In this paper, an improved indirect method for wheel-rail force measurement is proposed to evaluate the running safety of railway vehicles. In this method, the equilibrium equations of a suspended wheelset are derived and the wheel-rail forces are then be obtained from measured suspension and inertia forces. This indirect method avoids structural modifications to the wheelset and is applicable to the long-term operation of railway vehicles. As the wheel-rail lateral forces at two sides of the wheelset are difficult to separate, a new derailment criterion by combined use of wheelset derailment coefficient and wheel unloading ratio is proposed. To illustrate its effectiveness, the indirect method is applied to safety evaluation of rail- way vehicles in different scenarios, such as the cross wind safety of a high-speed train and the safety of a metro vehicle with hunting motions. Then, the feasibility of using this method to identify wheel-rail forces for low-floor light rail vehicles with resilient wheels is discussed. The values identified by this method is compared with that by Simpack simulation for the same low-floor vehicle, which shows a good coincidence between them in the time domain of the wheelset lateral force and the wheel-rail vertical force. In addition, use of the method to determine the high-frequency wheel-rail interaction forces reveals that it is possible to identify the high-frequency wheel-rail forces through the accelerations on the axle box.展开更多
In a gas circuit breaker,metal vapor resulting from electrode erosion is injected into the arc plasma.The arc then burns in a mixture of SF;and electrode vapor,which has properties significantly different from those o...In a gas circuit breaker,metal vapor resulting from electrode erosion is injected into the arc plasma.The arc then burns in a mixture of SF;and electrode vapor,which has properties significantly different from those of pure SF;.Thermodynamic properties and transport coefficients of thermal plasmas formed in SF;-copper vapor mixtures change as a function of temperature and pressure.The property that is mostly affected by the presence of copper is electrical conductivity,which is important in magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) analysis.In this study,the transport coefficients of SF;in the presence of 10 percent copper are considered as the basis of MHD simulation.Comparisons are made between the results during arc formation for pure SF;and SF;-Cu mixture in a medium voltage(MV) circuit breaker.According to the transport coefficients influenced by the SF;-Cu mixture,the distribution of the electric potential, temperature,electromagnetic force density and current density of the arc column are presented and discussed.Also,the arc stability and pinch effect near current zero with 3-D simulation are investigated,which is advantageous to improving the efficiency of arc plasma simulation.展开更多

The stability of QCB under wave force action can be enhanced, and the rubble mound engineering can be less than that of semi-circular breakwaters in deepwater. In order to study the wave force distribution acting on the QCB, to find wave force formula for this type of breakwater, firstly in this paper, the distribution characteristics of the horizontal force, the downward vertical force and the uplift force on the breakwater were gotten based on physical model wave flume experiments and on the analysis of the wave pressure experimental data. Based on a series of physical model tests acted by irregular waves, a kind of calculation method, which was modified by Goda formula, was proposed to carry out the wave force on the QCB. Secondly, the reliability method with correlated variables was adopted to analyze the QCB, considering the high correlation between wave forces or moments. Utilizing the observed wave data in engineering field, the reliability index and failure probability of QCB were obtained. Finally, a factor Q=0.9 is given to modify the zero pressure height above SWL of QCB, and wave force partial coefficient 1.34 to the design expressions of QCB for anti-sliding, as well as 1.67 for anti-overturning, were presented.展开更多

The resonator consists of a long vertical glass fiber with one end glued onto a rectangular cantilever beam and the other end immersed through a liquid-air interface. By measuring the resonant spectrum of the modified AFM cantilever, one is able to accurately determine the longitudinal friction coefficient ξv along the fiber axis associated with the vertical oscillation of the hanging fiber and the traversal friction coefficient ξh perpendicular to the fiber axis associated with the horizontal swing of the fiber around its joint with the cantilever. The technique is tested by measurement of the friction coefficient of a fluctuating (and slipping) contact line between the glass fiber and the liquid interface. The experiment verifies the theory and demonstrates its applications. The dual-mode mechanical resonator provides a powerful tool for the study of the contact line dynamics and the rheological property of anisotropic fluids.展开更多
The migration process of the pig in oil and gas pipeline is a complex dynamic problem.During the pigging operation,the variation of friction force caused by the nonlinear contact between the sealing disc and the pipe ...The migration process of the pig in oil and gas pipeline is a complex dynamic problem.During the pigging operation,the variation of friction force caused by the nonlinear contact between the sealing disc and the pipe wall is the key factor affecting the dynamic characteristics of the pig motion.At present,the existed pigging models for predicting pigging behavior regard friction as an invariant constant.Experimental research indicates that the friction force of the pig varies with the contact force and the lubrication conditions.Therefore,the assumption that the friction force is constant cannot reflect the friction dynamic characteristics of the pig during pigging,and will also affect the accuracy of the pigging model.Exploring the variation of friction force of pig under different conditions is the basis of establishing the transient dynamic model of a pig.As a result,in this paper,a method of direct measurement of contact force between the pig and the pipeline is presented,the contact force,the friction force,as well as the friction coefficient of the pig are obtained from the experiment.Research results in this paper can help to establish a more accurate dynamic model of pig.展开更多
