Investigating the influence of radiation on glass fibre composites is essential for their use in space and aerospace environment.Gaining insight into the damage mechanisms caused by gamma irradiation, can improve the safety and resilience of structures. This paper is aimed at investigating the failure mode and damage of gamma-irradiated repurposed pultruded glass fibre-reinforced polyester subjected to lowvelocity impact using three types of non-destructive techniques.Three sets of differently layered configurations(CRC,WCRW,W2CR2C)consisting of chopped(c),roving(r),and weaved(w)fibre-reinforced polyester are applied in this study.Drop hammer test is applied to evaluate the low-impact resistance properties of Gamma-irradiated composite at 100 kGy,500 kGy,and 1000 kGy.Preliminary flexural and hardness tests are conducted to further assess the behaviour of irradiated polymer composites.Further, the damage modes associated with the low-impact test are characterised using infrared thermography, flat panel digital radiography, and microscope observation. The results show that the composites irradiated with various doses display good impact resistance at 20 J,presenting minor damages in the form of dents on the surface. The irradiated CRC and WCRW display best impact resistance at 500 kGy,while W2CR2C at 1000 kGy.This shows that the layering sequence of reinforcement fibre can influence the impact resistance of irradiated composites.Apart from that, the application of non-destructive techniques show different damage mechanisms in the form resin cracks, yarn splitting/fracture,and matrix splitting when the composites are exposed at high and low irradiation doses. These findings offer valuable data for the defence industry, particularly in the areas of repair, maintenance, and the development of new materials. 展开更多

Accurate assessment of coal brittleness is crucial in the design of coal seam drilling and underground coal mining operations. This study proposes a method for evaluating the brittleness of gas-bearing coal based on a statistical damage constitutive model and energy evolution mechanisms.Initially, integrating the principle of effective stress and the Hoek-Brown criterion,a statistical damage constitutive model for gas-bearing coal is established and validated through triaxial compression tests under different gas pressures to verify its accuracy and applicability.Subsequently, employing energy evolution mechanism, two energy characteristic parameters(elastic energy proportion and dissipated energy proportion)are analyzed.Based on the damage stress thresholds, the damage evolution characteristics of gas bearing coal were explored. Finally,by integrating energy characteristic parameters with damage parameters,a novel brittleness index is proposed. The results demonstrate that the theoretical curves derived from the statistical damage constitutive model closely align with the test curves, accurately reflecting the stress−strain characteristics of gas-bearing coal and revealing the stress drop and softening characteristics of coal in the post-peak stage. The shape parameter and scale parameter represent the brittleness and macroscopic strength of the coal, respectively. As gas pressure increases from 1 to 5 MPa,the shape parameter and the scale parameter decrease by 22.18%and 60.45%,respectively,indicating a reduction in both brittleness and strength of the coal.Parameters such as maximum damage rate and peak elastic energy storage limit positively correlate with coal brittleness. The brittleness index effectively captures the brittleness characteristics and reveals a decrease in brittleness and an increase in sensitivity to plastic deformation under higher gas pressure conditions. 展开更多

To address the issue of extreme thermal-induced arching in CRTS II slab tracks due to joint damage,an optimized joint repair model was proposed.First, the formula for calculating the safe temperature rise of the track was derived based on the principle of stationary potential energy.Considering interlayer evolution and structural crack propagation,an optimized joint repair model for the track was established and validated.Subsequently, the impact of joint repair on track damage and arch stability under extreme temperatures was studied, and a comprehensive evaluation of the feasibility of joint repair and the evolution of damage after repair was conducted. The results show that after the joint repair, the temperature rise of the initial damage of the track structure can be increased by 11℃.Under the most unfavorable heating load with a superimposed temperature gradient, the maximum stiffness degradation index SDEG in the track structure is reduced by about 81.16%following joint repair. The joint repair process could effectively reduce the deformation of the slab arching under high temperatures, resulting in a reduction of 93.96%in upward arching deformation. After repair, with the damage to interfacing shear strength, the track arch increases by 2.616 mm. 展开更多

Aiming at the problem of deep surrounding rock instability induced by roadway excavation or mining disturbance, the true triaxial loading system was used to conduct graded cyclic maximum principal stress σ_(1) and intermediate principal stress σ_(2) tests on sandstone to simulate the effect of mining stress in actual underground engineering. The influences of each principal stress cycle on the mechanical properties, acoustic emission(AE)characteristics, and fracture characteristics of sandstone were analyzed. The damage characteristics of sandstone under true triaxial cyclic loading were studied.Furthermore, the damage constitutive model of rock mass under true triaxial cyclic loading was established based on AE cumulative ringing count. The quantitative investigation was conducted on cumulative-damage changes in circulating sandstone, which elucidated the mechanism of damage deterioration in sandstone subjected to true triaxial cyclic loading. The results show that the influence of the graded cycleσ_(1) on limit maximum principal strain ɛ_(1max) and limit minimum principal strainɛ_(3max) was significantly greater than that of the limit intermediate principal strain ɛ_(2max).Graded cycleσ_(2) had a greater impact onɛ_(2max) and a smaller impact onɛ_(3max).The elasticity modulus of sandstone decreased exponentially with the increased cyclic load amplitude, while the Poisson ratio increased linearly.b of AE showed a trend of increasing, decreasing, slightly fluctuating, and finally decreasing during cyclingσ_(1).b showed a trend of slight fluctuation, large fluctuation, and finally increase during cyclingσ_(2).Sandstone specimens experienced mainly tensile failure,tensile-shear composite failure, and mainly shear failure with increased initialσ_(2) orσ_(3).This was determined by analyzing the rise angle-average frequency of the AE parameter, corresponding to the rock specimens from splitting failure to shear failure.Besides, the mechanical damage behavior of sandstone under true triaxial cyclic loading could be well described by the established constitutive model. At the same time,it was found that the sandstone damage variable decreased with increasedσ_(2) during cyclingσ_(1).The damage variable decreased first and then increased with increasedσ_(3) during cyclingσ_(2). 展开更多

Compared with PELE with inert fillings such as polyethylene and nylon, reactive PELE(RPELE)shows excellent damage effects when impacting concrete targets due to the filling deflagration reaction. In present work,an analytical model describing the jacket deformation and concrete target damage impacted by RPELE was presented,in which the radial rarefaction and filling deflagration reaction were considered. The impact tests of RPELE on concrete target in the 592-1012 m/s were carried out to verify the analytical model.Based on the analytical model, the angle-length evolution mechanism of the jacket bending-curling deformation was revealed, and the concrete target damage was further analyzed. One can find out that the average prediction errors of the front crater, opening and back crater are 6.8%,8.5%and 7.1%,respectively.Moreover,the effects of radial rarefaction and deflagration were discussed. It was found that the neglect of radial rarefaction overestimates the jacket deformation and concrete target damage, while the deflagration reaction of filling increases the diameter of the front crater, opening and back crater by 25.4%,24.3%and 31.1%,respectively.The research provides a valuable reference for understanding and predicting the jacket deformation and concrete target damage impacted by RPELE. 展开更多

Four key stress thresholds exist in the compression process of rocks,i.e.,crack closure stress(σ_(cc)),crack initiation stress(σ_(ci)),crack damage stress(σ_(cd))and compressive strength(σ_(c)).The quantitative identifications of the first three stress thresholds are of great significance for characterizing the microcrack growth and damage evolution of rocks under compression. In this paper,a new method based on damage constitutive model is proposed to quantitatively measure the stress thresholds of rocks.Firstly, two different damage constitutive models were constructed based on acoustic emission(AE)counts and Weibull distribution function considering the compaction stages of the rock and the bearing capacity of the damage element. Then, the accumulative AE counts method(ACLM),AE count rate method(CRM)and constitutive model method(CMM)were introduced to determine the stress thresholds of rocks. Finally, the stress thresholds of 9 different rocks were identified by ACLM,CRM,and CMM.The results show that the theoretical stress−strain curves obtained from the two damage constitutive models are in good agreement with that of the experimental data, and the differences between the two damage constitutive models mainly come from the evolutionary differences of the damage variables. The results of the stress thresholds identified by the CMM are in good agreement with those identified by the AE methods,i.e.,ACLM and CRM.Therefore, the proposed CMM can be used to determine the stress thresholds of rocks. 展开更多

Introducing Neutral Polymeric bonding agents(NPBA) into the Nitrate Ester Plasticized Polyether(NEPE)propellant could improve the adhesion between filler/matrix interface, thereby contributing to the development of new generations of the NEPE propellant with better mechanical properties. Therefore, understanding the effects of NPBA on the deformation and damage evolution of the NEPE propellant is fundamental to material design and applications. This paper studies the uniaxial tensile and stress relaxation responses of the NEPE propellant with different amounts of NPBA. The damage evolution in terms of interface debonding is further investigated using a cohesive-zone model(CZM). Experimental results show that the initial modulus and strength of the NEPE propellant increase with the increasing amount of NPBA while the elongation decreases. Meanwhile, the relaxation rate slows down and a higher long-term equilibrium modulus is reached. Experimental and numerical analyses indicate that interface debonding and crack propagation along filler-matrix interface are the dominant damage mechanism for the samples with a low amount of NPBA, while damage localization and crack advancement through the matrix are predominant for the ones with a high amount of NPBA. Finally, crosslinking density tests and simulation results also show that the effect of the bonding agent is interfacial rather than due to the overall crosslinking density change of the binder. 展开更多

In order to investigate the mechanical response behavior of the gas obturator of the breech mechanism, made of polychloroprene rubber(PCR), uniaxial compression experiments were carried out by using a universal testing machine and a split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB), obtaining stress-strain responses at different temperatures and strain rates. The results revealed that, in comparison to other polymers, the gas obturator material exhibited inconspicuous strain softening and hardening effects;meanwhile, the mechanical response was more affected by the strain rate than by temperature. Subsequently, a succinct viscoelastic damage constitutive model was developed based on the ZWT model, including ten undetermined parameters, formulated with incorporating three parallel components to capture the viscoelastic response at high strain rate and further enhanced by integrating a three-parameter Weibull function to describe the damage. Compared to the ZWT model, the modified model could effectively describe the mechanical response behavior of the gas obturator material at high strain rates. This research laid a theoretical foundation for further investigation into the influence of chamber sealing issues on artillery firing. 展开更多

Laser technology holds significant promise for enhancing rock-breaking efficiency.Experimental investigations were carried out on sandstone subjected to laser radiation, aiming to elucidate its response mechanism to such radiation. The uniaxial compressive strength of sandstone notably decreases by 22.1%–54.7%following exposure to a 750 W laser for 30 s,indicating a substantial weakening effect.Furthermore, the elastic modulus and Poisson ratio of sandstone exhibit an average decrease of 33.7%and 25.9%,respectively.Simultaneously,laser radiation reduces the brittleness of sandstone, increases the dissipated energy proportion, and shifts the failure mode from tensile to tension-shear composite failure.Following laser radiation, both the number and energy of acoustic emission events in the sandstone register a substantial increase, with a more dispersed distribution of these events. In summary, laser radiation induces notable damage to the mechanical properties of sandstone, leading to a substantial decrease in elastic energy storage capacity.Laser rock breaking technology is expected to be applied in hard rock breaking engineering to significantly reduce the difficulty of rock breaking and improve rock breaking efficiency. 展开更多

Rock pillar is the key supporting component in underground engineering.During an earthquake, the key rock pillar must bear both the seismic load and the load transferred from other damaged pillars. This paper attempts to reveal the influence of the mainshock on damage evolution and failure characteristic of the key rock pillar during aftershocks by cyclic loading test of marble.Four levels of pre-damage stress(i.e.,10,30,50 and 70 MPa)in the first cycle were used to simulate the mainshock damage, and then cyclic stress with the same amplitude(namely 10 MPa)was conducted in the subsequent cycles to simulate the aftershock until rock failure. The results indicate that the presence of pre-damage has an obvious weakening effect on the bearing capacity and deformation resistance of rock materials during the aftershock process.Besides, the increase of pre-damage significantly changes the final failure pattern of the key rock pillar, and leads to an increase in the proportion of small-scale rock fragments. This study may contribute to understanding the seismic capacity of the unreinforced rock pillar during mainshock-aftershock seismic sequences and to optimizing the design of the key rock pillar in underground engineering. 展开更多

This paper developed a statistical damage constitutive model for deep rock by considering the effects of external load and thermal treatment temperature based on the distortion energy. The model parameters were determined through the extremum features of stress−strain curve.Subsequently, the model predictions were compared with experimental results of marble samples. It is found that when the treatment temperature rises, the coupling damage evolution curve shows an S-shape and the slope of ascending branch gradually decreases during the coupling damage evolution process. At a constant temperature, confining pressure can suppress the expansion of micro-fractures.As the confining pressure increases the rock exhibits ductility characteristics, and the shape of coupling damage curve changes from an S-shape into a quasi-parabolic shape. This model can well characterize the influence of high temperature on the mechanical properties of deep rock and its brittleness-ductility transition characteristics under confining pressure. Also,it is suitable for sandstone and granite, especially in predicting the pre-peak stage and peak stress of stress−strain curve under the coupling action of confining pressure and high temperature. The relevant results can provide a reference for further research on the constitutive relationship of rock-like materials and their engineering applications. 展开更多

Aluminum alloy is used as the support of final optical assembly because of its excellent mechanical properties, which constitutes th e“skeleton”of high-power laser system.Stray light reflected by weak optical elements in high power laser system will fall on the inner wall frame of aluminum alloy, which will cause damage and produce impurity particles, polluting the entire optical system. However, the research on the damage mechanism and protection technology of aluminum alloy under the action of high-power laser system is still in the initial stage. This paper introduces the interaction mechanism between laser and materials, analyzes the laser damage mechanism of aluminum alloy from the perspective of plasma nano metal particle ablation, reviews the progress of laser-induced damage protection of aluminum alloy, and prospects the future research direction of laser absorption and damage protection technology of aluminum alloy under the action of high-energy laser. 展开更多

With the gradual depletion of mineral resources in the shallow part of the earth, resource exploitation continues to move deeper into the earth,it becomes a hot topic to simulate the whole process of rock strain softening, deformation and failure in deep environment, especially under high temperature and high pressure. On the basis of Lemaitre’s strain-equivalent principle, combined with statistics and damage theory,a statistical constitutive model of rock thermal damage under triaxial compression condition is established. At the same time, taking into account the existing damage model is difficult to reflect residual strength after rock failure, the residual strength is considered in this paper by introducing correction factor of damage variable, the model rationality is also verified by experiments.Analysis of results indicates that the damage evolution curve reflects the whole process of rock micro-cracks enclosure, initiation, expansion, penetration, and the formation of macro-cracks under coupled effect of temperature and confining pressure.Rock thermal damage shows logistic growth function with the increase of temperature.Under the same strain condition, rock total damage decreases with the rise of confining pressure.By studying the electron microscope images(SEM)of rock fracture,it is inferred that 35.40 MPa is the critical confining pressure of brittle to plastic transition for this granite. The model parameter F reflects the average strength of rock, and M reflects the morphological characteristics of rock stress–strain curves. The physical meanings of model parameters are clear and the model is suitable for complex stress states, which provides valuable references for the study of rock deformation and stability in deep engineering. 展开更多

By utilizing wave velocity imaging technology, the uniaxial multi-stage loading test was conducted on siltstone to attain wave velocity imagings during rock fracture.Based on the time series parameters of acoustic emissions(AE),joint response characteristics of the velocity field and AE during rock fracture were analyzed. Moreover, the localization effect of damage during rock fracture was explored by applying wave velocity imagings. The experimental result showed that the wave velocity imagings enable three-dimensional(3-D)visualization of the extent and spatial position of damage to the rock.A damaged zone has a low wave velocity and a zone where the low wave velocity is concentrated tends to correspond to a severely damaged zone.AE parameters and wave velocity imagings depict the changes in activity of cracks during rock fracture from temporal and spatial perspectives, respectively:the activity of cracks is strengthened, and the rate of AE events increases during rock fracture;correspondingly, the low-velocity zones are gradually aggregated and their area gradually increases. From the wave velocity imagings, the damaged zones in rock were divided into an initially damaged zone,a progressively damaged zone, and a fractured zone.During rock fracture, the progressively damaged zone and the fractured zone both develop around the initially damaged zone, showing a typical localization effect of the damage.By capturing the spatial development trends of the progressively damaged zone and fractured zone in wave velocity imagings, the development of microfractures can be predicted, exerting practical significance for determining the position of the main fracture. 展开更多

To further explore the damage characteristics and impact response of the shaped charge to the solid rocket engine(SRE) in storage or transportation, protective armor was designed and the shelled charges model(SCM)/SRE with protective armor impacting by shaped charge tests were conducted. Air overpressures at 5 locations and axial acceleration caused by the explosion were measured, and the experimental results were compared with two air overpressure curves of propellant detonation obtained by related scholars. Afterwards, the finite element software AUTODYN was used to simulate the SCM impacted process and SRE detonation results. The penetration process and the formation cause of damage were analyzed. The detonation performance of TNT, reference propellant, and the propellant used in this experiment was compared. The axial acceleration caused by the explosion was also analyzed.By comprehensive comparison, the energy released by the detonation of this propellant is larger, and the HMX or Al particles contained in this propellant are more than the reference propellant, with a TNT equivalent of 1.168-1.196. Finally, advanced protection armor suggestions were proposed based on the theory of woven fabric rubber composite armor(WFRCA). 展开更多

The present study deals with the experimental, finite element(FE)and analytical assessment of low ballistic impact response of proposed flexible‘green’composite make use of naturally available jute and rubber as the constituents of the composite with stacking sequences namely jute/rubber/jute(JRJ),jute/rubber/rubber/jute(JRRJ)and jute/rubber/jute/rubber/jute(JRJRJ).Ballistic impact tests were carried out by firing a conical projectile using a gas gun apparatus at lower range of ballistic impact regime. The ballistic impact response of the proposed flexible composites are assesses based on energy absorption and damage mechanism. Results revealed that inclusion of natural rubber aids in better energy absorption and mitigating the failure of the proposed composite.Among the three different stacking sequences of flexible composites considered,JRJRJ provides better ballistic performance compared to its counterparts. The damage study reveals that the main mechanism of failure involved in flexible composites is matrix tearing as opposed to matrix cracking in stiff composites indicating that the proposed flexible composites are free from catastrophic failure. Results obtained from experimental,FE and analytical approach pertaining to energy absorption and damage mechanism agree well with each other. The proposed flexible composites due to their exhibited energy absorption capabilities and damage mechanism are best suited as claddings for structural application subjected to impact with an aim of protecting the main structural component from being failed catastrophically. 展开更多
