemical deposition are as follows: pH 10.0, time 30 min, 50 mmol/L Na2CO3 and temperature 25 ℃ by the designed experiments according to the orthogonal table L(9, 34). The corrosion protection efficiency is dependent on the deposition parameters. The cerium conversion film shows better corrosion protection behavior than chromate conversion film on Mg-Gd-Y-Zr magnesium alloy. 展开更多

Effect of electromagnetic stirring on microstructure of AZ91-0.8%Ce magnesium alloy was investigated. The results show that electromagnetic stirring causes a change of morphology of α-Mg phase from coarse dendrites to fine rosette-like or spherical shape. Grain size is significantly refined within the range of input voltage 75?125 V, moreover, the optimum input voltage corresponded to the minimum value (64 μm) of grain size is 125 V. Compared to the non-stirred condition, the amount of β-Mg17Al12 precipitate under the stirred condition obviously increases. The grain refinement of AZ91-0.8%Ce alloy is mainly attributed to multiplication of existing grains in the melt caused by forced fluid flow under electromagnetic stirring condition. Addition of 0.8% Ce results in the formation of ‘necking’ at secondary dendrite arm roots of α-Mg crystals, and consequently, it is helpful to increase the number of heterogeneous nucleation. 展开更多

The hot rolling experiment of AZ31 magnesium alloy was carried out by laying anoverlay mold at the initial temperature of 400℃.According to the Mizushima automatic plan view pattern control system(MAS)rolling theory and the cross rolling process, different reductions in the middle and edges of the magnesium alloy were realized, and the influence of the regional controlled reduction rolling on the edge cracks and microstructure gradient of the magnesium alloy were analyzed. It is shown that this rolling approach has reduced the maximum edge crack depth of the rolled piece by 56.85%,and there is a weakening tendency in the base surface texture of the strip edge, the base surface texture density drops from 23.97 to 17.48 after ordinary flat rolling. It exhibits basal texture gradients from the edge to the middle of the sheet along the RD direction, which reflected the uneven deformation of the sheets. It is suitable for the processing of metal molds that require large edge reductions such as mobile phone shells, and provided a theoretical basis for the variable thickness rolling of the magnesium alloy strip. 展开更多

In this paper the effect of pouring temperature of magnesium melt, preheating temperature of the barrel of screw mixer and shear rate on the solidified microstructures of semi-solid slurry was investigated by mechanical stirring method. The appropriate processing parameters of slurry preparation were obtained. The mold filling for thin walled casting was examined. Results indicated that the solid volume fraction of non-dendritic structure increased with decrease in pouring temperature of magnesium melt and the barrel preheating temperature of screw mixer. Also the grain size of primary α phase was reduced. Furthermore, the solid volume fraction of semi-solid non-dendritic structure decreased with the increase in shear rate. In the same time, grain size of primary α phase slightly changed. The fine-round granular solidified structure with 30~50 μm of prepared AZ91D magnesium semi-solid slurry was presented. Finally, it is successful to fabricate 1.0 mm extremely thin walled casting with clear contour and good soundness. 展开更多

The ignition-proof mechanism of ZM5 magnesium alloy added with 0.1% (mass fraction) rare earth (RE) was investigated. The oxide scales and substrates were characterized by scanning electronic microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and tensile test. And an oxidation model of ZM5 alloy with RE was established. The results show that the ignition temperature of ZM5 alloy is particularly elevated from 654 to 823 ℃, the microstructure is refined, and the tensile strength is slightly improved from 168.2 to 174.6 MPa by adding 0.1% RE. A double-layer oxidation film formed on the alloy surface under high temperature mainly consists of MgO, RE203 and A1203, which is 2.5-3.5 μm in thickness. It is found that the forming of protective oxidation film on the thermodynamics is attributed to RE elements congregating on the surface of molten Mg alloy. 展开更多

In this work, laser heat conduction lap welding(LHCLW) of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet and DP780galvanized steel sheet was carried out by the defocused laser beam. The effects of laser power on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joint were studied. The pros and cons of the joint were identified and evaluated by measuring the tensile shear strength, microhardness and microstructure observation. The formation mechanism of various phases at the Mg/steel interface was analyzed. The results indicated that the galvanized layer could promote the metallurgical bonding between magnesium alloy and steel by improving the diffusion ability of molten magnesium alloy at the steel interface and reacting with Mg, so as to enhance the strength of the joint. A continuous dense layered eutectic structure(α-Mg+MgZn) was formed at the interface of the joint, while MgZn_(2)and MgZn phase was formed at the weld edge zone and heat affective zone(HAZ), whereas no reaction layer was generated between the uncoated steel and magnesium alloy. A sound joint could be obtained at 2.5 kW, and the corresponding tensile shear strength reached the maximum value of 42.9 N/mm. The strength was slightly reduced at 2.6 kW due to the existence of microcracks in the eutectic reaction layer. 展开更多

Micro arc oxidation(MAO) and electrophoretic deposition(EPD) process are employed to fabricate a dense coating on magnesium alloy to protect it from corrosion in engineering application. The EPD film changes the damping characteristic of magnesium alloy, and both the MAO and EPD process change the bending stiffness of samples being treated. Damping loss factor(DLF) test and sound transmission experiments were carried out for AZ31 B magnesium alloy with coating fabricated by MAO and EPD processes. The results indicate that DLF is improved in frequency range from 0-850 Hz. Bending stiffness of the samples is improved with MAO and EPD treatment. As a result, the sound transmission loss(LST) is improved in the stiffness control stage of the sound transmission verse frequency curve. To the samples by electrophoresis process, the LST is improved in frequency range from 2500-3200 Hz, because the damping loss factor is improved with EPD process. The results are useful for the surface treatment to enhance the damping loss factor, LST and widespread application of magnesium alloy while improving the corrosion resistance. 展开更多

The effects of heat input on the microstructures and mechanical properties of tungsten inert gas (TIG) butt-welded AZ31/MB3 dissimilar Mg alloys joint were investigated by microstructural observations, microhardness testing and tensile testing. The results reveal that with the increase of heat input, the width of welding seam increases obviously and the grains both in the fusion zone and the heat affected zone coarsen during TIG welding process. The tensile strength of butt-welded joint increases with the increase of heat input and the maximum joining strength of 242 MPa is obtained with wedding current of 90 A. However, lots of welding pores occur with the further increase of heat input, which results in the decrease of joining strength. Compact anodic films with high hardness and good corrosion resistance on magnesium alloys were prepared by a new constant voltage and arc-free anodizing process. The effects of anodizing parameters such as applied voltage and electrolyte temperature on the peak current density and the thickness of films were investigated. In addition, the morphologies and corrosion resistance of films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and potentiodynamic polarization, respectively. The results show that the higher the applied voltage, the higher the peak current density and the thicker the films. However, too high applied voltage may result in breakdown of films and intense sparking which may deteriorate the properties of the anodic films and bring about unsafety. The plastic deformation simulation of AZ31 magnesium alloy at different elevated temperatures (from 473 to 723 K) was performed on Gleeble-1500 thermal mechanical simulator at the strain rates of 0.01, 0.1, 1, 5 and 10 s-t and the maximum deformation degree of 80%. The relationship between the flow stress and deformation temperature as well as strain rate was analyzed. The materials parameters and the apparent activation energy were calculated. The constitutive relationship was established with a Zener-Hollomon (Z) parameter. The results show that the flow stress increases with the increase of strain rate at a constant temperature, but it decreases with the increase of deformation temperature at a constant strain rate. The apparent activation energy is estimated to be 129-153 kJ/mol, which is close to that for self-diffusion of magnesium. The established constitutive relationship can reflect the change of flow stress during hot deformation. 展开更多
