Physiological Analysis of Drought Resistance of Seven Cultivars Spring Wheat in Northern Regions of China

In order to determine the physiological mechanism of drought resistance of northern wheat in China,six drought resistant wheat and one sensitivity to drought wheat were planted in pots.They were subjected to drought treatment and normal water when the plants grew to the 3-leaf stage.Samples were collected at 10,20,30,and 40 days after the drought treatment,respectively.The electrical conductivity,photosynthetic parameters,chlorophyll fluorescence parameters,sugar content,proline content,protein content,and active oxygen scavenging enzyme activity of the plants were detected,and the agronomic traits of the wheat varieties were investigated at maturity.The results indicated that the phenotype and yield-related factors of Darkhan 144 changed little under the drought stress.The relative electrical conductivity of Kefeng 6 and Darkhan 166 was lower under the drought stress,and their cell membrane was less damaged.The Darkhan 144 and Darkhan 166 had higher drought resistance coefficients,and were the wheat varieties with stronger drought resistance.However,the physiological mechanisms of drought resistance of these three wheat were different:Darkhan 144 maintained a higher photosynthetic activity under the drought stress;Darkhan 166 maintained a higher protein content,photosynthetic activity and active oxygen scavenging enzyme activity.In addition,other drought-resistant varieties Kefeng 6,Kefeng 10 and Longmai 26 had a higher content of osmoregulatory substances under the drought stress. 展开更多

The rice Dongfu 159 was used for the potting experiment to simulate soil cadmium(Cd)stress,and four silicon preparations,Si-50-G and Si-60-G at a concentration of 0.20%and Si-T-G and Si-E-G at a concentration of 0.50%,were applied at the tillering stage and booting stage of rice,respectively.The cadmium content,root vitality,root malondialdehyde(MDA)content,and antioxidant enzyme activity of each part of rice plants were determined,in order to provide a theoretical reference for exploring the mechanism of silicon fertilizer on the mitigation of Cd-stressed plants.The results showed that under the condition of cadmium stress,silicon application could significantly increase the root vitality and antioxidant enzyme activity,reduce the content of MDA,and reduce the accumulation of cadmium in various parts of rice.The treatment of Si-T-G applied at the tillering stage was the most effective in increasing the root vitality of rice,which was significantly increased by 63.00%compared with the CK.The treatment of Si-50-G applied at the stage of booting was the most effective in reducing MDA content of rice roots,which was significantly reduced by 30.16%compared with the CK.The treatment of Si-60-G applied at the stage of booting was the most effective in increasing the root superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity,which was significantly increased by 39.36%compared with the CK.The treatment of Si-60-G applied at the tillering stage was the most effective in increasing the root peroxidase(POD)and catalase(CAT)activities,which were significantly increased by 64.66%and 51.52%,respectively,compared with the CK.The treatment of Si-T-G applied at the tillering stage was the most effective in reducing Cd content of rice roots,stems and grains,which were significantly reduced by 39.53%,61.19%and 43.41%,respectively,compared with the CK,and the treatment of Si-60-G was the most effective in reducing Cd content of leaves,which was significantly reduced by 53.40%compared with the CK. 展开更多

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the physiological and the biochemical characteristics of waxy wheat seeds under accelerated aging conditions. Five waxy wheat lines, which were Waxy 1, Waxy 4, Waxy 8, Waxy 9, and Waxy 15; and five non-waxy wheat lines: S-39, 04J89, Jan-81, III42-4, and II110 were studied. The seeds were subjected to accelerated aging at 40℃, 45℃, 50℃, 55℃, and 60℃, and 90% relative humidity for 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 days, respectively. The results showed a gradual increase in conductivity and decrease in germination rate during accelerated aging. SOD, POD and CAT activities increased at lowgrade treatment, but decreased at severe treatment. On the other hand, the soluble protein content decreased at 45 ℃, but successively increased, then decreased 50℃. From the above study, it showed that 90% RH at 55℃ was the best accelerated aging condition for optimum efficiency in a shorter period. 展开更多

The study was designated to explore the physiological mechanism of cold tolerance enhanced by phosphate in rice. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of phosphate fertilizer on cold tolerance and its related physiological parameters in rice seedings (chilling-sensitive cv. Changbai 9 and chilling-tolerant cv. Jijing 81) under low temperature stress. At the same time, the identification of cold tolerance was conducted. Compared with the normal temperature treatment, the relative chlorophyll content, photosynthesis rate, Fv/Fm and qP decreased and index of unsaturated fatty acid increased in rice under low temperature stress. The effect of chilling-sensitive cultivars was more than that of chilling-tolerant cultivars, more phosphorus fertilizer properly improved seedling quality of rice, slowed relative chlorophyll content dropping degree of rice seeding, increased photosynthesis rate, Fv/Fm, qP and index of unsaturated fatty acids, and enhanced the ability to chilling-tolerant cultivars under low temperature. The effect on chilling-tolerant cultivars was significantly higher than that on chilling sensitive cultivars by applying more phosphorus fertilizer. Phosphate regulated photosynthetic physiology and membrane fluidity to reduce injury by low temperature, and increasd the cold tolerance capacity of rice. 展开更多

With the living standards gradually improved,the buildings with safe,comfortable,healthy indoor thermal environment would be the ideal pursuit. But to create the preferable indoor thermal environment,it is necessary to research physiological influence of indoor thermal environment on human body. So a typical region of hot-humid climate in Chongqing,China,was considered as the object to study physiological indexes of human body. And the indoor thermal environment parameters and physiological indexes of human body were the main measurements. 20 volunteer students were organized to take part in the experiments in the laboratory during this summer. And two methods,physical measuring and questionnaire investigation,were used in the experiments. The results show that the increase in indoor air temperature reduces the uncomfortable feeling of air draft. Indoor air temperature has visible effects on MCS (motor nerve conduction speed),SCS (sensory nerve conduction speed),HR (heart rate),the ECG (electrocardiogram)-QT segment and SSEP (short somatosensory evoked potential)-latent period of N9. Therefore,a safe,comfortable and healthful indoor environment can be created by considering these factors. 展开更多

A totatl of 116 isolates of rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae, were collected from 45 samples in different counties of Heilongjiang Province, and 20 Chinese physiological races belonging to seven groups were identified by using seven standard Chinese rice blast identifying varieties. Results showed that the dominant groups could be ranked as ZA, ZD, and ZB, with the occurrence frequencies of 47.41%, 22.41% and 15.52%, respectively. The race ZA49 was the dominant race with the occurrence frequency of 26.72%. The occurrence frequencies of the races ZD5 and ZD1 were 10.34% and 8.62%, respectively. The rising occurrence frequencies of these three dominant species were the most important reasons that causing Kongyu-131 more sensitive to rice blast. The results of virulence frequency indicated that the race harboring Pi-k, Pi-i, Pi-a gene were more susceptible to rice blast in Heilongjiang Province, and they should not be large-scale cultivated. 展开更多

In order to explore the effects of low temperature on the two different genotypes of white clover, electrical conductivity (EC), soluble sugar, malondialdehyde (MDA) and some other physiological indexes of plants were compared under laboratory conditions. Seedlings of Longping No.1 and Koala were undergone a series of degrading temperatures set in turn 25℃, 10℃, 5℃, 0℃, –5℃ and –10℃. The results showed that the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), electrical conductivity, soluble sugar, free proline and MDA increased obviously with the decrease of stress temperature, while the content of starch decreased, and the content of soluble protein increased first and then decreased during the process. Comprehensive assessments on physiological responses to low temperature stress indicated that the cultivar Longping No.1 had stronger cold resistance than that of cultivar Koala. 展开更多

Effect of 6-BA on Physiological Changes in Two Palm Seedlings Under Varied Temperaures

The effects of 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA) on several physiological indexes of Caryota mitis and C. obtusa seedlings treated at varied temperatures were conducted, the leaves of the two palm species were sprayed with 0, 25, 50 and 100 mg · L1 6-BA solutions, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), proline, soluble protein, chlorophyll and chlorophyll a/b were determined under 25 ℃, 5 ℃ and 25 ℃ for 24 h, respectively. The dynamics of a series of important physiological components derived from the leaves were studied. It was indicated that all the above mentioned physiological indexes varied with different concentrations of 6-BA and temperature. The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation values for different concentrations of 6-BA at the recovery temperature 25℃ were 0.33, 0.28, 0.92 and 0.33, respectively for C. mitis, and 0.20, 0.49, 0.56 and 0.63, respectively for C. obtusa. It was concluded that leaves sprayed with different concentrations of 6-BA could affect the cold tolerance of palm seedlings. The optimal concentration of 6-BA was different for different palm species. 展开更多

In order to study the alkali resistivity of VHA-c in Iris lacteal. (IrlVHA-c), the transgenic tobacco seedlings harboring lrlVHA-c gene from Iris lactea (To), the self-crossed progeny (T1), and the non-transgenic lines of tobacco seedlings were grown in Hoagland nutrient solutions supplemented with 0, 100, 200, 300, 400 mmol.L^-1 NaHCO3. The MDA content, CAT, POD and SOD activity, electrical conductivity, chlorophyll content, soluble sugar content, proline content and polyphenol oxidase activity of the seedlings were determined. The results showed that the transgenic lines of tobacco maintained a high activity up to 200 mmol.L^-1 NaHCO3, and activity was slightly lower at 300 mmol.L^-1 NaHCOa. When the concentration of NaHCO3 was as high as 400 mmol.L^-1 the seedlings were badly hurt. In addition, the activity of To and T1 transgentic tobacoo was maintained more or less. While the non- transgenic lines of tobacco could maintain viably up to 100 mmol. L^-1 NaHCO3, and they could not survive at 400 mmol. L^-1 NaHCO3. The conclusion was drawn that the alkali resistance of the tobacoo transformed IrlVHA-c was noticeably improved. 展开更多

Physiological mechanisms involved in resistance to cotton verticillium wilt induced by AM fungi 被引量:4

It was proved that arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi played an important role in increasing plant resistance to soilborne pathogens, especially when plants were pre-inoculated with AM fungi. Mechanisms involved in this phenomenon are not yet well understood. On the basis of the former experiment results in our lab, effects of AM fungi on cotton Verticillium wilt and the mechanisms of increasing disease resisitance by the tested fungi were studied in pot culture under greenhouse conditions. Two cotton cutivars Litai 8 and 86-1 which are susceptible to Verticillium dahliae were pre-inoculated with Glomus fasiculatum, and Gigaspora margarita, then inoculated with the strain of Verticillium dahliae, namely “An-Yang” (belong to intermediate virulent type) 30 days after the former inoculation. Results showed that AM fungi could improve the growth and development of cotton plants, increase plants dry mass, decrease incidence and disease index of Verticillium wilt of cotton plants, inhibit the infection and development of V. dahliae to different extent in the rhizosphere of cotton pre-inoculated with AM fungi, while the colonization and spore numbers of AM fungi were not reduced significantly by this pathogen. The defence enzymes, such as phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), chitinase, β-1,3-glucanase, peroxidase, polyphenoloxidase (PPO) were induced, and their activities and peak increased by AM fungi in roots and leaves, and the increasing speed and peak of the enzyme activity were higher in treatment with AM fungus preinoculation than the inoculation with only V. dahliae, which suggested that defense response was activated by AM fungi, and then made the cotton to react strongly and rapidly to the infection of V. dahliae. In addition, AM fungi decreased the content of malondiadehyde (MDA) in cotton roots and leaves, protected membrane system and alleviated the damage caused by the pathogen. The AM fungus, Glomus fasiculatum showed the superior effects of biological control. It was concluded that AM fungi could provide the biological control to cotton diseases and there were application prospects of this biological agents. 展开更多

Different neural circuits between physiological and psychological stress-induced PTSD like "nightmare" in rats: Insights from c-Fos mapping

Methods We utilized a communication box to establish an animal model of physiological stress (foot-shock I FSI) and psychological stress (PS) to mimic the direct suffering and witnessing of traumatic events. Results Twenty-one days after traumatic stress, some of the experimental animals presented startled awakening ( i. e. , were startled awake by a supposed "nightmare") with different electroencephalographic spectra features. Our neuroan- atomical results showed that the secondary somatosensory cortex and primary auditory cortex may play an important role in remote traumatic memory retrieval in FS "nightmare" (FSN) rats, whereas the temporal association cortex may play an important role in PS "nightmare" (PSN) rats. The FSN and PSN groups possessed common emotion evocation circuits, including activation of the amygdala and inactivation of the infralimbic prefrontal cortex and ven- tral anterior cingulate cortex. The decreased activity of the granular and dysgranular insular cortex was only oh-served in PSN rats. Conclusion The present results imply that different types of stress may cause PTSD-like "nightmares" in rodents and identified the possible neurocircuitry of memory retrieval and emotion evocation. 展开更多

Hypoxia tolerance studies for yield,fiber and physiological traits in cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Background: Hypoxia tolerance studies in cotton are very rare in Pakistan. Unpredicted and excessive rainfalls result in severe losses to cotton crop in many regions of the country due to lack of hypoxia tolerance in current cotton varieties. The genotypes that can tolerate flooding are not reported earlier. The studies were conducted to explore hypoxia tolerance in local germplasm which will help to develop hypoxia tolerant cotton varieties. Method: An experiment with randomized complete different cotton varieties. The genotypes were given conditions. blocks was designed to study the hypoxia tolerance in two treatments i.e., water logged and non-water logged Results: The genotypes showed significant variability for yield, fiber and physiological traits. The hypoxia studies revealed that there is significant reduction for plant height in water sensitive genotype LRA-5166. The genotype MNH-786 showed better yield and MNH-556 showed superior ginning outturn percentage under water logged conditions. Staple length, strength and micronaire values also decreased under hypoxia. Similar pattern of negative effects were observed for Chlorophyll a, b contents and chl a/b ratio. Two hypoxia tolerant cultivars CIM-573 and MNH-564 had significantly higher chlorophyll a (1.664, 1.551) than other cultivars under both normal and waterlogged conditions. There was a significant decrease in total free amino acids in all genotypes/cultivars due to waterlogging. Free amino acid contents were significantly higher in two waterlogging sensitive cultivars, CEDIX and N-KRISHMA, than other cultivars under both non-waterlogged and waterlogged conditions. Waterlogging caused a significant reduction in shoot soluble proteins and increase in shoot proline. The genotype LRA-5166 was the highest in shoot soluble proteins content and showed significant decrease in shoot proline. Conclusions: With respect to yield MNH-786 showed better results and regarding ginning outturn percentage MNH-556 exhibited superior performance. The genotypes CIM-573 and MNH-564 showed higher chlorophyll a values. The above said genotypes may be exploited for further studies related to hypoxia tolerance. 展开更多

Green foxtail(Setaria viridis)is a notorious weed in corn fields in Heilongjiang Province.To investigate the best method to break the seed dormancy of green foxtail and its physiological response to topramezone,this study selected newly harvested and one-year stored green foxtail seeds as research subjects.The seeds were treated with HCl,Na OH,gibberellic acid(GA),different water temperatures and polyethylene glycol(PEG)to study the seed dormancy and drought resistance of green foxtail.The results showed that newly harvested seeds exhibited dormancy,and treatments with HCl,NaOH and different water temperatures were unable to break the dormancy.Soaking the seeds in GA could overcome dormancy,but the seeds failed to germinate when exposed to 25%PEG concentration.When topramezone was applied at rates of 22.5 and 45.0 g a.i.·hm^(-2)at the 3-leaf and 5-leaf stages,respectively,the chlorophyll content reached the lowest value at 28 days after treatment(DAT).At the 7-leaf stage,the chlorophyll content reached the lowest value at 7 DAT.The activity of 4-hydroxyphenylpy-ruvate dioxygenase(HPPD)enzyme after topramezone application reached the maximum value at 7 DAT for different leaf ages,and the higher the leaf age,the higher the HPPD activity,which was an important factor contributing to the resistance of green foxtail to topramezone. 展开更多

The red blood cell amount(RBC)and packed cell volume (PCV)of the wild yak and Datong yak were similar but differed largely from that of the Tianzhu Black yak. RBC of the wild yak and Datong yak were larger than that of the Tianzhu Black yak and their RBC varied seasonally.The results indicated that wild yak and Datong yak could effectively adapt to changes in environment by adjusting their physiological indices. 展开更多

In order to reveal the cold resistant mechanism of tea plant,two varieties with different cold resistances were studied.The activities of catalase(CAT),peroxidase(POD),superoxide dismutase(SOD) and polyphenol oxidase(PPO) were investigated,and the contents of soluble protein,sugar and malondialdehyde(MDA) were determined in fresh tea leaves in the autumn.The results showed that the activities of POD and the content of soluble sugar were both much higher in the variety with strong cold resistance,and the content of soluble protein was associated with the cold resistance,while the cold resistance of the plant was not related with the activities of the CAT,SOD and PPO,and the content of MDA.It is considered that the activity of POD and contents of soluble sugar could be used as indicators to identify the cold resistance of tea varieties. 展开更多

【目的】了解‘豫济’山桐子苗期的抗旱能力,为其推广种植提供理论参考。【方法】以2年生‘豫济’山桐子为试验材料,设置CK、轻度干旱(D1)、中度干旱(D2)、重度干旱(D3)、持续干旱(D4)共5个处理,CK、D1、D2、D3处理的土壤相对含水量分别... 【目的】了解‘豫济’山桐子苗期的抗旱能力,为其推广种植提供理论参考。【方法】以2年生‘豫济’山桐子为试验材料,设置CK、轻度干旱(D1)、中度干旱(D2)、重度干旱(D3)、持续干旱(D4)共5个处理,CK、D1、D2、D3处理的土壤相对含水量分别为75%、30%、20%、10%,D4处理为一次性浇透后不再浇水。每10 d测定1次株高、地径和叶片形态;分别在干旱胁迫前期(试验第0天)、干旱胁迫中期(各胁迫处理苗木存活时间的1/2)、干旱胁迫末期(苗木整株枯死,试验结束)时,对各处理苗木的根系形态特征和生物量进行测定。探究干旱胁迫下苗木在形态结构、细胞膜系统、渗透调节物质和内源激素等方面的变化。【结果】D1、D2处理苗木全部存活,D3、D4处理苗木分别存活30、60 d。短时间的轻度干旱胁迫能够促进苗木根系生长。胁迫末期,随着胁迫程度的加强,叶长、叶宽、着叶数量、株高增量、地径增量、根体积、根表面积、根长、根系密度逐渐降低。可溶性蛋白含量逐渐降低,MDA含量和相对电导率逐渐升高,IAA、GA_(3)和ZR含量表现为轻、中度干旱胁迫下逐渐升高,重度和持续干旱胁迫下降低。D3处理后期可溶性糖含量、脯氨酸含量迅速升高;D4处理后期可溶性糖含量迅速升高、脯氨酸含量先升高后降低。【结论】‘豫济’山桐子对干旱较为敏感,能够通过延缓生长、损失部分生物量、提高渗透调节物含量、增加激素水平来适应不同程度的干旱,适度的干旱可以促进苗木的生长发育,可以将土壤相对含水量20%作为临界点。 展开更多
