Bioinspired Ultrasensitive Flexible Strain Sensors for Real‑Time Wireless Detection of Liquid Leakage

Liquid leakage of pipeline networks not only results in considerableresource wastage but also leads to environmental pollution and ecological imbalance.In response to this global issue, a bioinspired superhydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane/carbon nanotubes/graphene nanosheets flexible strain sensor (TCGS) hasbeen developed using a combination of micro-extrusion compression molding andsurface modification for real-time wireless detection of liquid leakage. The TCGSutilizes the synergistic effects of Archimedean spiral crack arrays and micropores,which are inspired by the remarkable sensory capabilities of scorpions. This designachieves a sensitivity of 218.13 at a strain of 2%, which is an increase of 4300%. Additionally, it demonstrates exceptional durability bywithstanding over 5000 usage cycles. The robust superhydrophobicity of the TCGS significantly enhances sensitivity and stability indetecting small-scale liquid leakage, enabling precise monitoring of liquid leakage across a wide range of sizes, velocities, and compositionswhile issuing prompt alerts. This provides critical early warnings for both industrial pipelines and potential liquid leakage scenariosin everyday life. The development and utilization of bioinspired ultrasensitive flexible strain sensors offer an innovative and effectivesolution for the early wireless detection of liquid leakage. 展开更多

In recent years,explosion shock wave has been considered as a signature injury of the current military conflicts.Although strong shock wave is lethal to the human body,weak shock wave can cause many more lasting consequences.To investigate the protection ability and characteristics of flexible materials and structures under weak shock wave loading,the blast wave produced by TNT explosive is loaded on the polyurethane foam with the density of 200.0 kg/m3(F-200)and 400.0 kg/m3(F-400),polyurea with the density of 1100.0 kg/m^(3)(P-1100)and structures composed of the two materials,which are intended for individual protection.Experimental results indicate that the shock wave is attenuated to weak pressure disturbance after interacting with the flexible materials which are not damaged.The shock wave protective capability of single-layer materials is dependent on their thickness,density and microscopic characteristics.The overpressure,maximum pressure rise rate and impulse of transmitted wave decrease exponentially with increase in sample thickness.For the same thickness,F-400 provides better protective capability than F-200 while P-1100 shows the best protective capability among the three materials.In this study,as the materials are not destroyed,F-200 with a thickness more than10.0 mm,F-400 with a thickness more than 4.0 mm,and P-1100 with a thickness more than 1.0 mm can attenuate the overpressure amplitude more than 90.0%.Further,multi-layer flexible composites are designed.Different layer layouts of designed structures and layer thickness of the single-layer materials can affect the protective performance.Within the research range,the structure in which polyurea is placed on the impact side shows the optimal shock wave protective performance,and the thicknesses of polyurea and polyurethane foam are 1.0 mm and 4.0 mm respectively.The overpressure attenuation rate reached maximum value of 93.3%and impulse attenuation capacity of this structure are better than those of single-layer polyurea and polyurethane foam with higher areal density. 展开更多

Porous materials are widely used in the field of protection because of their excellent energy absorption characteristics.In this work,a series of polyurethane microscopic models are established and the effect of porosity on the shock waves is studied with classical molecular dynamics simulations.Firstly,shock Hugoniot relations for different porosities are obtained,which compare well with the experimental data.The pores collapse and form local stress wave,which results in the complex multi-wave structure of the shock wave.The microstructure analysis shows that the local stress increases and the local velocity decreases gradually during the process of pore collapse to complete compaction.Finally,it leads to stress relaxation and velocity homogenization.The shock stress peaks can be fitted with two exponential functions,and the amplitude of attenuation coefficient decreases with the increase of density.Besides,the pore collapse under shock or non-shock are discussed by the entropy increase rate of the system.The energy is dissipated mainly through the multiple interactions of the waves under shock.The energy is dissipated mainly by the friction between atoms under non-shock. 展开更多

Rice husk powder was used as a carbon source in a high-temperature carbonization reaction for the production of rice husk ash(RHA).Under the catalysis of ferric nitrate,onion-like carbon(OLC)nanomaterial with a particle size of approximately 200 nm was successfully prepared and incorporated into waterborne polyurethane(WPU).The tribological properties of the coatings were determined using a controlled-atmosphere tribometer(WMT-2E)under dry-friction conditions.Following the friction test,the friction mechanism was investigated by characterizing the abrasive spot surfaces of the test samples using 3D laser microscopy and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometer.The final results demonstrated that the thermal stability of WPU composite coatings containing various concentrations of OLC nanoparticles was significantly enhanced,binding forces between coatings and steel sheets increased,and hardness improved compared to pure WPU coatings.Tribological tests revealed a notable enhancement in the anti-wear properties of WPU coatings due to the presence of OLC particles.Specifically,the wear rate of the 1.5%OLC/WPU coating was reduced by 45.3%.The coating’s anti-wear mechanism was attributed to the improvement in the mechanical properties of WPU due to OLC,as well as OLC’s participation in the formation of a transfer film under induced friction,which protected the matrix. 展开更多

The manufacturing technology, the equilibrium theory of matter and energy have been discussed and the PFPT is produced successfully at our laboratory. After investigating their properties, the effective factors to the behavior of the PFPT are studied. The microcosmic construction of the PFPT have been observed by sweep electron microscope(SEM) and the polishing mechanism studied. The paper presents the investigation of the effect of alkaline treatment of sodium hydroxide(NaOH) on physical and dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA) viscoelastic properties of kenaf fibre filled natural rubber(NR)/thermoplastic polyurethane(TPU) composites.The treated kenaf fiber,NR and TPU were weighed and proportioned according to the required compositions and were blended using hot mixed Brabender machine.The polymer composites were then fabricated using the hot press to form a sample board.The sample was cut and prepared and water absorption,density,thickness swelling and DMA tests were performed.As far as physical properties are concerned,composites with the highest NR amount of shows the best results,which indicates good fiber bonding adhesion.The polymer composites with the highest amount of TPU shows the highest damping properties at high temperature. 展开更多

We determined the effects of adhesive type and loose tenon dimensions (length and thickness) on bending strength of T-shaped mor- tise and loose-tenon joints. Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and two-component polyurethane (PU) adhesives were used to construct joint specimens. The bending moment capacity of joints increased significantly with increased length and thickness of the loose tenon. Bending moment capacity of joints constructed with PU adhesive was approximately 13% higher than for joints constructed with PVAc adhesive. We developed a predictive equation as a function of adhesive type and loose tenon dimensions to estimate the strength of the joints constructed of oriental beech (Fagus orientalis L.) under uniaxial bending load. 展开更多

Lightweight microcellular polyurethane(TPU)/carbon nanotubes(CNTs)/nickel-coated CNTs(Ni@CNTs)/polymerizable ionic liquid copolymer(PIL)composite foams are prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation(NIPS).CNTs and Ni@CNTs modified by PIL provide more heterogeneous nucleation sites and inhibit the aggregation and combination of microcellular structure.Compared with TPU/CNTs,the TPU/CNTs/PIL and TPU/CNTs/Ni@CNTs/PIL composite foams with smaller microcellular structures have a high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness(EMI SE).The evaporate time regulates the microcellular structure,improves the conductive network of composite foams and reduces the microcellular size,which strengthens the multiple reflections of electromagnetic wave.The TPU/10CNTs/10Ni@CNTs/PIL foam exhibits slightly higher SE values(69.9 dB)compared with TPU/20CNTs/PIL foam(53.3 dB).The highest specific EMI SE of TPU/20CNTs/PIL and TPU/10CNTs/10Ni@CNTs/PIL reaches up to 187.2 and 211.5 dB/(g cm^(−3)),respectively.The polarization losses caused by interfacial polarization between TPU substrates and conductive fillers,conduction loss caused by conductive network of fillers and magnetic loss caused by Ni@CNT synergistically attenuate the microwave energy. 展开更多

This investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using a two-component polyurethane (PUR) adhesive, with special waterproof properties, in constructing wooden structures. We designed and conducted tests to compare the shear strength and adhesion performance of PUR with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesive on block-shear specimens constructed of oriental beech (Fagus orientalis L.), fir (Abies alba Mill.), poplar (Populus deltoides Bartr.), white oak (Quercus alba L.), sycamore (Platanus orientalis L.) and white walnut (Juglans cinerea L.). The values of the percentage of wood failure were also determined in specimens constructed with each adhesive. The highest shear strength values of both adhesives were obtained in specimens constructed of beech, while the lowest shear strength values were obtained in fir and poplar specimens. Average shear strength of the PUR adhesive was 16.5% higher than that of the PVAc adhesive. Specimens constructed of fir, poplar and sycamore were characterised by the highest percentages of wood failure, whereas the lowest average percentages of wood failure were obtained in beech and oak specimens. With the exception of oak specimens, there was no statistically significant difference between percentage of wood failure among the PUR and PVAc adhesives. Generally, the PUR adhesive showed an acceptable adhesion performance on wood materials used in our study. 展开更多

A series of nano silica/silicone modified waterborne polyurethane(WPU) have been synthesized from polytetramethylene glycol and isophorone diisocyanate, dihydroxymethyl propionic acid and triethylamine, ethylenediamine, trimethylolpropane, nano-SiO2 and the silane coupling agent KH550. The effect of the dosage of nano-SiO2 on the WPU-Si membrane and the coated RDX(cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine) particles have been studied in terms of their surface properties, mechanical properties, and thermal stability. The results showed that with the increase of Si content, the stability of the emulsion reduced gradually. The material with more Si content displayed an increased thermodynamic stability, an increased high temperature resistance, an increased tensile strength and a decreased elongation at break. With the increase of Si content, the surface tension of the material decreased, the bibulous rate reduced, and the contact angle increased gradually, so that the surface tension of the polyurethane and RDX are close to each other which could improve the performance of coating. 展开更多

The effect of microwave treatment on the tensile properties of treated sugar palm fibre with 6% NaOH reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane composites was investigated. Firstly, the sugar palm fibres were treated by 6% alkali solution. Then, microwave treatment was used to treat the alkali treated sugar palm fibres. Three types of temperatures(i.e. 70, 80 and 90℃) were applied in microwave treatment. The extruder and hot press machines were used to mixing the sugar palm fibres and polyurethane resin, and fabricate the composites. Tensile properties(i.e. tensile strength, tensile modulus and elongation at break) were studied by following the ASTM D-638 standard. The highest tensile strength was recorded 18.42 MPa with microwave temperature at 70℃ and 6% alkali pre-treatment. Therefore, the temperature 70℃ of microwave treatment may consider the best degree cent grate. 展开更多

The increased demand of electronic devices promotes the development of advanced and more efficient energy storage devices, such as batteries. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the most studied battery systems due to their high performance. Among the different battery components, the separator allows the control of lithium ion diffusion between the electrodes. To overcome some drawbacks of liquid electrolytes, including safety and environmental issues, solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are being developed. In this work, a UV photocurable polyurethane acrylate (PUA) resin has been blended with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) up to 30 wt% LiTFSI content to reach a maximum ionic conductivity of 0.0032 mS/cm at room temperature and 0.09 mS/cm at 100 ℃. Those values allowed applying the developed materials as photocurable SPE in Swagelok type Li/C-LiFePO_(4) half-cells, reaching a battery discharge capacity value of 139 mAh.g^(−1) at C/30 rate. Those results, together with the theoretical studies of the discharge capacity at different C-rates and temperatures for batteries with LiTFSI/PUA SPE demonstrate the suitability of the developed photocurable SPE for LIB applications. 展开更多

The effect of a sandwiched cross-shaped metamaterial absorber(CMMA) on microwave absorption properties of the double-layered polyurethane foam absorber(PUFA) is investigated. Combining with the sandwiched CMMA, the bandwidth of -10-dB reflection loss for PUFA is broadened from 7.4 GHz to 9.1 GHz, which is attributed to the overlap of two absorption peaks originating from CMMA and PUFA, respectively. The values of the two absorption peaks located at 10.15 GHz and 14.7 GHz are -38.44 dB and -40.91 dB, respectively. Additionally, distribution of surface current,electromagnetic field and power loss density are introduced to investigate the absorption mechanism of the CMMA. The electromagnetic field distribution of the double-layered PUFA and the three-layered hybrid absorber are comparatively analyzed to ascertain the influence of CMMA. The results show that the proposed hybrid absorber can be applied to the anti-electromagnetic interference and stealth technology. 展开更多

Mud pumping induced by moving train loads on rainwater-intruded roadbed causes intensive track vibrations and threatens safety of high-speed trains.In this paper,a vehicle–track–subgrade finite element model was established to analyze the dynamic responses of a ballastless track,and results showed that the concrete base and roadbed were detached because of the whipping effect arising from the rainwater intrusion channel.An in-situ soil core test showed that the intruded rainwater accumulated in roadbed to form standing water and saturated the roadbed.The flapping action of the concrete base caused by the whipping effect led to mud formation mixed with fine particles and rainwater,which migrated upward under the pore-water pressure(PWP)gradient.Mud pumping resulted from continuous particle migration in the saturated roadbed under moving train loads:under normal roadbed condition,coarse and fine particles were uniformly distributed in the roadbed;in early period of mud pumping,fine particles migrated downward to bottom of the roadbed because of the rainwater infiltration flow;in middle stage of mud pumping,fine particles migrated upward and gathered at the roadbed surface under PWP gradient;in later period of mud pumping,fine particles were entrained and removed with the dissipation of excess PWP.Moreover,a full-scale physical model was established to reproduce mud pumping,and polyurethane injection remediation against mud pumping was validated on this physical model.The remediation method was applied to an in-situ mud pumping.The deviation of the vertical track profile reduced remarkably and remained at a low level within half a year,showing a good long-term service performance of the polyurethane remediated roadbed. 展开更多

Mud pumping in subgrade beds under ballastless tracks will deteriorate the dynamic performance of infrastructure under railway lines,reduce the smoothness of the railway lines,and seriously affect the comfort and safety of the trains.Due to their good mechanical properties,twocomponent polyurethane materials can be used for grouting to treat the fouling problems caused by ballastless track mud pumping.To develop a polyurethane formula suitable for the treatment of ballastless track mud pumping,we first performed indoor experiments to investigate the mechanical properties and gelation time of polyurethane elastomers synthesized with different raw material composition ratios,to determine an optimal composition ratio of the raw materials.Then,we conducted a dynamic field test to verify the remediation effect of the polyurethane material fabricated according to the design ratio.The results showed that polyurethane grouting material with the selected design ratios improved the contact characteristics between the surface layer of the subgrade bed and the base plate in the area,coordinating the dynamic response between the track structure and the subgrade bed.Thus,the obtained polyurethane grouting material could be used to renovate mud pumping areas of ballastless tracks with a good treatment effect. 展开更多

Broken and jointed ground is extremely hazardous and requires unique stabilization techniques to protect workers and critical entries.Bolting techniques,even the most advanced pre-load to create roof compression,can leave large gaps of unconfined and separated roof.This roof can also be susceptible to water inflows which only exacerbate the support problem.These types of conditions existed on long-term development main entry accessing several future longwall panels.The geotechnical assessment identified well defined jointing systems that also permitted water to flow between the roof separations,which"lubricated"the roof material and minimized any frictional advantages.Chemical injections of polyurethane materials,Minova Carbopur WS,was placed beyond the bolted horizon to move the water to the rib lines and reinforce the fractured and broken roof.The injection materials permitted the effective use of bolting patterns and helped ensure long-term stability of critical entries.The paper describes the evaluation techniques,design patterns,basis for chemical selection and application,and results and recommendations. 展开更多

In this study,orthogonal experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of expandable graphite(EG),dimethyl methylphosphonate(DMMP),triethanolamine(TEA),and isocyanate content on the compressive and bonding strengths,oxygen index,and fluidity of rigid polyurethane foam(RPUF).The results revealed that EG significantly increased the oxygen index of RPUF,enlarged the diameter of foam cells,and decreased the cell-closed content in foam;thus,leading to a pressure drop in RPUF.However,excessive EG was capable of reducing the fluidity of polyurethane slurry.TEA exhibited significant influence on the compressive strength of RPUF,which dropped initially,and then increased.DMMP had a remarkable effect on the flame retardant property and compressive strength of RPUF.Compressive strength of RPUF initially displayed an increase followed by a decrease with increasing dosage of DMMP,and achieved the maximum value at DMMP dosage of 4%.DMMP could effectively reduce the diameter of RPUF cells leading to an increase in the percentage of close area in foam.DMMP displayed the flame-retardation effects mainly in the gas phase leading to a significant enhancement in the oxygen index of RPUF.Moreover,the compressive strength and bonding strength of RPUF decrease significantly with the increase of isocyanate content due to the increased blowing efficiency by the CO_2.The oxygen index and flowing length of foam increased with the increase in isocyanate dosage. 展开更多

Two microcapsules with different paraffin phase changes were prepared using styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer and melamine resin as the capsule wall and paraffin(with a melting point of 50°C)as the capsule core.The microcapsules were directly added to the hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene(HTPB)-polyurethane elastomer system to fabricate the polyurethane elastomer composites.The thermodynamic stability and mechanical properties of the material were then studied.The results show that the thermal stability of the polyurethane elastomer does not decrease after adding paraffin phase change microcapsules,and the thermal stability of the polyurethane elastomer with melamine resin as the wall increases.Tensile strength increased from 367 kPa to 797 kPa,and compression strength increased from 245.9 N to 344.7 N.In addition,capsule walls comprised different monomers/paraffin microcapsules of the copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene.The optimal mechanical property was obtained at a monomer/paraffin ratio of 1:1.The compression strength increased and the tensile strength decreased.The tensile strength of the microcapsule with melamine resin capsule wall and the compression strength of the microcapsule with polystyrene capsule wall were considerably improved. 展开更多
